something could happen

I absolutely want Bum to stay with Sangwoo. As someone who actually quite likes Bum, I'd be horrified to see him end up in prison and I don't wanna imagine what they'd do to him in there. And I don't want Sangwoo to end up in prison either! I want them to be still with each other at the end, and I'd like Seungbae to be dead. That's just me though.

You’re not alone. :D Agreed. Although personally I don’t want Seungbae to be dead. He’s annoying sometimes but he’s still a good character. Maybe something more interesting could happen.

On a fundamental level, the defenses of Chapo Trap House can be said to originate from one common source: the belief that leftism is inherently doomed, that all action is pointless, and that there is no hope whatsoever.

That is, the fact that Felix Biederman transparently believes being fat and gay is an insult, and that he throws that out as an insult, and expects his audience to cackle with glee at the insult- well, if we believed that leftism was something that could happen, this would give us pause because one of the major signifiers of being an Anglo leftist is fucking Chapo Trap House, and we might well consider whether we really ought to preserve that signifier when they’re all about cultivating ironic bigotry from their audience. (We might also consider why white upper-middle-class Brooklynites are being held up as the authentic vox populi.

But if we understand that leftism will never achieve anything it’s irrelevant, because even if they started gaybashing people they will never have any kind of power to accomplish anything, as they are leftist, at least notionally.

And if you understand this understanding as universal among leftists, then anyone who treats Chapo with any seriousness, who treats any left-wing idea with any seriousness, and engages in any criticism, is thus inherently an enemy of leftism because a real leftist or fellow-traveler would know that nothing leftists say can be relevant to anything. It’s all critiques, as it were. Thus, you cannot criticize from the left, except by adopting this ideology of despair, in whole or in part.

Now, I’m being harsh here, and overreaching. There are plenty of jokes and comments that really do not deserve to be treated as serious ones. There’s also the problem that treating calls for violence as serious and responding seriously runs up against differing conceptions of violence etc. etc. I do think, however, that the majority of people can discern the differences without needing a lot of exposure, and also that there are enough people willing to do outreach to help smooth over genuine misunderstandings.

But this depression theory is, I feel, a real thing that causes real problems. Like, people will say that you must hate cops and soldiers, but “hate” apparently refers more to what you might call “righteous anger”, because there’s no call for individual or collective action to slaughter and/or reeducate those people, not even the beginnings of any kind of theory. All we can do, for the majority of left-wing people on social media, is apparently post about how bad they are.

I don’t want to say that you shouldn’t post. I do think that if you believe that posting is all you can do, or more broadly that passivity is all you can do, then you’ve gotten yourself into a nasty psychological trap (one made more dangerous by other common left-wing beliefs) and one way to stay out of it is to cut words like “critique” from your vocabulary, and avoid academicizing your small talk. Because if we understand that posting is functionally small talk, we can avoid thinking it’s a substitute for political action and involvement, and we can also begin to have genuine discussions via small talk about what form that action should take and what it should aim for. And from there begin to implement that action.

I mean, fundamentally this requires belief in the ability to exert power, and plenty of you guys take it as an article of faith that you are completely powerless, to the point of violently rejecting anything which suggests you might have any power whatsoever as liberalism. There’s a serious discussion to be had about how this makes power a magical phenomenon that emerges mysteriously from groups, rather than collective action allowing the mobilization of individual power in a more effective form, but most people don’t operate in that area. I would instead suggest attempting to cultivate a sense of power, to the extent that your personal circumstances allow for it, so that you can be freed from paralysis.

An entire city in the Philippines is being controlled by ISIS-linked group. Please pray, like seriously pray for the city of Marawi and its people being held hostage.

Can we just talk about how fucking great the writing on this show is?

Okay, this one requires a little explaination.

