You know, I’ve had plenty of patients be physically violent over the years. Sometimes they’re altered in some way – dementia, alcohol, drugs, acute psychosis, overstimulation, traumatic brain injury, etc. – and sometimes they’re combative from the start. But I think last night was the first time I’ve had someone consciously and deliberately lash out. She was calm and cooperative and completely appropriate until the moment she suddenly hit me, and it shook me up a lot more than I expected it to.
I mean, I’m fine, she didn’t hit me in the face or anything and the bruise is relatively small, but still. Not feeling super great about the job lately.
