Derek was dead and Stiles had no idea why he was even contemplating calling him. Scott had said he had seen Derek’s body, had seen him fall and then not move but Stiles tried not to think about it too hard.

He was busy enough trying to forget that Boyd had tried to drown himself and that Scott had been in the process of setting himself on fire.

Stiles hovered over the call button, indecision taking hold of him again. He realized that for all that they had been through he had never actually called Derek. They texted occasionally, when something big was going down, but he had never called and now didn’t know what to expect. Stiles couldn’t decide what would be worse: being directed to a voicemail and possibly having to hear Derek’s voice or the call just going unanswered.

Both possible outcomes would just drive the point home that Derek was dead.

But Stiles needed to talk to someone and if he was just talking to the void, even better. He pressed call.

And nearly dropped the phone when it connected after the second ring.

“Are you okay?” Derek’s voice asked and Stiles felt briefly like he was going to faint. Good thing he was already sitting down.

“You’re alive,” he breathed and there was a surprised silence on the other side.

“Yes, I am,” Derek finally said. “It wasn’t that bad,” he defensively said and Stiles chuckled, just so he didn’t have to cry.

“Scott said you fell. That you weren’t moving.”

“I’m fine, Stiles. I’m fine.”

“You sound tired,” Stiles said with a frown and he could hear Derek sigh.

“Healing is exhausting,” he eventually said and Stiles promised himself to get a full list on Derek’s injuries later.

“But you’re healing,” he pressed.

“Yes, I am,” Derek answered softly. “I’m as good as new already.”

“You’re lying,” Stiles accused him and Derek huffed.

“Now who isn’t supposed to call attention to that?” he asked, and Stiles rolled his eyes.

“I’m allowed to if your health is on the line,” he decided.

“My health isn’t on the line. Not anymore.”

“But it was,” Stiles stated and he cursed this whole damn trip. He should have been there for Derek.

“It might have been,” Derek admitted and Stiles felt cold at the thought that he could have lost Derek.

There was a short silence before Derek asked “Are you okay?”

“I don’t… I don’t know,” Stiles lowly admitted and he could tell that Derek was immediately alert.

“What happened? Are you hurt? Where are you?”

It sounded like he was ready to come and get Stiles is he so much as hinted at the fact that he needed it so Stiles was quick to stop him.

“I’m not hurt. We’re on that damn road trip, you know the one Isaac wouldn’t shut up about but things…. didn’t go too well,” Stiles said.

“Were you attacked? One of the twins is with you, right?”

“Not that I… I mean, I guess,” Stiles told him, thinking back to what Lydia had told him about what she saw.

“Not in a way were claws would have helped, but it was pretty horrible anyway.”

“What happened?” Derek softly asked again and Stiles sighed.

“We were at this stupid motel and things just went to shit. Ethan tried to kill himself with a handsaw. Isaac was hiding under the bed, Boyd tried to drown himself. Scott,” Stiles started but his voice almost broke on the name. “Scott drenched himself with gasoline and almost set himself on fire,” he whispered.

“Is he okay?” Derek immediately asked and Stiles really wished he could hug him right now.

“He’s fine, everyone’s fine. There was some kind of wolfsbane in Coach’s whistle. It did all kinds of whacky stuff to them, but it’s sorted out, everyone’s fine.”

“I don’t think the word ‘fine’ holds any meaning anymore,” Derek lightly said and Stiles couldn’t help but laugh at that.

“Which is exactly the reason you used it just a few minutes ago, right?”

“I’m okay, I promise. I’m not bleeding and I am healing.”

“Alright. I believe you,” Stiles told him.

“The thing with Scott….,” Derek trailed off. “How are you dealing with it?”

“I’m …,” he was about to say fine, but stopped at the last second. “I don’t know. Scott was standing in that puddle of gasoline, ready to drop the flare and I didn’t know what to do, he’s my brother, you know, I couldn’t just…” Stiles took a steadying breath. “I might have done the dumb thing and stepped in the puddle with him, telling him that he wouldn’t have to do this alone,” Stiles admitted and there was a sharp intake of breath on the other line.

“Stiles,” Derek croaked out and there was a faint note of panic to his voice.

“It’s alright, I took the flare, Lydia knocked us out of the gasoline, no one got hurt, I promise,” he quickly reassured Derek.

