1. The Quest – This motif describes the search for someone or some talisman which, when found and brought back, will restore fertility to a wasted land, the desolation of which is mirrored by a leader’s illness and disability.
2. The Task – This refers to a possibly superhuman feat that must be accomplished in order to fulfill the ultimate goal.
3. The Journey – The journey sends the hero in search for some truth of information necessary to restore fertility, justice, and/or harmony to the kingdom. The journey includes the series of trials and tribulations the hero faces along the way. Usually the hero descends into a real or psychological hell and is forced to discover the blackest truths, quite often concerning his faults. Once the hero is at this lowest level, he must accept personal responsibility to return to the world of the living.
4. The Initiation – This situation refers to a moment, usually psychological, in which an individual comes into maturity. He or she gains a new awareness into the nature of circumstances and problems and understands his or her responsibility for trying to resolve the dilemma. Typically, a hero receives a calling, a message or signal that he or she must make sacrifices and become responsible for getting involved in the problem. Often a hero will deny and question the calling and ultimately, in the initiation, will accept responsibility.
5. The Ritual – Not to be confused with the initiation, the ritual refers to an organized ceremony that involves honored members of a given community and an Initiate. This situation officially brings the young man or woman into the realm of the community’s adult world.
6. The Fall – Not to be confused with the awareness in the initiation, this archetype describes a descent in action from a higher to a lower state of being, an experience which might involve defilement, moral imperfection, and/or loss of innocence. This fall is often accompanied by expulsion from a kind of paradise as penalty for disobedience and/or moral transgression.
7. Death and Rebirth – The most common of all situational archetypes, this motif grows out of the parallel between the cycle of nature and the cycle of life. It refers to those situations in which someone or something, concrete and/or metaphysical dies, yet is accompanied by some sign of birth or rebirth.
8. Nature vs. Mechanistic World – Expressed in its simplest form, this refers to situations which suggest that nature is good whereas the forces of technology are bad.
9. Battle Between Good and Evil – These situations pit obvious forces which represent good and evil against one another; typically, good ultimately triumphs over evil despite great odds.
10. The Unhealable Wound – This wound, physical or psychological, cannot be healed fully. This would also indicate a loss of innocence or purity. Often the wounds’ pain drives the sufferer to desperate measures of madness.
11. The Magic Weapon – Sometimes connected with the task, this refers to a skilled individual hero’s ability to use a piece of technology in order to combat evil, continue a journey, or to prove his or her identity as a chosen individual.
12. Father-Son Conflict – Tension often results from separation during childhood or from an external source when the individuals meet as men and where the mentor often has a higher place in the affections of the hero than the natural parent. Sometimes the conflict is resolved in atonement.
13. Innate Wisdom vs. Educated Stupidity – Some characters exhibit wisdom and understanding intuitively as opposed to those supposedly in charge.
1. Light vs. Darkness – Light usually suggests hope, renewal, OR intellectual illumination; darkness implies the unknown, ignorance, or despair.
2. Water vs. Desert – Because water is necessary to life and growth, it commonly appears as a birth or rebirth symbol. Water is used in baptism services, which solemnizes spiritual births. Similarly, the appearance of rain in a work of literature can suggest a character’s spiritual birth.
3. Heaven vs. Hell – Humanity has traditionally associated parts of the universe not accessible to it with the dwelling places of the primordial forces that govern its world. The skies and mountaintops house its gods; the bowels of the earth contain the diabolic forces that inhabit its universe.
4. Haven vs. Wilderness – Places of safety contrast sharply against the dangerous wilderness. Heroes are often sheltered for a time to regain health and resources.
5. Supernatural Intervention – The gods intervene on the side of the hero or sometimes against him.
6. Fire vs. Ice – Fire represents knowledge, light, life, and rebirth while ice like desert represents ignorance, darkness, sterility, and death.

1. The Hero – In its simplest form, this character is the one ultimately who may fulfill a necessary task and who will restore fertility, harmony, and/or justice to a community. The hero character is the one who typically experiences an initiation, who goes the community’s ritual (s), et cetera. Often he or she will embody characteristics of YOUNG PERSON FROM THE PROVINCES, INITIATE, INNATE WISDOM, PUPIL, and SON.
