steampunk parts

Yes, I’m still in orrery mode - a little one set in a pocket watch case.  The planets are solid metal - gold, silver and copper tones.  It was made to be a desk ornament but could be very carefully used as a fob or pendant.  It doesn’t move - no orbit or rotation - just an assemblage piece made to look like it might move.

Steampunk Orrery Jewelry

I set myself a challenge last year to make an orrery (model of the solar system) to fit under a glass dome that is under an inch wide.  There is a pile of rejects on my desk - it took a long time to find the right supplies and construction. The “planets” are half beads resting on a vintage hairspring.  They needed to be very light so they didn’t drag the spring down.  I would love to have found copper tone half beads for Mars and Jupiter but I couldn’t source any.  Saturn does have her ring!

I must stress - nothing moves on this pendant.  It is a static representation not a true mechanical orrery.  One day I would love to create tiny moving ones.  It is sealed under the glass to keep it pristine.

The pendant is 1 ½ inches high and 1 inch wide.  The brass faceted cut cable link chain has a fixed drop of 13 inches long (from the pendant to the clasp) for a total length of 26 inches.  It has a lobster claw clasp.

I’m selling this in my Etsy store https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/steelhipdesign

Orrery 16

This will be one of the last to be made with the clear pocket watch as a base. It’s always a bit sad when I run out of a limited vintage supply but it also stops me getting into a creative rut. These can be a nightmare to make because it’s very easy to completely stuff them up in the final building hours. The scratch build gods must have been on my side this past week because it came together perfectly.

I must reiterate that this does NOT move at all. All movement is just alluded to by the gears, spring and other motifs. One day I’ll make a real one with orbits, moons and rotation…

It is available in my etsy shop:

1. Stardust in Your Eyes by senorbunnicula || Rated G , 9.3k

Phichit waves a careless hand, swinging his feet as they dangle off the floor. “The Nikforovs won’t care that you didn’t receive an invitation. They invite pretty much all of the nobility to their Gala every year, so it’s not like they’ll notice. Plus, I was invited, so obviously, you’ll tag along with me!”

Yuuri almost points out that the Chulanots, like the Nikiforovs, are rich as well as titled, while Yuuri is the last lowly scion of a penniless baronetcy–barely nobility at all, only known to the people of the Citadel as That Excellent Mechanic Lord Victor Talks About–but he knows it won’t do any good.

Vaguely steampunkish/vaguely Cinderellaish AU

  • I really liked the worldbuilding and setup for this! It’s very easy to read and flows really well, I definitely enjoyed reading it. It’s a very fun take on a cliche storyline, and just generally it’s not something you’d regret reading at all. The steampunk part also fits in really nicely.

2.  A Tango for Two by regardinglove || Rated T, 7.5k (WIP)

Yuuri’s lifelong dream has been to make his break into competitive dancing on the hit television series, A Tango For Two. The last thing he expected was for his celebrity crush, figure skating legend Victor Nikiforov, to become his celebrity dance partner.

Or, a Dancing With the Stars AU

  • The first chapter so far is just setup, but it’s very promising so far! The setup itself’s been quite fun to read, and I have very high hoopes for this one partly bc I haven’t seen this type of au before and because I really look forward to how it continues.

3. First Night by Salty_Caramel || Rated M, 9.5k

An ancient law, made in a fit of jealousy by a tyrannous Keiser centuries ago, decrees as follows: in the case of a wedding taking place in his jurisdiction, the Ruler of the Land may take the newlywed to his own bed on the first night of their marriage, with no repercussions, if he so pleases.

As no Keiser or Keiserina since has been in mind to commit such an abomination, the commandment was, over the years, forgotten in its obscurity…

…that is, until an envoy of the Keiser arrives just in time for the celebrations of the wedding of Yuuri Katsuki, proclaiming the Keiser wishes to make use of his right.

  • I recced this when it was incomplete, and now it’s complete so it’s back. While the ending was predictable, I still overall enjoyed this fic very much! It’s sort of like having a quick but complete meal.

4.  Венера by Saniika || Rated G, 10.5k (WIP)

On how Yuuri travels to Egypt, Phichit makes everything complicated and they all meet a Sheikh. Yuuri catches Sheikh’s eye and suddenly the stay in Egypt is a lot longer than planned…

“I made the camel drunk.”

And that’s how it all starts…

  • Fucking hell this is hilarious. Phichit gets drunk, Makkachin the camel gets drunk, Yuuri crossdresses once, and Victor is intensely confused. Hilarious, the setting is fun, and the author is clearly having a lot of fun writing this! I’m definitely curious as to how the storyline goes, and how alllllll these complications resolve.

Plasma Vial

I love working with Tritium!  It’s exotic and fits with the steampunk ethos and appeals to the mad scientist in me.  It’s estimated that Tritium will glow for 10 to 15 years.  It glows continuously and does not require “charging” from a light source like glow in the dark items.  It’s used in gun sights and watches.

Dimensions:

Total of pendant section: 2 ½ inches long x 2 inches at the widest point.
Fixed drop chain: From the pendant to the clasp 11 inches long including clasp.

It is designed to be worn high on the body so there is enough room for the vial section to hang.  I can alter the chain if required.

Components:
Pink/orange tritium vial, glass test tube, brass end cap, brass beads, clock parts, mesh eyelet, triangular brass base, copper tone beads, copper tone “beehive” end caps, brass and silver tubing, brass spring, brass washer, copper cable chain, flat brass arc, copper rolo chain, copper bar connectors, brass pin.
