what is taylor swift’s most well written song? let’s have a discussion

i’m in my prime,
not withering and old.
but i refuse to play
your wicked games any longer.

i know this tether is unbreakable,
but you make me feel like i’m interchangeable.
you drew a target on my heart,
when did this become fatal attraction?

i don’t have the strength,
the energy,
nor the patience
to be held hostage by your love.

so baby please don’t despair
when i say that
i’ve found the courage to
let you go.

you were never meant to be tied down in the first place.

—  believing i could love you was my mistake, c.j.n.

Taylor Swift and Uzo singing white horse together on the 1989 tour LA night 2!

anonymous asked:

and she has like what 8 no. 1s at the country genre and 20 Top 10 hits at the country airplay, and she also has 20 top 10 hits at the overall billboard chart.

SERIOUSLY. Here are some fun US chart stats about Taylor

Hot 100: 70 total entries

  • #1s: Bad Blood (25 weeks), Blank Space (36 weeks), Shake It Off (30 weeks), WANEGBT (24 weeks)
  • #2s: IKWYT (36 weeks), Today Was A Fairytale (18 weeks), You Belong With Me (50 weeks), I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (10 weeks - so far)
  • #3: Mine (23 weeks)
  • #4: Love Story (49 weeks)
  • #5: Wildest Dreams (27 weeks)
  • Other top ten hits: Style (#6), Red (#6), Back To December (#6), Begin Again (#7), Speak Now (#8), Fearless (#9), If This Was A Movie (#10), Jump Then Fall (#10), Change (#10)

Hot Country: 39 entries (plus Better Man, if you count it, and this doesn’t include any song from 1989 for obvious reasons)

  • #1s: WANEGBT (34 weeks), Ours (20 weeks), Sparks Fly (21 weeks), YBWM (19 weeks), Love Story, (12 weeks), Should’ve Said No (14 weeks), Our Song (24 weeks)
  • #2s: Red (39 weeks), Mean (19 weeks), Mine (15 weeks), White Horse (20 weeks), Teardrops (27 weeks)
  • #3s: Back To December (19 weeks), Picture to Burn live (20 weeks)

Pop songs: 21 entries (and this doesn’t count roughly half of her singles before 1989)

  • #1s: Bad Blood (20 weeks), Style (20 weeks), Blank Space (21 weeks), Shake It Off (20 weeks), Wildest Dreams (20 weeks), IKYWT (21 weeks), Love Story (24 weeks)
  • #2s: WANEGBT (20 weeks), YBWM (27 weeks)

And just for good measure, all of her albums except for debut peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 — debut peaked at #5 — and they all charted for over 100 weeks. 1989 is still charting at #177 at its 120th week on the chart.

Pretty impressive, huh?