2. Young Person from the Provinces – This hero is taken away as an infant or youth and raised by strangers. He or she later returns home as a stranger and able to recognize new problems and new solutions.
3. The Initiates – These are young heroes who, prior to the quest, must endure some training and ritual. They are usually innocent at this stage.
4. Mentors – These individuals serve as teachers or counselors to the initiates. Sometimes they work as role models and often serve as father or mother figure. They teach by example the skills necessary to survive the journey and quest.
5. Hunting Group of Companions – These loyal companions are willing to face any number of perils in order to be together.
6. Loyal Retainers – These individuals are like the noble sidekicks to the hero. Their duty is to protect the hero. Often the retainer reflects the hero’s nobility.
7. Friendly Beast –These animals assist the hero and reflect that nature is on the hero’s side.
8. The Devil Figure – This character represents evil incarnate. He or she may offer worldly goods, fame, or knowledge to the protagonist in exchange for possession of the soul or integrity. This figure’s main aim is to oppose the hero in his or her quest.
9. The Evil Figure with the Ultimately Good Heart – This redeemable devil figure (or servant to the devil figure) is saved by the hero’s nobility or good heart.
10. The Scapegoat – An animal or more usually a human whose death, often in a public ceremony, excuses some taint or sin that has been visited upon the community. This death often makes theme more powerful force to the hero.
11. The Outcast – This figure is banished from a community for some crime (real or imagined). The outcast is usually destined to become a wanderer.
12. The Earth Mother – This character is symbolic of fulfillment, abundance, and fertility; offers spiritual and emotional nourishment to those who she contacts; often depicted in earth colors, with large breasts and hips.
13. The Temptress – Characterized by sensuous beauty, she is one whose physical attraction may bring about the hero’s downfall.
14. The Platonic Ideal – This source of inspiration often is a physical and spiritual ideal for whom the hero has an intellectual rather than physical attraction.
15. The Unfaithful Wife – This woman, married to a man she sees as dull or distant, is attracted to a more virile or interesting man.
16. The Damsel in Distress – This vulnerable woman must be rescued by the hero. She also may be used as a trap, by an evil figure, to ensnare the hero.
17. The Star-Crossed Lovers – These two characters are engaged in a love affair that is fated to end in tragedy for one or both due to the disapproval of society, friends, family, or the gods.
18. The Creature of Nightmare – This monster, physical or abstract, is summoned from the deepest, darkest parts of the human psyche to threaten the lives of the hero/heroine. Often it is a perversion or desecration of the human body.
The following list of patterns comes from the book How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster who teaches at the University of Michigan. If you are serious about literary analysis, then it is highly recommended that you buy this book. It goes into detail what is just briefly mentioned and is written in such a lively, witty voice that it does not read like a textbook at all! It will be well worth your time and effort to read it.
Ø Trips tend to become quests to discover self.
Ø Meals together tend to be acts of communion/community or isolation.
Ø Ghosts, vampires, monsters, and nasty people and sometimes simply the antagonists are not about supernatural brew-ha-ha; they tend to depict some sort of exploitation.

Little segment filmed at WonderCon where Brian quizzed CR cosplayers with a variety of trivia questions, including, of course, “What is Scanlan’s mother’s name?”
Travis abandoned the party four times in this episode. (everyone starts singing “True Colors”) The word “sausage” was uttered seven times, and the word “spaghetti” five times.
Brian brings a picture of himself as a teenager to make everyone feel better about their own pictures that’ve been circulating since the episode. Travis: “Is that sharpie on your chin?”
Liam started planning this game before Stranger Things came out, so it was a bit more inspired by “It”.
A long time ago, Liam sent pictures of himself as a teenager to everyone in the text thread and they all responded by sending their own childhood/teen pictures back to him, but he couldn’t find that thread when he was setting up the oneshot. He had excellent one-line notes he sent to the artist for each of them.
Travis: “I might’ve tried to fight something, but I had no weapons. I had an inhaler.”
Liam: “I felt like I balanced it really well with a party of level ones and a demogorgon.”
The oldest kids in the game were the youngest IRL; it was just a switch.
Brian asks how intimidating it was to have Matt as a player. “Answer your question as though he weren’t sitting to my left in pajama pants.”
