story retelling

Ok I’m gonna retell the story of meeting the boys bc I still cannot believe

So they cut the line before me but they came down just to say quick his to everyone. Geoff came first and I literally froze and I just hugged him and the first words to come out of my mouth were “hi I’m so sorry I’m soggy” and he just said “no no you’re fine! I’m just as soggy so” and then we just stood there laughing and he hugged my friend who was taking pictures and honestly I don’t remember what happened after that it was just a blur

Awsten came next and I hugged him and I was like “you guys did so good today it was amazing” and he was like “oh thank you I had so much fun”

I hugged Otto and told him the same thing I told awsten and then I told him how that was my first time seeing them and they’re my favorite band “like right up there with my chem” and his jaw dropped and he was like “WOW oh my god thank you that means so much” and I told him that I would let him finish with the rest of the line and he was just like “well thank you have a good night!” And I said you too and I still can’t believe any of it happened

here’s the thing about manipulative people: they will continue to manipulate you long after you’ve cut them from your life.

they’ll manipulate your words, your actions, your personality when they retell the story to themselves, to mutual friends, to people you don’t even know. and they will retell it, because in the retelling, they get to be the victim, and they can use it to manipulate even more people into feeding the need for attention and sympathy that rules their lives.

it can be maddening after the fact, to think about the control they still hold over the narrative, but you have to remember that you are not that narrative. they manipulate what you left in your wake because they no longer have you to manipulate. and you’ve come out the winner either way, because all they have to cling to is that narrative and its details, but you? you’re free of them for good and you are so much better for it.

Let’s talk about an Ariel who walks away—limping, mouthing inaudible sailors’ curses, a sea-brine knife in her belt.

Ariel traded her voice for a chance to walk on land. That was the deal: every time she steps, it will feel like being stabbed by knives. She must win the hand of her one true love, or she will die at his wedding day, turn to sea foam, forgotten. The helpful steward tells her to dance for the prince, even though her feet scream each time she steps. Love is pain, the sea witch promised. Devotion calls for blood.

But how about this? When the prince marries another, nothing happens. When Ariel stands over the prince and his fiance the night before their wedding, her sisters’ hard-won knife in hand, she doesn’t decide his happiness is more important than her life. She decides that his happiness is irrelevant. Her curse does not turn on the whims of this boy’s heart.

She does not throw away the knife and throw herself into the sea. She does not bury it in the prince and break her curse—it would not have broken. She leaves them sleeping in what will be their marriage bed and limps into a quiet night, her knife clean in her belt, her heart caught in her throat. Her feet scream, but they ache, too, for the places she has yet to see.

Ariel will not be sea foam or a queen. There is life beyond love. There is love in just living. Her true love will not be married on the morn—the prince will be married then, in glorious splendor, but he had never been why she was here.

Ariel traded her voice for legs to stand on, a chance at another life. When she poked her head above the waves, it wasn’t the handsome biped that she fell for. It was the way the hills rolled, golden in the sun. It was the clouds chasing each other across blue sky, like sea foam you could never reach.

(She does reach it, one day, bouncing around in the back of a blacksmith’s cart, signing jokes to him in between helping to tune his guitar. They crest up a high mountain pass and into the belly of a cloud. Her breath whistles out, swirls water droplets, and she reaches out a hand to touch the sky. Her feet will scream all her life, but after that morning they ache just a little bit less).

I want an Ariel who is in love with a world, not a prince. I don’t want her to be a moral for little girls about what love is supposed to hurt like, about how it is supposed to kill you. Ariel will be one more wandering soul, forgotten. Her voice will live in everything she does. She uses her sisters’ knife to turn a reed into a pipe. She cannot speak, but she still has lungs.

Love is pain, says the old man, when Ariel smiles too wide at sunrises. It’s pain, says the innkeeper, with pity, as Ariel hobbles to a seat, pipe in hand. At least you are beautiful, soothes the country healer who looks over her undamaged feet. The helpful steward had thought she was shy. Dance for the prince even though your feet feel stuck with a hundred knives.

Her feet feel like knives but she goes out dancing in the grass at midnight anyway. She’s never seen stars before. Moonlight reaches down through the depths, but starlight fractures on the surface. Ariel dances for herself.

She goes down to caves and rocky shores. Sometimes she meets with her sisters there. Mouths filled with water cannot speak above the sea, so she drops into the waves and they sing to her, old songs, and she steals breaths of air between the stanzas. She can drown now. She holds her breath. She opens her eyes to the salt and brine.

Ariel uses canes and takes rides on wagons filled with hay, chickens, tomatoes—never fish. She earns coins and paper scraps of money with a conch shell her youngest sister swam up from the depths for her, with her reed pipe, with a lyre from her eldest sister which sounds eerie and high out of the water. The shadow plays she makes on the walls of taverns waver and wriggle like on the sea caves of her childhood, but not because of water’s lap and current. It is the firelight that flickers over her hands.

When she has limped and hitched rides so far that no one knows the name of her prince’s kingdom, she meets a travelling blacksmith on the road with an extra seat in his cart and an ear for music. He never asks her to dance for him and she never does. She drops messages in bottles to her sisters, at every river and coastline they come to, and sometimes she finds bottles washed up the shore just for her.

They travel on. When she breathes, these days, her lungs fill with air.