At this point in the series, we’ve seen people shrug off injuries like they were nothing. Steven and the Gems (especially the Gems) tank a HECK load of hits. Just watch Pearl v Sugilite (Coach Steven), Pearlbot v Peribot (Back to the Barn), the Gems v the waterclones (Ocean Gem), Garnet v Jasper (Jailbreak), Stevonnie v Jasper (Crack the Whip), or any other fight scene you can think of.

Now, the Off Colors (+ Lars and Steven) v Robonoids isn’t even that impressive of a fight. It’s fucking tense, sure, but there’s mostly just a whole lotta hiding.

Until this moment.

Lars is terrified, but he gathers his courage and attacks one of the robonoids head-on. He leaps on top of it, clinging onto it for dear life as it tries to throw him off.

Then we get a bunch of this fuckery.

And HERE, in THIS exact moment, is where things go south.

But the thing is, we don’t realise it yet. We as viewers are so absorbed in cheering for Lars, we don’t even THINK about the consequences this could have for him.

Now, another thing about Steven Universe is that things explode. And when they do, they explode impressively and they explode beautifully.

(from Laser Light Cannon)

(from Super Watermelon Island)

(from Serious Steven)

So when comparing those shots to this shot of the Robonoid exploding…

…this explosion is extremely underwhelming.

Combined with the fact that we’ve never seen a character get seriously hurt in explosions before, we don’t see this as a threat. We are not worried in this moment because Lars just beat this fucker! We are relieved, we are happy, we are ready to start celebrating. Meaning that seeing this…

…over the sound of a flatline…

…is jarring as all hell, because it immediately tells us celebrating viewers that something is WRONG.

And Steven knows it.

The reaction of the Off Colors here immediately becomes dissonant and strange. After all, these gems don’t know about human deaths. Lars hasn’t poofed, so he’s fine…

…right?

no.

no he’s not.

he is not fine.

he’s dead.

And that’s the kicker.

Steven Universe has been running for four seasons, and NOBODY HAS EVER DIED ON SCREEN BEFORE NOW!

We aren’t expecting it! We have gotten so used to death not being a real threat in this show because surely the Crewniverse wouldn’t dare kill off a main character that we’ve stopped factoring it in as something that could happen.

Even the Off Colors are realizing it now. Even Paddy realizes it.

One of Steven’s best friends just died. For real. On screen. In a fight we would have written off as underwhelming if not for this moment.

What the fuck, Rebecca.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE! Luca is now home from surgery. They did a spay, mass removal, and tail amputation. They took a lot off her tail which means her tail was a lot worse than we thought, both myself and the vets. They did xrays to see if the cancer had spread and if so, where and she is officially cancer free!

We do, however, have to do a few follow up visits, so she’s not out of the woods yet. There’s still a chance something could happen during the healing process that could require emergency attention.

I spoke with the investigating officer today about her and her case, I brought my vet bills, pictures, screen shots of conversations, and they will be making contact by tomorrow afternoon with the people that did this to my baby.

As I said, we’re not out of the woods yet. Please continue to share her gofundme, we still need help covering some costs for her. We want to make sure she gets the best care and treatment possible. So please don’t give up on us.

You know, I really love the Pirates of the Caribbean world. I love the magic, the voodoo and curses being sea-themed, the sea creatures and I love the characters too.

But stars am I sick of the stories. I don’t want Jack and a girl/boy lovestory happening because shenanigans. I am tired of some guy who we never heard before coming to get Jack because Jack was an ass to him in the past.

I know this movie will be the last (according to the trailers for the 5th movie) but you know what kind of stuff I would have loved to see?