Kid!Liam was the dead body under the tree. The old man was also Liam. The idea was that Liam kept trying to be there with them through the dimensional shift, but there was already one Liam in that particular time, so squish.
One of the few places where there could’ve been a big divergence in the plot was if they’d managed to sneak up on old man Liam–he would’ve traveled with them.
Liam to Marisha: “Oldest or youngest, you’re still the toughest motherfucker in this group.”
Travis running away throughout the episode was true to life: he ran out of The Neverending Story, Jurassic Park, wouldn’t ride roller coasters, and didn’t see an R-rated movie until he was like 15. Marisha mentions that his reactions at Horror Nights are worth the price of admission.
Everyone got to pick their classes for the oneshot. Ashley picked rogue because it felt like what she would’ve been like IRL. Liam: “But you surprised us all and smeared yourself in blood and gore and screamed at the devil.” Everyone agrees that there may have been a multiclass there.
Unexpected things on Liam’s end: wasn’t expecting Ashley to be as metal as she was. Wasn’t expecting all the bowing to Satan. He wants to keep some of it ambiguous, but the group didn’t behave exactly the way he thought they would at the end.
The crew was in on the last five seconds, but the lead-up defined what those last five seconds would mean. He’d thought about continuing the metaverse thing indefinitely, but with the way it wound up ending, he thought it was a pretty satisfying finale.
Marisha: “I’m an utter dumbass–” Ashley: “No, you’re not!” Long pause. Marisha, turning to Travis: “I’m an utter dumbass–” Travis: “Yes, you are.”
Ashley and her best friend put a full bottle of dish soap in the fountain outside the courthouse in Burbank. It bubbled up way more than they expected and was on the news. That was the tamest story she could tell from her teenage years.
Liam randomly selected which of them would die first in the demogorgon fight.
Brian asks Matt whether experiencing a TPK as a character made him less inclined to possibly cause a TPK with the main campaign. Matt, offscreen: “No.”
Marisha has a new tattoo on her wrist that’s the death saving throws indicator from the 5e character sheets.
Liam describing Marisha’s reaction to being squished: “It was like seven stages of grief… and then the bird over and over again.”
Liam got ideas from Neil Druckmann
for specific lines to use to mess with Ashley.
It was a little over 20 minutes total of the speak-and-spell voice. Liam knew going in that Travis in particular would just lose it, which made it easier to slip in the more intense stuff. He’d had a lingering cough for a few weeks and was worried he wouldn’t be able to do the voice because he knew the scene wouldn’t quite have the same sort of tragicomic punch without it.
The crew was cued in on the phrase “Are you guys ready to play?” at the end.
Everyone agrees that they would’ve been good friends had they met as kids.
Liam on advice for new DMs who are nervous about trying something really off-the-wall. “If you’re scared of something, that’s what you should be moving towards.” Liam missed a window to say something to someone he lost last year, and so this game was his chance to come right out and say what he wanted to say most to these people.
Brian talks about Critical Role has always been about choosing your own family, and how that really shone through in the one-shot. “It was brilliant storytelling and execution… and executions.”
Talks Machine in the dark:
Liam first did the speak-and-spell voice when he was eight or nine years old. His son can do it, too. Travis tries to do it and goes a little Wookie instead.
As a ranger, Travis would have an otter companion because he loves otters so much. Everyone immediately reenacts the cute otter videos they’ve seen.
A Youtube ad for cheese dippers starts playing on the screen with the fireplace. Chaos ensues.
Marisha has a lot of dreams of the cast getting caught in a tsunami or a flood. Liam and Ashley have both dreamt of the cast just playing D&D.
At the next charity stream, Brian will let the cast decide what he should wear for an episode of Talks Machina.
Liam on Sam vs. Matt’s respective Vicious Mockeries: “Sam’s are more dopey zingers, and Matt’s… made me really feel bad.”
Everyone likes pineapple on pizza except for Marisha and Brian.
In terms of fighting classic horror-genre movie baddies, Ashley and Liam want to fight Xenomorphs, Travis wants to fight Freddy, Marisha wants to fight It.
