sorry her lot

Most of us guessed that Navy would end up betraying everyone by the end of the episode. 

I don’t think most of us expected that having her go from this:

to this:

would be really good for Lapis’ mental health.

And despite certain people’s fears about certain story boarders… this was actually very much in character for her. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that Lapis has always been cynical, even in her pre mirror days. After she escaped she went from cynical to detached and apathetic. Not an unexpected defense mechanism for someone who was trapped in an inanimate object for 6,000 years. But she has made progress. She trusts Steven and Peridot. Enough not only to express her concerns, but to essentially make a confession.

Life on Earth is really confusing. It took me a long time to get use to it. I’m still getting use to it.

Given everything that’s happened to her on Earth, it’s only natural that she’s having a hard time adjusting. But she’s just confessed her biggest insecurity: she knows she’s having a hard time dealing with what she’s been through, while having to get use to to living a normal life on the planet where her greatest traumas happened. Before the rebellion she would have done her job and left for the next planet, Earth having been a distant memory by this time. But now she can never leave. Earth has to become home. 

She wants to move on, but feels guilty about how difficult actually doing that is.

So here comes this I-Insta-Love-All-Things-Earth ruby, who seems freakishly well adjusted from the moment she crashes face first into the planet. Never mind that she was lied to not once, but twice, by the crystal gems. Never mind that she was blasted out into space and abandoned while they stole her ship. All is instantly forgiven and she just wants to be a part of their happy family.

Worse yet? The people Lapis cares most about just buy it. They go right along with it as though Navy’s behavior is perfectly normal. It took time for Lapis to even begin to be okay with the idea of living in Earth and forgiving the crystal gems- she’s still working on it, and it’s painful. She’s worked so hard for every inch of progress she’s made, and here’s someone who’s seemingly able to move on the same day they got to Earth.

I just don’t get it. Why is it so easy for her when it was so hard for me? 

So when the perfectly well adjusted Navy turned out to be a gleeful sociopath  gleefully hell bent on revenge, everything fell into place.

Navy’s sudden but inevitable betrayal was the best thing to happen for Lapis’ mental health to date.

So what’s the take away from this? 1) People react differently to trauma. 2) Just because someone seems well adjusted doesn’t mean they are. 3) It’s okay to take a long time to heal from your traumas. It’s okay for it to be a constant work in progress. It’s okay not to be okay. 

And at the end of the day, that realization can almost feel like happiness.

This may not mean a whole lot for some people, but it does to me. Finn (The small galra girl) is Keith and Lance’s adopted daughter. The song is by Abba and a song that my own mother sang to me. I imagine that Keith would sing it to his little girl when she needed it most. 

I want to know what she thinks we’re going to do with her.

Because I’m going to do something worse.

of course kara and maggie will get there in time, but not before she passes out in that tank. so alex is gonna have to come to terms with the fact that she’s going to die. maybe the water is at her waist and she’s still sure they’ll come in time. she’s talking to them through the video feed and trying to keep kara from going off the rails. passing along any helpful information for j'onn. and then the water is at her neck and her feet barely touch the ground and she’s telling maggie she’s okay. her heart is racing a little faster and she’s trying to use her pants to slow the flow of water. but then it’s rising above her head and she has to tread to stay afloat. she realizes there’s only a few inches of air left and no one is on the other side of the video feed. they’re searching for her she knows, but now she doesn’t think they’ll make it. she double, triple checks to make sure there’s nothing else she can do. she wraps her belt around her hand and takes a deep breath the moment the water reaches the ceiling. she pounds on the glass, a last ditch effort fueled by anger and fear of the inevitable. she feels herself getting lightheaded, and thinks of kara. she feels guilty because kara has already lost so much, and alex promised she would always be there. she knows this could break her, that she’ll never be able to forgive herself for not getting to alex in time. but alex doesn’t blame her, she just hopes she’ll move on one day. the water is still, her chest aches and a darkness is clouding her vision. so she closes her eyes, and sees maggie’s face. she hopes maggie isn’t the one to find her, hopes she doesn’t have to see her like that. and she regrets the words she left unsaid between them. she knows she’s fading, can feel her lungs giving out, but she feels calm. maybe this will break kara, maybe maggie will never move on. but she knows they’ll take care of each other. they’re safe, and they’ll remember her.

Before I was a dumb Zelda fanartist I was a dumb Soul Eater fanartist and seeing Soul Eater stuff on my dashboard made me nostalgic, so here’s some Maka fanart! Even if it’s been years since I’ve left the Soul Eater fandom/series and have moved on to better things, I still have a soft spot for this kid.

Possibly my most favorite thing about What If… is that Jemma is so wholly, constantly aware that the Framework isn’t real. It’s not just that she keeps telling people, it’s in how she acts. Daisy kind of gets lost in her attempts to maintain her unexpected cover, but she’s still typical Daisy—to the point of moving to intervene when those three guys are beating up that Inhuman when they first enter the Triskelion.

Jemma, on the other hand? Jemma has no time for playing along with this fake world.

Exhibit A: her lack of social graces with Julia. To us, her “fascinating” and “you have dreams” are just typical Jemma, taking in details and being impressed with the Framework’s coding. Some random NPC has dreams and makes art? Amazing! But from an outside perspective, her words and tone are so freaking creepy. Like. Jemma, babe. Could you sound any more like a serial killer surprised to hear that her next victim is an actual human being?

But what really stands out is Exhibit B: her conversation with Burnell. Sure, the line “Hydra? They’re all Nazis” is great as a quote, but as an actual thing to say to an impressionable teenager living in what is, effectively, a police state? She encourages a defenseless kid to not only proclaim a very unpopular fact, but to spread it far and wide. It may be the truth, but Hydra does not like it and Burnell is gonna get himself seriously hurt—if not dead—by spreading it.

In the real world, you’d expect Jemma to take that into account. If things went nightmarishly wrong and Hydra won and SHIELD was just some kind of Resistance, she might say something along the lines of, “Yep, Hydra are 100% Nazis, but they’re also basically in charge right now, so maybe keep that fact to yourself and like-minded people you trust absolutely? Just….throwing it out there. Save fighting the propaganda machine for a time when you’re in a position to protect yourself from retaliation.”

But nope. This kid isn’t real. What does Jemma care if Burnell—who’s already shown himself to be pretty senselessly brave by actually tagging Jemma’s car with “Hydra lies” even though we’re shown like two seconds later that surveillance is EVERYWHERE, including this high school parking lot—gets himself killed shouting from the rooftops that Hydra are Nazis? He’s just a collection of code. It’s not an issue.

And the best part? It’s exactly what we should’ve expected. It’s just an extension of how she approached Aida—calling her “it” and always keeping in mind that she was an android, not a person. She, maybe more than anyone else, is super conscious of the difference between real and programmed, and she takes a very practical approach to all of this as a result.

It is SO JEMMA and I love it.

tl;dr: Jemma has no time for manners or for saving/protecting/acting as a good influence on the lives of these Framework NPCs…and it is GLORIOUS.

(I was gonna include her calling Ward a “psycho stalker” to his face, but lbr, she’d do that in the real world without a qualm.)