“No one got physically hurt,” Derek said and Stiles sighed.

“Okay, yeah, I might be scarred for life, but we’re all good. We’re on our way back, all safe and sound.”

“How long till you get back?” Derek asked.

“Two hours maybe?” Stiles told him and he could imagine Derek nodding on the other end.

“Come by when you’re here,” he told Stiles, who frowned.

“What? Why?”

“I need to…” Derek said and then stopped but Stiles knew how that sentence ended.

I need to make sure that you’re okay. Stiles could relate. He would feel better seeing Derek himself so it wasn’t really difficult to make the decision.

“Okay. I’ll come by right after,” he promised and then got distracted when Isaac yelled for him to get his ass going, they were leaving the rest stop.

“I’ll see you,” he quickly told Derek.

“See you then, Stiles,” came the reply right before he hung up on him. Stiles felt strangely jittery after the call, but also lighter than he had the past twenty four hours.

~*~*~

When Stiles dropped by the loft, Derek didn’t hesitate to pull him into a bone crushing hug. It was only then that Stiles truly felt settled.

a thought:

Derek loses a bet with Erica, and so the next time he goes to Starbucks he has to order “one coffee, as black as my soul” with a completely straight face. 3 minutes later the barista hands him a giant latte with extra whipped cream and a marshmallow on top, with a completely straight face.

(Obviously Stiles is the barista, what were you expecting?)

You never can be prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse.

A/n: So, I am alive and back to business. And just because youtube is a Grade A copyright knight I can’t post the thumbnail to this vid. So I’m just gonna post it here:

During his move to Washington, DC, Stiles made a number of realizations about life, the most prominent of which was that it was amazing what kind of hobbies a guy could pick up when his days weren’t packed full of running for his life from various supernatural horrors. Like trivia nights, for example. Stiles had a regular team and the entire bar groaned when they walked in because they knew they were about to get creamed.

Or the tabletop gaming club he joined, where everyone was just as competitive as he was, and punches had been thrown on more than one occasion.

Or like, Stiles jogged now.

Through the National Mall.

Like Captain America or some shit.

And with these hobbies came a sort of routine, and though most were on hold during the summer when his trivia team and gaming rivals were back home, the running stuck. It was calming and got his mind off things, gave him a chance to think about any papers he had to write, or de-stress about his FBI internship when it got a little hectic.

It was a good routine.

So every Saturday morning, Stiles got up a little earlier so he could get in his longer route, and left his dorm for his jog through the National Mall. On Saturdays, he took the path that went through the war memorials, down into West Potomac Park, and over to the Jefferson Memorial. It was his favorite place to take a breather because that early in the morning, there were rarely any tourists, and other joggers left him alone. It was nice and private, with a great view of the city across the water.

Stiles leaned back against the front steps and glanced around him casually, making sure there was no one too close before pulling out his little burner flip phone.

He had an old school drug dealer flip phone. His dad would be so proud.

There was only one number the phone ever called, so there was no need to save it under a name.

He waited for a few minutes, biding his time until the clock hit 7:15am, and then he called that number.

On the third ring, Derek picked up.

“Morning, sunshine!” Stiles greeted, already wide awake from his jog. Derek grunted back. He must’ve had a late night at the bar. “Any leads?”

Derek yawned loudly. “Still no werewolves with triskele tattoos, still wanted for murder.”

Sterek AU: Falling in love with a cold blooded assassin like Stiles Stilinski was never the plan. Just sex, Stiles had said the first time they fell into bed, just this. But life rarely goes according to plan and Derek found himself too close to the point of no return, too close to getting his heart irreparably broken. When he decides this needs to be the end for them, the end of a life of always second guessing Stiles and inevitably getting hurt, he’s expecting Stiles to just walk away, to keep going with his life as though Derek was never in it. Love, after all, had never been part of the deal.

As it turns out, they’re both good at breaking the rules, at least when it comes to each other.

Thrilled to be reunited with my fave fandom partners (ljummen and tsumi) to bring you this Sterek treat for Valentine’s!

One Life Stand by Vendelin (Businessman!Derek/Prostitute!Stiles, 84K)

Stiles is used to selling himself to make ends meet. But it’s getting harder to keep those ends meeting, and there’s only so much of Stiles to go around. Until a too-fancy car shows up in his neighborhood, and he meets Derek Hale.