Some nights she wakes, gasping, coughing up black water that never comes. There is something lying heavy on her chest and there always will be.

Somewhere in the ocean, a sea witch thinks she has won. When Ariel walks, she hobbles. Her voice was the sunken treasure of the king’s loveliest daughter, and so when they tell Ariel’s story they say she has been robbed. They say she has been stolen.

She has many instruments because she has many voices—all of them, hers; made by her hands, or gifted from her sisters’ dripping ones. Ariel will sing until the day she dies with every instrument but her vocal cords.

She cannot win it back, the high sweet voice of a merchild who had never blistered her shoulders red with sun, who had never made a barroom rise to its feet to sing along to her strumming fingers. She cannot ever again sing like a girl who has not held a dagger over two sleeping lovers and then decided to spare them. She decided not to wither. She decided to walk on knives for the rest of her life. She cannot win it back, but even if she could, she knows she would not sound the same.

They call her story a tragedy and she rests her aching feet beside the warming hearth. With every new ridge climbed, new river forded, new night sky met, her feet ache a little less. They call her a tragedy, but the blacksmith’s donkey is warm and contrary on cold mornings. The blacksmith’s shoulder is warm under her cheek.

Her feet will always hurt. She has cut out so many parts of her self, traded them up, won twisted promises back and then twisted them herself. She lives with so many curses under her skin, but she lives. They call her story a moral, and maybe it is.

When she breathes, her lungs fill. When she walks, the earth holds her up. There is sun and there is light and she can catch it in her hands. This is love.

Fanfic Writers

I don’t understand why people think fanfiction writers aren’t real writers.

I mean, have you ever read a fanfiction? Have you read how wonderfully their descriptions are? How well they know the characters?

I am a full-time writer and I write my own stories but I’m far below the average Fanfic writers when it comes to writing scenes and describing emotions.

If a writer writes a retelling of old work/fairy tale, they’re applauded and praised but that’s what Fanfic writers are doing. Retelling a story in a completely unique way with old set of characters.

It just annoys me. But shout out to all the fabulous Fanfic writers out there (yes, even though you write fanfics about my anti-ships). Thank you for your selfless contribution to our fandoms (and fantasies which we know won’t ever happen).

Fandoms and the world of storytelling are incomplete without you all.

I have nothing but utmost respect and love for you. 💗

Okay so like NO one has heard of this musical before but like...

JASPER IN DEADLAND IS SO GOOD.

Okay summary time: It’s basically about this kid named Jasper [Who really likes diving and wears a kickass red sweater) has this best friend named, Agnes. They love each other, but Jasper thinks she deserves better. She confesses and Jasper unable to reincorporate for the reason mentioned above and doesn’t give her an answer. SO trying to get an answer, they say they’re gonna meet at this cliff (They’re hang out <3) but Jasper gets there a little late and Agnes tries diving off the cliff and fails….and also drowns. Oh no she’s dead. But Jasper, being the lovesick and selfless boy he is jumps into save her. Saying that he’d give his soul up too save her. And might also being dying too. And then BOOM we meet the ‘villain’ Mr. Lethe (Yes like that river in the Greek Mythos) whose basically argues with his boss (Psst it’s pluto/hades) about if this soul should be let in. He loses and let’s Jasper’s soul into ‘deadland’. Thus the title, after a dramatic opening sequence he makes it his mission to save Anges from the underworld and bring her back to life.

Long story short: It’s a modern day Orpheus and Eurydice retelling (Kind of) as well as a crossover fanfic (musical) with various underwold myths. Some examples:

  • Lethe is a River in the Greco-Roman Mythos (as mentioned above). It makes you forget things.
  • Cerberus guards the front gate into deadland
  • OH Deadland is split up into ‘circles’ like how Dante’s inferno.
  • The Chiron shows up too, the greek ferry man
  • Osiris shows up (though it’s brief) as a singer in a club in ‘city circle’
  • Said club is named Helheim (From Norse mythology)
  • Speaking of Norse Myth! Loki and Hel show up as well for a quickie cameo as Lackies.
  • The second gate is protected by Ammit, a demon from the edyptain mythos that eat hearts (She even has her own song) Sadly Anubis doesn’t get s shout out :(
  • When he get too the most ‘hellish’ part of deadland it’s ruled over by a guy named ‘Little Lu’. A fallen angle aka Lucifer.
  • Sisyphus gets a named drop as he is in the ‘hell’ part of deadland
  • A little more less known Greek myth as well, the daughters of Danus are there too. As well as Brutus, that guy who stabbed Caesar a bunch of times.
  • Remember how I said this story was a retelling or Orpheus and Eurydice? The show knows this because Eurydice basically plays the part of a Obi-wan Kenobi in this and helps Jasper on his journey. IT’S  ALMOST LIKE SHE WANTS THEM TO HAVE A HAPPY ENDING BC SHE DIDN’T GET ONE :((((((((
  • Elysium is one of the last circles.
  • Pluto or better known as Hades is the big boss of Dealand with his wifey Persephone. They’re lethe’s boss.

BUT THOSE ARE JUST SOME REFERENCES THAT MAKE MY MYTH LOVING HEART SWELL!!! I’m sure they’re are more (Since I sadly never made it to a stage production). But the real meat is the songs, I’ll give some of my favorites.

