You were the youngest of the adults and today was your birthday. You smiled to yourself thinking what all your friends would’ve done for you. The craziness that would’ve taken place just for your celebration…
Sadness quickly washed over you.
Today was just like any other day at camp. Surrounded by strangers, struggling to survive and sleeping in a very uncomfortable tent.
You sighed deciding to go out for some air. A short walk away from everyone wouldn’t hurt.
“Rick! Gonna go out out back a few minutes. I’ll be back soon.” You let him know before walking away.
“Don’t go too far!” He shouted back before looking at Daryl.
“Keep an eye on her.” Rick muttered.
Daryl nodded, grabbed his crossbow and quietly followed you leaving a good amount of distance between the two of you. Daryl was like Ricks side kick making sure everyone was together and safe, but you never really spoke much to him.
You walked, climbing over a rock when you spotted something small from afar.
“A dog?” You whispered with a gasp. You loved dogs.
“Come here little guy!” You whispered quietly but quickly following it.
“The hell she doin’?” Daryl mumbled following you behind.
Finally the dog stopped running away and turned to look at you. You laughed when it suddenly ran up to you.
“Awww hi! What’s your name little one?” You giggled checking his tag that read “Peanut.”
“Peanut! I like it.” The dog licked you happily as Daryl continued to watch from afar.
Daryl crouched down against a tree keeping track of both of your surroundings.
“Well this is a better birthday than I imagined.” You continued to laugh as Daryl looked up at you catching what you said.
“Thanks for making my birthday a little better, Peanut.”
He could hear the sadness in your voice as you pet the dog. He wondered why you didn’t say anything to anyone but then he remembered how he did the same exact thing on his birthday. It passed a few weeks ago and no one knew a thing. What was the point? Plus he was used to no one ever giving a crap with his family never around. It didn’t matter to him much, at least that’s what he’d tell himself every year.
“Come on, let’s take you back to camp. I bet you’re hungry aren’t you?” You kissed the dogs head and turned back heading to where everyone was. Daryl hid behind a tree not wanting you to see him and soon followed.
“What the hell is this, another mouth to feed?!” Shane yelled at the sight of the small dog following you inside the camp. The children quickly ran to it cheering excitedly as they pet it.
“It’s harmless.” Rick responded as you smiled at the kids. He looked up to find Daryl coming out of the woods himself with a look on his face. But Daryl quickly looked away and headed to his tent.
“Can we stay with Peanut, Lucy?” Carl and Sofia asked.
“Of course, take good care of him.” You smiled before heading back to your spot.
“Hey.” You suddenly heard a voice come out of a tent. You bent over to find Daryl laying back with a book flat on his chest.
You didn’t know whether to smile or to be confused.
“I heard ya.” He sat up looking up at you.
“You followed me?” You asked confused.
“I keep an eye on things around here. So yeah, made sure you was safe.” He looked down as you smiled.
“Well ya gonna sit and have a beer with me or ya just gonna look at me?” He squinted looking back up at you.
“A beer?” You asked confused at his offer. It wasn’t like Daryl to be this way, at least not that you knew of.
“It’s your birthday, ain’t it?”
“Well then come on already. Sheesh.”
You laughed as you sat beside him. He popped open a beer with his teeth and handed you one while he opened another for himself.
“So how come ya ain’t say anything?” He asked looking over at you.
“I don’t know..I mean all the stuff we have going on. Didn’t seem important you know?” You took a sip of your beer.
“I felt the same…shit it’s always been like that for me.” He shrugged.
“When was your birthday?” You asked curiously.
“Two weeks ago. Felt like any other day to me..always did.” He muttered looking away remembering the days as a kid how his father would be knocked out drunk on the floor. His mom would forget and his brother Merle just wasn’t around.
“Well happy birthday, Daryl.” You whispered making him quickly look your way. You almost saw his blue eyes light up. It had been a while since he heard that. But he quickly toughened up and acted like he didn’t care.
“It don’t matter. Just another year older.” He looked away taking another sip but you were too smart to smart to fall for that act.
“Still your birthday, Daryl. We should celebrate it together.”
“Yeah and do what? Throw a damn party?” He scoffed.
“No. Just be here together. Enjoying our beers and each others company. I may sound stupid but..besides the dog you made my birthday today.” He looked your way and pressed his lips together remaining silent before taking another sip.
Daryl was a sweet guy who you believed deserved way more credit than he received. Unexpectedly you reached forward and kissed him lightly on the cheek. You smiled to yourself noticing he turned a bright red.
“What ya do that for?” He whispered.
“For wishing me a happy birthday.”
A smile appeared on his face, something that come to think of it you didn’t think you ever saw before.
“So I guess I should give ya one in return for wishing me a happy birthday or whatever, right?”
You were surprised by his response but you didn’t mind it.
“I’d like that.” You giggled softly. You turned your face for him to kiss your cheek and felt him come close, his breath heavy on you when he suddenly turned your face to him and kissed your lips.
Your eyes widened as he kissed you softly and you felt him pull you in closer. You closed your eyes and enjoyed the sensual feeling he gave you when you pulled back.
“What’s wrong?” He whispered as he remained staring at your lips.
“Nothing I just..I didn’t expect that.” You smiled.
“Couldn’t help myself.” He responded before pulling you in for another kiss when Peanut suddenly ran inside jumping on the two of you. You screamed in laughter as the dog licked you with excitement.
“Gonna make me jealous, Peanut.”
He whispered with a smirk.
“Sorry Lucy! He wanted to see you!” Carl and Sofia ran to pick the dog up and ran off.
The two of you remained laughing, quietly calming down.
“Ya want another beer?” He asked you hoping you’d say yes, he didn’t want you to leave.
Daryl popped them both open and handed you another.
“To your birthday.” He uttered lifting the beer high.
“To our birthdays.” You smiled lifting yours up before the two of you let them clash together softly.
