Kenny the ISFP-T

These will be my own interpretations of each of the main four. Since these are gonna take a while I may as well separate them into individual posts by character. Besides they’re easier on people’s dashes this way.

Kenny… I fully expect this to be a tough one.

Introverted – “ I often prefer doing things alone or with one or two people I feel comfortable with. I take time to reflect so that I have a clear idea of what I’ll be doing when I decide to act. Ideas are almost solid things for me.”

Well this one’s easy. Kenny’s very clearly an introvert. He talks to only a handful of people and only chooses a few moments to do so, other times simply taking in information or satiating his own boredom. But socializing? Not one of his hobbies. There’s even some times where he’s silent even when people directly talk to him.

His reactions are mostly internal, making external reactions seem very minimal.

Another thing I noticed, on the topic of that ^ Kenny doesn’t really talk to his parents. It’s more like they tell each other things and then that’s the end of it.

There are only a handful of scenes I’ve seen where Kenny talks to his parents and they’re all short and to the point. The only exception is when he’s dressed as Mysterion. That’s actually an interesting thing to note. I could totally see Kenny using this as a way to talk to his family completely unfiltered.

The fact that Kenny doesn’t talk to his family much actually makes the depiction of his friendships even more heartwarming, since with the four boys he definitely comes out of his shell, showing a little snippet of every side of him to them.

But even then, he’s still pretty reserved. There’s very few times when Kenny will do something like go on a long winded speech or go out of his way to start a conversation. That’s got nothing to do with a comfort zone. That’s just the way Kenny is. He’s not shy, especially with his filthy mouth. He just doesn’t talk much.

Sensing – “Paying attention to physical reality, what I see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. I’m concerned with what is actual, present, current, and real. I notice facts and I remember details that are important to me.“

When I took the test I got the result of INTJ, but that was a little while ago, and looking at Kenny with the info I’m reading about the MBTI, the way he makes decisions is definitely in a Sensing approach, not an Intuitive approach.

Kenny is very much about the reality of every situation. He observes things in a very “that’s the way it is” manner, constantly weighing his options over whether or not it’s worth taking action as opposed to letting it happen. Most of the time he doesn’t interfere with most things, probably from a fear of dying if things escalate too quickly, which, they tend to do. And that of course is because of his repeated experience of dying at the drop of a hat.

But that’s when things are already in motion. On the flip side, when nothing is happening and he is asked to do something, he often doesn’t object. Especially if it’s for the sake of an activity for his friends,

or for the sake of money.

But despite all the watching and thinking he does, he really doesn’t bother with philosophical or morally dubious questions. It’s an easy task for Kenny to accept things the way they are without much hesitation, and he can’t really be bothered with the question why.

That’s probably how he ended up being Cartman’s best friend. A loyal friend who doesn’t ask questions makes for a good partner in crime.

Feeling –  “I believe I can make the best decisions by weighing what people care about and the points-of-view of persons involved in a situation. I am concerned with values and what is the best for the people involved. I like to do whatever will establish or maintain harmony. In my relationships, I appear caring, warm, and tactful.”

Probably the biggest misconception in the fandom is how Kenny handles relationships. Sure he talks a lot about how he wants to fuck tons of bitches to his friends and is incredibly crude about it, but that’s not how he treats his girlfriends.

Despite his frustrations with them and the fact that he actually does want to get laid with them, he treats them very sweetly and never directs any anger towards the particular girl he’s with.

And even when it looks like he’s not going to get what he wants he still sticks around with them, even though he’s not happy with the outcome. He’ll go along with it for them.

The fact that he changed his entire lifestyle for Tammy with no hope of a reward was a very drastic decision, but considering it was his first real life girlfriend it was probably a nice change to his usual domestic setting.

At a first glance this may not seem like a drastic decision considering it’s just settling into a dreary life, but it really is one. Kenny was consistently exposed to completely different stimulants before he went along with Tammy’s weird ring philosophy. Huffing paint, drawing tits, playing bloody video games, looking at playboys… For him to live a very opposite life, even when Tammy wasn’t around to catch him doing something different is very much an extreme. And it’s very rare for him to do.

Usually consistent in his everyday but subtly delinquent life, Kenny’s decision making rarely leads him to jumping into action. When it does, it’s purely emotion driven.

And most of the time incredibly reckless.

Those decisions aren’t logic driven. There may be logic behind it, but that isn’t what makes them happen. He feels the emotion, for maybe a few seconds he may rationalizes, but then he just does it.

