Marauders Music Headcanons

These headcanons are based purely on the Marauders Era (1960′s-1970′s) and the popular music of that time.

SO…

It probably wouldn’t be a huge shocker if Walburga forced Sirius and Regulus to listen to some classical music (by Wizard musicians of course; there would be none of that muggle, Mozart, garbage in 12 Grimmauld Place thanks) So Sirius grows up listening to lyric-less or operatic music that makes him want to gouge his ears out with a goddamned fork. However, after going to Hogwarts and becoming acquainted with muggle-born students, he has a queue of songs written down on at least three feet of parchment. He come to love music with a passion (particularly rock and roll). There are nights where James has been woken up by Sirius singing in his sleep. It’s Sirius’ dream to be able to play the guitar after listening to the amazing guitar solo played between Joe Walsh and Don Felder in Hotel California. One Christmas, Mooney, Prongs and Wormtail pool their money together to get Sirius an acoustic guitar. For the first couple of weeks, it was the worst mistakes of their lives- he won’t stop practicing in his free time, and as any beginner, he isn’t the best. But eventually, he builds up his skill as a guitarist as well as calluses on his fingers from strumming and holding down the cords. FAVORITE SONGS: The Joker (Steve Miller Band); Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 (Pink Floyd); The House of the Rising Sun (The Animals); Fortunate Son (Creedence Clearwater Revival); (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones); While My Guitar Gently Weeps (The Beatles); Oh Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison); Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (The Beatles); TNT (ACDC); Sweet Emotion (Aerosmith); Hotel California (Eagles); Dream On (Aerosmith); Highway To Hell (ACDC); Burnin’ For You (Blue Oyster Cult); Brandy (Looking Glass)

James grows up listening to regular wizard bands. I feel like James had a very eclectic taste in music, so he’ll listen to just about anything and thoroughly enjoy it. He never really listened to muggle bands just because I don’t think neither he or his parents were really exposed to them (especially Euphemia and Fleamont being as old as they were). Like Sirius, he became exposed to modern muggle music upon entering Hogwarts. He was even more compelled to listen to muggle bands when Lily mentioned her favorite band being Fleetwood Mac. James is one of those guys where, when he really;enjoys a song, he’ll play it on repeat until he’s sick of it and goes to find something new to listen to. James favors more lively music that he can dance to. Exerting mental and physical energy into dancing is a favorite of his. When he’s dating Lily, he listens to “Shining Star” by Earth, Wind and Fire for the first time, and he tells her he wants to go to a disco. FAVORITE SONGS: Mr. Blue Sky (Electric Light Orchestra); Dancing Queen (ABBA); Come and Get Your Love (Redbone); Happy Together (The Turtles); My Girl (The Temptations); The Lion Sleeps Tonight (The Tokens); I Heard it Through the Grapevine (Marvin Gaye); YMCA (Village People); Barracuda (Heart); Carry on Wayward Son (Kansas); I Want You To Want Me (Cheap Trick); Tiny Dancer (Elton John); Don’t Bring me Down (Electric Light Orchestra); Strange Magic (Electric Light Orchestra); Turn To Stone (Electric Light Orchestra)

Remus, because his mother was a muggle, was exposed to different kinds of muggle music. Hope (Remus’ mother) would listen to ballads with her son, one of their favorites being “Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac. He and his mother would also listen to the Beatles, of course. “Let It Be” was his favorite song of the Beatles. While he enjoyed listening to music, he definitely wasn’t as passionate/obsessed about it as Sirius was. The kind of music he listened to was mostly folk rock, more mellow jams he could put at a low volume and enjoy as he would make tea, or curl up with a book and a bar of chocolate. Remus appreciated music that could calm him and make him feel more comfortable instead of riled up and excitable. FAVORITE SONGS: Landslide (Fleetwood Mac); Mrs. Robinson (Simon & Garfunkel); Stand by Me (Ben E. King); The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel); American Pie (Don McLean); You’re So Vain (Carly Simon); A Horse With No Name (America); Stuck in the Middle With You (Stealers Wheel); Have You Ever Seen the Rain (Creedence Clearwater); Stairway to Heaven (Led Zepplin); Desperado (Eagles); Take It To The Limit (Eagles); Lean On Me (Bill Withers); Piano Man (Billy Joel); Me and Julio Down By The Schoolyard (Paul Simon)

Peter probably liked the Bee Gees.

“Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond and “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen are the shared favorites among the Marauders.

"During interviews Styles has come across as a progressive in his views about women and his female fans, so it’s a shame that he hasn’t tried to break away from some of the more fatigued gender archetypes that dominate the rock music he clearly loves." (Harry's album review in the Independent). A shame indeed.

Hi anon! That review is an interesting one, thanks for pointing it out. I thought this was interesting too (emphasis mine):

“Carolina” is a fun, swinging jam that loosens up the mood on the album after those two, fairly solemn tracks. For now we’ll ignore the issue of the “good girl” (“She’s a good girl/Such a good girl,” Styles sings on the chorus) trope and instead look at the instrumentation… because there’s no way that riff wasn’t influenced by Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck In The Middle With You” – so much so that this writer had to double check it wasn’t a sample.

