‘Igor?’ said Moist. 'You have an Igor?’
Oh, yes,’ said Hubert. 'That’s how I get this wonderful light. They know the secret of storing lightning in jars! But don’t let that worry you, Mr Lipspick. Just because I’m employing an Igor and working in a cellar doesn’t mean I’m some sort of madman, ha ha ha!’
Ha ha,’ agreed Moist.
Ha hah hah!,’ said Hubert. 'Hahahahahaha!! Ahahahahahahhhhh!!!!!-’
Bent slapped him on the back. Hubert coughed.
Sorry about that, it’s the air down here,’ he mumbled.

First Encounters - 2p!England/Oliver Kirkland

Oliver watched with half-lidded eyes as heavy raindrops pelted against the windows, creating a curtain that seemed to separate his bakery from the outside world. Isolation hung in the air like fog, and Oliver was struggling to keep his eyes open.

“I don’t want to close early, but,” he watched as a brilliant flash of lighting lit up the world, followed by a roll of thunder. “Well, I doubt anyone will be visiting me today.”

Oliver sighed, pushing himself off the counter and making his way into the kitchen. Everything was pristine, from the counter tops to the appliances, and it made his heart ache. He wanted to be busier, but business was slow - more so nonexistent. Who knew small towns were so ruthless when it came to new establishments?

The delicate jingle of a bell reached Oliver’s ears. He recognised it, but he was struggling to accept his eager assumptions. Could it be? Was it really…?

Through the kitchen doorway, Oliver peeked into the shop and discovered a stranger standing near the front door. They were drenched from head to toe, and they were muttering to themselves as they ran their fingers through their soaked hair. A small puddle was forming beneath them.

‘Poor thing.’ Oliver grabbed a tea towel before entering the room. “Hello!” he greeted, ignoring the way the stranger flinched as they whipped around to face him. “You’re the first person I’ve seen all day. What on earth were you doing outside in such dreadful weather?” Oliver offered them the tea towel, smiling as they graciously took it.

After drying their face, they laughed sheepishly and said, “I thought I could beat the weather and make it to the grocery store, but,” lightning and thunder interrupted them, “well, I misjudged.”

Oliver clasped his hands together against his chest. “Well, take your time drying off. You can hang your jacket on the coat rack right there and take a seat wherever you like.” He gestured to the cozy room around him with open arms. “Would you like something warm to drink?”

The visitor began to shake their head, then hesitated. “Um, maybe [warm beverage]?”

“Of course!” Before leaving, Oliver held out his hand. “By the way, my name’s Oliver Kirkland. I own this little shop.” Oliver jolted when they took his hand. They were freezing!

“It’s nice to meet you, Oliver. I’m s/o.”

He shook their hand. “S/o. What a lovely name~.” Oliver spun around and headed towards the kitchen. “Make yourself comfortable! I’ll be back in a jiffy!”

When Oliver reached the kitchen, he quickly went to work slipping into his apron and putting his appliances to use. Even though s/o’s visit was purely out of convenience, this was his first real customer, and Oliver was nothing but grateful.

Once their drink was ready, Oliver presented it to s/o. Their eyes sparkled like stars when they saw the steaming beverage, and a bubbly smile quickly warmed their face. “Thank you very much.”

Oliver beamed. “Think nothing of it.” He lingered as s/o carefully brought the cup to their lips and took a small sip. On edge, he asked, “Do you like it?”

   S/o nodded. “It’s delicious!”

All concern was swept away from Oliver’s mind, and he placed his hand over his chest as he breathed a sigh of relief. “That’s good. I was a little worried, but I guess I pulled through this time.” He asked, “Would you like anything else? Maybe something to eat?”

S/o took another sip before shaking their head. “No, it’s okay. Just this is fine.”

“Are you sure?” If he had canine ears, they would be drooping. “Don’t be shy. How about I give you a free sample of something?” Even Oliver could sense how pushy he was sounding, but he wanted to accommodate his precious customer as much as possible!

S/o took a second to contemplate his offer. “Well, if you’re offering, then I suppose I could give something a try.” They looked towards the display case. “What do you suggest?”

Oliver bounced across the room. “I have some cookies that were baked just this morning. Would you like to try one?” S/o nodded, and Oliver went to work grabbing one from the plateful. “I think it will complement your drink nicely.”

As he placed the cookie in front of s/o, they said, “I should’ve come in here sooner. I didn’t realise it was such a nice place.” They scratched the back of their head. “I assumed it was meant more for fancy, upper-class people. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to afford anything in here.”

“Really?” Oliver crossed his arms and tilted his head in thought. “I suppose I might come off that way, but I think my prices are fairly reasonable. And I don’t discriminate. Anyone and everyone is welcome here!” His found his heart fluttering when s/o giggled at him.

