Pope Sage (教皇セージ)
He and his twin Hakurei are the only survivors of the 16th Century Holy War against Hades. They both have a great grudge towards Hypnos and Thanatos, and carefully plan their defeat for more than 200 years.

Sage was the one that trained Cancer Manigoldo and changed his views about death. He also had to face an internal power struggle when Gemini Aspros used his brother Defteros to try and kill him.

Though it has never been stated how he was able to live such a long life, it is mentioned that his resent and a promise to his goddess drove him on all those years, just like his brother.

Hades (ハーデス)
The god of the Underwold in Greek mythology, son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. According to a single famous passage in the Iliad (xv.187–93), Hades and his two brothers, Poseidon and Zeus, drew lots for realms to rule. Zeus got the sky, Poseidon got the seas, and Hades received the underworld, the unseen realm to which the souls of the dead go upon leaving the world as well as any and all things beneath the earth.

In Saint Seiya, he is one of the many gods that challenge Athena in Holy Wars to win control over Earth. Unlike Athena, who reincarnates in a similar looking (human) body every era, and Poseidon, who reincarnates in a descendant of the Solo bloodline, Hades chooses the human with the purest heart as his host. These have included Alone (ND & LC) and Andromeda Shun (SS).

His army consists of 108 Specters, 3 of which are the most powerful and command the rest (Judges), and Pandora, who acts as leader on his behalf. The armor Hades wears is a Surplice, not a God Cloth.

Athena (アテナ)
As in classical mythology, Athena is the goddess of Wisdom and Justice, daughter of Zeus and sister of Artemis and Apollo. In Kurumada’s story, she is reborn on Earth every 250 years, when evil threatens the world, to protect it, restore peace and bring hope. To do so, she counts on the assistance of an army of eighty-eight youths of great strength and courage.

In his manga, Masami Kurumada spelled Athena’s name with the kanji for goddess (女神 Megami) and the furigana Atena (アテナ). Kurumada also spelled her name in Greek using the Attic spelling Ἀθηνᾶ, Athḗnâ. In the anime adaptation, it appeared in the Doric spelling Ἀσάνα, Asána, and as Ἀθάνα, Athánâ, both in the manga and the anime. Both are correct, as they are simply calligraphic variations of the name used in the times of Ancient Greece.

Capricorn Shura (山羊座のシュラ)
In Greek mythology, the constellation is sometimes identified as Amalthea, the goat that suckled the infant Zeus after his mother Rhea saved him from being devoured by his father Cronos. Capricornus is also sometimes identified as Pan, who saved himself from the monster Typhon by giving himself a fish’s tail and diving into a river.

As revealed by Masami Kurumada in vol.12 of his manga, Shura became a Gold Saint at the age of 10. In the anime, he is depicted as one of Athena’s most loyal Saints, while in the manga, he doesn’t really believe in “fighting for a god” per se. It’s only before his death that he regains faith in Athena and remains loyal to her during the Hades arc.

Gemini Saga & Kanon (双子座のサガとカノン)
Although the Gemini Gold Cloth was worn first by Kanon’s twin brother Saga, it recognized both as Saints, as Kurumada explained in vol. 16 of his manga. As they were twins representing the Gemini constellation, both Kanon and Saga were the Gemini Gold Saint, and both were rightful bearers of the Gemini Gold Cloth.

In Greek mythology, Gemini was associated with the myth of Castor and Pollux, the children of Leda and Argonauts both. Pollux was the son of Zeus, who seduced Leda, while Castor was the son of Tyndareus, king of Sparta and Leda’s husband. When Castor died, because he was mortal, Pollux begged his father Zeus to give Castor immortality, and he did, by uniting them together in the heavens.

Scorpio Kardia (蠍座のカルディア)
His name means “heart” in Greek (καρδία) and is the only other known Saint apart from Libra Dohko and Aquarius Krest to receive Misopethamenos. He had a heart condition that only gave him one more year of life. He ran away from the hospital and met Aquarius Krest, who offered him first Athena’s blood and then Misopethamenos to extend his life and allow him more time to live the way he wanted.

Kardia’s goal was always to live and die to the fullest and was able to do so when he battled Wyvern Radamanthys in Atlantis. His unique version of both Scarlet Needle and Antares (Katakeo - to incinerate) infuses heat into the wounds and heart of the enemy.

Teshirogi Shiori mentioned in an interview he likes apples and eats them frequently (shown also in his Gaiden) because Degel told him it was healthy. This is a direct reference to Scorpio Milo, who’s name can be translated to “apple” in Greek.

Celestial Fierce Star Wyvern Radamanthys (天猛星ワイバーンのラダマンティス)
The name Rhadamanthys is the Greek form of Egyptian name Rhotamenti, which means “Judge in the hidden one”. He is, according to Greek mythology, son of Zeus and Europa, and brother to Sarpedon and Minos.

In the Taizen, Kurumada stated his place of birth as Faroe Islands, England. This is a mistake, as these islands have never been English territory, both them and Radamanthys are Danish.

His general design, including his very distinctive unibrow, is the same as that of Southern Cross Khristos, one of Eris’ Ghost Five.

Siren Sorrento (海魔女のソレント)
Sorrento was sent to kill the injured Bronze Saints in the hospital right after the Sanctuary battles. He encountered Taurus Aldebaran, who was sent by Athena to protect them. They manage an impasse and before they begin again, Saori showed up and requested Sorrento to take her to see Julian Solo. Later he would reveal that it was like a gentle command that he could not refuse, a request from a true goddess. He gained great respect for Athena at that moment.

Sorrento was born in Austria, famous for its musical arts and home of many great musicians. Ironically it is also a landlocked country, with no coastline.

Andromeda Shun (アンドロメダ星座の瞬)
Even though he has great strength, Shun has a gentle nature and would rather solve conflicts without having to battle his opponent. This is a recurring characteristic that empahsizes his gentleness, something that even Hades found appealing, considering him the human being with the purest heart.

Shun was initially going to train in the brutal Death Queen’s Island, but his brother Ikki took his place, so he went to Andromeda Island instead. Shun and Ikki are the only known offsping of Mitsumasa Kido who share the same mother.

Phoenix Ikki (鳳凰星座の一輝)
His name can be translate to “Gleam”. Out of the 10 orphans that managed to become Saints, Ikki is regarded as the strongest and more aggressive. Trained in the harsh environment of Death Queen’s Island, and dealing with the trauma of losing someone he loved so dearly (Esmeralda), his cosmos burned with anger, hatred and resentment for a long time.

Though he initially claimed allegiance only to himself, Ikki eventually becomes loyal not only to Athena, but to his brother and friends as well. He believes in them to such extents that he will refuse to help them directly in order to remind them of their own strength and conviction so they can move forward.