Perceiving - “I use my perceiving function (whether it is Sensing or Intuition) in my outer life. Others see me staying open to new experiences and information. I like to stay open to respond to whatever happens. I appear to be loose and casual. I like to keep plans to a minimum. I work in bursts of energy.”

Kenny doesn’t give a fuck.

I mean he does, but he certainly doesn’t think it’s worth worrying over. Kenny goes with the flow. STDs? Fuck it let’s roll the dice. Girlfriend not giving you a blowjob? Fuck it, watch some Grey’s Anatomy. Peruvian Flute Band stealing your thunder? Fuck it let’s dance.

He’s very fond of not being stressed and he definitely doesn’t like to brood. Slowing down to Kenny is the worst and he’d always rather being doing something than sitting down and moping about something not going his way.

Kenny just goes wherever life takes him, constantly being entertained by what he sees and just going with it as best he can.

Kenny isn’t negative or bored unless he’s absolutely forced to be. He’ll look for any kind of stimulant to avoid boredom and negativity. And considering he’s poor and lives in an abusive household, sometimes these wacky adventures his best friend and friend group drag him on aren’t around enough. Sometimes he needs a little substitute.

Kenny isn’t picky. He’s flexible and willing to try anything.

Overall Kenny is definitely a rare type of character. The quiet kid who will roll with anything you throw at him. An incredibly loyal friend who talks about doing the filthiest things but is also a sweetheart to women, and also a little bit of a druggie. But somehow, it all ties together. Character goals.

That’s my character analysis on Kenny. Next up is Cartman… oh boy, that’s gonna be fun.

NOTE: If you subscribe to the ‘Ryuzaki persona’ theory, please don’t be belligerent about my HC’s. Both the idea of L as autistic and as playing up a role are THEORIES not confirmed by Tsugumi Ohba and neither holds more evidence than the other.

Near and Matt were both born on the autistic spectrum, which explains a lot of their quirks. Mello was born neurotypical, but the trauma of his parents death, the pressure of Wammy’s House, and the things he had to do on the streets has caused him PTSD that has resulted in a few quirks that mirror the autistic traits of the three who had the most impact on his life.

L’s traits are commonly referenced to be autistic, however, in the one-shot “L: The Wammy’s House”, it is revealed that L likely suffered abuse from his parents (details further), which may imply that he suffers a high level of PTSD and was not taught adequately by his parents, resulting in his traits. It is also probable that, if L is indeed autistic, these traits were exacerbated by his poor treatment and Mr Wammy’s later enabling behaviour (detailed in the followup oneshot “L: One Day”). Due to the lack of clarity on this topic, I will not attempt to divide which traits are likely autistic and which are likely caused by PTSD.

I’m going to detail my thoughts on all of their traits, both canon and HC.

Air Sign Mercury- Abstract Mental Conception

Mercury in Gemini- Mental Curiosity- Those with Mercury in the sparkly trickster Gemini will find delight in wordplay, puzzles and nonsensical riddles. Usually quick minded, they can pick up mental concepts then abandon them when need be, not ones to mentally hold onto concepts one they have discovered all they need to know. This placement likely communicates with quick wit and humor, like a Shakespearean Jester, one that delivers small tidbits of information and has taken off before you have the chance to ask for clarity or question. These characters always have their Mental wheels spinning in some direction, whether that be up high, low, left or right, they will always require mental stimulation over boredom.

Mercury in Libra- Weighing Up All Areas- Those with this placement are innately idealist in their thinking, only wishing for the utmost fairness in each situation. Ever the diplomat, they will weigh up the pros and cons in situations before acting on it or speaking, which can lead to quite an indecisive nature. Charming communicators, they certainly have a master hold over the field of language, using it at their sublime discretion. This placement gives the talent of harmonizing, diffusing tense and chaotic situations with their mental clarity of peace. Their minds may feel most comfortable intellectualizing beautiful concepts, such as art, poetry and creative mental outlets, merging communicative Mercury with the airs and Graces of Balancing Act Libra.

