Don Juan: 俺の名は (Mon Nom)/My Name [lyric translation]

I translated this song for fun to tide me over between the iTunes soundtrack release and the dvd release. It’s Don Juan’s self-introduction, of sorts, so absolutely no spoilers.

Japanese lyrics transcribed from the iTunes soundtrack by me and my ears

To the anon who's worrying about overwatch/quick play: It's really intimidating at first, but it gets more fun the more you play. Take it one step at a time and you'll move up, have more fun, and get at least one PoTG!!

We’re all here for ya

@foxrising and I did some worldbuilding on THE END OF THE WORLD

  • with the collapse of the Pillar, the Shade took over large swathes of the planet that were unprotected by the wards of the broken Pillar fragments. the gods populated the remaining territories with dragonkind, the flights bordered by the Okeanos, the sea which provides a buffer from the Shade.
  • the dragon gods and their young flights fought for dominance over what remained of the realm, as all the while the Shade sought to encroach upon it. some of the Exalted ranks, growing disillusioned with the in-fighting that ignored the pressing Shade threat, defected to the very ends of their known world.
  • there, the dragons began the grueling task of beating back the Shade, one step at a time, seeking to reclaim the rest of Sornieth. their numbers grew over time, as more dragons joined in their efforts, either seeing it as a worthy cause or for their own personal reasons. eventually the group was named the Bastion, and the gods, seeing how their creations had seen the larger picture when they could not, gave their blessings and support.

  • the Bastion has numerous outposts cutting across the end of the world, a line of defence against the Shade. wards connect from one outpost to the next, and the Veil extends wherever there is successful reclamation.
  • the Bastion as an organisation is mostly made up of dragons originally from the Exalted, who have chosen to join it, leaving their flight affiliations behind. however, there are also communities and individuals who have settled at the end of the world, taking shelter in the shadow of the Veil. these include dragons who have, for whatever reason, left the flight and clan systems, beastclans, and even pirates, seeking profits in the reclaimed lands, which may house valuable first and second age artefacts.
  • the Veil cuts across both land and water. the leviathans formed from the Shade are a particular problem for the Bastion outposts on water, as the deep waters pose a problem to effective control over the area. in answer, the Bastion has scattered golems throughout the depths of the ocean designed to react to the presence of the encroaching Shade, sealing or dragging the Shade into the light.
  • there are two main groups in the Bastion: the first are the Sentinels, who guard the outpost and maintain the wards of the Veil. the second are the Vanguard, who go beyond the Veil to fight the Shade’s influence. at larger, more established outposts, there may be two outpost Commanders to lead each group, instead of just one.
  • the Vanguard teams work on a rotation system: due to the corrupting and sapping influence of the Shade on draconic magic, teams are only allowed to go beyond the Veil for one to two weeks, before they need to return to the outpost to rest.
  • while the Bastion has eschewed flight affiliations, Dominance perks still apply to the dragons, and they make good use of it. dragons of a dominant flight are usually rotated into lead positions in the Sentinels and the Vanguard, as that is when they are strongest against the Shade.
  • communications and supplies between outposts are maintained through a network of courier dragons and goliath turtles, specially bred to ferry dragons and supplies across the lawless waters. after the turtles have reached a certain age, they are released from service to the Bastion and free to live out their days at the end of the world, resulting in quite a few “islands” appearing and disappearing overnight.

  • a dead wasteland corrupted by the Shade, nothing remains of the planet that was but still expanses of black water and black sky, blending into a void horizon. even the stars overhead have disappeared, blocked or swallowed by the Shade. dragons that remain beyond the Veil too long report strange phenomena - distant movement and flickering lights at the periphery, an unearthly wail of shattering stone, water lilies veined with sickly black blooming in unending salt water. stranger tales too have been reported by lone survivors and dying travelers, driven mad by the vast stillness.
  • reclamation of the Shade-corrupted territories is a slow, painstaking process of numerous purifications and terraforming. still, the Bastion persists, extending the end of the world inch by inch, and looks forward to the day when the Shade can be purged from the land.

Rare were the times he ever bothered to break from that explicitly monotonous mask that’d fused from brow to lip - it’s only after an evening spent flickering from apartment bathroom to apartment bathroom in a wake of enough heady lemon-bleach aroma to make even his own desensitized nose burn blissfully, Claude spun at the first clack of footsteps and pointed a toilet brush at the door. “Mind you, savage–” and he stepped hastily in time to bar them entry. Just over his head, a long silvery spider web had coiled across the threshold. “Such a sad detail of life,” Claude sighed, and lowered the toilet brush. “What’s one being’s most dedicated work, and you might’ve destroyed it by putting your head through it.”

“-and then you called me ‘Toots’ and I was just like, naaaaah…”

“I know, amazing right?”

“More like amazing that you didn’t punch me unconscious.”

“Shoot, yeah! That could’ve saved a bunch of hassle… Okay, 'you ever do it again and I’ll straight-up exorcise you with a fist to the face. Deal?”

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that fandom will advocate the romantic sub-plot between two main characters, unless one character is portrayed by an actor who is a person of colour. This phenomenon within white fandom is called ‘why can’t they remain as friends, I feel a certain discomfort with a potential relationship between *insert ship*, for which the strength of this WOC will be threatened by any romantic subtext because every woman of colour is an island”. This phenomena or “discomfort” is commonly known as racism.

He began to feel the danger of paying Elizabeth too much attention.
