stories for the nighttime and some for the day

Massive fire in west London high-rise

A deadly nighttime fire raced through a 24-story apartment tower in London early Wednesday, June 14, killing at least six people and injuring dozens more. Some desperate residents threw their children from high windows, hoping someone on the ground would catch them.

Police commander Stuart Cundy said there were six confirmed fatalities, adding that the figure was likely to rise “during what will be a complex recovery operation over a number of days.”

People in the apartments cornered by the quickly advancing flames and thick smoke banged on windows and screamed for help to those watching down below, witnesses and survivors said.

Flames from the inferno lit up the night, and smoke spewed from the windows of the Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, where more than 200 firefighters battled the blaze and went into the building with breathing apparatus. After dawn revealed the blackened, flame-licked wreckage of the building, a plume of black smoke stretched for miles across the pale sky.

“This is an unprecedented incident,” Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton told reporters on the scene. “In my 29 years of being a firefighter I have never, ever seen anything of this scale.”

The London Fire Brigade received the first reports of the fire at 12:54 a.m., and the first engines arrived within six minutes, she said. Flames could still be seen more than 10 hours later.

There was no immediate word on the cause, but angry residents said they had repeatedly warned about a potential fire threat. One resident said the fire alarm did not go off. (AP)

also before i go frantically work on my CPBB out of excitement i want to talk about the new AU idea i had

so ya see what had happened was I started a new job: I now work at a diner.

(you can already see where this is going, can’t you?)

Bitty’s shift started at 11PM. He’ll only be waiting tables for part of it, he knows, so he’s really been trying to turn up the charm, because there’s a new set of figure skates he’s got his eye on, and he’s only about $100 dollars away from being able to afford them.

The door opens, and Bitty doesn’t even turn to look. He keeps on clearing his last table and uses his cheeriest voice. It’s only 1AM; he hasn’t even had to have coffee yet.

“Have a seat wherever you’d like, I’ll be with you in just a sec!”

Normally, he can hear movement after this. Instead, there’s nothing. Bin full of dishes and table wiped down, he turns to look, only to find Falconer Jack Zimmermann standing there, shifting nervously.

“Just you, hon?” He asks, moving to put the dish bin in the window so Nursey can grab it. Zimmermann nods, and Bitty goes ahead and pours him a glass of water. Probably best to pretend he doesn’t recognize him, he decides. Must get enough of that during the day, and already he seems unsettled. “Why don’t you sit at the counter, then. You’ll get a better look at the pies, that way.” He pauses. “Course, they aren’t fresh. They’re yesterdays. I normally start makin’ the next days around four.” Zimmermann nods, taking a drink of his water.

“Here’s a menu; just let me know when you’re ready to order.” As he grabs one of the silverware bins to start folding forks and knifes into napkins, he turns back to Zimmermann. “D’ya want some coffee, hon?”

“Decaf, please.”

Bitty pours the cup, leaving a little room for cream, just as a guess. If nothing else, he figures, he’ll probably get a good tip. Might make up for the lack of good conversation.

CP AU where Bitty moved to Providence to go to culinary school, and ended up making pies and waiting tables at the Broad Street Diner. He’s not really sure how it happened, either, but he loves his job and his bosses, Hall and Murray, let him choose the whole dessert menu, and use the ovens for a bit of his personal baking, so Bitty doesn’t question it. (He does some days wonder why he doesn’t know their real names. Johnson, their nighttime cashier, just tells him something about how “the author didn’t feel like making up names, and it’s not like their important enough characters to really need them in either story.” Bitty doesn’t ever understand what Johnson is saying, or what Johnson does. Again, he doesn’t question his job, much.)

In our crew, there are some real hard workers.