Mercury in Aquarius- Objective and detached- Those with this placement will be struck with a stroke of ingenious and original thinking, often taking leaps and bounds into the intellectual world. They find their thoughts turn to themes of collectivism, science, and humanitarianism, usually objective and detached rather than personally invested, creating a great neutral thinking space. Ideas from this placement are often futuristic, causing more conservative thinkers to crinkle their brow in doubt, not being tapped into the same frequency as this innovation. This placement communicates with eccentricity, often challenging the norm of a group. This can lead to the view that Mercury Aquarius seems to magically know it all, leaving others in the intellectual dark, and this placement surely enjoys exposing the subjectivity and bias of others, marking it as a flaw on their part and enjoying the role of not being weighed down by subjective, personally invested ideas.

Only Lovers Left Alive: Adam [INTP]

Introverted Thinking (Ti): Adam is somewhat detached from his surroundings, and has an analytical mind. He makes decisions based on practicality rather than sentiment when it comes to survival (not drinking too much blood, keeping a safe supply in the house, checking it carefully). He likes to “tinker with things,” and reuse old stuff in his apartment rather than buy new stuff; he has rigged his 70’s television and an assortment of other gadgets to work as a video phone!

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): His apartment is a chaotic mess of half-finished projects, hobbies he has taken a momentary interest in, stacks of books, and other indications of his general restlessness and boredom without stimulation. Adam is something of a philosopher and dreamer, who muses on eternal thoughts whenever he is in a melancholy mood.

Introverted Sensing (Si): He is firmly against modernization and prefers the old to the new; rather than buy new technology, Adam re-invents and re-purposes the old. He often reminiscences about the past, and expects people to behave in similar patterns to what he has seen out of them before (hence, his dislike of Ava, who has a history of irrational and unpredictable behavior).

Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Melancholy is Adam’s middle name. With a little prompting, Eve can get him to open up about his feelings on a variety of topics, including his distaste for modern-day humans and their selfish natures. He cares what other people think of him, but is uncomfortable with too much affirmation. If the others agree about something, he will go along with it to keep the peace.

Mai: The Turkish Van is an excellent hunter. Although early bloodlines had a tendency to be aggressive, today the breed is generally very social, with a friendly disposition toward people, and the cats tend to develop a strong bond with their owners. They are very playful and lively

Jared: Coby The Cat (a British shorthair) has a majestic snowy fur and a pair of stunning blue eyes. Because of the black line around those gorgeous eyes, this cat looks like it has eyeliner on. Those two baby blue eyes look like two undiscovered galaxies. With those mystical eyes, it’s impossible not to love this adorable cat.

Jon: Egyptian Maus often possess very musical voices. They are known to chirp, chortle, and emit other distinctly unusual vocalizations when stimulated

Shane: the Scottish fold always looks pissed, but is actually a sweetheart. They are good “people” cats with a temperament that is generally sweet, bright and quiet with an easy-going nature.

PBG: The temperament of the Selkirk Rex reflects that of the breeds used in its development. They have a lot of the laid-back, reserved qualities of the British Shorthair, the cuddly nature of the Persian, and the playfulness of the Exotic Shorthair

Jirard: The Maine Coon is sweet and friendly, with the typically curious cat nature. He loves his family but isn’t demanding of attention. He’ll follow you around and show an interest in what you’re doing, and if you’d like to give him some lap time, well, he’s all in favor of that, too. This is one of those cats who gets along with everyone, including dogs and other cats.

Satch: Toygers are easy-going cats that get along with pretty much anybody. They do well with dogs and kids, and they love to play. They’re very intelligent cats so they need lots of intellectual stimulation to avoid boredom and possible acting out. When you’re at home, set aside time to play with your Toyger every day; he’ll very much appreciate that time, not just to get his energy out but because he’ll be with you.

Paul: California Spangled Cats are said to be affectionate, social, curious, and extremely devoted to their owners. They are big on eye contact and being in on the action, they love to perch on places that are at your shoulder or eye level so that they can see exactly what is going on. They are known for their well-honed intelligence, athletic abilities, high energy level, and accidental acrobatics.

Nick: The American Curl is a joyous cat. He loves to play, even well into old age, and it’s not unusual for him to enjoy a game of fetch. Like any cat, he is most often found perching in high places; that is, when he’s not perched on your lap or following you around.

Josh: The Manx is gentle and playful. It’s not unusual to find that he enjoys playing fetch or carrying his toys around. He’s also smart and dexterous, capable of using his paws to get into cabinets or to open doors. Fond of human company, he will carry on a conversation in a sweet trilling voice

Why isn't Hannibal a psychopath? Bryan and Mads and everyone I guess keeps saying he's not and I'm not sure why.

Two reasons.