Beautiful ‘Fearless’ Album Things
  • The title and album cover like wow damn
  • The platinum edition and how Taylor gave all the extra songs their own secret messages (which she hasn’t done since)
  • How for the whole album every song about falling hoplessly in love is followed by a song about the repercussions of naivety and youth and trying to reconcile being a hopeless romantic who doesn’t is afraid of being heartbroken
  • How the intro of “Fearless” sound so whimsical and makes you want to fall hopelessly in love which reflects the message of the song
  • How she plays Fearless every time she plays at Gillette to honor how it was her first stadium show during the Fearless Tour
  • How Taylor depicts love as a form of freedom and bravery
  • How “Fifteen” is a complete story of a year in Taylor and Abigail’s life of when and how they decided to put their careers and dreams above boys when they were taught by society to put boyfriends above everything else
  • How “Fiteen,” both song and music video, was a warning to teenage girls to not trust young love and to value themselves above boys and to look for themselves before they look for love
  • The motif of light to depict love: “dancing ‘round your room when the light ends,” “i saw a light in you,” “shine, shine, shine,” “you used to shine so bright”
  • The motif of saving: “no one here to save me now,” “try to catch me now,” “Romeo save me,” “I come home crying and you grab the keys”
  • The motif of driving: “we’re driving down the road,” “there in my rear view mirror disappearing now,” “I see your face in my mind as I drive away,” “I get into his car,” “and we drive and drive until we find a town far enough away”
  • The motif of calling: “you’re on the phone with you girlfriend,” “you don’t have to call anymore,” “he calls exactly when he says he will,” “I stare at the phone / he still hasn’t called,”
  • How hundreds of people have gotten engaged to the bridge of “Love Story”
  • How “Love Story” follows “Fifteen” and Taylor takes out the ending of Romeo and Juliet which follows more with the message of “Fifteen”
  • Taylor’s random reference of “The Scarlet Letter” in “Love Story” which doesn’t really make sense unless she’s just using the theme of stigma
  • How cute and simple the production, music, and lyrics of “Hey Stephen” is to reflect how innocent and pure her crush on Stephen is
  • “All those others girls, well they’re beautiful, but would they write a song for you?”
  • Using the theme of a fairytale in “White Horse” to convey the loss of innocence when you meet reality and then again in “The Best Day” to convey her innocence as a child
  • “I’m gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well”
  • How she drives away at the end of “White Horse” when the assumption is that the love interest was going to take her away on a white horse
  • “Stupid girl / I should’ve known” –> “the girl in the dress cried the whole way home / I should’ve known”
  • “You Belong With Me” is still a fucking bop
  • The secret message of “Breathe” being “I’m sorry” over and over
  • Fading out of “You’re Not Sorry” with just “No, no, no” over and over
  • The guitar and drum build ups in “The Way I Loved You” to mimic the build and explosion of emotions in the past relationship
  • How Taylor placed “The Way I Loved You” after all these sad songs about losing love because of the other person to show that sometimes it’s you who’s at fault because you’re stuck in the past and not appreciating what’s in front of you
  • During the bridge of “The Way I Loved You” when the instrumentals drop and it’s just Taylor’s voice and the guitar
  • How “Fifteen” played as Taylor walked up the stage to accept her first Entertainer of the Year award in 2009 and the last line that played was “you just might find who you’re supposed to be” :’)
  • The Best Day and Change are real songs that we can listen to :’) :’)
  • Ending the album with a love song to her a mother/family and a love song to her career/record label :’)
  • She ended the album with “Change,” which is about the struggles of being a new indie label, and then she won Album of the Year at the Grammys for the album :’)
  • The most awarded country album in music history :’) Written by a 16-18 year old girl :’)
Music Speaks (Part 2)

Warnings: Swearing and Angst
AN: This song is based off the song, ‘White Horse’ by Taylor Swift. I recommend listing to it as you read along, though you may need to keep it on loop.

(PART 1)

………”I don’t–” Her voice cracked as she whispered to herself, “I don’t know what to do.” Thankfully she was the only one in her and Steve’s shared apartment. The only thing keeping her company was the ticking noise of the clock that hung above the kitchen table she sat at. Her eyes were glued to the notebook paper before her, the only thing written were two words,

“To Steve,”

How could two simple words be causing her such a strong chest wrenching feeling in her chest–it felt as if something was strangling her heart with one hand as the other was squeezing her neck. Well, there was something strangling her—hurt. It has been a week since the anniversary incident, and Steve has not even noticed he forgot. She tried hinting at him, but her hints fell upon a too busy Steve–a too busy Captain America. It has been months since she has seen her Steve, but she is well acquainted with the Avenger–the superhero. The hero who spends weeks away on missions saving the world–the hero who is too busy to save his own relationship.

Please Swifties: I desperately need your help to send this letter...

