what i love about welcome to the madness it’s that it’s like. yuri finally gets to have fun and skate the way he wants? for his SP he was attributed a song he didn’t feel matched his personality so he could work and improve from there, his FS music was more dynamic but it was still lilia who orchestrated everything with the whole “prima ballerina” thing, and now for his exhibition, he just went, fuck it, fuck all of you, it’s not a competition so i’m gonna skate to a song I actually like, and wear the clothes Iwant, and i’ll have sunglasses and make-up and otabek will be here and you cannot fuckin s t o p m e
If I was about to turn into a zombie, the first thing I would do is put on some roller skates. Either I am unable to stand and therefore can’t ever hurt anyone, or I become the most dangerous zombie ever.
Figure skating jumps are identified by the way the skater takes off the ice. Here are simple ways to tell them apart, using layman-friendly terms.
There are 6 different types of jumps (in order of base value): Toe loop (T), Salchow (S), Loop (Lo), Flip (F), Lutz (Lz), Axel (A).
Since Yuzuru rotates anti-clockwise in the air, these examples are for anti-clockwise jumps. For clock-wise jumpers, the left and right would reversed.
EDIT: The toe, lutz and flip can look confusingly similar. Just remember, for the toe, the skater rotates away from the foot on the ice and for the flip and lutz, the skater rotates towards the foot on the ice.
My blog is strictly about real life figure skating. If you are a Yuri on Ice account and you like or reblog my stuff I will immediately start judging you on how incredibly cool it is that you have discovered a whole new interest thanks to watching anime and have managed to stick with it this far and are eager to learn more about it.

As a YOI fandom grandparent, I felt it was my duty to write out all the fandom explosions for the newer fans who weren’t there to witness the big bang and gradual week-by-week creation of this universe. All the arguments, people blowing things out of proportion, blaming characters, death theories, awesome fans clearing up miscommunications, YOI breaking the internet…
This isn’t a post to call out specific people on their arguments and theories - I’ll stay respectfully away from restarting flames and picking fights, thankyouverymuch. Rather, this is an overview of the topics and conflicting views that swept across hundreds and thousands of people and prompted strong reactions. I’m doing this now, because I know that 6 months later, 1 year later, 3 years later, etc. there will be new fans who will have many of the same exact arguments.
We’ve been there and done that.
I see fans now who say things without knowing where the spelling/quote comes from, or who don’t realize how much has changed, or don’t know why there are certain perceptions of characters. So here’s a little bit of passing down history.
I also don’t want to forget the crazy ride this was. Laugh with me at the silly theories; smile with me at how deeply YOI has impacted our lives.
For those of us old-timers, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Remember when…
—————- (Large arguments will be italicized or bold. Special thanks to @sachiro for reminding me of a bunch of stuff I missed, and looking over the draft in its various stages of being written and edited.)
Idea that there would be a love triangle (Yuri P.–Yuri K.–Victor)
Some fans started spelling Yuri Katsuki with two “u” in order to tell them apart.
Victuri ship name created for Victor x Yuri K. (in a comment to the PV)
“lol ‘Yuri’ on Ice? Where are all the lesbians?”
“When it said Yuri on Ice, I thought we would get girls. Y’know what I mean?”
“Yuri on Ice? More like Yaoi on Ice! amiright?”
J.J. misspelling (English spelling “Jean Jack” instead of French Canadian “Jean-Jacques”)
you can see the remnants of this in the audience banners during the episodes, but it was corrected to “Jean-Jacques” on the official website and the in-show text
Phichit x Seung-gil ship created (there was more art for this than for Victor x Yuuri)
Victor vs. Viktor spelling arguments
Although “Victor” is the official spelling and seen in-show, people argued that the creators are wrong and that we fans know better than them about Russian culture - thus the “Viktor” spelling was born.
People argued back that spelling is subjective and you can spell a name multiple ways and still be correct - thus transliterating his Russian name into English as “Victor” would be just as acceptable.
The YOI wiki held fast for a time on using official spellings and information from the official website, but the transition of power led to a new team that started using agreed-upon info rather than solely using official info. “Viktor” replaced “Victor” on the website.
this change from “Victor” to “Viktor” on the wiki happened around episode 2~3, but the arguments were in the page comments since episode 1 – with moderators explaining their reasoning with sticking to official sources.
Victor is a flirtatious over-the-top character who will seduce Yuuri
Victor is the overwhelming seme and Yuuri is the shy whimpering uke.
I’m not just talking about irl meta. I’m talking about in-universe, in YOI Russia and probably the rest of the world too, Viktor Nikiforov is a meme.
At some point, the Skating World’s Living Legend got a picture of himself cropped at just the right angle to offer no context and excellent memeing potential.
It’s probably a picture of him with the longer hair and it’s flying out behind him as he does an over dramatic lunge. There are probably several different versions of it. Someone put ‘Walk walk fashion baby” over it in red comic sans. Another post is circulating where the picture is posted below an audio clip of “I’M A BIRD MOTHERFUCKER I’M A BIRD.”
Mostly it’s a reaction image. One of the more popular ones is When your friends ask you why you always gotta be so dramatic
The meme is an old picture and many people don’t even associate Viktor with it, given that his hairstyle and bodytype have changed so much since then. Sometimes he will be recognized as over dramatic figure skater, but only because the information is free to anyone who visits Know Your Meme.
Over Dramatic Figure Skater is a 2005 image of Russian figure skater Viktor Nikiforov. The image is taken from a recording of Nikiforov’s Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien program at the 2005-2006 Junior Grand Prix Final.
Sometimes Yuuri will watch Viktor do something completely ridiculous and the thought will strike, apropos of nothing, that he is literally married to a meme.
amongst all the recent interviews from magazines (pash!, crea etc.) and the yoi event that just happened today we find out officially:
yuuri bought BOTH the rings.
yuuri and victor are soulmates.
victor ignores JJ not because he dislikes him but he’s the type to not remember or pay attention to things he’s not interested in.
victor is not balding victor is NOT BALDING LOLL he’s just got a high hairline.
mysterious man (aka chris’s boyfriend) is from the Swiss ice skating federation and was once an ice dancer. his relationship with chris is unconfirmed. he is nicknamed masumi by kubo because he resembles masumi hayami from glass mask.
during kubo’s signing session a fan found out that victor knew of yuuri before the banquet and knew yuuri was his fan through his skating (since as a fan, yuuri incorporates some of victor’s skating style/elements).
otabek DJs for fun, is a cool street boy and has mischievous friends.
