Opening Soon—Taryn Simon at Albertinum, Dresden, Germany

October 24, 2016

“Taryn Simon: A Soldier is Taught to Bayonet the Enemy and not Some Undefined Abstraction” at the Albertinum, Dresden, Germany on October 27th.

Taryn Simon’s encyclopedic typologies of the surprising and exceptional do more than tap into the peripheral or unfamiliar territories of our medialized world. They demonstrate how images are used to produce knowledge and meaning and are invested with authority.

In which Farkle has Riley’s phone and finds out just how much she loves him.

anon: “Could you write a riarkle fic with this (I know you’re busy with meet the minkus’ but yeah. also if you do this could you do meet the minkus first.):

“Riley, I think I have your phone.”

A/N: Okay so as soon as I read this prompt I fell in love. I’m going to finish Meet the Minkus’ very soon (two more chapters left :(  ) So that should be up in the next 24 to 48 hours (I only mean the next chapter not both.). I had to overcome the biggest writers block IN MY LIFE so sorry for the VERY LONG delay.

This fanfic is a sort of an apology. I tried a different style of writing but I don’t know if it turned out well. Okay so without Further ado…

In loving memory of Mercedes Williamson, age 17, the ninth reported trans woman murdered in 2015
"I'll never have nobody like her again... She was the most beautiful person."

Trigger warning for anti-trans violence, murder and transmisogyny

Earlier this month in Alabama, a 17-year-old trans woman was found dead and her killer confessed to murdering her. Because of misgendering by the local media, we are only now learning that Mercedes Williamson is the ninth known trans woman to be murdered in the year 2015.

Williamson’s murderer, 28-year-old Josh Vallum, reportedly knew Williamson was trans – not even a legal adult, but a 17-year-old child – and yet hate crime charges have not been brought.

These are the names of the trans women we have lost in 2015. Remember their names and their lives, taken too soon: Papi Edwards, 20, Louisville, KY;Lamia Beard, 30, Norfolk, VA; Ty Underwood, 24, Tyler, TX; Yazmin Vash Payne, 33, Los Angelos, CA; Taja de Jesus, 36, San Francisco, CA; Penny Proud, 21, New Orlean, LA; Kristina Grant Infiniti, 47, Miami, FL; London Kiki Chanel, 21, Philadelphia, PA; Mercedes Williamson, 17, Theodore, Al. There is also Bri Golec, 22, Akron, OH, who may have been a tenth murdered transgender woman (reports from friends are unclear).

This is what an epidemic of violence against trans women looks like.

At the inaugural National Trans Anti-Violence Convening this past March, Lourdes Hunter of the Trans Women of Color Collective stated, “Last year, 12 trans women of color were (reported) brutally murdered in a 6 month time span as our nation’s largest LGBT organizations celebrated the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion now known as Pride. This year, there have been at least 8 (reported) murders of trans women of color and 6 (reported) deaths by suicide of trans youth. Now more than ever, our communities are in need of healing, fellowship, to be held and to come together to address the physical and structural violence we face every day.”

Rest in power, Mercedes.

….With in 24 hours….

The NYPD strikes again, this time beating an 84-year-old man bloody for failing to heed their commands to stop jaywalking:

Kang Wong was strolling north on Broadway and crossing 96th Street at around 5 p.m., when an officer told him to halt because he had walked against the light.

Police were targeting jaywalkers in the area following the third pedestrian fatality this month around West 96th Street.

Wong, who lives a block away, appeared to not understand the cop, the witnesses said.

The guy didn’t seem to speak English. The cop walked him over to the Citibank” near the northeast corner of 96th and Broadway, said one witness, Ian King, a Fordham University law student.

“[The officer] stood him up against the wall and was trying to write him a ticket. The man didn’t seem to understand, and he started walking away.

“The cop tried to pull him back, and that’s when he began to struggle with the cop,” said King, 24. “As soon as he pushed the cop, it was like cops started running in from everywhere.”

Wong was left bleeding and dazed with cuts to his face.

First of all, as anyone who has ever been in NYC knows, it is the city of jaywalking. Everyone is constantly jaywalking. Forever. Always. Tens of thousands of people are jaywalking in New York right this very moment. It doesn’t hurt anyone; and even playing the most devilish of devil’s advocates, I can’t come up with any reason why it could justify ticketing.

And that brings me to my second point: You know what's never justified? Beating up octogenarians who don’t understand what’s happening to them. Period.

Luncheon of the New Boating Party (After Renoir)

Inspired by Amélie for spoke art‘s tribute to the films of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, San Francisco, May 9th - 30th 2015.

18″ x 24″ giclée, available now in a numbered edition of 100, accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity. Show opens May 9th, with online sales of remaining prints becoming available week commencing May 11th at the gallery’s discretion.

If, like me, you love the movie Amélie, then you’ll know Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party. Really the idea of swapping the characters is already in the movie, in the sense that Amélie sees herself as one of them, but the idea of taking that literally was just too tempting.

It was a blast ‘remaking’ the painting (rebooting?!) and finding the right oil brushes in Painter. That said, I wasn’t interested in trying to make a ‘copy’ of the painting per se, just trying to capture some of the feel. It was an interesting exercise because I had to loosen everything up more than I usually do.

Capturing the likenesses was about just giving them enough detail to make them recognisable, but being careful not to render them out too much. Amélie is slightly more nuanced, and of course deliberately the only one in red, but that just seemed to make sense.

The final touch was to give it the distinctive Amélie colour grade and bring out the yellows, reds and greens.
