soprillo

The other night my friend Cory and I were having a session in the Jazz Lounge and discussing the existence of a bass saxophone. We knew that saxes went as high as soprano and as low as baritone, but I was curious as to whether or not they went higher or lower than that.

Come to find out, there’s 9 members of the saxophone family, starting with the soprillo (also known as the sopranissimo) which is the smallest and highest in pitch, then the sopranito, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass, and the subcontrabass.

This is a video of Attilio Berni playing the subcontrabass and the soprillo saxophones.