Singer/songwriter Gerry Rafferty  was born April 16th 1947  in Paisley.

Rafferty grew up in a council house on the town’s Foxbar estate and was educated at St Mirin’s Academy, his Father and Grandfather were both miners from Irish roots and it was the tradition music from there that he grew up listening to.

After working in a butcher’s shop, as a civil service clerk, and in a shoe shop while making music with his school friend Joe Egan in various bands.  In 69 he collaborated with Tam Harvey and Billy Connolly in The Humblebums. The band went their own ways and Rafferty plugged away as a solo act before joining Egan again with Stealers Wheel, Stuck in the Middle With You reached the top 10 on both sides of the atlantic but before an album could be released Gerry had left the group. and was left unable to release any music for over 3 years due to legal issues.

In 1978, Rafferty cut a solo album, City to City, which would catapult him right into international stardom. Earning praise from many music critics, the release included the song with which he remains most associated: “Baker Street” the single reached the top 5 in the states and over here. The album hit number one in the US and number six in this country, his follow up Night Owls reaped a top ten hit of the same name but fared less well in the charts as did the other albums to follow.

Gerry struggled with alcohol throughout his life and this contributed to his reluctance to play live. Due to his alcohol abuse Gerry died of liver failure on January 4th 2011, he was cremated Woodside Crematorium in Paisley and his ashes later scattered on the Island of Iona.

Even Wes Craven walked out of 'Reservoir Dogs' during the torture scene

Wes Craven was not stuck in the middle during a screening of Reservoir Dogs 25 years ago; the late horror maestro apparently walked out of Quentin Tarantino’s explosive debut during the film’s centerpiece torture scene.

That, at least, is how it happened according to Tarantino himself, who reunited with cast members Harvey Keitel (Mr. White), Steve Buscemi (Mr. Pink), Tim Roth (Mr. Orange), and Michael Madsen (Mr. Blonde) at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday night for an anniversary screening of Reservoir Dogs.

“There was all this talk, the next day about the torture scene,” Tarantino said about how the film was received after its first screening at the Sundance Film Festival in 1992. In the sequence, Madsen’s Mr. Blonde tortures a police officer while Stealers Wheel’s “Stuck in the Middle With You” plays on the soundtrack. The scene, which cuts away from the most violent part (when Mr. Blonde cuts off the cop’s ear), became a “big, big thing” after its Sundance debut, according to Tarantino, who remembered discussing it at the time with Buscemi.

“Steve, he comes to me and he goes, Quentin, did you hear what everyone is saying? They’re saying the torture scene ruins the movie!‘” Tarantino said. “And I go, What are they talking about? It’s the best thing in the f-ing movie! Did you see how many people walked out? That’s the sh!'”

As Tarantino recalled, he spent the better part of 1992 traveling Reservoir Dogs around the world to various film festivals. At each stop, he would count how many walkouts occurred (the high, he said, was 33). But when Tarantino arrived at Spain’s Sitges Film Festival in October of that year, he expected a more forgiving crowd.

“They showed Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, which was just drowned in zombie guts and brains,” Tarantino said of the Sitges Film Festival, which specializes in fantasy and horror films. “Finally I’ve got an audience that won’t walk out. I even joked about that in the opening introduction for the movie.”

He was wrong. “Five people walked out of that audience, including Wes Craven,” Tarantino said. “The f-ing guy who did Last House on the Left walked out? The guy who did Last House on the Left, my movie’s too tough for him.”

Tarantino and Madsen said they rehearsed the concept of the torture scene many times, but Madsen didn’t perform his memorable dance until the day of shooting.

“You never made me do it in rehearsal because I was so intimidated by it. I didn’t know what to do,” Madsen recalled. “In the script, it said, Mr. Blonde maniacally dances around.’ I remember specifically that’s what it said. And I kept thinking, What the f- does that mean? Mick Jagger?'”

Tarantino said the entire scene was done in three takes, but Madsen’s dance occurred during the first.

“I didn’t know what the hell to do. I heard that music and I said, Oh f-, I better do something,'” Madsen said. “I remember thinking about Jimmy Cagney. I remember this weird little thing he did in a movie I saw. He did this crazy little dance thing and it just popped into my head at the last second. That’s where it came from.”

In the 25 years since the debut of Reservoir Dogs, the torture scene has remained one of Tarantino’s most famous. Unsurprisingly, it still follows Madsen around to this day as well.

“I went to Michigan to open up this theater. They were going to name it for Michael Madsen. And I thought it was great,” Madsen recalled. “They sent me a memo of what I was supposed to do and it said, First we’ll announce the naming of the theater and then Michael Madsen will come out doing the Mr. Blonde dance.’ I was like, Oh my God! There is no way I’m going to do that.’ I started imagining myself at 80 years old, someone asking me to do the Mr. Blonde dance. It’s been following me around forever.”

Stuck in the Middle With You

Well, I don’t know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain’t right
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair,
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down those stairs

Yes, I’m stuck in the middle with you,
And I’m wondering what it is I should do
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, and I’m all over the place

Clowns to left of me, jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you