One, the character is meant to be mythologized above anything quantifiable. Specifically, they like to equate him to the human embodiment of Satan, which is inspired by the novels in that he presents temptation to others, passes judgment, consumes and punishes, and does it all with a healthy dose of blasphemy to boot.

He’s supposed to be unique, not a “garden variety” anything, and labeling him a psychopath (or anything else, really) will tempt some audience members to reduce him to just those characteristics and miss how important understanding him as completely unique is to the overall narrative. This is important because it raises the stakes of the story to be about something bigger and more legendary than just capturing any psychopathic murderer, and they’re aiming for a mythological morality play, not for a realistic depiction of criminal (or any other) psychology.

There’s a reason why Will chose to describe the Ripper as a monster rather than a human being with a diagnosis. While we have a differentiation in the English language between a devil and the devil, we don’t have the same for psychopaths, and that’s what we would need to tell the story the way the storytellers want it told. Hannibal is not just a baddie. He is the Big Bad, and calling him a psychopath would be a little like calling him a baddie rather than the Big Bad—it’s not entirely untrue, but it’d definitely be inappropriate. Sometimes you’ll hear Bryan Fuller or Steve Lightfoot refer to Hannibal as a psychopath, but then they’ll often then attach a “not simply a psychopath” kind of statement to it, and I think this is largely why.

Additionally, the base premise of the story is that Hannibal and Will are each completely unique, so that the only person in the universe who could truly understand and appreciate each is the other. This is fundamental to understanding everything in the show, and so it’s necessary to understand that whatever their particular issues, “we don’t yet have a name” for what these two sweethearts are.

Two, serial murderers are a dime a dozen in Hannibal’s universe, even if significantly rarer in our own, but even in Hannibal’s universe, most of the killers are not conventionally psychopathic: their murders are largely (though not exclusively) those of “sensitive psychopaths,” as Jack called them—which tends to cherry-pick the psychopathy checklist: they don’t actually fit the criteria well enough to be considered actual psychopaths.

This is also true of Hannibal. As Miriam Lass puts it, he has “some of the characteristics,” but not enough of them to actually be what they call a sociopath or psychopath.

Keep in mind that there is no actual diagnosis for psychopathy, and the issue of psychopathy is one that’s fraught with much legal and (often pseudo-) scientific wrangling. But, generally speaking, no one has yet replaced Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist with something better. This ascribes point values to various items, 0-2, and a score totaling 30+ means an individual is probably a psychopath (someone told me 25+ in the UK, but I don’t know if that’s true—but it does show that a difference in legal definition can exist, illustrating just how “soft” a science this all is).

  • glibness/superficial charm
  • grandiose sense of self worth
  • need for stimulation/prone to boredom
  • pathological lying
  • conning/manipulative
  • lack of remorse or guilt
  • shallow emotional response
  • callous/lack of empathy
  • parasitic lifestyle
  • poor behavioral controls
  • promiscuous sexual behavior
  • early behavioral problems
  • lack of realistic long term goals
  • impulsivity
  • irresponsibility
  • failure to accept responsibility for their own actions
  • many short term relationships
  • juvenile delinquency
  • revocation of conditional release
  • criminal versatility

As I total these, even if I give a 2 for any time I think Hannibal only deserves a 1, the highest I can get him to score is 24, and I’m being REALLY UNFAIR just to get him that high. I think, if we score him at a 1 for anything debatable, where it depends on circumstance or how you look at it, 0 for not at all, and 2 for undeniable, then he probably scores ~18. (The highest I could get Will to was about 19, again being REALLY UNFAIR, but he might score as high as ~11, more realistically.)

It should be noted, as a point of comparison, that most people score 5 or below, so Hannibal (and even Will) is way more psychopathic than most…yet not actually high enough to be considered a psychopath. This would make Miriam Lass’s assessment of the Chesapeake Ripper very accurate.

There are other checklists and descriptions of psychopaths besides Hare’s version, but in my observation, Hannibal does about the same on all of them: he fits some categories quite well, and others not at all. There is no official diagnosis, remember, because the whole thing, like many things in the field of mental illness, is pretty pseudo-science to begin with.

