still one of my favorite cartoons

It’s time for another Hiveswap development team interview!

Hey there, Hiveswap and Homestuck fans! Ash here once again, and as promised, it’s time for another interview with the talented folks on Hiveswap’s development team! And don’t worry – if you missed the first interview, with our environment art director Rah, you can find it right here!

Who’s in the hot seat today? Why, it’s Adrienne, our lead animator! She can tell you far more about her work on the project than I ever could, so without further ado, I’m going to hand things off to her – after reminding you all to take good, long looks at the wonderful examples of her work peppered throughout this interview. Take it away, Adrienne!

Introduce yourself to the fans! What is your specific role on the Hiveswap team?

Hiya! My name’s Adrienne and I’m the lead animator for Hiveswap. I work together with Angela, the animation director, on roughs, cleanup, background and cutscene animation – anything that moves!

When and how did you get your start on the Hiveswap project?

I was hired full-time in January 2016, but I started doing some sprite conceptualization in late 2015 in tandem with [S]:Collide work (I animated sprites for the main big bads and did thumbnails for some of the sequences).

Tell us a little bit about your career background! How did you get your start in animation? Do you have any advice for others looking to enter this field?

Homestuck is basically my career background, ahaha.

I drew a lot of fan art for Homestuck after I finished catching up in late 2012. I got some attention from my work and I was asked to do comic pages for Paradox Space. Then I did work for the Homestuck calendar. Then I just became more involved in the comic after that by doing thumbnails, sprite animation, comic pages, snapchats… and now I’m working on the game… it’s been a wild ride from fan to full-time fan.

But as for how I got started in animation, a lot of it was influenced by anime and then DeviantArt while I was growing up. I grew up with Naruto and loved Norio Matsumoto’s work in it (he did the key animation for the best episodes!). And on DeviantArt, I liked following OCTs (Original Character Tournaments) and was particularly inspired by Unknown-Person’s work.

My general advice would be to value learning and exploration, and have less expectations of what life should hand you – it makes a lot of circumstances feel like a pleasant surprise and a good opportunity to learn something new. That’s how I felt when I stumbled into this field anyway, haha.

We’re making a video game, so of course the question must be asked: what’s your favorite game of all time, and what games are you playing currently (if any)?

Agh, what a difficult question. My most-played genre is colorful multiplayer shooters like Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, and Splatoon.

I finished Nier: Automata recently and now I’m working through Persona 5. But when I’m not working through that game, I play Breath of the Wild (most of my time is spent riding my horse around Hyrule – it’s very calming).

Are there any games that you currently use or have used as inspiration for your own animation work here on Hiveswap, or just in general?

I generally use Homestuck flash animations as an inspiration for Hiveswap sprite animations.

When I’m working on cutscenes, I look to Professor Layton stuff. I love how they integrated cutscenes with gameplay in that series.

As an animator, you must have some favorite cartoons and/or anime – tell us about them!

My recent favorite is Mob Psycho 100. The raw and rough quality of the animation for that one is my jam and the main cast is really inspiring. Avatar: The Last Airbender is still my top favorite for its epic storytelling and world-building. Naruto always has a special place in my heart since it’s one of the earliest things that inspired me to study animation.

Other big influential works for me were Princess Mononoke and How to Train Your Dragon.

What’s your workstation like? Do you like to listen to any particular kinds of music while you work? If so, tell us about it!

Here’s a picture of my workstation! If you squint at the bottom screen closely, you can see me taking the picture. But anyway… yeah. I am a little embarrassed for people to know how saturated my workstation is with inspirational quotes (there are papers of handwritten motivation on the walls behind me), but that’s just how I deal when the anxiety gets a little rough.

When I want to focus (usually for rough animation and concept art), I pull up an electronic or classical playlist on YouTube (and recently Spotify) or have no music playing at all. But for everything else (cleanup, in-betweens, etc.), I dig into different genres once in awhile but Imagine Dragons and Americana/folk stuff are my go-to. Acoustics sound really nice in these speakers.

Favorite Homestuck character?

