Only a few years after the majority of ‘experts’ announced that the Crosby-Malkin era was a failure for only winning 1 cup and had missed their window for more, Sid and Geno now have 3 cups and have done what most thought was impossible - becoming back-to-back Stanley Cup champs in the salary cap era.
Ok so I’m not sure how I feel about this one… so let me
know what you guys think! Especially you anon! Enjoy!
Anon Request: Could I request an Auston Matthews imagine
based off the song Own My Own from Les Miserables, where y/n is in love with
him and she thinks he doesn’t like her at all, and Mitch sees her crying about
it one day, so she explains to him why she’s crying, and Mitch tells her to
tell Auston she loves him because he knows he loves her too?
WOW WOW WOW It’s been a long time coming but I’m back baby! This is a request (an old one and I’m very sorry about that) but anyway I figured that the first imagine back should be a Sid one since the cup and everything. (I’m still bitter, I was really rooting for the preds) Anyway here you go!

Your usually rowdy living room was
quiet as you turned off the television. The Penguins had just lost…again. Just
like every team in the NHL the Penguins were going through a drought. But being
the current Stanley Cup champs that drought came with a lot more backlash than
usual. And your husband, Mr. Perfect Sidney Crosby, was not taking this
You almost forgot that hockey, or at least the training camps, started in the summer. Almost. You were reminded when you saw the duo of Jake Gardiner and Morgan Rielly jogging in the park you were walking through. You quickly turned the other way and started walking faster, hoping to avoid them. You felt bad because you were once friends with the two but it just felt awkward now since the only thing you had in common was Auston.
Luck, however, was not on your side.
As it turns out Jake and Mo were able to run faster than you could walk. The two almost passed you but Morgan recognized you when he turned around to tell Jake to catch up.
“Hey Y/N!” Mo shouted, waving hello.
You couldn’t help but smile at Mo’s cheery personality. Jake also stopped to wave. You ended up walking towards them and making small talk with the two. It was going great until Jake brought up your ex.
“Auston’s missed you.”
Your smile faltered and you looked down at your feet. Somehow they became more interesting than the conversation.
“Dude,” Mo started, “not cool.”
“Well it’s true! He’s been in a weird place ever since y/n sent him that text. Besides, I was tired of talking about the nice weather we’ve been having lately.” Jake exclaimed.
“It’s fine you guys. It’s been almost a year since we broke up. And the text was nothing. To be honest I didn’t think he would see it, I just figured everyone would be trying to tell him congrats.” You stated, finally looking back up.
“Well, he saw it”
“Pretty sure she already knew that, you dingus” Mo teased Jake.
All three of you were smiling and laughing. It didn’t last very long, however, because pretty soon your smile dropped. Across the park you saw Freddie and Auston jogging on the path.
You’ve got to be kidding me you thought.
Morgan and Jake had sheepish looks on their faces. “I guess we forgot to tell you the whole team is here working out?”
“Thanks guys” you deadpanned.
By the time you looked back to see where Auston was, it was too late. Auston and Freddie were jogging straight towards you when the two stopped to let Freddie tie his shoe. The Arizona boy was looking at his surroundings when he finally spotted you next to his teammates. He was shocked and confused but still made his way towards you.
You gave a soft smile. “Hey Auston.”
“So, what have you been up to?” He asked, fiddling with his fingers.
You sighed, you hated that you had to make small talk. It just didn’t feel right with Auston.
“Just getting ready to go back to school. Training for another Stanley Cup season I’m guessing?” You asked.
There was a few seconds of awkward silence, with you looking at you feet and Auston rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet.
“I should go–” “I miss you”
You really shouldn’t have been surprised. Jake had told you this earlier but hearing it come from Auston made it more real and more heartbreaking.
“Aus, please don’t say that. Not right now.”
“Why not? It’s true.”
“Because,” you started, “you broke up with me. It’s not fair that you can say that and expect me to feel that same way.”
“Well it’s not fair that you can text me out of the blue or use that nickname without me reacting. What I did was absolutely wrong and I regret all of it, I swear.”
“But it worked. You were more focused on hockey and it ended up great. Stanley Cup champs if I may add.”
“But what, Aus?” You asked, raising your voice a little.
“But it was awfully lonely.”
“Well, that was your fault.”
“I know, but could we maybe try again?”
You froze. You weren’t expecting this at all.
“Or not. That’s, um, that’s okay too.” Auston looked down in defeat.
You thought about it. You did miss him but you didn’t know if you wanted to be in a relationship at the moment. Would it be worth it? Or would he just hurt you again?
“Hey,” Auston looked up at the sound of your voice, “maybe we can just be friends for right now okay?”
Auston smiled, “Friends it is.”
The two of you talked for a while before you decided it was time to leave. You started to walk away when you called out to him, “Hey Aus, tell Mo to wipe that smile off his face. He may have won the Cup last year but he needs to stay focused if he wants to win it again.”
Auston smiled and jogged back to the group of smiley Leafs players, which seemed to have grown since you last looked back at them.
Maybe you could get used to seeing them again, without all the small talk.