In addition to all this, I think Mads specifically has a tendency to not just mythologize the character, but also to emphasize how emotional he is. Hannibal is not experiencing shallow emotional response or a lack of empathy, he just controls himself really, really well while he actually feels very deeply. I’ve seen people argue that this is exactly what should make Hannibal a psychopath (although that doesn’t really fit the checklist above), but that’s still debatable: studies have shown that while psychopaths may have an “empathy on/off switch,” people believe that this may be true of everyone, the difference being that the psychopath’s default position is “off,” and an ordinary person’s default position is “on.” I think, if presented with the question, that Mads would pretty unequivocally state that Hannibal’s default is most definitely set to “on.” Finally, I’ve also seen Mads appear to draw from the older definition of sociopathy or secondary psychopathy—wherein psychopaths are made that way by childhood trauma—and dismiss that completely. I don’t know if Mads knows all that much about the issue, really—he may, he may not…it’s hard to say. But those seem to be the factors that influence his opinion: mythologizing the character, deep emotional and empathetic capacity, and an absence of childhood trauma, at least as a cause.

And all of the above probably holds for Bryan Fuller.

So I saw your Pro-Zoo post, and it really opened my eyes. I used to be super anti-Zoo but now Im starting to rethink my decision, but it made me wonder about how you feel about Sea World?, like vs. a normal aquarium. Sorry if youve answered this a lot. Im just really interested in your opinion.

Hey, thanks so much! That’s like, the biggest compliment you could possibly give me! Even if you decide you’re still not a fan of zoos, it makes me super happy to know you cared enough to look into the other side of the argument. That’s so awesome.

I talk about this a little bit here, but I’ve also got a few more thoughts to share.

Basically, I have a hard time seeing the distinction between zoos and Sea World. I know a lot of people do see a very big difference, and as best as I can figure, that difference comes down to profits and entertainment. A lot of people think it’s degrading to have the whales performing in shows for a bunch of sweaty tourists. I get that, I do, but I think it’s anthropomorphic. Orcas do not feel degraded when they perform in shows. In my experience as a zookeeper, I can tell you that the animals I worked with all responded with enthusiasm to any training sessions or public demonstrations. This is not because we starved the animal and only fed it when it did tricks. Sea World and AZA accredited zoos use positive reinforcement training, which means the animals is never punished for non-compliance, and the animal always has the power to walk away from a training session if it isn’t in the mood. I worked with large mammals (elephants, rhinos), so I know first hand that you can’t make an animal as big as an orca do anything it doesn’t want to do. I also know that the large mammals I worked with were at their most engaged and interested during training sessions and public demonstrations, because that was when they were receiving the most physical and mental stimulation. Boredom is about the worst thing that can happen to an animal in captivity. Training and demonstrations are all forms of enrichment that are vital for animals in zoos and aquariums. Sea World, because it is a for-profit company, can afford to employ a ton of trainers who will keep these animals interested and engaged all day long. Sea World whales are probably very rarely bored.

I guess it’s really hard for me to see a difference between Sea World and a normal aquarium. Both are places where people come to learn about marine life. Sea World has several whale “shows”, but I can’t think of an aquarium I’ve been to in the last ten years that hasn’t had a public training demonstration or public animal feeding several times a day. And if Sea World is guilty of exploiting it’s animals to make a buck, then so are all the zoos and aquariums that also do training demos or Boo at the Zoo or anything else in a similar vein.

Anyway…that’s my rant over. Again, I’m so glad you’re thinking about this stuff at all, and wherever you decide you stand on these issues, I hope you make a positive difference in the lives of animals. Thanks again!

A Sense of Dysphoria Part 2

Summary: Dysphoria is the feeling often felt in the aftermath of a distressing situation and one is often left feeling jumpy and anxious. Riley Matthews feels ‘a sense of dysphoria’ in the midst of the problems that life throws at her. Which guiding hand will have her best interest at heart? (lots of angst and a very sad Riley)

Word Count: 1890

Riley plumped herself down on Smackle’s lush carpet.  Her body was trembling from the bitter rain of New York.  She would’ve used the umbrella system that her and Maya had implanted in many subway stations near where they lived, but she was too scared to use the subway by herself and Isadora’s home seemed close enough in walking distance.  It turns out, nothing was as close as it seemed in the rain.  Riley ran her numb fingers through her tangled, wet hair as Smackle brought her a hot beverage and a very fluffy towel.

“It’s custom to give hot beverages to someone who is sad,” Smackle told her once she handed the warm cup to Riley.  Her hands sought the warmth of the cup and she brought it to her lips.

“You think I’m sad?” Riley asked her unsurely.