  • Jasper Goodbye  (The opening song)
  • What is Life (Cerberus’s ‘solo’)
  • The Killing (Japser’s Answer to Cerberus’s question)
  • The Forgetting (Sometimes your just start speaking in Portuguese when a magical river washes away your memories)
  • Living Dead (A bunch of Dead people love being dead: The song)
  • Hungry for Your Heart (Remember when I said Ammit got a solo. This is that solo.)
  • Stroke by Stroke (Uplifting water metaphor: The song)
  • Beat and Broken Spirits (The most fun song about internal damnation sung by Satan)
  • Awful People (Undead man/Physical embodiment sings about how awful the world is, obviously.)
  • Elysium (Everything sucks back home, maybe we should stay dead?: The song)
  • Lifesong (Eurydice’s solo! Basically Uplifting life metaphor: The song)
  • The Trade / The Swim (HAPPY ENDINGS ALL AROUND! Hello Jasper Hello)

REALLY I JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT JASPER IN DEADLAND AND I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD CHECK IT OUT. The whole album is on youtube and itunes. And you can find a lot of the workshops on there as well.

Some just cool things:

Really look up this musical. It’s worth listening too.

as much as i love elena, penelope, and lydia, I would love to see some alex alvarez appreciation. For starters, he:

  • was immediately accepting when Elena came out to him
  • is basically a baseball fanboy
  • loves hamilton
  • puts a blanket over his head when his mom tries to give him the Talk
  • helped organize Elena’s quinces
  • is not good at shaving on the first try but learned with his mom
  • is a shoe nerd
  • learned a whole dance for Elena’s quinces
  • has shitty friends but doesn’t act shitty himself
  • is a great filmmaker
  • doesn’t force his abuelita to retell her story
  • has a great relationship with his family, and Schneider
  • Is a talented cellist
  • Is the first person after Penelope to hug and dance with Elena at her quinces

there are so many more and i love alex alvarez

Humans are weird

Ok, getting on the humans are weird bandwagon….

It surprises me that we haven’t talked about the most obvious thing: humans imagine things. Humans outright make shit up. (Like these posts?) Human stories often aren’t retellings of things that actually happened. Art often isn’t a depiction of true events. Humans - for want of a better word - humans sublimate. They transform their experiences into outlandish non-reality for each others’ amusement.

It takes forever for first contact to start because the aliens planning it keep getting confused by first radio, then television. Some of these depictions can’t be possible - but which ones? The first time War of the Worlds reaches the Kuiper belt, someone panics and has to double check that a more aggressive group hasn’t actually invaded.

After humans are finally integrated into galactic culture, some issues crop up.

“Did you clean the waste facility?” the Janitorial Supervisor asks.

“Well, I would have,” the human starts, then proceeds to tell an outrageous story about a cleaning bot with a knife strapped to its back which has the entire crew searching the ship for hours. The entire crew except for the humans.

The Captain finds the humans “searching” the self-poisoning cabinet in one of the crew quarters.

“Oh my god,” the First Officer says, on seeing the Captain’s dust-speckled upper ears. “Oh my god, I can’t believe you really fell for that. Stabby is a cryptid, Harold!”

The Captain’s name is not Harold, but that is another, even longer story.

The Captain exhales. “What is a cryptid?”

The assistant medical officer sits up straighter, his drink sloshing dangerously. The Captain has learned what “a gleam in his eye” means and how to detect it. They sit, resigned. There’s no escaping now.

An hour later, the Captain explains the concept of cryptids in considerably less detail to the embarrassed and confused Supervisor. Along with the concept of lying.

“But how do you know the difference?” the Supervisor asks, wringing their tentacles in mixed embarrassment and worry.

“Find another human,” the Captain advises. “Check for signs of mirth.”

This turns out to be prescient, because on their next planetary stop, two of the human field officers come running back into the base camp, out of breath and without the rest of their scouting team.

“Nasty buggers with teeth!” one gasps. Though the other officers appear skeptical, the Captain glances at the First Officer, who is already setting down her meal and grabbing her favorite flamethrower. The assistant medical officer yanks his kit straps over his shoulders, face grim.

“Arm yourselves,” the Captain tells the rest.

It takes about four hours, but they get everyone back more or less intact. The humans change the sign in the rec room on the ship to read: “Us: 6, Them: 0″. There is a ritual raising of liquor-filled glasses, even by the injured who are forbidden self-poisoning. The Captain begins temporary hibernation very relieved that humans are so willing to count other species as “us”.

When they ask the First Officer about it two cycles later, the First Officer looks confused, then knowing.

“My great grandmother remembers when you first showed up. They picked your people for first contact for a reason, didn’t they?”

“We look the most like you.”

“Yeah, well, that was a bad call. Gran says humans debated for months whether or not you were just other humans with good prosthetic makeup.”

The Captain blinks at this. “Most peoples are shocked and upset to learn the rest of the sentient universe does not share their appearance. Wait.” They pause. “Is that why we had so many applicants for the Janitorial position?”

The First Officer ignores that, as she usually does when the Captain doesn’t really want to know the answer.

“Do you know why cryptids exist? Why horror and violence and monsters exist in our stories?” she asks instead.

The Captain twitches both sets of ears ‘no’. “It seems unnecessary to frighten yourselves over things that don’t exist.”