1: Denial (the “I’m just crazy/making stuff up” stage)
2: Pain (“what does this historically arrested symbol even mean in this context, though?”, frustration tears)
3: Bargaining (“if I have one more weirdly legit interaction, then, and only then will I approach this deity”

Another MGIT story. The author is thrown into DA with her favorite OC, Elizabeth Trevelyan. Expecting her and Cullen to fall in love, she eagerly awaits for them to kiss, only to find that Cullen has his eyes on someone else’s lips. Incomplete.
The advisors and Inquisitor head to Antiva, only to get thrown into an evil Court Mage’s cynical plot. At least, that’s what Cullen thinks. Apparently, everyone else is just blind, especially the Inquisitor, whom he hates, and totally doesn’t want to bang. Incomplete.
An AU where the Inquisitor gets killed by a lackey of Samson’s, who happens to magically end up with the mark. Watching a mage fall to red lyrium is something Cullen never thought he would see, and he isn’t sure whether he wants to kill or kiss her. Incomplete.
A Modern AU (sort of) where Cullen gets sent to the real world. Right into Elizabeth’s apartment. They flirt, while also trying not to show everyone that he’s from a place where dragons exist. Incomplete.
Another random idea. Cullen gets thrown into the middle of nowhere, and low and behold, there’s a beautiful mage there that he can’t help but fall for. In a sexual way. But also in a lovey dovey way. Incomplete.
One shot spun into more. Varric tries to push Liz and Cullen together, only to find that they are more stubborn than he thought. Yet they learn, through trial and error, that maybe being stubborn isn’t so fun after all. Incomplete.

I never have considered myself a writer, and still don’t, but a million is a frick ton of words. That doesn’t even count the stuff I’ve deleted, rewritten, or the 73 WIP’s I currently have.
Listen my little chicks, my ducks, my darlings: Tumblr mom is fine. This is my life and I am used to it. Admitedly still going through the seven stages of grief over donuts, but that’s to be expected.
The reason I have been talking about this so much and so openly is not because things are worse, but because I have been told by several (hundred) people that it has helped them not only realize the nameless thing they have been suffering with their whole life and just thought was normal for them was actually an allergy, but also from other people with long term illnesses who didn’t realize the corelation between their chronic illness and food intolerances/issues–and neither did their doctors.
I’ve had people telling me that they recognized their own symptoms in the things I talk about, take themselves off to an allergist and find out, oh hey, I’m actually allergic to XYZ and it’s impacting my health I should stop doing that. I’ve had people thanking me cause they didn’t realize the synthetic scent in their gods damned fabric softener was triggering an allergy which manifested in anxiety attacks. I’ve had people tell me they didn’t realize the chemical dye/bleach in their menstrual products were actually the cause of excess discomfort at their time of the month and since switching to the brands I recommend, have had not only less skin irritations, but less infections like thrush and bv. I had someone tell me they figured out their kid wasn’t allergic to their dog but the egg used in the dog’s food brand, so everytime the kid got licked they’d break out in hives. They got to keep their dog, just swapped out the food brand.
I get people telling me on a consistent near daily basis, that me just talking about all this shit, has helped them feel less isolated, less alone with their problems which no one else seems to inderstand. Not even doctors. And I get that, because up until very recently, I also felt the same way. Sometimes I still do.
So if me bitching and griping about being allergic to things like potassium sorbate and trying to explain over and over that yes it is possible to have a rice intolerance, helps people?–I’m gonna keep talking about it.
This has been my life for a while now. Admitedly the last six weeks was awful because I caught that super virus bullshit that wrecked my system. But this? All this food stuff? Has been going on for years . I’m just finally getting a confirmed diagnosis from medical professionals because my symptoms got too bad to ignore.
Now, that said, there will be some people who don’t want to see all this. I get it, shits depressing yo, and you just clicked here for the vampire nipples. In that case I have a tag which I have been using for the last two years which is #chronic health tag. Blacklist it, you won’t see anymore of my posts about health. Everyone’s happy.
And I do mean happy, because as much as all this sucks I’ve got new answers to fit into the puzzle pieces of my health, and there’s a chance that one of these days I might just get to see the whole picture instead of just the corner pieces. And that’s good enough incentive for me to keep going.
So please, don’t worry about me. I’m gonna be fine. One of these days, it’s all gonna be fine.
