I had long intended to go on Billgrimage, to visit Cheltenham on Dr Wilson’s birthday, and finally took the opportunity this year.  You can learn all you like about someone from books, but visiting the place they called home, especially when young, can help you understand them in a funny way that any number of facts can’t quite reach.  A visit to Cheltenham town in all its laid-back respectability went some of the way last year, but I had to get up into the green green hills to get the full effect.  It’s not easy to become practically perfect in every way, but it’s probably a little bit easier if you’re carrying somewhere like this in your bones.

1. Wilson’s birthplace (the house his family called home most of his life was across the street, but has been torn down and replaced with a horrendous tower block)
2. St Peter’s Church, Leckhampton, which they attended whilst living up in the hills
3. Memorial mention on his father’s monument
4. Leckhampton Hill and some very happy sheep
5. Basically the Shire
6. Cross-referencing with one of Wilson’s watercolours in Cheltenham in Antarctica.  The hills are not quite right but the town’s spires are aligned correctly.  It was probably painted across the road from this field, but this is where the public footpath was, so …

Wait, what do you mean you "kind of" stole a street sign?

My friends mom stole one several years ago and recently in the last year found it again, and because it was for Peter Pan St and she no longer wanted it I am now the lucky owner of an unwanted once stolen street sign. So, I didn’t actually steal it, but it wasn’t obtained initially by legal means either.

I thought I’d share one more picture from this extraordinary collection that will soon be featured in an exhibition in London. I think some of these fabulous vintage Black people, like boxing champion Peter Jackson, are worthy of their own movie. Where are you Idris Elba? Jamie Foxx? From The Guardian:

“Peter Jackson, December 2, 1889. Born in 1860 in St Croix, then the Danish West Indies, Jackson was a boxing champion who spent long periods of time touring Europe. In England, he staged the famous fight against Jem Smith at the Pelican Club in 1889. In 1888 he claimed the title of Australian heavyweight champion. Photo: Hulton Archive/Getty Images.