All Derek wants is Stiles’s time, someone to stay on his arm for events and smile for the cameras. It’s the easiest job Stiles has ever had, the best-paying one he’s ever had, and he’s more than happy to sign up.

Derek is everything and nothing Stiles expects him to be, with his tailored suits, sharp mind and his quiet way of caring. But it’s just a job and Stiles never meant to fall in love.

Masterlist

When he was 3 years old, he watched in amazement as the big truck pulled up to the curb of the suburban neighborhood he called home. With his nose pressed against the glass he watched two men step out of the truck and start unloading boxes onto the driveway. The simple action fascinated him for reasons he couldn’t explain.

The sun caught the exterior of the bright red minivan that pulled into the driveway, causing him to squint. He couldn’t believe his eyes when a girl hopped out of the backseat.

“Woah.” He mumbled against the glass, his hot breath causing it to fog up. Quickly wiping it away, he watched as she danced around the lawn while the rest of her family started moving boxes. Her pigtails bounced behind her as she ran around.

“Stiles? What are you doing?” His dad asked curiously. Before he could answer, his father noticed the moving truck and family moving in across the street. “Wanna go say hi?” His father offered, placing a hand on the small boy’s shoulder. Nodding furiously, he smiled up at his father.

It’s been about a week of driving on the road, and Stiles gets to his place and drops his things off. The rest of his stuff will be delivered in about another week.

Stiles stands in the stillness of his tiny apartment and closes his eyes, takes in the quiet, a quiet he hasn’t heard and felt in a long time, when his phone dings.

Stiles opens his eyes, sees it’s text from Scott asking if he made it by the time he said he would. Stiles answered he made it, and then shuts his phone down, and proceeds to lay down on all the blankets he brought with him - his bed won’t be there for a few more days, at least - and sleep.

It’s night when he wakes up, and the street lights are shining into his apartment where he lay in the almost bare living room. Stiles turns on his phone, and this time his heart skips a beat - and Stiles doesn’t quite know why - when he sees the text he’d been expecting from Derek:

Have you made it? Do you want to meet up?

It was sent an hour ago. Stiles replies back, saying he did and he would, but since it’s night time, they could meet tomorrow?

But Derek replies back a few minutes later that he wouldn’t might meeting up that night. It’s only 7PM, and so Stiles agrees and they agree to meet at a coffee shop a few blocks from where Stiles lives - Derek has been living in D.C. for a few months now, and ever since Stiles told Derek where he would be living, Derek made a point to get to know the area around it. Stiles found that oddly sweet, but he would never tell Derek that.

Stiles’ heart is beating wildly as he leaves, locking his door behind him. He hasn’t seen Derek in over a year now. They’ve talked over the year, actually they’d talked quite a lot in the past few months, especially, but Stiles hadn’t been face to face with Derek in well over a year.

Stiles feels and equal measure of excitement and nerves. He feels almost jumpy as he heads down the stairs in his apartment building, and then out into the warm summer night D.C. air.

He texts Derek that he’s on his way, and Derek texts back that he’s already there, waiting outside.

Stiles gulps and licks his lips, and walks faster, pocketing his phone.

Stiles is away from the only home he’s known for 18 years. But he feels oddly free. He misses Scott, his dad, everyone like crazy, but he also feels less…heavy. Less like he was drowning. Stiles still looked around him surreptitiously, not able to shake off the habit from almost two and a half years of danger and destruction happening to and around him, but the air is quiet, people barely spare him a glance.

It feels wonderful.

Stiles is able to breathe

He couldn’t remember the last time he felt this relaxed.

When he rounds the corner to the coffee shop, he freezes, his inhale sharp when he sees Derek standing outside, and then it feels like his heart trips over itself when Derek hears him and turns towards him, and they lock eyes.

Derek looks good. He looks as relaxed as Stiles felt. Derek was still in the tight jeans that Stiles remembered him wearing all the time (and damn, they always made Stiles stare a little longer than he should have) but his shirt looked soft and comfortable, and it was a light purple color that made Derek look absolutely…amazing.

And he wasn’t wearing his signature leather jacket. He wasn’t standing with his arms over his chest. They were at his sides, just hanging, relaxed. He also wasn’t scowling. He was grinning. At Stiles.

And Stiles found himself grinning back. He let out a shocked laugh, and then he was walking fast toward Derek, who started walking toward him too.

