She wanted to learn. She wanted to study. She was really taken by Lincoln. She had read a little bit about him, and somebody must have given her my Lincoln, because in the magazine photograph, she is walking to the aeroplane holding my book. It is very obvious because mine was a big book with a big “Lincoln” heading and his picture is on the cover. After I got to know her, I sent her a picture of Lincoln looking like a young and handsome movie actor. I made a big enlargement, had it framed, and sent it to her either for her birthday or Christmas. She hung that picture over her bed.
