Or How Clintasha Could Still Become Canon
So, Age of Ultron implies that Clintasha could never become canon, despite the fact that Romanoff was in the Avengers purely because of three words:
“Barton’s been compromised.”
Or does it?
We all know that Bruce never wanted to fight in the Avengers as Hulk. He went there to help with science only, and later had to fight. I don’t think he’d volunteer to fight as Hulk, even for anything as dangerous as Loki’s scepter.
So how would Nick Fury get him to join? He can’t be threatened, and he could get a well-paid job anywhere, so money isn’t an issue. So, instead, Fury gets Natasha Romanoff to seduce him. After all, we’ve seen her do it before.
When she kissed him then kicked him into the hole?
Classic emotional manipulation.
Furthermore, remember how Natasha described children as the only thing that could be more important than a mission?
Well what if Fury saw Clint and Natasha become best friends, then dangerously close to something more. Fury knows that eventually, if they fall in love, they will leave SHIELD to get married, and maybe even adopt a child or use a surrogate mother. He can’t let that happen.
Let’s also say that he has a family under witness protection, who can never be seen in the world again. After all, Tony, who isn’t exactly stupid, did say that that Clint’s “girlfriend” was an agent.
He threatens Clint that if he and Natasha begin a romantic relationship, he will kill them both. It’s implied that Loki knew about Hydra’s involvement inside SHIELD, so what if Loki found out and made the dig about Barton killing Natasha because Clint killing Natasha is the worst thing both of them could imagine, and if Clint was selfish enough to enter a relationship with Natasha, that’s essentially what he’d be doing.
So Fury forces Clint to introduce Natasha to his “girlfriend” and “kids”, and Natasha’s hopes of a lover and family are crushed. Remember how Barton said that Ultron probably knew more about the Avengers than they knew about each other? Doesn’t that seem odd given how close he and Natasha are?
This only makes sense if he hadn’t told Natasha everything about himself.
So Fury ensures that Bruce stays on the team, and Natasha and Clint remain just friends, because he can’t afford to lose such good agents.