“Of course.  I may not identify with emotions as easily as you do but I believe that what you’re feeling is the emotion that is commonly known as ‘sad’.”

“Oh,” Riley said quietly.

“What is the matter?  Do you not find my justification to be correct?”

“No, it’s just that…whatever I’m feeling feels more…I don’t know….complex,” Riley explained slowly.

“Perhaps if you give me the specific symptoms of your case then I can do a refined search on my computer.”

“Ok,” Riley obliged.  She set down her mug on a coaster nearby and wrapped her towel more tightly around her.

“I’m always empty, like I have nothing to look forward to you.  Sometimes I get angry at people easily and sometimes I feel really tired or sometimes I feel very anxious.  It’s a huge confusing mess of feelings!”

“Alright.  According to the variety of websites below, many would like to believe that what you’re feeling is dysphoria,” Smackle said, squinting at the screen.

Dysphoria.  One word that explains what she’s been feeling and keeping to herself.

“What does it mean?” Riley questioned.

“According to, dysphoria is often used to describe depression in psychological disorders.  It is a general state of sadness, lack of energy, anxiety, vague irritation, or restlessness.  It is the opposite of euphoria and is different from usual sadness because it often includes jumpiness and some anger.  You may have felt it in response to a stimulant, extreme boredom, depression, or a distressing situation,” Smackle read.

Riley gulped but Smackle smiled.  “I fixed you!  Eureka!”

“How is finding my type of pain fixing me?” Riley questioned, a little frustrated.  She wishes that a definition of a specific emotion could fix all of her problems:  Help her be closer with her parents.  Help Lucas choose a girl.  Help her to stop being insecure.

“I have discovered your emotion.  How does this not solve the equation at hand?”

“People aren’t equations and they can’t be solved by finding a definition of their emotions.  I only wish it were that easy,” She explained.

“Oh.  So you are not fixed?”

“No,” Riley said softly.

“Can I help?”

“You already have.”

Smackle glanced at the clock.  “Time to go to bed, or nighty night as some say.”

“It’s only 8:30!” Riley laughed for the first time in a while.

“This genius needs her sleep!  What would you normally do if this were a sleepover with you and Maya?”

Riley thought for a second.  Had Smackle never been to a sleepover?  She added a mental note to invite her to the next one her and Maya had.  If they had another one soon, that is.  “Well we usually watch our favorite show, Red Planet Diaries and we paint nails, do each others hair and makeup, eat snacks, talk in the bay window, and if we’re lucky we’ll play the Friend’s Game.”

“That sounds tiring.  Would it be more sufficient for you to stay up and participate in those activities or would you wish to sleep?”

Riley thought about it.  She knew Smackle probably wouldn’t enjoy those activities as much as she would and Isadora seemed like she wanted to go to bed, so she chose the latter.  “I’m fine.  We can go to sleep.”

Smackle nodded and took off her glasses and set them on the nightstand beside her.  “I found an inflatable air mattress for you to sleep in,” Smackle had told her, pointing next to her bed.  Riley settled into her bed while Smackle and her settled into an uncomfortable silence, but it wasn’t long until Isadora broke it.

“Aren’t you going to say goodnight?” Smackle asked.

Riley giggled.  “Yes.  Goodnight little genius.”

Over the span of a half an hour, Riley could hear Smackle’s breathing deepen and she guessed that the black haired girl had fallen asleep.  Meanwhile, the brunette had not.  More like she couldn’t.  She was used to crying herself to sleep, especially that one time that her friends had abandoned her and Maya in the well known ‘hole’ in high school.  She had spent many a nights crying about her parents not seeming like they cared about her anymore, about the messy situation they were in, how the little voice in her head was telling her horrible things about herself.  Time ticked by.  9:54.  11:27.  Riley thought until she had nothing left to think.  She was still awake, staring at the blank ceiling above her.  12:46.  1:35.  She couldn’t stand it any longer!  Riley sat up on the comfy air mattress and tip-toed as quietly as possible towards her backpack.  Let’s see… she had brought her clothes, her hygiene products, a pillow and a blanket, and a notebook.  Huh…she didn’t remember packing the notebook along.  She flipped amongst it’s pages until a single red letter fell out.  She opened the inside.

Dear Riley,

I forgive you for being insecure.  I forgive you for being a super klutz.  I forgive you for not being able to change your feelings for Lucas.  I forgive you for lying about your feelings.  I forgive you for not realizing that your best friend stepped back for you.  I forgive you for being goofy.  I forgive you for being different.  I forgive you for being who you are.