  • sea creatures becoming more of a threat since Calypso is free again (Jack goes to find the (former) Priest and his mermaid (now wife) who help him find Calypso so he can talk to her)
  • someone took Barbossa’s old treasure to become the powerful undead ruler of the seas (classic Disney Villains, hmmm, I miss those) (Barbossa and Jack are once again required to work together, lots of quality banter happens while chasing a villain who pisses them both off)
  • Jack’s dad vanishes and with him the pirate codex (personal conflict for Jack that might give us character development and some more insight on how Jack became who he is today)
  • Angelica uses the voodoo doll of Jack that she still has in some way that gets Jack in a huge amount of trouble. (SERIOUSLY HAVE WE FORGOTTEN THAT SHE STILL HAS THAT THING?)
  • Elizabeth becoming a pirate herself because she and her son are tired of waiting 10 years to see Will for only a day. (Elizabeth needs to find a ship that can keep up with the Flying Dutchman so she can sail with Will. Maybe their son somehow becomes Jack’s best friend? Someone who knows what to expect from Jack from his mother’s stories? And who is perfectly able to kick Jack’s ass if needed.)

Those are just some ideas and personally would have loved to see either of them as a movie. But no, we are stuck on repeat with the plot of the first movie until the end. :/

If you can’t protect Iris, Joe has no use for you

I can't help but hate levi///han now that levi is a dick to hange and doesn't deserve her I read this theory that questiong thing from this month means they are not even friends anymore bcoz levi doesn't feel comfortable enough to call hange by the nickame he had for her anymore and that's sad and also makes me angry because hange is always so nice to him and levi is a douche

Eh, that’s not how I see it.

IMO him dropping that nickname means 1) he legitimately respects her new position and wants to place an emphasis on that by example (humanity’s strongest soldier respecting the new commander is a big deal), and 2) he’s actively trying not to be a dick by throwing out a nickname that is NO LONGER APPROPRIATE – not just due to her rank, but, you know, the fact that she’s lost/damaged/ruined one of her eyes, now.

The situation that ruined her eye was extremely traumatic: it got her work assistant killed–not to mention all of her colleagues: people’s she’s known for years of her career. This includes Erwin, whose shoes she has to fill right away. I doubt she wants the reminder of that terrible day spat out of Levi’s mouth like it’s some kind of a funny joke when there’s very little chance of her being able to see it that way anymore. I know everyone thinks Hange would take it with a grain of salt and all that (cracking jokes galore), but she has feelings and again: the situation was very traumatic. You don’t see Levi cracking jokes about his traumatic experiences, do you?

Fandom conveniently forgets that Hange is a person who experiences human emotion because they’re desperate to keep the ship dynamic for levihan the same forever.

And look, until we got this information, I think interpreting Hange as the sort of person who wanted normalcy there to distract from the depressing and painful reality was believable and realistic.

But with this information it seems that’s not actually the case.

And that’s okay! There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s okay for your headcanons to be proven wrong on occasion.

And listen to me, here: people change. They grow, and it’s not always apart. Sometimes they grow together, especially after they’ve been through something rough. The fight in Shiganshina was a rough experience.

Hange has been through a surprising lot, though she’s barely focused on during those chapters. Almost the entire military branch she works in was wiped out. She lost countless acquaintances and friends. Now she has to lead what’s left of it…and without an eye. I wish fandom would stop laughing it off like it’s a cute “fun” injury because it looks “cool.” It was probably highly traumatic and painful for her, not just in the moment, either. The fact that it took so long for her to get treatment might have even been the real reason she lost it. The eye loss is associated with all kinds of trauma, both physical and mental. She’s a soldier, she’s accepted that something like this could happen, but that doesn’t make it easier to deal with; it doesn’t make any of her losses less painful.

So let’s talk about the responsibility that’s instantly clamped down on her shoulders after this, because Hange doesn’t even get a second to herself to just, you know, mourn or be sad. She’s the commander now. And while the SC might have sealed the wall(s), it was at a great price (and still under Erwin’s command almost entirely). Hange is going to have to fight for respect from pretty much everyone. Mission accomplished and all, but now that the walls are sealed, humanity is safe again lmao fuck the Survey Corps do we even need that branch anymore? Hange is going to have to present a case to save humanity and exterminate the titans and she’s going to need all the respect she can get to do that. She’s going to need more soldiers because <10 isn’t going to be enough. She’s going to need money and supplies and gear. I hate saying this, but it might not be something she’s capable of presenting on her own merit because she’s largely unknown by the people. (Her newspaper shenanigans help her case but only in that specific area.) However, humanity’s strongest soldier has pretty much all the respect from everyone in this world. If he has her back and is standing proudly at her side, it probably helps her case immensely. (He believes her, he believes in her, this isn’t some kind of a sick joke.)