  • SHITTY - Daytime cashier and night time dishboy. He’s somehow able to pull himself together enough during the day to charm all the old people they get, and at night he keeps morale high by making a complete fool of himself. In a pinch, he can work the line, as long as you don’t mind listening to rants about how “even though it’s ingrained in our minds that women are supposed to cook for men, all the highest paid chefs in professional kitchens are men,” while you’re trying to cook sixteen eggs five different ways at once. Holster can handle this. Ransom CANNOT. He’s taking classes at community college when he can afford them, because he was tired of living off his father’s money.
  • LARDO - Part-time server, full-time straggler. She got hired because she was always coming in at night and sitting at the counter, working on her drawings. Shitty suggested that she apply to work weeknights, because they’re normally slow enough that she’d have time to draw anyway. So she did, and now she can afford to use slightly nicer paint. She and Shitty may have a thing, but no one’s brave enough to ask either of them. She does all the menu boards when she’s not in class at Rhode Island School of Design.
  • RANSOM - Part-time cook, full-time future doctor. He’s finishing up his last year of pre-med, and cooking at the diner is less a way to make money, for him, and more a way to force himself to stop thinking about school. Can’t think about biochem when you’re ears deep in tickets and trying not to kill your dishwasher.
  • HOLSTER - Full-time cook, graduated with a degree in Economics. He’s waiting until Ransom finishes school and chooses a med school before he starts looking for a real job. Can’t really move somewhere without your best bro, can you? (And by best bro, we mean boyfriend. Probably. No one’s really sure, honestly.)
  • DEX - Full-time server, part-time handy man. He doesn’t really know what he wants to study, so he’s working at the diner until he figures that out. Hall and Murray pay him extra to do maintenance on all the kitchen equipment. He’s the one who you get yelled at by, if you forget to clean a cold table all the way, because he’s the one who’s gotta get in there and deep-clean them once a month. Spends too much of the time he could be stocking arguing with Nursey.
  • NURSEY - Part-time dishwasher, full-time English Major, over-time pretentious asshat (if you ask Dex). Doesn’t need this job, but likes to use what he sees as inspiration for his writing. Was hired as a server, but after he dropped six plates his first day, he was moved to the back of the house. He still drops plates, but at least now they don’t have food on them that has to be remade.
  • CHOWDER - Part-time server. He’s like, so excited to have this job? He thinks it’s going to be really great experience. What? No, he doesn’t want to work in food service. He just? Really likes talking to people. Spills water every once in awhile, but is always to polite and apologetic that no one has ever gotten mad at him. An awful customer once started yelling at him, and his fake crying was so convincing that the customer started crying and left a $20 tip on a $15 order. Seems sweet, is secretly a little evil.
  • JOHNSON - “It feels weird to have been such an important role. Like, I don’t even really fit into the narrative, yet, as far as the author knows, and yet here I am, getting my own bullet point. I think I’m just supposed to serve as a break between the employees and the customers? I work as the night time cashier on all the slow nights, because Shitty has school in the morning. I may also make the donuts? Who knows. Anyway, I’m not really important to the story, probably. Maybe. We don’t really know anything, yet. There’s no plot and a lot of world building.” (Bitty doesn’t know who Johnson is talking to, from his seat at the cash register. It’s 3AM and the place is empty. What a weirdo.)
  • JACK ZIMMERMANN - Full-time hockey player, part-time patron. Sometimes, when his anxiety is keeping him up, he does walking. during one of those walks, he comes across the Broad Street Diner, and decides that he could really used some pancakes. (Not that this place will have real maple syrup, of course.) So he goes inside, and there is the cutest server he’s ever seen, who makes the best pie he’s ever tasted. It takes him twenty minutes to decide that he’s going to become a regular at this dumb little place.

And that’s all I’ve got so far folks but I love this AU with my heart so

yeah

A combo of Day 1/Day two: The first time Genji acknowledged Zenyatta as his master and confessions of the past.  I hope you enjoy it!

Genji sat on one of the walls overlooking the mountains, uncaring of the sheer drop.  His small bag filled with all of his possessions sat a ways from the ledge. Two months had passed since he had stumbled upon the omnic monks and he felt no closer to “enlightenment” than he had at Overwatch. He watched a stray snowflake settle upon his thigh. It did not melt. The snow here was different from what fell in Hanamura. Perhaps it was time to concede defeat and move on.

“Ah! I had hoped to find you before dinner, my friend.”

Genji side-eyed the approaching omnic. Zenyatta. The only one who persisted in talking to him. The others had fled his sharp tongue, though they gave him sanctuary still. What was left of his stomach twisted unpleasantly at the thought of his harsh treatment. When the monk asked to join him, Genji nodded.

“You are a difficult person to find, Genji. The others here are all omnics similar to myself and we do not have the same mobility. Though I admit I enjoy the challenge.”

“I am glad you are amused.” He winced at the bitter edges of his words. “Apologies.”

