I walked past this poster almost every morning for a week now in the hallway of the train station I arrive at to go to work. It’s only today that I looked closely and noticed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s name on the poster !
So a french production ALW’s The Wizard of Oz is in the works.
It will run for a very limited time (14 performances over the course of nine days) but it will certainly be quite a big production since the show will be performed in the Palais des Congrès which is a 3700 seats concert hall (big french musical shows like Starmania, Notre Dame de Paris, Robins des Bois or Roméo et Juliette generally debut there).
The cast is as follows :
- Candice Parise (Les Misérables, Notre Dame de Paris, Hair) as Dorothy - Natasha St-Pier (Notre Dame de Paris) as the Wicked Witch of the West - Franck VIncent (Little Shop of Horrors, Fiddler on the Roof, Fame) as the Wizard - Sophie Delmas (Mamma Mia) as Glinda - Edouard Thiébaut (Hairspray, Spamalot) as Tin Man - Fred Colas (Shrek, Young Frankenstein, Mamma Mia) as Cowardly Lion - Gregory Deck (Dracula, l'Amour Plus Fort que la Mort) as Scarecrow - Angélique Magnan (Le Cid, l'Avare) as Aunt Em - Jeff Broussoux as Uncle Henry (Peter Pan, Mamma Mia)
I’d say the most surprising piece of casting here is Natasha St-Pier as the Wicked Witch of the West. Natasha played the role of Fleur-de-Lys in the english version of Notre Dame de Paris in 1999. Since then, she has become very famous in France as a solo artist. The Wizard of Oz will be her first musical in 15 years !
I’ve bought my ticket. It’s still early days so it’s relatively easy to get good seats.