I know you probably get thousands upon thousands of messages and letters a day, but if you have time, it would mean the world to me if you could read this when you come back to Tumblr. Even if you don’t see this, if you don’t respond, at least I know these words are out there, and maybe these words will resonate with others. But first, I think I should introduce myself. My name is Sarah, I am eighteen, I study English Literature and I want to go into academia researching medieval literature. I’m oh so slightly introverted and shy (and wheat intolerant). I love the countryside and old things (especially Polaroid cameras and vinyl records- I don’t have one though), I love to bake, I love to read, I love to learn, I love to write. I’ve been listening to your music since I was ten years old, ever since I heard Love Story on the radio on the way to school. I didn’t stop dancing around to ‘Fearless’ for 6 months straight after my parents bought it for me. Then I Went out and bought ‘Taylor Swift’. Thus begins this magical saga.

'Fearless’ was the first time I realised the truth in your words “people haven’t always been there for me, but music has”, because I had a very odd passion for a ten year old, I loved to read and learn, I loved to be alone and write poetry. And people thought it was weird, I remember listening to your music, your first two albums and I saw myself. I saw my own insecurities and desires in 'Taylor Swift’, I felt like you knew what it was like to stand on your own, to take the high road. I saw my own romantic fairytales in 'Fearless’, I knew all too well the lessons learned. I remember when it felt like I was alone, I could feel close to you, like you could understand my ten year old self. I felt like you had rummaged through my journal and written them into 3:30 minute songs, The Outside, Tied Together With A Smile, Love Story, Breathe, White Horse, Change. Those are the songs I will always go back to when I’m having a tough day. I still remember how when I was twelve, I realised I didn’t fit in, even more so now that 'cliques’ were becoming a thing, I didn’t get invited to parties, I didn’t even have a clique. I would read at lunchtimes, I was ostracized because I didn’t like what everyone else wanted to love… And 'Speak Now’ showed up just in time. For the next one and a half years it was all I listened to, YOU were all I listened to. You gave me your shoulder to weather the storm. You were on my side, fighting my corner when I felt no one else was.

I remember when I was fifteen, the friends I had made at the start of upper school had drifted away from me, I had lost my grandfather to cancer. I felt so lost and so heartbroken, and like some miracle, there was 'Red’. And I remember I played that album for months when it came out, for what seemed like years when I fifteen. I would always start at 'All Too Well’. It’s one of my favorite songs…. I don’t know who got me out of that, maybe it was you, my family, I think it’s a bit of both. Let’s just say you both helped build the rungs to the ladder.

When I was 16, my relationship with my biological father (our relationship has always been strained because… nevermind) it wavered on the verge of falling apart, little did I know that two years later I would make the decision to part ways with him. I thought my life was over, I thought that I wasn’t strong enough to get through it and just like that, you did it again. 1989 came out. It was summer. It was strong. You had come alive, into your own. It showed me what I could be, if I let go of what I couldn’t change, what I could be if I believed in myself. Rather than my mirror, you became the person I wanted to be. You quite literally saved my life. 'Clean’ saved my life. 'I Know Places’ saved my life. Every. Single. Song. On. That. Album. Saved me. And I can never thank you enough for that. I remember going to see you in Hyde Park with my best friend and it was one of the best nights of my life. I came into my own. I came away with a confidence I hadn’t felt in months. I remember listening to that most magical clean speech with the desire to fight harder than ever.

I feel like you are a constant in my life now. I feel like, every time you release an album… It’s always in the nick of time to save me from disaster, or to help me through something, or to make me wanna get up and dance. And I will never stop thanking you for that. You have inspired me to love myself. To be confident. You have helped me become patient with others. You have made me stronger because you believed in me. You believed in me the way my Mum and Step-Dad do. You love me the way I love my three little sisters. You have embedded yourself into my life, and I haven’t even met you, in truth I don’t actually know that much about you… But I feel like I do. Is that weird? Thank you Taylor, for being here all this time. Thank you endlessly. I will never stop thanking you. And I will never stop loving you, and if I ever get the honor of meeting you one day I will tell you this myself. And yes I shall probably cry doing it.

I hope to God you hear this. I hope, through whatever means, that this finds you, it’s like a message in a bottle, right?

Love, Sarah :)

Now it’s too late for you and your white horse to come around

Dear Taylor...

