Hi, so Im a huge Anakin stan, but I sometimes wonder if my love for him might blind me to some of his faults xD Like, is Anakin full of shit for being mad at Obi Wan during the Deception arc, even tho he himself has his own deceptions (e.g the sand people thing) Are the quality of his lies worse? Also was Anakin ever emotionally manipulative of Obi Wan? Sorry if this ask was kind of a mess, my thoughts are jumbled ;-; P.S I really love your blog, especially your meta! Have an awesome day! <33

First of all, being a huge “Anakin stan” myself, I believe being protective of our favorite characters is completely normal. I make excuses for Anakin that I normally wouldn’t for any other character. I’m biased and I’m cool admitting that because I don’t think it’s a problem. I think it becomes a problem only when you disrespect real people and/or invalidate their opinions because they don’t love a character as much you as do. It becomes a problem when you start considering everyone who don’t think the character is a flawless as you do as “antis” (like everyone who don’t believe Obi-wan was the best mentor EVER hates Obi-wan), when you assume something about someone in real life because of their opinions on a fictional character (like if don’t love Mace Windu, you’re racist), etc. it’s okay to be biased as long as it doesn’t turn into extremism and it doesn’t hurt anyone.

Btw, have you ever noticed how every Star Wars character have fans but Anakin Skywalker have stans? Have you ever wondered why? It’s something that has been bothering me for a while and I’ll write a book on it soon lol

Anyway…Anakin was absolutely justified in being angry at Obi-wan. He was used and he was right in being upset about it. If Anakin had been that upset everytime someone used him, ROTS wouldn’t have happened, imo. The thing is, Anakin lying to Obi-wan doesn’t make Obi-wan lysing to Anakin okay. They were both wrong. The difference is why they lied and how it affected them.

Without getting too deep into each situation Anakin lied because he didn’t trust Obi-wan to understand why he did what he did, he didn’t trust Obi-wan to keep his secret, he wanted to be with Padmé and be a Jedi (to fulfill the prophecy and make qui-Gon and Obi-wan proud) but he ddin’t want to chose or disappoint anyone so he lied. It’s wrong, sure, but Anakin was always about saving and pleasing everyone. Anakin’s lies were about protecting himself and those he cared about (no matter how misguided his actions were).

Obi-wan’s lies were about using Anakin to achieve his goal. It was “the Jedi way”. He didn’t do it to protect himself or Anakin. He did to maximize the chances of success of an extremely convoluted plan. Considering everything Obi-wan had to do join the group and how things worked out, lying to Anakin (and Ahsoka) made little difference in the overall plan.

Again, they were both wrong so I can’t say which lie is “worse” because two wrongs don’t make a right. The same way that the Council using Anakin to spy on Palpatine doesn’t make Anakin slaughtering the Jedi right.

Was Anakin ever emotionally manipulative of Obi Wan? I have to say no. Maybe I’m forgetting something but I can’t think of any example of Anakin emotionally manipulating Obi-wan. But I’m curious now, why do you think he was? :P

Btw, your questions were great. I love thinking about this. Thanks! Sorry if I didn’t make much sense lol I was trying to keep it short :P I hope you’re having an awesome day too <3