“I’ll be sure to spread the word.” S/o took a bite of the cookie, instantly humming in content. “This tastes so good! I think I owe the rain my thanks for making me take cover here.” They glanced towards the front windows. “Maybe it was fate?”

Their tone was lighthearted, but it stuck with Oliver. Fate? Did he really believe in such a thing? It was far fetched, but… it sounded pleasant on his ears. Fate.

His thoughts were chased away when something rang in s/o’s pocket. They pulled out their phone and skimmed through a text message. “Oh!” they exclaimed. “My ride’s here!”

“Your… ride?” Oliver suddenly noticed a yellow glow coming into view through the windows.

S/o finished their cookie and quickly drank the rest of their beverage. “Yeah, I texted a friend of mine and they said they’d give me a lift back home.” When s/o was on their feet, they dug into their pocket and pulled out their wallet. “How much do I owe you for the drink?”

Oliver waved his hand. “Consider it on the house.”

They stopped fumbling and stared at Oliver. “Really? Okay, well,” they dug out a dollar and placed it on the table, “at least let me tip you.” Before Oliver could retort, s/o was hurrying to grab their jacket and head to the front door.

As they opened the door, causing the bell to jingle, Oliver quickly caught their attention and said, “Come again soon, s/o!”

S/o looked over their shoulder and flashed a smile, like the lightning that kept lighting up the earth. “See you later, Oliver!”

They disappeared into the rain, letting the door close behind them and ring the little bell one last time. As silence crept back into the room, Oliver sighed and began clearing s/o’s table. He took everything back into the kitchen, taking note of how warm s/o’s mug still felt in his hand.

“They could have stayed longer,” he mused. “If their ride didn’t show up, perhaps we could have talked some more.”

He stood still over the sink for a moment, staring at s/o’s cup. Even the booming thunder couldn’t shake him. He finally placed the mug in the sink and looked through the doorway towards the front of the bakery.

“I hope s/o comes back soon.”

Mia’s POV:

“Hey Kid, get back here with those items!” The cashier from the store yells after me. I run out the store at lightning speed, the adrenaline rushing over me and my heart beats out of my chest. I drop my skateboard to the ground, stepping on it and skating away from the store. I’ve missed doing this, it’s been a while. I turn around to see the cashier no where in my sight. Looks like I’ve gotten away with it, again. I victoriously smirk at myself, skating my way back to the shithole, also known as my house. The familiar wail of sirens from a police car follows right behind me. Shit, not again. I use my right foot to accel my pace, trying to find a way to escape, but the wailing of the car is getting closer. I take a sharp turn to my right, not realizing where it leads up to, a dead end. Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me. I look around for any way to escape and I climb on top of the dumpster, but not being able to go anywhere past that. I hear the siren stop and the police rushes out of the car.

“Put your hands up where I can see them!” He commands, his gun pointing directly at me.

For you, the odds of being struck by lightning during your life are roughly 1 in 12,000. And it’s good the odds are so low. Generally speaking, getting struck by lightning is not a pleasant experience. But consider, what if you were to gain power every time you were struck by lightning? This is exactly what happens to Zapdos, the legendary electric-type from first gen. The pokédex tells us that when hit with lightning, Zapdos isn’t injured, doesn’t take damage like most pokemon would. Instead, it gains power. Seems like a good place to start for our analysis today.

We’ve already looked at several electric-type pokémon with abilites that would apply to Zapdos. For example, Zapdos likely stores electricity from lightning using electric organs similar to those we talked about in Zekrom and Tynamo. Zapdos might create thunderclouds to fly around and hide in similar to Manectric. In any case, Zapdos has a remarkable talent of absorbing lightning without being damaged. To understand how, first let’s talk about when non-Zapdos creatures get struck by lightning.

Lightning, of course, is a discharge of electric current from the thundercloud. This electric current is made up of a stream of electrons, about 300 kiloVolts of energy traveling close to the speed of light through the air. The plasma has a temperature of roughly 50,000 degrees F (27,700 C), which is about five times hotter than the surface of the sun. It takes only 3 milliseconds to travel through your body and into the ground, and you can imagine that even in that short amount of time, it can do a lot of damage.

The bolt of lightning can cause third degree burns, it can burst eardrums, pass through the skull and literally cook a brain, stop a heart from beating, cause serious nerve damage and more. The damage is caused by the small amount of the lightning that our bodies absorb while the lightning is on its way traveling to the ground. If Zapdos absorbs the entire lightning bolt and not just a small fraction of it like us, surely it would experience much more damage, right?