“But nasty buggers with teeth do exist, even if we haven’t met them yet,” she says grimly. “And we were ready, weren’t we?”

It’s true. The humans on board have been terrifyingly adaptable, even in their violence.

The Captain feels their way carefully. “You think about things that don’t exist… sometimes even things that distress and terrify you… so that you can be ready when you face real things that distress and terrify you?”

“See, this is why you’re the Captain, Harold.” The First Officer slaps their shoulder hump cheerfully, careful to avoid the spines. “And better yet, we share the things we imagine with each other. It’s like a mental vaccine.”

“And it works?”

“Eh, sometimes. It’s not perfect. Sometimes we don’t mark our vaccines properly, or don’t realize we’re adding things we didn’t mean to. Some of them have a bad effect on some people, for various reasons. But we joined the galactic community in less than a generation. Has any other species ever done that?”

“You imagined us before you met us.”

“Now you’re getting it.”

otabek altin is endlessly fond

in honor of the new artwork we were blessed with and the fact that otabek’s love will not LET US REST, i give to you more ways in which otabek is super soft for yuri:

  • yuri does this thing right before he genuinely laughs where his eyebrows twitch just a little and he huffs out a small breath. every time it happens, otabek’s heart stops just a little bit.
  • whenever yuri talks about something he loves, his smile widens, his eyes soften, and he curls his fingers just so. otabek watched him do it once at a group dinner when he was retelling a story about something the two of them did together and he had to leave the table to collect himself.
  • once they got really comfortable with each other, they would often mention how much they love and appreciate having the other as a friend and a confidante. the first time otabek made yuri laugh and turn to him saying, “i love you so much,” in person, he felt so blessed that this person who was his inspiration for so long was suddenly his friend and found inspiration in him too.
  • when they get the chance to spend time together in the summer, they still train. yuri does this thing before he starts running where he bounces up and down on his toes a little bit to get himself in the zone. after a few visits together, otabek finds himself adopting the habit and doing the same thing whether they’re together or not.
  • we’ve already seen that yuri is a really tactile person. otabek is definitely not used to it at first, but over time he learns to really appreciate it. whenever they’re out doing something and he feels a little tug at his sleeve, he automatically smiles and turns around without saying anything, prepared to see whatever it is yuri wants to show him.
  • otabek’s favorite time to watch yuri is when he’s super absorbed in something and not paying attention to his surroundings. he gets really focused and his mouth opens up just a little bit, and when he comes across something he finds really interesting, his eyebrows shoot up before he looks around for otabek so he can share it. it always makes otabek’s heart melt that he’s the first person yuri thinks to show.
  • once they start dating, they purposely plan one big thing to do when they’re in the same city for competitions. since they’re always competing, they like to take a little time for each other to relax and unwind. one time at an art museum, otabek found a room full of ridiculous modern art and they spent an hour coming up with crazy stories and meanings for each piece. otabek is laughing at a joke yuri cracked about a giant metal sculpture that looks like a butt when yuri goes totally silent. otabek turns to look at him, and his face is totally soft and he just whispers, “i’m so in love with you.” otabek spent ten minutes sitting on a bench so he could stop shaking while yuri made fun of him and rubbed little circles into his back.
  • when yuri is really sleepy, he calls otabek baby, and otabek will always gather him up his arms and just…bask? because he’s so content and in love and it’s so gross and he’s so happy?
  • otabek’s favorite nickname for yuri is honey bee because yuri makes everything feel golden and sweet. yuri only pretends to hate it the first few times he says it.

local psych and writing major with bad grammar here to tell you about subtle body language shit people do when they’re talking to help out with writing interactions:

  • note that people who are high self monitors will notice these behaviors more often and can adapt to different conversations more than those who are low self monitors, who may not realize that they are reacting inappropriately in a situation.
  • second note that we only remember a fraction of dialogue and conversation, what sticks in our mind is how a person made us feel during the conversation
  • women, parents, good teachers, and actors are more sensitive to gestures and expressions and noticing subconscious behaviors in others.
  • please note that some of this may not apply to everyone, keep in mind where these social situations could change for your neurodivergent, mentally ill, and disabled characters

under the cut, i go through non-verbal interaction, gestures, personal space, and eye contact

What was Hyperdontia and Novocaine about?

I keep getting this question a lot, and I’ll admit it’s preeeeeeeeeetty vague so I thought I’d explain it here! Of course this doesn’t mean people can’t make their own interpretations, I’m just sharing since the question is getting asked so much.

Moments In the Jedi Docu-Series That Win the Public’s Heart and Indirectly Save The Universe