Egh, this is impossible… I’m gonna say it’s between Rose, Jade, Roxy, Kanaya, Terezi, and Vriska… um…

Favorite Homestuck ship?

Rose/Kanaya has never once failed me! c: (I think John/Terezi is really funny too.)

Favorite Homestuck flash?

Urgh… I don’t know, there’s so many that I love. In terms of like… cool and creative setup, [S] Cascade probably? [S] GAME OVER is cool too, because everyone died and the stakes just got so much higher. Oh! I just remembered [S] Make her pay as well!

This question is impossible.

(In the above animation timeline, the first frame is held for 4/24 of a second, the second frame for 2/24 of a second, the third for 2/24, and so on.)

Do you have a personal message you’d like to relay to all the Homestuck and Hiveswap fans out there?

Thank you for all your support, and for your patience in making it through the Giga/Mega/Omegapauses intact!

Where can people find more of your work? Link us to your own little corner(s) of the Internet!

If you want to see more of my stuff, my Tumblr is the place to be!

Thank you, Adrienne! Well, folks, I hope you’ve enjoyed this second Hiveswap development team interview – and don’t worry, there are still plenty more to come!

Now that we’ve gotten things rolling, from here on out we’ll be bringing you a new interview every Wednesday, so be sure to check back every week for a new behind-the-scenes look at the development of Hiveswap and the talented people behind it!

See you next time!

When I was doing reseach on the Ink & Paint Club picture I did, I found lots of this style of 1940’s art as well. I seem to be on a vintage and retro art kick as of late so I wanted to give it a try too. What started off as one image turned in to the main cast of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Still one of my favorite films.

Once again, designs like this can be found over at my Red Bubble shop and Society6 too.

My father built Voltron, but he knew Zarkon was a better leader in battle, so he became Voltron’s right hand. Lance, when you accepted Keith as the new leader of Voltron, it proved that you value a strong team over your own need for glory, just like my father.

“I was wrong, Bunny. Not all dogs are bad.”

One of my favorite episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog was The Mask. You know the one where Courage helps Kitty rescue her “friend” Bunny from some abusive mob dog? I used to love the scene at the end where they reunite on the train. I’ve been feeling very inspired by Kitty and Bunny lately. I guess after ten plus years my brain still wonders what happened to them after they rode into the sunset.

So, my character design teacher told us to draw characters from one of our favorite shows in the old cartoon style and this is the result :)
(am still horsing around with PB’s design! I can’t let that dog out…lol)

Soooo excited for tomorrow!!!! ❤❤❤ #bojackseason4bitches!

The kitchen countertops matched Christmases where Y/n was from, white. How they’d managed to make such a mess still mystified Y/n. Gen had suggested baking Christmas cookies as a good idea for Y/n and the boys to do together, but Y/n doubted she would have suggested it if she knew how it was going to end.

“Your Mom is going to kill me,” Y/n hissed as she desperately tried to scope up some of the flour coating the workspace. The boys continued to laugh, not nearly as concerned as their sister was. “I’m glad you’re enjoying this. She’s not gonna leave us alone again if this is what happens! I’m pretty sure there is more flour on this countertop then there is in the actual cookies.”

“Can we put the icing on them now?” Tom asked for what felt like the tenth million time.

“No buddy, we have to wait till they cool remember? Otherwise it’ll melt and just make a mess. When the timer goes off then we can decorate the cookies.”

“I want to decorate a Christmas tree one first, I’m gonna make it green,” Shep said, clapping his hands together and setting a cloud of white dust into the air.

“I wanna make the Santa one!” Y/n nodded at Tom’s request, just as the timer went off.

“Alright boys, looks like it’s decorating time.” She grabbed a Santa cookie and a tree cookie off the rack, placing them in front of the boys. “Go crazy!”

“Go crazy?” Gen chuckled as she entered the room. “That never ends well.”

Y/n threw her hands up, “Well, I figured they can’t make much more of a mess then they already have. I promise to clean this all up when they’re done.”

“Don’t worry about it. This is the usual. They love to help in the kitchen, but they haven’t really mastered the cleaning up after themselves yet. I’ll start, you guys enjoy making your cookies,” she said as she looked over Tom’s shoulder. “Looking good guys!”