I want to remind everyone, too, that when the newspapers start telling “the truth” of humanity’s situation, it’s like a 50/50 split? Lots of people think it’s bullshit. That doesn’t help Hange. Like I said: she needs all the respect and the backup she can get. Literally every ounce.

IMO, Levi dropping the nickname “shitty-glasses” was the best thing that could have happened to the ship. I know people think it means they’re not “equals” anymore, but everyone’s focusing on the wrong thing, here.

Up to this point in the manga we’ve seen Levi treat Hange more or less equally, but even in his attempts to comfort her he’s rough. He calls her by a rude nickname that we’re never sure is supposed to be endearing or not. For all we know, he means it in the way a coworker might call the fat guy in the group “porkchop” or other kids might be mean to a classmate by calling them “four-eyes.” Speculation and headcanons aside, canon hasn’t ever really given us a clear idea of what that nickname meant to Levi, let alone to Hange. She lets him call her it, but that doesn’t tell us much. For all we ever knew, she was used to being treated poorly by her peers.

However, with this new information, it sounds much more like the nickname “shitty-glasses” was, coming from Levi, an awkwardly endearing nickname–one he meant no harm with.

And we see that because he drops it. He goes out of his way to consciously stop a habit of his that would seem disrespectful to other people regardless of what it originally meant between them. Levi respects Hange and this is how he shows it. That’s a big deal.

I’d also like to point out, again, that it’s very likely he does this out of more than just respect for his commanding officer. Levi is hardly one to follow conventions, after all.

Hange is his friend. He cares about her safety and we’ve seen this (beneath the chapel). We’ve also seen him clumsily care about the place she’s in mentally (post-Nick’s death). I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that he cares about her feelings, too. And if this nickname drudges up emotional backlash and trauma for her, then by dropping it he’s showing that he cares about her and respects her as his friend.

The field trip was boring, to say the least. It was an art museum, and although you loved looking at art, you had been to this museum more times than you could count. Peter had, too.

But still, you feigned interest in the same pieces you had seen before. They used to amaze you, but now they simply bored you. The class had been organized into groups of ten when you got off the bus, and somehow, you had ended up in the same group as Peter and Ned. You weren’t sure if this was a good thing or a bad thing. At least you had Michelle with you, but she was never much of a talker.

As your group made their way through the museum, occasionally bumping into other groups along the way, you began to zone out. You thought of a world where you and Peter could end up together, where he felt the same way about you that you felt about him.

You thought about holding his hand while walking down the halls at school, about going to the next homecoming dance together. You thought about him kissing you goodbye at the end of the night before he webbed across buildings to get back to his apartment.

You wished it were real, so badly. And maybe it could be, one day, but you knew it was unrealistic. You were sure that Peter was still hung up on Liz, even after all these months. But maybe after he got over her, there was that chance, that he would see what he was missing. Maybe he would see that he was missing you.

A siren went off, breaking you out of your thoughts. You frantically looked around with wide eyes, and you noticed the rest of your group was doing the same. The speakers of the museum crackled overhead, signaling someone was about to speak.

“The museum is on lockdown. I repeat, the museum is on lockdown. There is an active assault outside of the museum. Please stay calm and stay where you are.”

A few gasps sounded from your classmates, but you simply stood there with wide eyes, finding it hard to breathe. You had been in too many dangerous situations in the past month for your liking. You began to think of being trapped under the shelves, not being able to move and screaming for help.

Your shoulders hunched, almost as if you were caving in on yourself. You looked down at the ground, trying to control your breathing before it got out of hand. You wanted to go home. You should’ve stayed home.

