Hail The Sisterhood: Little Ways to Be Nicer to Your Fellow Girlkind

-When you are walking close behind her at night, give her a smile and a little head nod when she turns around.

-Respect the importance of the female bathroom line. Make friends, give compliments, and move out of the way when applying lippie and somebody needs to wash their hands. Share your hand sanitizer and/or mints.

-Tell some chick on the subway her outfit is awesome.

-This is a little more out there, but if you notice somebody alone at a store trying on shoes or a shirt that looks really good on them, and they are checking the mirror, tell them they should totally buy it. I’ve been tempted to do this but have been too nervous.

-Always warn when there is lipstick on the teeth

-tell little girls they are smart, funny, or interesting instead of pretty. Chances are, they get the pretty thing a lot, but no so much the other stuff.
-in fact, tell big girls the same thing

-If you see a chick getting accosted by some oaf at da bar when she’s by herself, get closer and try to read if she’s uncomfortable. Step in if necessary.

-And that goes for anything: if you see anything weird (a chick being followed, a boyfriend getting aggressive, unwanted attention, too drunk to make rational decisions), keep tabs on it and be ready to make a phone call or shout if necessary.

-Watch her purse when she needs to go to the restroom.

-Even if you don’t know her well and she’s super drunk, help her into a cab.

-When meeting some new girlfriend of a friend, or a new girl at a party, make her feel welcome. Girls going out of their way to be nice to me in new situations always makes me feel really fucking good..because yo, the stigma is still there and girls meeting girls can still be kinda scary to me.

-Tell the girl on the bathroom line going into your stall if there is no toilet paper or the flusher doesn’t work

-Do your part: call people out. Embarrass em a little for saying stupid shit like a SANDWICH JOKE BARF. When somebody calls some girl fat, tell them that’s a stupid thing to say. When somebody makes a negative comment about some girl because she “sleeps around,” lightly call that shit out. If you’re talking about how shitty some lady is and somebody tries to use the “and she fucks everyone” thing as evidence of her shittiness, reply with “man, it doesn’t matter how many people she sleeps with.” You don’t have to run around lecturing people (although go for it if you want to), but you don’t have to be silent, either.

-Practice what you preach, in your real life: if some chick slept with your friend and then your other friend, don’t judge her for it (even if you don’t say anything). If some girl you don’t like wears a revealing outfit, don’t judge her for it (even if it’s just in your head). If some obnoxious lady is hanging around with all your friends, try not to instinctively roll your eyes at her or make shitty comments in her direction or do the popular girl thing of phasing her out of a convo. I’m not saying we do this constantly, but I know how hard it is to break the habit of all the shit we’ve been told about “girl on girl hate” and “catty girl syndrome” and sometimes we slip up. I am telling you to keep a watch on your thoughts and your actions in your everyday life, and try to quell the behaviors you’ve been taught for years, and that it’s okay to not like people for their crap personalities but watch how you act because of that.

-Yo, if you wear them, keep an extra hair tie or bobby pin in your bag. You will eventually be somebody’s savior.

And as always, revel and acknowledge the many beautiful differences in body, mind, experience, and spirit of all lovely women!