The reason lightning is so dangerous to us is because humans aren’t very good conductors of electricity. The lightning can’t pass through us easily, without meeting resistance. But, since lightning is so powerful, the resistance doesn’t stop it and instead, the lightning stops us, doing all this damage to tear through the resistance and continue its path towards the ground. The resistance of our skin is as high as 100,000 Ohms, and the resitance of muscle, bones, and everything inside is roughly 1,000 Ohms. But, when it is hit by lightning (or any high-voltage shock), the lightning does all this damage to lower the resistance of our bodies to about 500 Ohms: something it can more easily pass through.

So, back to Zapdos. How does it not get fried every time it absorbs a lightning strike? Zapdos must have a structure in its body that is a very good conductor: a path for the lightning to travel through and follow, leading right to the area in its body where it can all be safely absorbed and stored the electrical energy (its capacitor-like electrical organ). It’s likely a secondary nervous system, guiding the electrical impulse of the lightning to the proper organs the way the electrical pulses of our brains cause our muscles to move in our nervous systems. It wouldn’t surprise me if this function was connected to it’s feathers too, if its follicles where the feathers connect act as the entry points for this system. In any case, Zapdos’ body allows the electricity to easily pass through it in this specific pathway, avoiding all of Zapdos’ vital organs and other body parts that have a higher resistance and could be damaged by electricity. In any case, Zapdos seems like quite the legendary creature.

Since Zapdos is a bird, I think it is also worth mentioning the common “bird on a power line” problem. Birds sit on power lines all the time, and the electricity flowing through power lines can have 50 - 700 kV of electricity (as much as lightning strikes, so why don’t they get shocked?

The trick is in the voltage difference. Electrical current only flows if it is being “pushed” by a voltage difference, such as a battery. Close points on a power line have the same potential energy (voltage), so if a bird places both feet on the cable, both feet are touching the same voltage, therefore there is no voltage difference and so no current is actually flowing through the bird. Lightning, on the other hand, there’s a huge voltage difference: 300 kiloVolts in the clouds, and close to 0 in the ground. So the current flows from one to the other pretty quickly, and you don’t want to be in the way.

Zapdos has a highly-conducting secondary nervous system, which allows lightning to safely enter its body and guides the energy around vital organs and into Zapdos’ electrical organ, where it can safely absorb and store the energy to use later.

Storm Hero: Tempest
Quirk:Weather Bender
Type:Emitter
Storms are summoned from manipulating elements in the atmosphere. Tempest can also surf on clouds he creates. The staff and poles on his arms and back functions as lightning rods that can store electricity for a lightning attack. By focusing power, different storm types can be created besides wind and rain.

Cons: If there is too much heat around, storms are weaker and take longer to recover. Overusing his quirk makes it harder to control the weather. When this happens, switching storm types is impossible until composure is regained.

Electricity-storing objects like Pikachu’s cheeks are known as capacitors, a common element found in almost any circuit. But what is the science behind them? How does Pikachu store energy, and how does it collect the energy to store?

Well, the secret to a capacitor lies in a value called capacitance. Like the spring constant discussed in Spoink’s entry, the value of capacitance is unique to every capacitor, depending on what it’s made of, whether or not it’s filled, and how close the plates are to one another.

The capacitance is given by

C = q/V

Where q is the charge on one plate and V is the voltage between them.

We know Pikachu is capable of both storing and releasing lightning, so let’s take one bolt of lightning as our standard here. A typical lightning bolt is actually a series of small discharges, lasting milliseconds each for a total of around 0.2 seconds. A typical lightning strike has a charge of 15 Coulombs, although the bigger ones can be as high as 350 C. The voltage is anywhere from 10 to 100 million Volts.

Assuming Pikachu’s Cheeks can store the largest bolts of lightning, their Capacitance is 3.5 μF.

This, actually, is a lot more reasonable than I was anticipating. In the circuits I’ve worked with, capacitors are generally in the micro Farad range, which is exactly what we find here. If you want another comparison, the Capacitance of the human body is around 400 pico-Farads: about 10% of Pikachu’s cheeks.

But let’s put this value to use. You can think of capacitors like a bucket, that can be filled with charge. However, just like you can have an empty bucket, you can have an empty capacitor. Citing the pokedex, Pikachu charges up while it’s sleeping, presumably through Static Electricity. You’ve experienced this if you’ve ever assaulted your hair with a balloon, or touched a metal doorknob after shuffling across the room in your wool socks. Even lightning itself is a form of Static Discharge. This also explains why Pikahu’s Ability is called “Static”.

The energy of a static discharge, and therefore Pikachu’s Attack, is given by:

E = ½CV^2

For a move like Thunder, the electrical energy would be 35,000,000,000 Joules. For Thunder Shock, a small  static shock, it’s only a few hundred milliJoules.

It’s evident that Pikachu can control when, where, and how much energy to release at once, making it a dangerous pokemon to deal with. Particularly around sensitive electronic equipment.
