- STEELERS SIGN NT STEVE MCLENDON TO THREE-YEAR CONTRACT -
The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed restricted free agent nose tackle Steve McLendon to new a three-year contact on Thursday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports.
According to S…chefter, McLendon’s new deal is worth $7.25 million with $1.675 guaranteed.
Re-signing McLendon helps the Steelers avoid losing another starter to free agency. McLendon just recently made a visit to the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday. If the Packers would have signed him, the Steelers would have been forced to either match that contract or let him go and receive no compensation in return.
The Steelers already have lost three starters as free agents – wide receiver Mike Wallace, cornerback Keenan Lewis and halfback Rashard Mendenhall – and released starting linebacker James Harrison. They’ve held on to projected starting receiver Emmanuel Sanders for at least one more year when they matched the one-year, $2.5 million offer sheet Sunday that he had signed with New England.
Teams have until Friday to sign restricted free agents. By signing McLendon so quickly it was obvious the Steelers feared the Packers would try to sign him. (Photo: Associated Press)