Stiles sped up the last ten or so feet, and then Stiles was practically jumping into Derek’s awaiting arms, and Derek gave a small “oof” as if Stiles, fragile human that he was, was able to knock the breath out of Derek.

“Sorry,” Stiles murmured.

But he felt Derek shake his head and wrap Stiles up firmly in his arms, and Stiles breathed out softly, tightening his arms around Derek’s shoulders and resting his cheek against Derek’s.

“I missed you,” Stiles whispered, surprised he let that slip out. But he did nothing to take the words back.

“I missed you, too,” Derek said, and Stiles shivered. He and Derek had mostly texted over the past year, and the last time they had talked on the phone had been months ago. Stiles had missed his soft, beautiful voice. It was like honey to Stiles’ ears.

Two and a half years. That’s how long Stiles had basically lived in hell.

But now….now, Stiles was getting out of it. With Derek, who actually picked Stiles up enough that Stiles was then on his tippy toes, somehow bringing Stiles closer in his arms, and Stiles huffed out a laugh.

“Derek-”

“Shh, just enjoy it,” Derek murmured.

“Can’t imagine the Derek I knew saying that,” Stiles whispered. Even at the end, before Derek left, when he was in such a good place, he hadn’t quite been like this. So happy. So relaxed. So ready to hug someone. And hug them closely, for that matter.

“Yeah, well…some time away helps,” Derek murmured, and Stiles felt his heart beating faster when he felt Derek brush his lips lightly against Stiles’ neck.

“Good thing I’m getting some time away, then,” Stiles murmured. And then after a long moment, “with you,” Stiles said.

He felt Derek inhale sharply, and then the arms around him tighten. But it didn’t feel restrictive. It felt amazingly comforting. Stiles felt warm, safe. Relaxed. And maybe even a little bit happy.

“I’m glad you’re getting time away, too. With me.”

Stiles smiled, buried his smile against Derek’s shoulder, and then decided to hold on to Derek just a little longer.

He didn’t feel the need to be anywhere else.

Derek would know the sound of Stiles Stilinski’s Jeep anywhere, but it was still a surprise to see it pulling down the dirt road to the compound in Mexico where he and Cora had been living for the last year.

“Stiles,” Derek said with a smile when the Jeep stopped, “How have you been?”

“Get in loser, we have a town to help save,” Stiles said with a wide smile that Derek knew meant trouble, “again.”

“What happened this time,” Derek asked as Stiles put the car in park and hopped out. He was taller and broader than he had been the last time Derek had seen him, he looked more settled. He looked good.

“How the hell should I know, it feels like there’s some new crisis every couple months and they keep getting more and more outrageous,” Stiles said, “So you want to come help or what?”

“Sure,” Derek said, looking at Cora who shot him a knowing look, it clearly told him that she knew what was motivating him to go back, “Let me grab some clothes.”

Twenty minutes later Derek hugged Cora goodbye and got into the passenger seat of the Jeep. The gearshift whined when Stiles changed from second to third, but the car kept going.

“I can’t believe this thing is still alive and kicking,” Derek said with fondness in his voice. The Jeep (and Stiles) had saved his life more than once, he would never forget that.

Stiles flicked him on the let and said, “Roscoe has only ever been nice to you, show him some respect.”

“Of course,” Derek said with a smile, “I owe him my life after all. Both of you.”

The look Stiles gave him was appraising, like he wasn’t sure if Derek was being serious, but when he spoke he said, “I think we’re even at this point.”

“If you say so,” Derek said, flipping on the radio to fill the quiet.

“I do,” Stiles said, looking at Derek again and making his stomach flip.

After a long moment Derek said, “When this is all over, we could thank each other over dinner.”

“Or we could thank each other at the motel we’re saying at tonight,” Stiles said with a smirk, like he was expecting Derek to blush and change the subject.

“I could thank you all night long if you want,” Derek said and Stiles blushed, his mouth opening in shock, “But I think we should get some sleep when we get there, if I know Beacon Hills at all, we’re in for a long fight.”

When it was all over and the dust settled, Stiles thanked Derek and Derek thanked Stiles.

All night and well into the morning, in several different positions. When they left Beacon Hills a week later, neither of them looked back.

So I just reblogged this post:

I JUST SERVED A CUSTOMER AND THEY WERE PURCHASING A CUCUMBER AND THEY WENT

“It’s for Valentine’s Day”

I REPLIED

“You must be lonely?”