  • Anakin constantly wiping out while showing off but then standing up after it and beaming like that was his plan all along
  • Obi-Wan getting caught in a slip-up he can’t gracefully get out of (“No no, I said, “I’d like to help you out of your [throat clears] stance” to Anakin, not, uh, “pants”, of course, I was helping him…correct his form. Sparring. [blinks] We’re Jedi.” [awkward pause] “OK well I think we’re done for today, right? I should go”)
  • Yoda admitting that Obi-Wan is his favorite kid on camera and then trying to claim he didn’t say it
  • Ahsoka and Rex laughing so hard retelling a story about Anakin getting stuck in a ship’s laundry chute that they both are crying [smash cut to Anakin saying “that entire story about the laundry chute is a lie”]
  • Mace Windu, finally breaking into a smile after months of filming and admitting that “Hell YES I love this job! I’m a fucking JEDI!” while wearing his own meme on a T-Shirt
  • Padme and Satine do a joint interview while at some political luncheon and it VERY quickly gets very funny because they are both hitting the white wine pretty hard
  • Quinlan Vos: [being interviewed] Celibate? Kriff no, the Jedi aren’t celibate! [laughs hysterically] No. No no no. No. Like, I don’t even know who started that rumor? But like, not even a little bit. [more laughter] I mean, we get around, you know what I mean? I’ve been with plenty of people. Like, a lot. Dignitaries, senators, bounty hunters –
Obi-Wan: [walking into the shot, whispering harshly] Quin, really, do you think you could conduct yourself with a little bit more decorum? Please?
Quinlan: [waving him away] OK OK fine, Master Kenobi.
[Obi-Wan walks out of the shot]
Quinlan: [looks at the camera, exaggerated whisper] Him too.
Concept: Beauty & the Beast, but without the Classic Faerytale Happy Ending

If you’ve seen the Disney movie Maleficent, remember how she made her curse basically “unbreakable” because the concept of “true love,” as it appears in faerytales, doesn’t actually exist?

What if the witch who cursed our prince (we’ll call him Adam) used the same principle? What if he already had a girlfriend (or boyfriend) and everything, but then he ran out of rose petals, and it still wasn’t enough to break the curse? What if instead of some magical kiss from someone he’d only known a few weeks just instantly turning him human again, he was stuck in the form of a beast for the rest of his life?

Now, imagine that Adam’s partner (guess we’ll call her Belle) doesn’t care if he’ll always be a beast, but she can’t stand to see him being so miserable about it, so she constantly encourages him to love himself, and once his confidence has built up enough, she convinces him to go outside and try to live like a normal person instead of just hiding away in a castle for the rest of his life. Obviously, this is going to take some work and preparation, so Belle starts going around to nearby towns and chatting people up, making friends, so she can eventually introduce them to her boyfriend and they can become his friends too.

Over time, the word spreads that there’s a cursed prince who’s friendly and just wants to live a normal life. People are intimidated by his appearance at first, but most eventually come around and are kind to him. Those that aren’t may form protests against this beast being allowed to coexist with humans, but you can bet your butt that Belle and Adam’s friends are there with their own counter-protests, fighting for nonhumans’ rights to be treated fairly and equally.

Maybe there are other cursed beings who hear about all this going down, so they get together and support each other as well. Eventually, it just becomes a common occurance to see beasts and talking animals, and all sorts of other magical creatures walking around in towns and cities alongside humans, and it’s a great relief for everyone.

Adam thinks back to that day, many years ago, when he realized he was doomed to be a beast for eternity, only now he doesn’t feel so doomed. He looks at Belle, smiles, and holds her hand. She smiles back and thinks of all they’ve been through together, the things they’ve both sacrificed for each other and compromises they’ve each made for the good of their relationship, and this beautiful world they’ve built together, and only now does she truly understand what true love is.

okay but consider this: henry cheng totally retelling the story of how he tried to pick blue up at school to ronan and him taking it as a complete challenge. a week later he shows up in a tractor after her final class yelling at magot to hurry the fuck up, the sheep aren’t going to count themselves. everyone stares at her.

and blue plotting out death in great detail.

welovelain  asked:

So is your new book basically Norse mythology stories but written as stories by you?

Exactly so. It’s me retelling the stories I love from Snorri’s Prose Edda and from the Poetic Edda, in my own words and in my own way.

Me: I don’t think it’s fair to characterise me like that - I think my taste in music is pretty mainstream, for the most part.

My Playlist:

  • Prog metal concept album retelling story of Homer’s Odyssey
  • Sad clown singing cabaret-style Lorde covers
  • 28-minute experimental electronica piece with harpsichord solo in middle
  • Competitive yodeling finalists compilation
  • Sludgecore remix of title theme from Rainbow Brite

Me: Quiet, you.

humans are space orcs- stories

My contribution to the Humans are Space Orcs thread- stories.
Humanity has a fascination with stories unmatched in the civilized Galaxy.
We read, tell, invent, and retell stories with an alaracity unknown to most aliens. While many cultures do have mythologies and hero-stories, these are mostly accounts of actual historical events in oral form. Their heroes are actual people, and their accounts are dry and factual. They are purely meant to inform.
Humans, however, are a completely different story. From the earliest mythologies, stories have been told. Even when humanity entered the age of science and reason, stories continued on. We have stories about magic, stories about science, adventure, love, loss, ends, beginnings- you name it, we have a story about it.
And we don’t just tell these stories, oh no- we write them. Most aliens, whose writing systems are used almost entirely for what we would consider nonfiction, are baffled by the assortment of novels at the library.
“Are these accounts of alternate universes?” They ask in bewilderment.
Their human guides scratch their necks and say, “Nah. They’re not real.”
“Why are they written then?”
“To entertain, mostly. Or make a point. To enable people to escape their lives, I guess.”
“Why?”
And don’t even get me started on movies- so much time and effort spent in something whose sole purpose is to entertain. Effects, cameras, actors- that’s a fun discussion.
“Who is this James Bond? Isn’t it dangerous for a covert operative’s movements to be broadcast like so?” The aliens ask.
“He isn’t real, he’s just a character.” The humans say. “An invention of a writer.”
“Then who is that man? The one on the screen?”
“He’s an actor. His job is to pretend to be other people.”
Aliens are disturbed by the concept of a living being made on deception. An alert, one of many, is sent to the leaders about human’s ability to lie so seemingly easily with their entire bodies.
No human is entirely immune, even if they are not entirely fictional. Old men’s fishing stories, frat boy’s conquest stories, mothers’ stories about their children, even the children have their own stories that they made up entirely on their own. Everyone has a different style of storytelling, and some cultures have a traditional style as well. Some styles have grown obsolete. Some styles are considered boring. However, the fact remains that the most prominent and lasting influence on humanity as a whole are the storytellers. Human civilization is essentially built on word-craft and lies.
The aliens are unsure what to make of this.

