what are your favorite qualities about jason? im sorry if you've answered this already!!
First of all I like what he represents. He challenges Batman’s philosophy in ways that are genuinely compelling and make for a great moral debate. He also challenges Bruce Wayne on a personal level for all of the shit he’s pulled as a patriarch. It’s interesting, it’s complex, and that makes the writer in me happy.
He’s also very topical right now, perhaps more so than the year of his resurrection. We are living in a time where the younger generation is vastly disillusioned with the government, law, and police; when many don’t trust the system to protect or provide us with justice. Jason encapsulates that really well, along with the jaded sentiments of those who come from poverty.
Then there’s the fact that, purely by accident, Jason is an amazing symbol for the victims of violent crime. The victim blaming he sustained in canon for years is eerily similar to how victims get dismissed or blamed irl. Even now people still claim that Jason wasn’t good enough, that he couldn’t hack it, that he was too unstable - and it’s the same old story of rewriting history to discredit a trauma survivor.
In a time where most anti-heroes are these grunting, testosterone-driven, emotionless meatheads, Jason is a great, complex character. He’s academic, he’s witty, he’s strategic. He’s also petty, dramatic af, and has some really solid flaws that make his psyche a delight to examine.
Also I like that he wants the Joker dead.
