Believe In Bellarke

I’ve seen a lot of people losing hope, and I just don’t feel that way at all. Maybe this explanation of why will give all of you a little hope as well. If you haven’t read my other metas on season 4B Bellarke, do so if you wish because they relate to this and I still stand by them.

A lot of my optimism has to do with parallels and comparisons given to us this season.

Let’s start with Clarke.

Clarke’s season four arc is dealing with the burden of leadership. Arguably, I’d say it’s a continuation of the line, “I bear it so they don’t have to,” in Blood Must Have Blood Part Two. Clarke has developed the mentality that she has to bear it so her people don’t have to, and ironically, it’s taken her down the same path that Dante Wallace, the person who first said those words to her, went down in season two.

Occasionally, Clarke sets aside this defense for comfort, but she’s only done this with two people this season: Niylah and Bellamy.

Clarke seeks out Niylah and is always the one to instigate the physical contact we see between them, but we never really see her relax. The most recent example we have of this is in The Other Side where Clarke opens up a little to Niylah, trying to psych herself up into actually believing what she’s doing is right, but her back is physically to her the entire time. As we see later in the episode—where Clarke holds a gun to Bellamy and repeats that what she’s doing, she’s doing to save humanity—that moment with Niylah held little in the way of clarity or comfort for Clarke. In the end, it served as a comparison.

There have been precious few moments this season where Bellamy has physically comforted Clarke—one, to be exact. The List. We’ve seen Bellamy and Clarke physically comfort each other before, and every time has been effective in making a difference in the outlook or emotional distress that one character or another has been in. Most notably: The Hug in Human Trials, The Hug in Join Or Die, and the Hand Hold in Perverse Instantiation Part Two. So, why, compared to past seasons, has there been a lack of physical comfort between the two?

Clarke is almost always the person to initiate contact when she’s looking for comfort because Clarke is a physical person. It’s curious, then, that when the world is ending, she doesn’t go to the one person who has been proven to actually comfort her time and time again.

The one time Bellamy was the one to initiate the contact—his hand on her shoulder—we see Clarke basically melt, nuzzling into it. The List Scene was an incredibly intimate moment that both Bellamy and Clarke recognized the gravity of. They were both willing to say, “I will deprive someone else of this chance at survival, because you deserve it, too, and I refuse to live without you.” The look she gives Bellamy as he walks away from her in The Four Horsemen has been debated. Some people say she felt rejected by Bellamy, and maybe that’s true, but I also think it was an emptiness in the loss of contact.

Clarke is closing herself off in season four, both emotionally and physically to any feeling that actually matters. She maintains a sexual relationship with Niylah, sure, but there’s a narrative reason it was spelled out by Niylah that what they have is purely physical, and neither of them is looking for anything more. Clarke is keeping her feelings and her fears closely guarded, and my theory as to why that is is that everyone Clarke has loved in a romantic capacity has been killed. Learning that radiation was about to cover the planet once again was enough to force anything Clarke feels for anyone else to the back-burner.

Clarke loves Bellamy. Just as friends? Absolutely not. Monty is Clarke’s friend, and he wasn’t on the List even though he would be objectively more useful than Bellamy in a bunker survival scenario. Yet she wrote Bellamy’s name without hesitation. Clarke loves her mom, but Clarke would let her die to save her people—Clarke said as much to Roan. Yet when Roan mentioned that Bellamy would die, Clarke didn’t hesitate to give up chances for survival for her people in order to save him. Clarke claimed she “stole” the bunker and was refusing to open the doors to the other clans to save humanity. Yet when it came down to the choice of either saving humanity or killing Bellamy, she lowered her gun.

Clarke. Loves. Bellamy.

But Clarke will not act on her feelings for him while she’s still convinced that if she does, he’ll die. She can’t. It’s why she stopped him from completing his confession, “Clarke, if I don’t see you again…” in We Will Rise. Clarke has had enough of deathbed love declarations and is trying her best to protect herself from that pain.

Bellamy, on the other hand, doesn’t want anyone he loves to die without them knowing.

We saw how not telling Octavia he loved her when she could’ve been marching to her death in Die All, Die Merrily affected him. “Even with the world ending, I couldn’t tell her I loved her.”

Bellamy told Octavia how much he loves her in The Other Side.

“Clarke, if I don’t see you again…” is still awaiting a resolution.

Bellamy’s arc in season four has been learning when he can save people, and when he should let people go. Incidentally enough, this is also a continuation from Blood Must Have Blood Part Two when Bellamy let Clarke walk away from Arkadia without a fight.

This has been culminating all season, ever since, “If I’m on that list, you’re on that list.” Even after the events of The Other Side, Bellamy said, “Octavia won’t let anything happen to Clarke, and neither will I.”

Bellamy still believes Clarke is worth saving, and with the new development that only one hundred Sky People can fit in the bunker, that’s important.

In The Four Horsemen, Clarke and Bellamy made a list of one hundred people they were going to save. The list itself may now be obsolete, but the promise they made to each other through it is not.

The Other Side showed us that despite the conflict and angst in which Clarke and Bellamy are currently embroiled, they still love each other.

We have yet to see the resolution of The List plot device, and when we do we’ll see Clarke and Bellamy standing together.

Do I know if the writers are going to give us Romantic Bellarke this season? No. No one who wasn’t involved with production can know that. But I do know that the writers wrote season four unsure about a renewal. They weren’t sure if they were going to get a season five, so they wrote season four with the possibility for addition, but with the plan that the season needed to tie the show together as an ending. Say what you want about the writers, but if there’s one thing they know how to do, it’s create and complete parallels.

In light of this YOI “shit list” drama:

(This is copied from my own tweet thread on this subject. My personal thoughts on being blacklisted are at the very bottom. )

Something like this happened at my high school, and I’ll tell you what it did.

Some seniors in the two graduating classes before mine kept something called the “Senior Hit List.” Sounds horrible, right? It was a google doc full of people’s names. I never had access or had this list explained to me, but it was there and it existed.

Apparently it was just full of people these seniors didn’t like, for really any reason. Those people were ignored and occasionally bullied (on a minor scale, nothing huge. Rich people school.)

Petals for Scars

Title: Petals for Scars

Paring: Pynch (Adam/Ronan)

Rating: T

Summary:   “The flowers are supposed to bloom when you’re ready to fall in love, so he waits every day to watch them wither on his wrist, decaying into the dead thing he’s become.” Soulmate AU.

A/N: Alright, first Raven Cycle fic! (First published fic in a while, actually). It had to be Pynch of course. Also, my first time writing a soulmate AU. This is one I found particularly interesting: where everyone is born with a tattoo of a closed flower bud and it only blooms when you’re emotionally ready to fall in love. I’m trying out a bit of a different style here so I hope you guys like this and a big thanks to those who read this over and gave me the confidence to publish it!