*NEW* Pretty Little Liars Endgame (Alternative)

Whilst I still stand by my first endgame theory, today I want to explore an alternative way the endgame could potentially unfold.

One day at Radley, Charlotte accidentally pushed Marion Cavanaugh off the roof. Jessica, who was on the board at Radley, agrees to help her niece Charlotte by ruling Marion’s death a suicide, but internally within Radley, Charlotte blamed Bethany for it. Charlotte reversed the roles when telling her story to the liars in 610 so that they would feel sorry for her.

Jessica feels bad that an innocent patient, Bethany, was blamed for something her niece did so she signs Bethany out of Radley to adopt and ride a horse. Considering she helped Charlotte get away with it, it is the absolute least Jessica can do. But Bethany isn’t appreciative of these sympathetic gifts because she knows that Jessica is having an affair with her father. Jessica asks Bethany to call her “aunt Jessie” as a way of saying “I’m not having an affair with your father, I’m just a long lost aunt hence I’ve been around your father lately!” Bethany throws a tantrum and buckets after Jessica’s lies. “Is it like mother like daughter?” and “can I trust anyone in that family?” says Bethany in her recordings. Bethany’s hatred is building towards two dead characters, ‘mother and daughter’ Charlotte and Jessica. (Even young Charles thought they were a part of the DiLaurentis family for quite some time.)

After Charles’ funeral, Charlotte’s doctors let her go, out of belief that trapping a transgender patient in a mental asylum isn’t doing any good. And, she’s apparently been making progress… again, Bethany was blamed for Charlotte’s fatal mistake. She never returned to Radley as Charlotte: she was free to walk the streets of Rosewood. She created the new alias CeCe Drake, after having found out about her birth mother Mary Drake (although having still never met her). CeCe attended college and shared a roommate, explaining how she knew everyone at Eric Kahn’s party and perhaps how she slipped into the Rosewood High yearbook. This also explains why Charlotte needed a visitors pass to see Mona in Radley, as she was no longer a patient that can sneak down the hall.

During college, CeCe and Noel happened to be at the same frat party. Noel accidentally pushed a girl down the stairs, but of course the bystander ex-Radley patient gets the blame for it. As a result, Charlotte is kicked out of college for something Noel did. Hence Noel helped Charlotte in the dollhouse; he felt he owed something to Charlotte. He took something from her that she worked extra hard for.

While CeCe was off beginning her new life in Rosewood (still before ‘that night’), Bethany was still in Radley, taking medication that should have Charlotte’s name on it, drowning in her own drool. That’s sure to drive her crazy.

“That night”, Bethany escaped with the intent of killing Charlotte as revenge for ruining her life. Jessica, who was Bethany’s caretaker at Radley, got a call that night from Radley workers informing her that Bethany has escaped. “I’m very worried, please send someone”, said Jessica, knowing how much Bethany hates her and her niece. A war was brewing. Charlotte wanted to hurt Bethany before Bethany harms anyone. Charlotte accidentally hit Ali instead of Bethany, but thankfully Mrs. Grunwald came to Ali’s rescue. “I swear I thought it was Bethany, mum” cried Charlotte.

Mona hit Bethany with a shovel thinking she was hitting Ali; she hated Ali that much. The purpose of a psychic saving Ali was because only a psychic could know to come back to Rosewood and save another person: Bethany Young. Mrs Grunwald sensed more danger and went and saved Bethany. I don’t like supernatural elements as much as the next person, but it exists, and we have to acknowledge it and use it.

Notice how the person saving Ali/Bethany is different in the two instances. TWO people were pulled out of the dirt. (Red sleeve vs no sleeve.)

Bethany Young is alive. Bethany Young is Uber A and AD, which stands for After Death. Whilst there have been many deaths over the seasons, Bethany’s “death” was THE death that started it all and so it’s very iconic for her to go by AD. We know AD has to be someone who has access to medical records, as they leaked Yvonne’s abortion and Veronica’s sickness. Who better than someone who successfully faked her death?

Bethany couldn’t stand the idea of that bitch Charlotte getting 5 years treatment and then getting to go home with her family, happily ever after. As revenge, Bethany killed Charlotte the exact same way that Charlotte killed Marion and blamed her for it: Charlotte was pushed off a building (bell-tower).

Here is our clue from the writers that we should be looking at Bethany. In the (FAKE) flashback we saw of Bethany, she was wearing this red sweater.