I meant to talk about this film last month, but I finally got around to recording a video about it. The Powerpuff Girls Movie came out 15 years ago, and it’s still one of my favorite animated movies.

REBLOGS greatly appreciated!

Aaaayyyy so I found a post where someone shared their top 20 favorites and I decided I wanted to make my own to xD I made this template myself and I have a blank one (tho without text at all, I can input the “Top 20 Favorite Shows” if anyone wants me to). If you wanna do your own with my template, just shoot me an ask or PM!

Hit the read more if you really want to know my opinions on each. I suck at summarizing so it is a bit of a read, sorry about that heh

Since I goofed this week and a Monday MSTie comic is almost always expected, here’s something a tad different. I threw this at Twitter last night, as part of the fandom push to encourage Netflix to give us a Season 12 of MST3K. Joel sounds hopeful, but we’re still waiting for official, final word. Some encouragement can’t hurt, right?

Listen to cartoon!Jonah, @netflix–All you gotta do is PUSH THE BUTTON.

My favorite part of this is Crow: “You’re on a SHIRT, Jonah!”

(…I have that shirt. And you better believe I own one of those prized tour spring snakes.)

It’s Time to Talk Sam Manson

If it’s not already obvious from the fact that I run the @sam-manson-defense-squad, I love Sam. Sadly, she seems to have gotten a nasty reputation among fans, which is a right shame because there’s a lot that can be done with her character. I do understand that her execution in the show was flawed, but if people can overlook bad writing for other characters, I think we should be able to do the same for Sam. Since the first two episodes do a pretty good job establishing what she’s like, she seemed like a great character to start off with.

As a general rule, these character-specific posts will be focusing on the positives (meaning what I think makes them a good character and how they work as part of the show). I’m trying to enjoy something I love, and I don’t wanna spread negativity.

Anywho, let’s get started. (warning: will likely be image-heavy)

youtube recommendations for age regressors!

theres probably already one of these but i still wanted to make this! my favorites are italicized.

CookieSwirlC - toy unboxings!! super fun but theres a lot of stimuli and she can often talk fast and pitch up her voice making it very loud! be careful.

pstoyreviews - more toy unboxings! has two people and is a lot calmer but just as friendly and inviting! one of the people is an adult man though so be safe if that makes you uncomfortable

DisneyShorts - an official Disney channel with both Mickey Mouse cartoons and the new series + a few others! only warnings are for things like cartoon violence and romantic pda

Mother Goose Club - nursery rhymes! i cant think of any warnings for the videos but scopophobia warning for the header and icon!

SimpleKidsCrafts - easy, fun crafts made from stuff you can find around the house or buy for cheap! cant think of any warnings

Dollastic - more toys!! some anime merch as well though it isnt the main focus. havent watched her long enough to think of any specific warnings!

AwesomeRainbowToys - a toy channel aimed at younger audiences! it has a very small amount of talking but the person running it is an adult man.

WhatsUpMoms - this probably sounds really odd but its honestly great for kiddie diys! and the parental presence is comforting to me. Avoid the parodies as they can be iffy but the rest should be fine. Link leads to the “Play” playlist since thats what i mostly watch it for.

Houston Zoo - educational animal videos! i wasnt actually gonna add this but its been recommended on so many kids sites i thought i should, should be 100% safe but theres basically every kinda animal so id b careful if ur afraid of anything u might see at a zoo!! its kinda like a mobile trip to the zoo.

HooplaKidz How To - more diys!! lots of these are good for stimmy stuff too. no warnings i can think of. HooplaKidz has a lot of other channels too but this is the only one i watch.

