This Kentucky high school banned dreadlocks, cornrows and twists.

Butler Traditional High School in Louisville, Kentucky shocked some parents when they distributed a dress code that banned students from sporting “dreadlocks, cornrows and twists.” The code also banned extreme hair colors and highlighting on girls and any hair coloring for boys.

Kentucky State Representative-elect Attica Scott slammed the dress code and tweeted out a picture of it. (Above)

“We feel that a student’s academic success is directly correlated to appropriate attire and appearance,” the dress code reads.

The ACLU of Kentucky fired back at the school’s justification with 2 brilliant tweets.

barista au, or, ol needed a distraction.

So I needed a distraction, and I got to thinking about pairings and AUs. You know how that goes.

Concept for a Flintwood barista AU fic:

  • Marcus is a barista. He’s good at his job, and he’s even learned to like it because it gives him extra money for university; even though his parents are helping, he wants to do as much of it on his own as he can, so that they can’t try to make him change his mind on what he’s studying. He wants to qualify as a physiotherapist, and he plays a couple of sports as extra-curriculars.
  • He may not be the best at customer service, but he is the best at actually making the drinks, including inventing specials on the fly that everyone loves. He’ll also take the oddly timed shifts that no one else wants, because he doesn’t mind being awake late and manages better that way.
  • Oliver is a sports science student who has to maintain his grades in order to retain his scholarship and has a good chance of playing football professionally. Despite that, he’s serious about wanting to do well. His flatmates spend more time drunk than they do sober, so he’s given up trying to work at home and finds this little coffee shop to study in.
  • The barista isn’t overly talkative, but he makes the best…everything and there isn’t a single drink that can defeat him. Oliver recognises him from a few late afternoon classes, but they’ve never really interacted much. The place is open until odd hours, and Oliver finds himself staying there later and later.
  • It takes about two months before he sees him really smile properly, instead of small half-smiles. After that, he can’t take his eyes off him, and what the fuck, Wood, he’s probably not single or interested.
  • It makes no difference. When he eventually gets the guy talking for longer during those late nights in between studying, it doesn’t help the impossible crush. In fact, it makes it even worse, because he stops being the anonymous but attractive barista and becomes Marcus, who loves sports as much as Oliver does, has the snarkiest sense of humour going, also has a soft spot for animals of literally any kind and wears worn-in jeans that look so good they should be illegal.
  • In the meantime, Marcus is oblivious. Painfully oblivious. “Wood? The one who sits over there? Yeah, he’s definitely all right looking, if you like that sort of thing. What are you talking about? He’s not flirting with me. Shut up.”
  • Except, Oliver is flirting with him. A lot. They start actually talking when they see each other around the university, too, spending a little time together if they happen to have a class. He tries to tell himself it doesn’t mean as much as it does.
  • It takes Marcus weeks to catch on to the fact that he likes the graceful hint of throat that peeks out of fitted polonecks of thick wool, the tilt of head and the slow curl of smile at lips, the tantalising peek of smooth skin when Oliver stretches that looks good enough to lick, the late-night dishevelment of his hair and the bleary-eyed pre-espresso gaze of the morning.
  • It takes him weeks to understand that he likes how he can share space with Oliver, the coffee shop basically empty late at night apart from the two of them.
  • And let’s not even get into the time that Oliver walks in still in his football kit after a match, all lithe muscle and narrow hips and broad shoulders that are outlined by the keeper’s jersey far too perfectly. He’s still on a high from winning and God, that pleased, slightly smug smile of victory just kills him.
  • Marcus resigns himself to the fact that he’s probably not interested and opts not to do anything about it. But he does things like learn how to make a London Fog, just because Oliver happens to mention he also likes Earl Grey tea as well as normal tea and apparently, every kind of coffee imaginable.
  • Oliver’s eyes light up when he tries it, late one night, deep in the throes of extreme study stress before Christmas and exhausted from trying to juggle everything. And it makes Marcus’ day. He knows he’s in trouble right then. He doesn’t care.
  • He falls asleep over his books at the coffee shop and he looks so much softer when he’s asleep, the energy that’s usually at least partially caffeine-fuelled hidden from view. He has long eyelashes and his head is pillowed on his arms, and there’s dark circles under his eyes that say he hasn’t slept properly in days.
  • Marcus knows he’s gone, that he’s infatuated and it’s reaching the level where it’s dangerously close to pathetic. It only gets worse when he eventually has to wake Oliver up and he gets a sleepy-eyed gaze and a low mumble of “Wha’ time’s it, Marcus?”
  • When he realises that Marcus let him sleep and stayed hours past normal closing time so he could rest, God it’s almost time for the morning shift, he’s embarrassed. “Christ, I’m so sorry, I don’t know what you must think of me…”
  • But then Marcus gently cuts him off. “You looked like you needed the sleep, is what I think. Your flatmates are massive dickheads and you need to stop stressing yourself out so much.”
  • There’s a moment, then. A long, lingering moment where Oliver wants to kiss him, is seconds from doing it, but it’s 6am and the other barista comes in through the door to work the morning shift.
  • Oliver’s never been so annoyed to hear a coffee grinder firing up in his life. Marcus won’t look at him now, instead goes and pulls his coat on and is out of the door before Oliver can even react.
  • The other barista looks up, and smiles at him, only fuelling the annoyance until they speak. “You know, I’m not gonna tell you your business, but he fancies you rotten. Has done for ages. Not sure why you’re still standing here, if I’m honest.”
  • Oliver doesn’t need telling twice and dashes out. Except, as it turns out, Marcus is waiting outside for him, and he nearly walks right into him in his rush to catch up.
  • There’s hesitation in Marcus’ expression, not something he’s used to. “Oliver…? Did I imagine that, in there?” And he’s referring, of course, to that infuriating interruption, to the almost but not quite.
  • “No, you didn’t.”
  • Then they’re kissing and he’s pinning Marcus against the brick of the coffee shop’s outside wall, not giving a toss that the sun isn’t up and it’s bloody freezing and he probably looks like hell, because there’s hands fisting into his jumper and the Christ almighty perfect heat of Marcus’ mouth fitted against his to keep him warm.

Would anyone be interested in reading the full-length fic, if I did it?
