Moffat Era Rewatch: A Good Man Goes to War

Demons run when a good man goes to war…

Warning: Spoilers Sweetie

  • Who is the good man of the title? Is it the Doctor or Rory? The Doctor doesn’t consider himself a good man so it has to be Rory, right?
  • Hello Melody Pond, whose name is a pretty big give away of who you really are.
  • They’re doing the thing where you think she’s talking about the Doctor but its Rory. As I said before I don’t like that and I’m glad they pretty much stop doing it after this episode.
  • Hello Lorna Bucket.
  • These Cybermen don’t have the Cybus logo so this is the first time in NuWho we see the Cybermen for this universe.
  • Hello Rory, or to give him his full name Roranicus Badassius.
  • “What is the Doctor’s message?” KABOOM!!!!
  • And here’s my favourite human/lizard lesbian couple. I’m still a little bitter that they never got a spin-off. Instead we got Class
  • Vastra catching Jack the Ripper and eating him is what we should teach in history. Far more satisfying than “He was never caught”
  • Love this mixture of Napoleonic uniforms with laser guns.
  • “Did someone call for a nurse?” And here is everyone’s favourite violent potato/healthcare professional.
  • For River, prison was just a place to grab a shower and get changed.
  • “The Doctor took me ice skating on the River Thames in 1814, the last of the great Frost Fairs. He got Stevie Wonder to sing for me under London Bridge.” They should’ve had some of the extras in ‘Thin Ice’ singing Stevie Wonder songs and confusing the hell out of Bill.
  • Confirmation that River totally had a threesome with the Doctor.
  • This episode make no effort to explain who the bad guys are or why they are doing this. Moffat was saving all of that for later.
  • This is the story about the legend of the Doctor and what it means to various people so it was a smart move to holds of revealing him for most of the episode, instead letting us hear all the other characters tell stories about him.
  • So they are really headless then.
  • “Amelia Pond! Get your coat!”
  • One of the things I love so much about Vastra and Jenny is their impeccable sense of style.
  • “Run away. I want you to be famous for those exact words. I want people to call you Colonel Run Away. I want children laughing outside your door, because they’ve found the house of Colonel Run Away. And, when people come to you, and ask if trying to get to me through the people I love is in any way a good idea, I want you to tell them your name. Oh, look, I’m angry. That’s new. I’m really not sure what’s going to happen now.” I get goosebumps whenever we see that sliver of ice in Eleven’s hearts.
  • “Now, Mrs Williams, that is never, ever going to happen.” *Shipper tears*
  • The Doctor just pointed and laughed at an archaeologist.
  • Melody Pond is most definitely a superhero.
  • Not even a year old and she’s already making fun of his dress sense.
  • Awww, the Doctor’s cot.
  • Don’t ask about the Doctors family, Amy. Like his name, it is one of those mysteries the show will never ever answer.
  • “That anger is always the shortest distance to a mistake.” I’ve always loved Vastra friendship with the Doctor. She is one of few people that is completely unafraid to call him out on his bullshit or tell it like it is.
  • “He’s not a warrior.” “Then why is he called the Doctor?”
  • Let’s talk about sex, baby.
  • “No! No! Impossible! It’s all running about, sexy fish vampires and blowing up stuff. And Rory wasn’t even there at the beginning. Then he was dead, then he didn’t exist, then he was plastic. Then I had to reboot the whole universe. Long story. So, technically the first time they were on the Tardis together in this version of reality, was on their w…” And now we know the real reason the episode was called “The Big Bang”.
  • “Why would a Time Lord be a weapon?” "Well, they’ve seen you.” “Me?” Matt’s acting here is just amazing.
  • This has to be the most decapitations in an single episode of Doctor Who
  • "Oh, Doctor. Fooling you once was a joy, but fooling you twice the same way? It’s a privilege."
  • “Demons run when a good man goes to war. Night will fall and drown the sun, when a good man goes to war. Friendship dies and true love lies, night will fall and the dark will rise, when a good man goes to war. Demons run but count the cost. The battle’s won, but the child is lost.”
  • Amy’s scream here always sends chills down my spine.
  • Stop being such a drama queen, Strax. It’s probably just a scratch.
  • “I remember everyone.” Did he really remember her or was that just a comforting lie?
  • “This was exactly you. All this. All of it. You make them so afraid. When you began, all those years ago, sailing off to see the universe, did you ever think you’d become this? The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name. Doctor. The word for healer and wise man throughout the universe. We get that word from you, you know. But if you carry on the way you are, what might that word come to mean? To the people of the Gamma Forests, the word Doctor means mighty warrior. How far you’ve come. And now they’ve taken a child, the child of your best friends, and they’re going to turn her into a weapon just to bring you down. And all this, my love, in fear of you.” I love this entire speech. Someone needed to say this to him a long time ago.
  • Oh god, their faces when he finally realises.
  • “But you and I, we, we, we, er *makes kiss kiss noises*” "Yes.” I love how he is both ridiculously excited by this and worried terribly about what Amy and Rory will do to him for kissing their daughter.
  • Can’t help noticing how he never promises to return Amy and Rory’s daughter to them.
  • “I’m your daughter” All the River reveals were in a way a little anticlimactic, but that doesn’t bother me because I was never too invested in the mystery side of her story.

13x01 Lens Flares

One of my favorite things in this episode was the use of lens flares. There is a reason that the scenes with lens flares were filmed outside on a sunny day that doesn’t really fit the mood of the episode. Lens flares are created by a bright light, especially sunlight, hitting the front of a camera lens and bouncing off different lens elements inside the lens.

You can prevent stray light from hitting the front of the lens by using a hood. Every camera filming outside is going to have a hood. Probably one that adjusts for the field of view and focal length. Here is an example of a camera on the set of Supernatural with a hood.

It would be very difficult to get lens flares on accident with a hood. It can and does happen but if you don’t want them you can make adjustments and reshoot the scene. Higher end lenses also make lens flares more difficult so when a director wants this effect sometimes a filter is used or a cheep lens.

This particular flare is called a “veiling flare” and it takes place when the source of light is out of frame but the light is still hitting the front of the lens. Some people have suspected that this was added in later. I think there is a natural lens flare here that was edited later to show different colors. But this was originally produced using sunlight. When Sam asks about Cas. Cas shows up as a ray of sun over Deans face. The colors are definitely edited in no one can excuse this as a coincidence like they might excuse Dean’s bi shirt or other props with bi colors. Naturally this flare was probably white-light yellow. Like this.

Someone had to go in later to change the colors to bi flag color. If they wanted just a lens flare they wouldn’t have colored it.

This is another important lens flare that happens during Dean’s prayer. This one looks like it could be completely natural.  This could be another sign from tptb that Dean is not straight but I don’t think it is.  Dean is talking to God. Talking about how he lost his everything. His whole world you could say.  Everyone knows the story of Noah’s ark where God destroys the earth with a flood and makes a rainbow afterwards.

11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. - Genesis 9: 11-13

I think this could be a promise from God that Dean will not have to go through this again. Dean won’t have to see his everything destroyed ever again. I know that Dean thinks Chuck didn’t answer him but I am wondering if he actually did.