“Alright, kids,” you heard the slightly panicked voice of your chaperone say, “let’s all move into the corner.”

“But the person said to stay where you are!” A random kid shouted out.

“They meant stay in the room. Just move into the corner,” the chaperone said, motioning to you guys to move.

The ten of you cluttered into the corner, five leaning against each wall with the chaperone standing in front of you, his back to you guys. You ended up squished between Peter and Michelle, and although you desperately wanted to lean into your best friend for comfort, you found yourself leaning towards Michelle instead.

“Stay quiet,” your chaperone added, his back still facing the ten of you.

You glanced around at your classmates quickly, noticing they were just as afraid as you were. They were shaking, and some were darting their eyes around the room frantically while others clenched their eyes shut. Even Michelle looked unsettled.

You took a quick look at Peter from the corner of your eye to see him not looking scared nor fine, but antsy. You knew it was because he wanted to pull his suit on and run out of the museum to apprehend the attacker, but he couldn’t, not while trapped in this room. He couldn’t leave. You were thankful for it, not wanting one more thing to freak out about in this moment.

You faced your head back down, closing your eyes and leaning your forehead against your knees. You breathed deeply, evening your breaths to stay calm. You wouldn’t think of all the possible things that could go wrong. You wouldn’t.

(You were thinking about all the possible things that could go wrong.)

“Hey,” you heard a whisper from next to you. You looked up, opening your eyes again and looking at Peter. His eyebrows were furrowed—a frequent look on him—and he was staring at you intently.

“What?” You whispered, staring at him back.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

So he had noticed something was wrong.

“Yeah,” you gave him a tight smile and looked down at your lap. You knew that if he could analyze your face, he would see that something is wrong.

Apparently he could tell anyways, because he leaned closer to your ear, saying, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong, Pete, I’m fine,” you stayed looking at your lap, knowing that if you turned your head, his face would be right in front of you. That was a dangerous position to be in.

“I don’t believe you,” he said, still speaking into your ear. “I know you, (Y/N). Something is wrong.”

You sighed deeply. You hated him in that moment, as he told you how well he knew you and how he could so easily tell something was wrong. But no, you didn’t, because you loved him, you loved him, you loved him.

You wouldn’t lie to yourself. You loved how well he knew you.

“Just nervous. Something bad could happen,” you said. You turned your head to look at him, and sucked in a quick breath of air when you noticed the very small amount of space between your faces.

“You don’t have to be nervous,” Peter said, not moving back. His eyes stared into yours. You almost didn’t hear his words, the thoughts in your mind screaming too loudly. You love him, you love him, you love him.

His nose nearly touched yours, and you could see every detail on his face being this close to him. You wanted to lean closer, lean that smallest bit forward, but you wouldn’t. You couldn’t.

“I’ll protect you,” he finished, and your heart leapt in your chest at the words.

It was moments like this when you would think about if that world that existed somewhere, where you and Peter ended up together, could be this world.

“Yeah,” was the only thing you could manage as you found yourself admiring his eyes, his nose, his face.

He was beautiful, and in that moment, you were so sure that you were in love with him.

You weren’t doubting that you did before, but now, in such a close proximity to him as he whispered words to you that meant so much more than he could ever know, you loved him.

You thought you would always love him.

Peter finally looked away, leaning back and directing his eyes to look down at his lap. You looked away, too, down at your lap as well, biting your lip to keep a smile from breaking out on your face.

But then you looked up, remembering where you were, in lockdown at a museum, hoping for an assaulter to not make it through the front doors. You stiffened immediately, your sudden movement brushing your shoulder against Peter’s.

You felt a hand clasp around yours, and you looked down to your side to see Peter gently linking his hand with your hand, placing his fingers in between yours. He didn’t look at you, nor you at him, but as he squeezed your hand lightly, you tightened your grip on his hand.

He’ll protect you. He’ll protect you. He’ll protect you.

And with an ounce of hope in your heart, you let yourself think, Maybe that was his way of saying ‘I love you.’
