For one thing, it’s important to understand which groups have been mocked for their accents and which to stay away from. For starters, be careful to avoid racist minstrel-type speech for Southern Black characters (e.g. “Dem cakes sho am sweet!”) and exaggerated parodies of East Asian accents (e.g. “Sollee, no washee,” et cetera.) Basically, respecting your audience remains a priority.
You can still portray their dialects (The Help, for instance, is really good at realistically capturing the different dialects of the characters) but exaggerating them can easily come off as racist and mocking, particularly in conjecture with the history of the groups in question.
Similarly, when writing accents, it’s important to avoid dehumanizing the characters: exaggerated depictions of their accents can easily translate to a condescending, “the way I talk is normal and yours isn’t” type message.
I, for instance, have a character who has a thick Mongolian accent. I handle this by mentioning that he has a thick Mongolian accent, and then showing his slightly different dialect (little to no contractions, some grammatical errors, etc.)
But he wouldn’t say, for instance, “Eet ees a pleasure to meat you, sir;” he would say, “It is a pleasure to meet you sir.”
Similarly, several of my characters have Southern dialects (particularly in my newest manuscript, which takes place in the Southwest.) They’re a lot of fun to portray, but the reader can still get the full affect without exaggerating the speaker’s accent:
“It’s okay,” will become “s’okay,” “It’s not,” will become “s’not,” et cetera. “Ain’t” is used as casual as “isn’t,” “y’all” is used in place of “you guys,” and double negatives are a social acceptability. Paying attention to idiosyncrasies of dialect such as these tends to be much more effective than bombarding the audience with warped syllables and Southern twang.
Obviously, this merits a lot more discussion (and maybe a post all it’s own at some point) but for now, I’m going to say ‘yay’ – provided it’s done tentatively and thoughtfully.
This is one of the more maddening videos I’ve seen in awhile. Absolutely horrifying. Not only are these people totally insane, just chanting and preventing discussion, they also tried to assault someone. After the attempted assault, they even had backup to lie about it for them. It was on video, you fucking dipshit. I hope you get charged.
I’m not certain, but I believe Shoe0nhead named the liar “Dinsee Nuffin”. A very fitting name, if you ask me.
Still June 2016: Lauren Southern tries to report on BREXIT protest (I assume), gets physically removed by anti-fascists people in hoods and masks concealing their identities who steal her horribly racist Union Jack hat. Then some lady (who looks Southeast Asian) blames her for provoking people with a hat and accuses her of trolling. Police lecture her for “escalating”.
What is it with the regressive left and hating hot blonde white conservative ladies? And hats?
