Drabble 25. “I can’t believe you talked me into this.”
(Requested by @torrence27)
A/N: this is just a silly little thing that shouldn’t be taken too seriously, I don’t actually think Alain would perform in front of a live audience (but I do headcanon that he _can_ sing, though). Also yay, _the shoes_ are back.
“I can’t believe you talked me into this,” Alain sighed. In his left hand he was holding a bag in which a bright yellow pair of shoes were waiting to be used. Mairin had found them for him for this special occasion; Alain would sing something at Sycamore’s birthday party later that day (which was something Mairin had suggested, and after a bit of hesitation Alain had decided to do it. It was his found father’s birthday, after all), and she thought he should wear something nice for the occasion. However, Alain and Mairin’s idea of “something nice” wasn’t quite the same.
“Hey! They are adorable! Don’t try to make it sound like you don’t like them, because I know you do. Besides, aren’t you always wearing Meowth themed* shoes? How is that any better than Psyduck?”
Alain just rolled his eyes at her words and took a worried look at the content of the bag. How could he talk himself out of wearing them? He knew she’d be upset if he just threw them away.
“Please, at least consider wearing them tonight.. Psyduck would be happy if he saw them. Sycamore has promised to bring him to watch you too.”
“Are you sure it’s Psyduck, and not you, who’d be happy?”
Mairin blushed a little, but admitted then:
“OK, we’d both be happy to see them. But you know those aren’t just any shoes to me. They remind me of the time when we were still learning to know each other..”
Even though he didn’t show it, Alain was slightly moved by Mairin’s words, and seeing her make her best Lillipup face made him finally melt.
“Fine. But remember that I’m doing this just for you guys. I won’t take any responsibility if someone comments something about them…”
“Alain, thank you! That means so much to me! You know, I’m sure you are going to create a trend with those shoes…” she flashed her happiest smile at him.
“I was afraid you’d say that,” he sighed.
“So, what are you going to sing tonight? Charizard’s song?” Mairin asked then, referring to a song Alain had written about his beloved starter.
“No, I thought I’d surprise you. You will find out later!” he just waved it off.
“Huh? You haven’t been this mysterious in a long while.”
Mairin looked at him curiously, but let the topic be. When Alain decided you hide something, it was not easy to get any information out of him, she knew that much.
The evening came, and it was Alain’s time to perform. First he sang the traditional Kalosian birthday song to Professor Sycamore, but then he walked to the front of the stage with his microphone and said: “I’m not someone who generally likes to sing or speak in front of an audience, but Professor Sycamore is a very special person to me, which is why I agreed on doing this. But I happen to know I am not the only person in this room who can sing, which is why I’d like to invite my Psyduck shoe twin and probably soon to be ex-girlfriend Mairin on the stage with me. Mairin, come here!”
Mairin looked at him with an incredulous look, but had no choice but to walk on the stage. However, when he whispered something into her ear, her face lit up.
“Yes! Let’s do it!”
After a couple of more whispers Alain announced into his microphone:
“We are going to sing a duet that we have written ourselves. It’s called ‘Psyduck’s love song’, and seeing how much our very own Psyduck right here likes everyone in the lab, particularly of course our birthday hero, inspired us to write it.”
The music started playing, and Mairin thought that he had never seen Alain as relaxed… and happy as in that moment when she looked at him perform his part. He had truly gone a long way since the dark times.