Cool School - various videos but my favorite is story time where you’re read fun kid stories!! does get loud sometimes but i cant think of any other warnings.

voltron bob’s burger au i’ve been talking about with @vodka-aunt-coran

  • allura is bob
    • this is because she’s probably better at cooking than shiro (remember that one official poster they released a while back where they all made cookies and were wearing hunk’s headband? her cookies were much better than shiro’s)
    • this is also because because she’s not exactly the maternal type but all the kids still love her and have more fun with her
    • allura’s burgers
  • shiro is linda
    • he says inappropriate things at the wrong time (”my wound is great! getting bigger all the time”), makes jokes that no one laughs at, and while he deals with the kids more one-on-one, allura is still the favorite “parent”…tell me how this man isn’t linda (besides how he doesn’t sing)
  • keith is tina
    • originally i was going to make lance tina but nah
    • they’re both awkward
    • i hc them both as autistic
    • while tina has a thing about horses and butts, keith has a thing about cryptids…and also butts, probably
  • hunk is gene
    • and no this isn’t because they’re both the food guys and tbh bob’s burgers handles gene being fat better than voltron does with hunk. who knew an adult swim show would be less fatphobic than a “”progressive””” children’s cartoon :))))))
    • this is actually because they’re both my favorites
    • also because??? they’re both so positive. the life of the party. everyone loves them.
    • also i can see older gene’s humor being closer to hunk’s
  • pidge is louise
    • they’re both crafty lil gremlin girls
    • need i say more
  • lance is jimmy jr
    • reasons:
      • the dancing
      • the butt
      • keith pining after him
  • coran is teddy
    • aka allura’s friend that comes in everyday and eats a burger and sometimes gets involved in her and her “family’s” personal life
    • “uncle teddy” = “uncle coran”
About Samurai Jack’s ending

Though I never watched the entire show, Samurai Jack was part of my childhood. I always knew that show had a different vibe than the others cartoons at the time. I loved (and I still love) the art style of that show, so simplistic yet beautiful.

The first four episodes of the new season were everything I was expecting from the reboot. Violence, blood, incredible art again, nice background music, blood, a new unexplored dark tone overall and most importantly, a more mature Jack we haven’t seen before. And also blood.

What a good choice they made with the whole Jack’s depression thing at the beginning! My favorite moment on this season HAS to be the moment he killed one of Aku’s daughters, geez (also I loved inner demon Jack, he was fun).

However, and knowing I’m not a writer or anything like that, I got to say… what a dissapointing ending. This wasn’t the ending many people hoped for this show, including me. It was rushed… and no, it was not because of the whole romance thing (Which was poorly written in terms of dialogue, I got to admit. I mean, I did like the idea, but I didn’t believe their relationship overall).

The problem with this show’s ending is… the fact that it didn’t feel like a resolution to the show, but a resolution for season 5 instead.

Many people know this show because of two main things: its action sequences, which are fantastic; and their two main characters: Jack and Aku. That’s it. The endless battle between the good guy vs the bad one, hero vs villain, white vs black, the samurai vs the demon, It’s simple.

Nevertheless, what do we get at the end? A crappy battle between secondary characters most people don’t really care about (and the scotsman who got like ten seconds of screentime) versus and over-the-top Aku who didn’t feel like a threat this whole season. You heard me out, they couldn’t make the most important villain on the show an actual threat for the main characters.

And even if Jack and Aku would have fought each other, it just… I didn’t feel right. Both Jack and Aku felt “off” after episode 5. Jack lost his essence as a hero and became Mulan from “Mulan II” instead of Mulan from “Mulan I”, and Aku lost his imponent essence as a villain and became “Mojo Jojo” instead of “Him”. They both lost what made them special, Jack’s desire for saving his parents because is the right thing (not that love crap) and Aku’s love for eternal domination (not that “New Aku” shit).

It’s sad, actually. It is sad this show didn’t end in a high note. How dissapointing… At least Scaramouche was a great character. R.I.P. Scaramouche, “that’s all, babes”.

One thing I love about being in this fandom, is the abundance of great fanart. There’s so many amazing artists that I think a few get overshadowed and underappreciated.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite underappreciated artists who deserve more love.

@horsemenhdfj He isn’t very active anymore, but I absolutely adore his style. The way he draws facial expressions, not to mention the clothing designs. it’s very unique and original.

@littlefroid draws in this really lovely cartoon style that’s just so charming, I really like the way they draw Scarecrow in particular.