Yet we saw someone in an awfully similar red sweater walk into the bell-tower the very night Charlotte was killed: Bethany? Again, even though it was a fake flashback and that red sweater doesn’t technically exist, it is the writers foreshadowing.

And if it wasn’t already clear, Bethany killed Jessica, too… the affair that could’ve teared apart her family forever (Bethany might have become related to Charlotte, that thought scared Bethany!) and Jessica also helped Charlotte get away with pushing Marion. Jessica had to go. Season 5A made it extremely easy to guess that Melissa and/or Peter killed Jessica with Peter’s drugs, and hence they lied about where they were the night she was killed. Yet, here we are in 7A, and the writers still haven’t confirmed Melissa and Peter’s involvement. For that reason, I believe the answer is elsewhere. If it really was Melissa and Peter, that could’ve been confirmed years ago. If it really was Melissa and/or Peter, why is it being extended into season 7B? Because there’s more to the story. It was Bethany.

Bethany/AD chooses to frame Melissa for Charlotte’s murder. Out of all people in Rosewood, why did the killer chose Melissa? Because Melissa has a motive that would make sense in front of a jury: Charlotte sent Wren the video of Melissa confessing to burying Bethany the actual person in the grave, which lead to Wren breaking up with her. Melissa’s relationship crumbled, combined with the simple fact that Charlotte is in possession of a video that could destroy Melissa’s reputation forever, is why Bethany decided Melissa is the perfect candidate to frame: she would have a motive to want Charlotte dead.

Bethany stole Melissa’s suitcase, broke the handle and bashed Charlotte’s head with it. She then put the suitcase back before Melissa notices it’s missing… or did she? Whilst unpacking her clothes, Melissa says in 613 “I know I had more clothes in here”. Evidently Melissa’s suitcase was tampered with.

Melissa was the person sending unsigned, emoji texts throughout 6B. She was being harassed by Bethany, that if she doesn’t admit to killing Charlotte or find another killer before the end of the election night, her confession video will be shared with everyone.

How did Bethany even get her hands on this video? From Wren. As we know, Charlotte sent the video to Wren so clearly Wren is in possession of this video. The reason he instantly ended his relationship with Melissa is because Bethany is his sister and he was mad that Melissa potentially killed his sister and didn’t say anything. Of course, she’s alive now, but what a big secret that is to keep.

As Emily stated in 617 after being attacked, “there’s definitely 2 people after us”. Bethany wanted Emily to touch the suitcase handle (why not have a second person to frame?) whilst Melissa was the one trying to get it back to save herself.

Marlene has said there is one question she can’t wait to answer, but she can’t tell us what this question is because the question itself is a spoiler. That question is precisely “who is actually in the grave?“ The answer is one that makes total sense: Alison’s twin. This also explains how the Jane Doe was identified as Alison in the first place: similar DNA.

They foreshadowed this in 513 by showing a dead Alison in a grave. This was the writers telling us that YES, despite all complications, there really is an Alison in the grave. We already have twins; Mary and Jessica. However, scientifically, twins CAN give birth to twins. So, it is possible to have another set of twins involved in the endgame. Also, Marlene has explicitly said that “we won’t see Courtney”. We may never actually find out the name of Ali’s twin. It doesn’t matter. They aren’t alive, they aren’t A like in the books. We will never see them. They are DEAD.

It’s also possible that the person in the grave is a random girl we’ve never met before - probably one of the many new cast members joining the finale.

This is tricky to answer for 2 reasons:

- At the time of this Tweet, Marlene knew there will be a FAKE flashback involving Bethany in 610. Ignore that flashback COMPLETELY. It never happened. That was Charlotte retelling a story of lies.

- There is before the incident regarding her face,

- There is after the incident regarding her face.

What incident?

One day whilst on temporary release, Bethany was with Jenna in Jenna’s garage. Alison and her friends threw fireworks inside and as a result, Jenna was blinded and Bethany was burnt. This is how the show is coming full circle as we are circling right back to the stories of season 1. Bethany hates Ali and the girls for the permanent damage she has suffered.

Alison blamed Toby for ‘The Jenna/Bethany Thing’ which Bethany assumes means that Toby was involved, too. Hence, in a true moment of anger right after her name was announced to the public on television, Bethany blew up Toby’s house.

Note that Bethany never shows her face in her pictures. This is not laziness by any means, she is actually a brilliant artist.

So whilst Bethany is framing Melissa for Charlotte’s murder, she is harassing the Liars over it too because they ruined her life.

Bethany/AD is walking around Rosewood in masks. Her face is deformed, on top of the fact that she’s supposed to be dead. She cannot show her face. Further, 6A revealed that Bethany Young shared a room in Radley with Leslie Stone. That same season we saw Leslie with boxes of glasses identical to those that AD has been wearing. Leslie knows Bethany is alive and she was trying to locate her long lost friend - she found her!

Bethany shot Spencer as not only revenge for burning her (The Jenna/Bethany Thing), but for being the one to bash her over the head that night. Of course, Spencer didn’t actually do it (Mona did) but since everyone in Rosewood thought it was Spencer, Bethany later latched on to this popular belief. (Note: if Alison survived a rock to the head, Bethany survived a bashing to the head, too. Heightened reality, unfortunately.)

This message was from Bethany:

Again, note the blacked face.

