Summary: A late night/early morning conversation with his best friend makes Luke fall back into his old ways.
Pairing: Luke x Female Reader
A/N: This is actually the crappiest thing I’ve written but in my defense I just did a shit ton of homework and it’s very early so my brain is fried. Don’t be surprised if I delete and repost this tomorrow with a much better version.

It was the final few minutes before the sun peeked over the horizon and Luke could see the sky starting to change colors from Y/N’s window. His eyelids drooped slightly, but he kept himself awake as he listened to Y/N talking beside him, something about how her boyfriend forgot her birthday for the second year in a row. Luke thought it was funny, since they had only been dating for two years, but he kept silent. His eyes shifted from the window to his best friend, watching the way her lips moved when she spoke, or how the same strand of hair would fall into her eyes so frequently that she didn’t bother moving it anymore.
“Luke?” Y/N asked, turning her head to face the tall blonde beside her. Luke snapped out of his trance. “Hmm?” He mumbled in response.
There was a brief silence before Y/N started talking again. “Do you think you and I could’ve been a thing?”
Luke thought about it. He thought about the upperclass years of high school, when he had such a hopeless crush on Y/N. He knew that she liked him too, but he wasted his chance with her. He waited too long to make a move and had to suffer through her relationships, seeing how happy she looked without him. Luke knew he could make her happier, but Y/N didn’t feel the same way anymore.
“Yeah,” Luke replied, staring up at the stick-on stars on her ceiling. “Yeah, we could have.”
“What do you think our lives would be like if we did?” Y/N asked again, snuggling into Luke’s hoodie that sat beside her on the carpet. Luke started thinking again.
“I think you wouldn’t be talking to me now. You would’ve dumped me within the first month and you would hate my guts,” Luke chuckled. “I think it’s a good thing we didn’t. I don’t want you to hate me, Y/N. You’re too important to me.”
“You’re important to me, too,” Y/N agreed, sitting up from the carpet and stretching her achy limbs. She moved closer to Luke, laying back down and resting her head on his chest. Luke instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist.
“We would’ve been pretty damn cute, though,” Y/N giggled, looking up at Luke with a playful smirk.
Luke looked down at Y/N, seeing her lips barely centimeters from his own. Her hair fell lazily in her face and her eyes were visibly exhausted, but still beautiful. For the first time in years, his heart felt light and airy in his chest. Fuck.