@baffled-pie Somewhat new to the fandom, baffled-pie has a really good grasp on the BTAS art style and uses it to create such wonderful fanart

@thepigeonqueen Pigeon is one of the sweetest people on this website, I just adore her style so much. She runs a Crane askblog on the side too!

@inkstainsandbattythings One of my favorite artists on here, personally I don’t think she gets enough notes. Her style is so amazing and she’s always improving. I swear, some of her stuff looks it could be from a real cartoon.

@erribeka A painterly style and wonderfully exaggerated expressions makes for some great artwork. Check out her stuff, you won’t be disappointed

@sofitai  Amazing semi-realistic style that I marvel over with each new drawing

@jo-z Draws some really unique versions of the rogues that are truly lovable, also her OC “Arkham Abby” is still one of my favorites.

@dorinahv2 I’ve commissioned her before and would do it again. I love her watercolor art style, it’s so refreshing.

@professor-crane Mainly an rp blog, but their artwork is worth putting on this list. I loved their recent drawing of Injustice 2 Scarecrow.

@dawndrawsstuff Draws some really cute chibi stuff that just makes you melt. Please give their artwork some love~

@clowncrime  Super funny okay, they have some great artwork and hilarious batman comics that are worth the read.

@left2fail I love the way she shade and colors, her artwork is so bright and vivid. Also, she’s really good with expressions.

@rihkama Draws the most hilarious comics, and I really like her realistic drawing approach to the batman rogues.

@yiynova Some of my favorite Scarecrow artwork comes from yiynova, I love it so much that I’m getting a commission. You’re missing out if you don’t follow them.

@therealfishbunny Another absolutely amazing artist that took the BTAS art style and turned it into something even better. Such expressive sketches too!

@michi0no I don’t know how to describe their style other than adorable. I love the way the draw Jonathan and Jervis. Their artwork feels lose and painterly, especially their lineart. It’s hard to translate into words, but take my word for it!

@fionaspooks Another artist who doesn’t get enough notes, I really like her long haired scarecrow and she’s got a fantastic eye for costume design!

I know I’m probably forgetting people, but this list is getting really long. Please check out some of these lovely artists. I’ve been inspired by their work and I hope you will be too 🎃 💛

Oh, Where Is My Hairbrush

Pairing: Sam x Reader
Words:  983
Requested by @smandrews3:  Okay idk if you’re taking requests (and if your not thats totally cool) but I was wondering if you would do something with the reader getting veggie tale songs stuck in her head (like the water buffalo song or I love my lips or something like that) and one of the boys catches her singing it? Love your work btw ❤️❤️

A/N: Please do not post my writing on any other site.

You got out of the shower, put your hair up in a towel, and got dressed. As you walked into your room, you took your hair down and started towel drying it. You looked around to find your hairbrush and immediately started seeing, “Oh, where is my hairbrush? Oh, where is my hairbrush? Oh, where; oh, where; oh, where; oh, where; oh, where … is my hairbrush?” you giggled to yourself about singing the Veggie Tale song. You had loved the Christian cartoon videos as a kid and sometimes the songs still came into your head. “Oh, Where Is My Hairbrush” had always been one of your favorites.

Because you were now singing Veggie Tale songs, you decided to reminisce about ones you remembered from your childhood.

Once you located your hairbrush and sat on the bed brushing your hair, you started singing through “I Love My Lips.”

"One day while talking with Dr. Archibald, Larry confronts one
of his deepest fears …“ "If my lips ever left my mouth, packed a bag and headed south, that’d be too bad, I’d be so sad.”

As you continued on with the silly song, you heard someone clear their throat behind you. You jumped and cringed when you saw Sam standing there, “What are you singing?” he asked.

           “Veggie Tales,” you admitted.

Happy birthday Kenny McCormick! For as long as I can remember, you’ve been my favorite South Park character, and my number one favorite cartoon character of all time. Despite your absence in season 20, we still love you, you cheeky little bastard. Last year, I uploaded everything I own of Kenny McCormick, and since then, I’ve gotten way more Kenny merch, including a picture I won in an eBay auction autographed by the man himself, Trey Parker! @southparkdigital