This Black Veil person from 401 was Bethany. CeCe’s story of who this person was, revolved around Sara Harvey pulling off a veil to reveal her face, but in reality, there is a (BURNT) Alison mask underneath that veil. CeCe’s version couldn’t be true as Sara never had a mask when she entered the limo. Sara never saw the girls as dolls - Sara was just Charlotte’s decoy, so it makes no sense for Sara to have been playing dolly earlier… This is Uber A.

Why would Sara Harvey care about Bethany Young? She doesn’t. Below is Bethany sending flowers to her family who she misses. She wants to tell them she’s alive and well! But first she wants to finish off this game and punish the people who hurt her.

Despite the above Tweet being from 2013, she is going to follow through with that in these final episodes because:

I know what you’re probably thinking… Bethany being Uber A is not satisfying. To me, it is! It goes right back to season 1 as it revolves around ‘that night’. The person that suffered that night in the pilot, is back for revenge!

I could do a part 2 for this theory to explain who is Bethany. Who are her parents? Is she a DiLaurentis? Is the “aunt Jessie” thing supposed to be taken literally - is she a Drake? Is she someone’s twin? Is Melissa Bethany? Is Sara Harvey Bethany (I hope not, but very possible)? Is Bethany Charlotte’s twin who also transitioned, hence Jason thought he saw CeCe that night (but really it was Bethany, like Charlotte says)? I believe we are dealing with Bethany - but who is Bethany, is for another day. I do NOT believe for a split second they will make Uber A be a person we’ve never met before. That’s pathetic.

When the Bethany-ideas came flooding to me, I googled ‘Bethany is Uber A’ to see the fan consensus on this topic and the first result was an amazing post by @the-outlast. Whilst we have some largely contrasting opinions on some aspects, shoutout to this person for a couple pieces of evidence I used to explain our belief that Bethany is alive :)

Seventeen Reaction to: You Always Waking Them Up With Kisses All Over Their Face

S.Coups: Immediately tries to convince you to go back to sleep. “Taking care of the others is so hard. Let’s lie in a little longer.” He’ll wrap you up in a blanket cocoon, arms and legs encasing you so you can’t move. Not that you want to. With his warm arms and thick legs, you find that he’s right. Maybe you should stay in bed a little longer. He does this every morning, thinking up new excuses to sleep a bit more.

Jeonghan: This particular morning, he was in the middle of some of the boys, who had watched a horror movie and crawled in with you both when they got scared. He beamed at the feeling of your kisses, as he always does, unwrapping his arms from Seokmin to lazily hug you.

“Good morning. Is it time to wake the kids already?”

Joshua: Smiles sweetly, lifting his head up to meet your lips in a chaste kiss. “Hi ~ Good morning. Did you sleep well?” Even though he’s groggy, his first thought is always you. Sometimes he returns the kisses but mostly he’s too tired, needing a few moments to wake up fully.

Jun: ”Why did you wake me up?” Depending on how well he slept, he may be annoyed that you’re waking him up but finds that annoyance disappearing with each of your kisses. He crinkles his nose when you press a kiss to his eyebrow and smiles. “You’re so weird ~” he hums lovingly.

Hoshi: He just wants to stay in bed a little longer. He’ll groan and bury his face in your neck or shoulder or maybe turn away from you altogether, making cute puppy noises. “Five more minutes … please.”

Wonwoo: Tries to play dead sometimes, just wanting to sleep. But eventually he can’t help but smile shyly. He sits up, fluffy hair pointed in all directions. “Do you want kisses in return? Is that why you woke me up?”

Woozi: Always pretends to still be asleep, until you tell him you know he’s faking. Then he’ll laugh, eyes cracking open. “Ah, I’m not faking! I’d still be asleep if you hadn’t woken me up.” You’re the only one he’ll wake up for, and not kill. But that doesn’t mean he wants to get up. “Let’s stay together for a while longer,” he offers, trying to convince you to join him.

DK: Doesn’t want to wake up. Will turn over, trapping you in his arms and laugh. “Stop trying to wake me! I have no schedule today!” Once fully awake, however, he always thanks you for being his gentle alarm and retells horror stories of how some of the others have tried waking him up: “Hoshi stuck his finger up my nose once!”

Mingyu: Barely awake but still enough to notice that “You missed the most important spot.” He puckers his lips, swearing he won’t get out of bed until you kiss him properly. And he means it. Every morning, without fail, he needs his good morning kiss.

The8: Hates having to get up and has a snarky comment prepared. But when his eyes open and he sees your loving face, that anger fades. “Babe, why are you waking me up early? This is time for us to sleep in.” Can be grumpy but in general, that fades when he reminds himself that your kisses aren’t something to ever be annoyed about.

Seungkwan: Wakes up with a smile, giggling. “What’s with the kisses?” Will be shy but actually loves the affection and hates if you don’t wake him up like this every morning. He’ll return the gesture, pressing kisses to your face.

“This is embarrassing ~” he’ll say, planting a kiss to your nose.

Vernon: Will blearily crack his eyes open and smile. “Morning,” he grumbles, in a sleepy morning voice. “Do you want to climb in?” Sleepily opens his arms, hoping to entice you and get more time in bed. If that doesn’t work then he will get up, since he knows you always wake him up for a reason.