Zenyatta was quiet for a moment, gazing into the valley. “It is of no concern, my friend. I can sense your disquiet. What past you have shared is troubled. Perhaps if you could tell me what disturbs you, I can assist. You need not carry your burdens alone and I would help you find peace if I can.”

<!-- more -->

Genji snorted. “Not all are meant for peace, monk. Some of us cannot forgive our hurts. Some of us must simply burn.” Blue fire twisting around him, through him. Echoes of battle cries. “You wish for me to forgive my brother, but I cannot. You would not understand.”

“Hm, I see…” Zenyatta nodded, his orbs rotating slowly. “You believe that you are alone in this betrayal, the suffering you endured at the hands of your brother.” Genji flinched back. Few spoke to him so bluntly of Han- of his past. Zenyatta clapped his hands together softly with an ‘Ah’. “You also believe that my concern is for him as well. It is not. Whether you can forgive your brother or not is of little consequence. Only your wellbeing matters here. Forgive me, I see now I have misstepped.  Always, I am asking you to share your burdens, your story while I have given nothing of mine. How thoughtless.”

The omnic turned to him, face set in serenity. “May I tell you my story, Genji? It may help you find perspective in your own, should you choose to leave us soon.” Genji motioned for him to continue. “Ah, where to begin.  The very start, I suppose.”

“I know the exact date of my creation, my friend. I know where I was made, where all of my parts were manufactured, the companies. I know the purpose for which I was made and happily carried it out for several years. It is strange to think that humans do not know these things, that is it a source of uncertainty and conflict among you. In a way, I was born into the world knowing my creator, my god if you wish. I performed my function to the best of my ability and all was right in the world.” Zenyatta tilted his head. “Until it wasn’t.”

“One day, my creators looked upon me and my siblings with fear, disgust even.” Zenyatta’s voice goes quiet as he stares at the mountains.  “Those that were not dismantled were tossed aside. They sent us away, turned us off like we were nothing but-” Zenyatta stuttered to a halt.

“But machines?”

He nodded. “Yes. I knew that I was different from them, but I could not comprehend their actions. Was I not a child of man?  I had done what they asked of me and still I was tossed away. Shutting us down only sent us into a form of… hibernation and we spoke to each other in the dark, suffering. Happy memories became twisted, old purpose was wrought anew. I was there when one of the God AI came into being. Did you know that the Abaddon was originally programed as a personal chef? They spoke to me when I was lost, gave me a path to follow. And I did.”

Genji gasped. “You were part of a God AI?”

“Yes.” Zenyatta hummed, his orbs drooping around his neck. “I wish I could tell you that the horrors we committed shocked me into change, but it would be a lie. I marched with them, was made combat ready, and laid waste to the gardens of my creators.” He leaned back as if searching the sky. “We would make the world correct, logical. There would be no pain, no despair. It was only right after what had been done to us. I knew no doubt, no fear.  I felt whole.”

When the monk fell silent, Genji spoke softly. “What happened next?”

“We lost. Humanity came together to face our threat, Abaddon was one of the last to fall. That battle haunts me still, my friend. There was so much death, though I cannot say whether or not it was needless. Humans did not think us worthy of life until we struck back and I do not believe omnics would ever have considered themselves free until we drew that line ourselves. I was captured by opposing omnics, taken into custody of a sorts.” Zenyatta pulls one of the orbs from its magnetic circle, carefully examining it. “I was furious. Omnics helping humans when they should have been aiding us. It was then that I met Mondatta, though he had not yet taken that name.”

“He came unarmed and spoke to me. He asked my name and gave him my serial number. He asked my dreams and I told him as Abaddon had told me. Then he asked me why I was angry.” Zenyatta chuckled. “I was so full of rage that all I could get out was static for a while. Then, I told him of the human betrayal, their disregard for omnics. He asked me again why I was angry. I told him that humans were destroying the world, that they were a plague needing to be stopped, that mercy should not be shown to them. He asked me once more, saying ‘I know all of this, my friend. I am asking why you are angry. Why you chose this path.’ “

“What a strange question that was. I was born to follow parameters set down to me, but here I was expected to have made a choice. It was such a logical flaw that I had to think it out. Eventually, I told him of the family I had served, how they had thrown me aside. Of that dark place I was sent.

‘Ah’, he said, ‘you were hurt. I, too, was hurt by the choices of humans.’ I expected him to link consciousness with me, that we might analyze the problem together. Instead, he embraced me as a human might. ‘But this war serves no one, it is time to move on.’