From, Riley.

Riley dropped it as if it were a sizzling iron.  She remembered writing this.  It was after Texas, after their project on forgiveness, and after she was cyber bullied.  It was a day where she had seen Maya talking flirtily to Lucas.  It was a day where Farkle reminded her that friends don’t lie to each other.  It was a day where her parents once again couldn’t see through her fake smiles.   It was a day where her brother had life more figured out where she did.  It was another day where she cried herself to sleep.

A sudden thought popped in her head and she searched furiously for a writing utensil.  Once she discovered one (on Smackle’s desk) she began scribbling furiously.  Riley owed it to herself to write forgiveness letters to everyone she held anger, whether she handed them out or not.  Maybe it would help get some of her anger out.

Dear Maya,

I forgive you for not seeing me upset.  I forgive you for having a crush on someone I like, because you can’t control your feelings.  I forgive you for not telling me how you feel.  I forgive you for having the Riley Committee.

From, Riley.

Dear Lucas,

I forgive you for not choosing between us.  I forgive you for not trusting me with your secret.  I forgive you for abandoning me and Maya during the first week of high school.  I forgive you for not believing in me for cheerleading even though I believed you could ride that bull.  I forgive you for yelling at me for saying you’d get killed on the football team.

From, Riley.

Dear Farkle,

I forgive you for outing my feelings even though I asked you not to.  I forgive you for telling me that I shouldn’t be who I am by believing in people.  I forgive you ditching me in high school.

From, Riley.

Dear Mom and Dad,

I forgive you for not believing in me.  I forgive you for not being proud of me.  I forgive you for not being supportive.

From, Riley.

Riley let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding in.  She ripped out each individual page, folded them, and stuffed each letter (along with the notebook) into her backpack.  She snuggled back into her air mattress and sighed.  The exhaustion finally began to creep on her and she slowly fell into a deep slumber.

~Line Break~

Riley awoke with a start and Smackle was standing over her.

“What are you doing?” Riley asked, rubbing the sleep out of her eyes.

“It is 8:00,” Smackle informed her.

“What’s 8:00?”

“Nothing is significant about this time of day.  I just do not know what time of day your father and mother would prefer you to be home.”

Riley winced.  “You see…I didn’t even tell them I was over here.”

“I assumed that much, according to the state you were in when you got here.”

“Well since I’m already up and at'em, I’ll just be going!” Riley said perkily.

“Alright then,” Smackle said, giving her a forced hug.  “I’m glad you enjoyed your stay.”

“Oh, I did!” Riley called back.

Riley ran back to her apartment.  It was a Saturday; her parents wouldn’t be up, unless her mother went to work early, which was unlikely since today was a bakery day.  The bakery didn’t even open until 9:00.  She arrived at her apartment door and saw her parents sitting on the couch, talking.  They jumped up when she shut the door.

“Where did you go?”

“I’m surprised you noticed I was gone at all,” Riley muttered under her breath.

“Young lady, where have you been?” Cory demanded again.  Riley was tired.  She was tired of being nice all the time.  She was tired of hiding her feelings.

“Somewhere where someone will appreciate me,” Riley told them straight-faced.

“We appreciate you!” Topanga said flabbergasted.

“No you don’t!  Parents who appreciate their children know when they’re hurting and they don’t comfort their daughter’s best friend over them.  They support your decisions and they tell you that they’re proud of you.  You don’t support me.  You didn’t know I was hurting.  You’ve told me that you’ve desperately wanted to be proud of me.  How do I know I am appreciated here?”

“Go to your room, Riley,” Topanga said calmly.  Riley stormed off towards her room.

“Topanga, why did you send our daughter off to her room?  We’re clearly in the wrong here.”

“Cory, it’s because we are in the wrong that I sent her to her room.  We need to have a serious discussion with her about what’s been going on.  We’ve been neglecting her lately.”

“Riley, we want to talk to you!” the two parents called as they entered her bedroom.  Her door was closed shut.

“Honey…” Topanga knocked.  “We just want to talk.”

Riley wouldn’t answer.

Cory opened up the door to see his daughter’s bay window door open.

“Topanga, she’s gone!”

Riley ran, the tears streaming down her face.  She wasn’t running away from her problems.  She was running to someone who would listen.  Someone who wouldn’t break her already shattered heart.
