stop with the wake me up when september ends jokes

Green Day is trending on Tumblr, and normally that would be great news. However, it’s trending because it’s October 1st. Everyone is making up jokes about Wake Me Up When September Ends, and I’m so fucking pissed. That song is about Billie Joe’s father who passed away. It’s not supposed to be fucking funny. He’s said that he doesn’t like it and has asked people to stop. It pisses me off that eleven years after American Idiot came out, people still don’t seem to get this. Your jokes aren’t fucking funny. Please stop it.

Okay guys, it’s that time of year again and I feel it’s necessary for me to say this to anyone who’s new here (or just an asshole) to save everybody the trouble of calling you out individually. I’m going to clear up two issues here because I encounter both of them every year and they piss me off more and more as time goes on.

Firstly, DO NOT MAKE ‘WAKE ME UP WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS’ JOKES. ESPECIALLY NOT DIRECTLY TO THE BAND, AND ESPECIALLY NOT TO BILLIE JOE.

Billie Joe wrote this song in memory of his father who passed away. I shouldn’t need to explain why it’s insensitive to tweet him things like “Time to wake up Green Day” on October 1st. He hates it. He has publicly expressed that he hates this. He got woken up at midnight on air by a radio host one year. It’s not funny.

Secondly, for the love of god please stop reblogging that infamous piece of shit picture. You know the one. That ballpoint pen illustration of ten year old Billie crying in his bedroom with the fabricated story about his father’s funeral? Yeah. I get that you have good intentions or that maybe you just thought that the story behind it was true, but it’s false information and it’s not good to romanticise traumatic events like that.

I say this every year on at least one social media platform but I’d really appreciate if people could circulate this information so we can nip it in the bud this year.

Friendly PSA

For most of us around the world, September has ended. I don’t know if anyone still does this, but PLEASE don’t message Billy Joe Armstrong asking him to wake up.

To you it might just be a fun little joke, but that song is inspired by a dark time in his life- namely his father passing away. September probably still triggers painful memories for him. He has even asked people to please stop messaging him that tired joke.

I really wish I could go back in time and post this yesterday. Please be considerate of Billy Joe’s feelings and keep the “joke” to yourself. Thank you.