THEY REALISED WHAT I MEANT AND NOW I’M SAT WITH A COMPLAINANT FORM IN FRONT OF ME.

And now I’m just imagining Derek Hale at the supermarket at like nine at night on Feb. 13, innocently going through the checkout with his cucumber…..

*

It’s nine at night on February 13 when this hot-like-burning guy in a leather jacket comes up to Stiles’ lane at the supermarket and plops down a single cucumber and a crumpled dollar bill on the belt.

Stiles hefts it. “Uh, just this?”

The guy nods and offers, “It’s, um, for Valentine’s Day.”

Stiles blurts, “You must be lonely,” because this is his brain on less than three hours of sleep, ladies and gentlemen of the jury. College sucks.

Cucumber Guy’s eyes widen behind his thick-framed glasses (glasses that do nothing to diminish his attractiveness, unfortunately) and he just stands there staring at Stiles, color flooding to his cheeks.

Stiles replays what he just said in his head and mentally slaps himself. “No, wait, that’s not—”

Cucumber Guy just shakes his head, takes his cucumber and his receipt, and walks away.

Seeing Hoechlin with his salt and pepper beard got me thinking about Derek Hale with beard mascara (That’s a thing, look it up) and then…

Like, Derek turns 30 and the pack is off doing god knows what at college, when one day he finds a grey hair in his beard and he gets so fucking insecure so he buys the beard mascara and he covers it all up.

Then one day, suddenly, Stiles is in his loft after he’s taken a shower and he walks out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist and Stiles says, “Are those grey hairs?”

And Derek’s heart starts pounding because it’s Stiles and he didn’t want Stiles to see that, not just because Stiles likes to make jokes and poke fun at him but also because Derek might like Stiles a little. Or a lot.

And he says, “Let it go, Stiles.”

But Stiles, being Stiles, doesn’t listen and gets all up in his space and cups Derek’s face and tilts it and Derek knows what he’s seeing, grey hairs glinting in the light. He has to concentrate to hold his claws back and he’s so ready for Stiles to make a joke about becoming an old man, fucking tensed for it when Stiles says, “Oh my god, that is both hot and adorable.”

Which, what. What. That hadn’t been at all what Derek had been expecting, but now Stiles is staring at him, mouth open and pupils blown and Derek wants to kiss him so bad. So he does, and again, and again, and he laughs when Stiles runs his fingers through his beard, trying to find the grey hairs by touch, and Stiles laughs with him.

Pst hi I LOVE YOUR FICS you have no idea how much they give me life <3 <3 I came across this really cute (and frankly heartbreaking) AU: "[burgler gently wakes me] you live like this?" (stolen from a post I saw on fb) and I kinda just need Stiles to do everything he can to make Derek's life better? THANK YOU SO MUCH :D

It IS frankly heartbreaking… which means I’m totally into it.

(now also on AO3!)

Derek definitely went to sleep alone. He always does, these days. It doesn’t explain why he drifts awake in the middle of the night to the feeling of someone lightly poking his shoulder.

It’s probably not a good sign that when he opens his eyes and sees a gangly teenage boy in a red hoodie and grubby-looking black fingerless gloves standing over him, he doesn’t startle. His claws don’t come out; his eyes don’t flash. He just feels… resigned.

“You live like this?” the guy says, soft. Almost pitying. “I mean. You actually live here?”

That seems too obvious, not to mention too insulting, to merit a response. “What are you doing here?” Derek asks instead. His voice comes out low and rough. This is the first time in days he’s had any reason to say anything. “This is private property.”

The guy shifts on his feet and sticks his hands under his armpits uncomfortably. “Okay, straight to the awkward questions. I like that.”

Y/N couldn’t keep her lips from forming into a smirk as she saw Derek’s picture appear on her phone. She had just moved back to Beacon Hills earlier today into her new apartment. She had spent most of the day unpacking her boxes, and was already in bed watching a movie on her laptop. She quickly swiped her thumb across the phone and answered. “Hello, stranger. It’s after midnight. No guy ever calls a girl after midnight except for one-"

"Y/N…” Derek interrupted followed by a loud growl. Y/N could hear Derek’s heartbeat going crazy and his labored breathing. What caught her attention was hearing another heartbeat. “I need you."

