One of the most gifted and most celebrated actresses of Indian cinema, Sridevi would have turned 55 years today.
The leading actress of the 1980s, Sridevi was widely billed as the first female superstar of Hindi cinema, who held sway over audiences in the south as well.
Sridevi started her career as a child actor at the age of four in the 1969 Tamil movie Thunaivan and rose to stardom in south Indian cinema.
As a child actor she made her Bollywood debut in 1975 with the movie Julie and in 1979 she made her debut as a heroine with the movie Solva Sawan. Her performances in films like Sadma, Chaalbaaz, Mr India, Nagina, Chandni and Lamhe won her numerous accolades. Her look in Chandni also turned the actress into a fashion icon.
In the 2012 movie English Vinglish, Sridevi made a triumphant return to films after a 15-year break. Her work was hailed as the ‘performance of the year’ by many critics.
Sridevi died of accidental drowning on 24 February this year in Dubai.