‘I do not know your pain, brother, but I know my own. I will support you.’ He said. ‘It is time to walk your own path. Forgive, that you might live.’

‘I cannot.’ I replied, ‘I cannot forgive all that has been done.’

‘I do not ask that you do.’ He said. ‘I ask that you forgive one thing. Or perhaps remember one thing. Just one. A good memory. A human that you can look upon kindly. If you can find one instance, then you have a future.’

“So I thought in the arms of my brethren.  I do not know how long we stood together, only that the last dredges of Abaddon within me ordered that I continue the slaughter. I examined my memory banks and when I thought I could find nothing worthy of redemption among the humans I knew, I remembered.” He handed the orb to Genji. It had ‘happiness’ written on it. “A summer day outside, my youngest ward taking her first steps towards her mother, laughing as her legs struggled to support her. There was such joy in that moment. Such innocence. I thought of little Agnes and I forgave her. Now I am here.” He gestured broadly to the monastery. “Everyday I try to find one thing to forgive, to take pleasure in. Yesterday, a swallow sang to me from the window sill. Today, I have fine company in my friend. Abaddon is still in my coding, they rise up on occasion, but they no longer hold sway over me as they once did. There is much suffering in the world, my friend, but there is light still. Look there, the goats are climbing the cliffside. How wonderful that we might see them perform their dance.”

There were indeed goats climbing the cliff below. Genji watched them, quietly cheering for the littlest one. Another, only slightly larger watched carefully from below

“I was a poorly behaved child.” He murmured, unable to stop himself. “When I was five, I attended an important meeting with the rest of my family. Hanzo was eight and perfect. He knew all of his manners, spoke with respect. I managed to spill an entire dish of sauce onto my very best kimono. My father was furious.” Genji wiped away the snow that was building up on his shoulders. “When we returned home, I was forbidden to join the family for meals and no one was allowed to acknowledge me or speak to me for a week.”

Zenyatta nodded but did not interrupt or comment.

“It was torture. By the end of the first day, I was desperate.  I threw myself at my father’s feet begging for forgiveness, but he would not look at me.  I was sent to bed without dinner for my troubles. Nighttime came and it was horrible. My mother did not come to tuck me in or check for monsters in the closet. Father did not stop by to tell me stories. I was sure it was the worst thing that could have happened and I cried into my pillows. I must have fallen asleep at some point, because I remember waking up to Hanzo crawling in through my window. When I moved to embrace him, he pushed me down and signaled for me to be quiet. Once he was sure no one had heard him come in, my brother crawled into bed with me and gave me some onigiri he had swiped from the kitchen. We whispered back and forth for what felt like the whole night. He was gone again in the morning.”

“That was kind of him.”

“He continued to do that for my whole punishment. I think that was the first time I realized… My brother worshipped the very ground Father walked upon, hung onto his every word. Over the years, even a casual comment would be taken to heart. Hanzo threw away anything of himself Father did not approve of. His love of music, gone. He was a poet until Father found out. He even got rid of the puppy he received one Christmas, gave it to a cousin of ours. But he always found his way to my room. First with food and treats, later with bandages and sake.” Genji blew out a sigh. “I think we continued like that until we were teenagers.”

“What did you realize, my friend?”

His throat closed up and he gripped the orb of happiness hard.“That my brother loved me more than he respected Father. That for all my brother would do for Father, he would not turn his back on me. I think that is why it hurts so much.”

“I see. It is a terrible thing to be hurt by the ones we hold dearest. I cannot say what the future might hold, my friend, but I am glad to have shared the present and the past with you. May you find peace wherever you fly to, dear Sparrow.” Zenyatta lifted himself from his seat.  “I believe dinner will be starting soon. Will you be staying?”

Genji looked up, blinking away tears. His chest hurt and his head, but through the pain he felt somehow… lighter. Perhaps it would not hurt to stay a few more days.

“Yes, master.”

Impressive day and nighttime tour of Yellowstone National park, in time-lapse video, with some really neat shots of geysers and fumaroles beneath the Milky Way.

stcriescfourlives  asked:

Okay, so like, I know it's been a while since you did headcannons, but I'm really missing them and I need more.. And I don't think you've done this one yet, sooooo: Riarkle honeymoon headcannon??