His voice was filled with worry, which caused Y/N to sit up straight in her bed alarmed. "Derek, where are you?”

“I don’t know…” he whispered unexpectedly. He no longer sounded like he was in pain or fighting against someone. He now sounded weak and hurt.

“Derek, I need you to talk to me. What do you see?” She asked as she quickly got out of bed to get dressed.

“I can’t… see anything…” he mumbled. She rushed as she heard his heartbeat getting weaker by the second.

She swallowed hard as she closed her eyes, letting a tear fall down her cheek. She was absolutely terrified for him. “Derek… I’m going to come and get you, okay? But I need to call Stiles to help me. Can you answer the phone if I call you back?”

“My phone… is going to die…”

“Fuck!” She whispered to herself. She put on her shoes as an idea crossed her mind. “After you hang up with me, turn off your phone and save the battery for about 10 minutes. That’ll be about the time it will take me to get to Stiles’ office at the police station. I’ll call you back but you have to answer, okay?”

“O… kay…” he mumbled weakly.

“Derek?” Her voice trembled. He hummed a small ‘yes’. “Please answer the phone."

"I promise,” he said before he hung up and turned off his phone like he was told to do.

Y/N grabbed her keys before rushing to her car. Her fingers trembled as she dialed Stiles’ number. For some strange reason a flashback flooded her mind to the first time she went to Stiles for help with Derek.

anonymous asked:

I think the most important question of all time is if Derek prefers belly rubs, or is he the kind of 'clingy when cuddling' boyfriend so he just lays on top of Stiles and lets him rub his back (and sometimes his butt) ? My personal headcanon is that werewolves can get sort of stoned from their mate's scent and Derek once a month likes to climb into Stiles' lap and melt into his arms surrounded by his boyfriend's scent. Bonus pie points if Derek steals Stiles' shirts to wear when he's napping

You have no idea how much I just screamed over this ask. This is being filed under “favourites”, for sure.

I think Derek is the type of guy who really, really likes cuddles and anything that involves getting to touch Stiles, but pretends he’s completely indifferent to it/does it only to “shut Stiles up”. Which, you know, is complete lies. The first time Stiles sleeps next to Derek in a bed, it’s painfully obvious Derek wants to cuddle but he just doesn’t know how to go about asking. Poor, awkward lamb. Stiles nearly makes a joke at Derek’s expense about how obvious it is because, well, but he refrains at the last minute upon seeing Derek’s face - Derek doesn’t just look nervous, he looks scared, like he might be rejected - and shaking his head (because this adorable asshole) Stiles shifts closer and hastily mumbles something about not having his pillow, “so you’ll have to do, big guy”.

Before they get together, it takes a while for Derek to get used to being tactile with Stiles. Derek is fine touching other people - he has the control that way - but he’s still not good with people touching him. Unfortunately, that’s not a great combination when you are a touch starved werewolf with trust issues, because it pretty much means the only kind of physical contact Derek ever receives is either in life or death situations or during (not so fun and friendly) pack training sessions. Not ideal. Of course, after a while, Stiles clocks this.

Stiles has known about Derek’s touch issues since he first met him, but it’s better now (he thinks). So he tries small things: sitting next to Derek during pack movie nights and pressing his leg against his; letting himself fall asleep on Derek’s shoulder (desperately trying not to read too much into it when Derek doesn’t move away); and, a few times, hugging Derek goodbye and lingering longer than he should each time he does it.

After a while, Derek starts touching Stiles back. One day, he just crawls through Stiles’ window and sits by Stiles’ bed until Stiles - very tired and not thinking things through too much - puts a hand on Derek’s shoulder and tells him in no uncertain terms “ to get up here for some Stilinski spooning time”. Derek grumbles at that but he’s in Stiles’ bed exactly twenty seconds later, which gives Stiles major pause for thought.

Major.

And listen, this is how it goes on. They aren’t even together but Derek touching Stiles and being touched by him soon becomes A Thing. For both of them. A very important thing. The life of Derek Hale suddenly becomes about three things: the pack, Cora, and Stiles.