I don’t know if you’ll read this…

But I made a new blog dedicated just to you.

I hope you’ll lurk me and notice me at some point, and read this…

I want you to know, that you’ve been my role model and saving grace since Elementary school,

and since my papaw passed away when I started high school in 2011.

And a few months later when my dad stopped talking to me (we haven’t spoken in 5 almost 6 years.)

I’ve always been the awkward one. I lost a lot of friends.

I never knew I had autism until Sophomore year of high school.

I was 17 then.

And I’m 21 going on 22 now.

I was so alone.

I was bullied.

Nobody wanted to be friends with me much at all in Elementary school and left me to play by myself.

One time in the 5th grade, one of my friends who I told a secret to about the guy I really liked, told the girl who used to be my best friend, who was his GIRLFRIEND, that I liked him and everyone turned on me.

In middle school it continued… but diff people.

My best best friend who I met in 5th grade and a lot of my friends turned on me.

One of them I had invited to go with me to a Jonas Brothers concert, was a part of that.

(Long story short, that friend didn’t go, and I took my absolute best friend who went to a diff school in another county (and I met her when I was the third grade!) PS- She’s the one who got me into your music. I don’t talk to her much anymore. But if we got to meet you together, I’d cry. We used to watch you on Ellen all the time.)

But Even in High School it continued.

My so called friends (including my best best friend that I met in the 5th grade)started to turn on me and left me alone at the lunch table.

I was crushed. I didn’t know what I did wrong.

The guy that I really liked was one of them.

I had wanted to never go back that stupid place ever again.

I couldn’t even do online school.

So I had to deal with it until Senior year when my fam moved back home to Ohio.

I finally was accepted for who I was.

I was bulled by a music teacher for having trouble with sight singing for our choir competition and by some of the class for that and other reasons.

I hated my life for a very long time.

But I once I got to the 4th grade, your album came out.

And I loved it.

It made me happy every time I heard “A Place In This World” come on in my MP3 player when I was 11.

For my 6th grade talent show, I performed Change. I loved that song so much.

Then at my 8th grade talent show, I performed White Horse. (Acapella btw. Cause the track I originally bought wasn’t right. The timing was off af. Ps- Bad idea. Cause I knew (and still know it ) by heart so I would pause when I knew it would on the original track cause it was in my head, so everyone would start clapping because they thought I was done. Lmao 😂😂😂 my principle had to shut the clappers down and tell them that I was still going.

Senior Year- Talent Show… I brought the house down with my performance of Shake It Off.

You have to know that I was always a big scaredy cat… and I couldn’t sing with my glasses on when I sang in talent shows.

I was too scared to sing in front of people period.

But that night… when I sang shake it off… I felt like I was invincible. I sounded perfect. My dance moves weren’t that great. But they wowed the audience. I still get complements for my performance, today.

(Well, when I come home to visit.)

But Tay… I wore my glasses for the first time in many years.

And I wasn’t scared anymore.

I also happened to sing more of your songs in public that were karaoke days and at my graduation party.

Middle school- “Love Story”, “Picture To Burn” and maybe a few others. It’s been a long time.

While I was in Florida visiting my Mammaw, I did an old 8th grade throwback, “White Horse.”

And at my grad party from high school, May 30, 2015,

Shake It Off.

With. My. Glasses. On.

And You also helped me (with also cred to an ass lode of Gilmore Girls) with the move I had from home to NC. I was heart broken. I had started over finally where I always wanted to be. I was born in Ohio and pretty much all my fam lives and is from there. This was in August.

I was jobless since then until a few weeks ago when I finally got a job at Best Buy!!!

Ps- I’ve gotten lots of compliments about how I sound just like you when I sing!! :) ❤❤❤

So to end this and if I went of topic or didn’t make any since…

I wrote this post to tell you that,

You have saved my life. You’ve given me confidence to be myself and to keep my glasses on!!👓 and shake off those haters!!

I love love love you T!!!