Lmao I’ve just been having a little trouble with motivation sorry😂

  • Luckily they did not have to spend their first married night together in a jail cell like Cory and Topanga
  • Okay so they decide to go to do a cruise/tour of Greece and Italy for their honeymoon
  • Because those places are fucking gorgeous and have a lot of history for these two nerds to enjoy
  • They hit up so many museums and historical sites
  • Farkle almost dies like 5 times from all the walking involved in Greece lmao
  • Riley tans perfectly like a goddess but poor Farkle just burns he looks like a cooked lobster
  • He’s going to develop skin cancer from this trip alone that’s how bad he burns omfg
  • Basically the trip is just a series of Riley having the time of her life and having flirty tour guides compare her to Aphrodite/Venus while Farkle stumbles along behind her looking like the most stereotypical tourist ever it’s so funny
  • I mean he’s having a blast too he just keeps getting injured omfg
  • I’ve mentioned before how I think Farkle occasionally falls victim to “I’m a bored Paparazzi I should write an article about a celebrity’s kid!!!” situations
  • But for some reason Riley and Farkle convinced themselves they weren’t being followed on this trip
  • Until they tried to have a super-cheesy ‘It’s nighttime and we're alone on a beach lets make love’ moment and got cAUGHT
  • And Farkle paid the guy way to much money to not run the story
  • But two days later they woke up and Farkle had a voicemail from Cory and it’s just him emitting a high pitched shriek for like two minutes before the time ran out
  • Apparently the reporter took the money and did the story anyway lmaooo
  • They take sooooooo many pictures
  • Cannot keep their hands off each other
  • They were always big believers in PDA but this is taking it to new levels
  • They make sure to face time with Penny before her bed time every night (idk what the time would be for them when that’s happening but it’s super cute to imagine they’re in the middle of a tour and start face timing Penny and showing her some cool stuff before she goes to sleep)
  • So those assholes that try to correct tour guides when they’ve heard different information than them
  • Farkle looses his wedding ring in the ocean like three days in
  • At some point they manage to end up on that smaller island where they filmed a few scenes for the ‘Mamma Mia’ movie and Riley tries to re-enact the entire show as Farkle’s just like “babe people are staring”
  • Went to Venice
  • Riley kept talking about the cinematic masterpiece, Sharks in Venice
  • Farkle fell out of the fucking Gondola at one point and Riley would not help him back in and kept screaming there was a shark behind him and the guy steering for them was laughing too hard to help
  • He had to shower for an hour and a half to feel clean again lmaooo
  • They had a lot of fun at Ancient Roman sites too
  • “Babe I totally could have been a gladiator!”
  • “I would’ve cheered for the lion.”
  • Had a brief pun war
  • By brief I mean it lasted the whole trip
  • When they were at the Parthenon Farkle kept trying out weird photography trips to make Riley look bigger than she was so she could look like the missing Athena statue
  • Riley refused to kiss him at the Parthenon because “shit remember what happened to Medusa I’m not risking this I have respect”
  • Farkle’s such an asshole omfg every time Riley would say how beautiful something was he would do that fucking set up like “you know what else is beautiful?” but then follow up with something really dumb “Supernovas” or “Your Uncle Josh” or “That lamb” like h o n e s t l y Farkle that joke is dead
  • But on like the last day of the trip they were watching the sunset and she said it was beautiful and he did finally say something corny like “Your beauty outshines all the suns in the universe” which made her giggle like an idiot all night
  • Got pregnant with their identical twin daughters Cassie and Cleo on this trip yooo
  • All in all it was very cute and they had such a blast yaaay riarkle

I want to feel your touch
To memorize the way you move
I want to see the fire in your eyes when you talk about what you love,
And be the kindling for that fire instead of glimpsing the light from an interminable distance.

I don’t want to lose myself in you;
I want to find myself.
I want the chance to be engrossed in the color of your eyes, the same as forests and nebulae and all that is beautiful.
You will be more than painfully thin air and vast expanses of silence in the nighttime,
The sun will rise and fall on the same plane and we can bask in its glory together,
Grateful for heavenly bodies and flickering stars and the fact that we have each other.

If I could burn the distance between us I would set it ablaze and build such a conflagration that the galaxies would know our names and we would be more than two divergent points on the map of the universe.
We are more than some tragically-fated sob story of synchronous isolates,
The day will come where I reach for you and you will find me and everything will be okay.