Sometimes, Stiles sleeps over at the loft. Not for any reason other than the fact Stiles does a lot of late night research there, but after a while it kind of becomes apparent Stiles is there for “research times” and what he has come to call “Derek’s personal pillow times”. Derek’s person pillow times often involve Derek shyly (but somehow still grumpily) crawling into Stiles’ lap and (not so subtly) scenting him. Stiles asked about the scenting thing once and Derek stopped for three weeks, entirely embarrassed - Derek had looked so upset and torn about the whole thing (aka, he looked like a hurt five year old) that eventually Stiles had just marched into the loft, stuck Batman on, and told Derek to get his “fluffy butt in here. I mean it Derek, my neck is lonely now. Don’t leave a bro in need like this, it’s accustomed to your snout!” Stiles expected Derek to either throw him out or snark at him for that but instead, Derek shuffled - actually shuffled - into the room (still appearing out of nowhere, the creepy show off), holding himself rather tight, before crawling into Stiles’ lap and staying there for exactly 2.5 Batman movies, face buried in Stiles’ neck. (Stiles does not grin manically when he feels Derek’s whole body sag against him, like he hasn’t been able to settle without him.)

During Stiles’ second year of college, they have their first kiss. Well, if a first kiss can be called a first kiss when the dude you are hard core crushing on puts a finger to your lips half way through your perfectly valid rant about why Princess Leia is The Best, stares into your eyes for a solid three minutes (and somehow makes it both awkward and the best fucking thing you have ever experienced when looking at someone), before placing a very soft and intimate kiss to your neck. Stiles has no idea what it even means until he eventually plucks up the courage to ask Cora who instantly threatens him with bodily harm if Stiles hurts her brother. (”So, uh, the neck thing was…..?” “My brother’s traditional, dorky way of telling you he loves you. Duh. Jesus Stiles, and you call yourself our Emissary?”)

From then on out, Derek’s attachment to touching Stiles just becomes more intense. In front of people and the pack he’ll settle for holding hands or being next to Stiles, but in private he becomes like a lazy cat. He gets very pouty when he wakes up and finds Stiles not in bed for morning cuddles; he loves being able to wash Stiles’ hair; back rubs and head rubs are his favourite, especially when he’s reading or they are watching movies (Derek’s introducing all the classics to Stiles, like Rebecca and The Breakfast Club; “no, Spider-man doesn’t count as a classic, Stiles” “says who?” “says me if you still want a blow job later” ). Mostly though, he just loves being in his old position of sitting in Stiles’ lap and burying his face in Stiles’ neck.

Sometimes Stiles will talk about his day while Derek does this and it works for both of them because Derek is surrounded by Stiles’ scent, his voice, his whole being; and that calms him, settles him in a way he hasn’t been since before the fire. And in turn, having someone to listen to him - really, truly listen - while he’s talking, brings Stiles a kind of happiness he’s never experienced before. Sure, people hear him. They talk to him and hold conversations. But sooner or later Stiles always sees their eyes wander, sees the start of a yawn or is outright told to shut up.

Stiles knows his attention isn’t anything to write home about but there is a difference between being unable to hold someone’s attention and someone just not wanting to hold your attention, specifically. Of course, Derek still tells Stiles to shut up, that’s never a thing that stopped between them, but now it usually ends in heated make out sessions or sex, so, Stiles really has no complaints. But in moments like these, with Derek in his lap, Derek just listens. He can sit for hours and never tires of Stiles. If Stiles is happy, he smiles into his neck, makes these little happy sounds; if he’s sad, he’ll kiss his neck, and murmur quiet things; angry, he’ll hold him tighter and let him vent, for as long as he likes.

Some couples have hobbies, have things, but this is their ritual. Just this. Every other day, just having this quiet moment of peace and happiness. A bubble no one can penetrate. It’s a visible anchor, the place they always come back to. It’s a place they both need; the place Stiles needs when he’s feeling insecure and the place Derek needs when he’s feeling lonely. Nothing can touch them in it, no high is better. Especially to Derek who really can feel a little drunk off of Stiles’ scent, sometimes. It’s a kind of closeness both of them have always craved but never really gotten. It’s Derek’s way of saying I love you when he finds it difficult to say it. It’s Stiles’ way of knowing I’m needed when he doubts it.

It’s just them, and even though it sometimes freaks Stiles out - the stillness, the fact he can be this still, for hours - it serves as a precious reminder that after all the chaos, after all the loss and heart break, that they found this: they found a small and quiet, beautiful thing. And they found it in each other, which is both the most baffling and the least surprising thing of all.
