some old stuff from season one i never got to post

4

I’m a wee bit embarrassed,as the leader guy said “no selfies”, which doesn’t mean “no subtle pics ” to me, but he clarified that to no pics for the second half, so I’ve just got these.

Una was lovely, just a ray of sunshine, and said that Rupert was the naughtiest on set, and would nudge her (she mimed falling over) and tell rude jokes.

Jonathan I asked if he thought Anderson had a mental breakdown over Sherlock’s death/return, and he said yes absolutely, and then implied -implied only- maybe some repressed uh…feelings for Sherlock. Said “strong feelings, right from the start, not just the competitive aspect, but VERY STRONG FEELINGS” and “well we don’t know what was going on there….” He also said that he imagined Anderson now as trying to get his job back, with not much luck.

Wanda Ventam was lively and sharp as a tack, said that Ben was moving in October and described their babies (laughingly said the 4 month old boy has “alien eyes” like Ben). Briefly described Ben’s daily workouts of an hour, and what Dr. Srange producers required. Her hubby was sweet but very quiet, and said that Steven had the idea for them to be in Sherlock but ran it by Ben first.

Mark said that he always assumed they’d do more seasons, and anything else was “click bait” that he never said. I asked him - nicely!- if he thought using things like the Garridebs as throw-away references in the last episode took them if the table for future use, and he said no, and that “the big emotional moment, it’s there” or something like that (he rambles a bit), so I’m not sure if he meant the hug, or something in the future.

Major Sholto was funny and loved being there, saying repeatedly that they were a big family, as it’s the same crew, writers etc on many shows, and so he was invited in to be family, and now the convention was like a reunion 11 thousand miles from home.

Sue was smart and warm, and described trying to get another season going as “well I leave it a while, then I start calling them and saying sooo when are you free?” Also said stuff she’s said before, I’ll skip it.

Mark also said about the skull pic that the original artist was charging them a fortune so they just had Arwel make them one. Arwel pointed out that their budget was actually quite limited, and that 4.3 the “Bond lair” was his vision, and had to be done inexpensively. Sue also made some brief mention of having a small budget, so this is obv. a big thing.

Andrew Scott seemed a bit shy, like he was pushing himself past it, or maybe rather private? Great Irish(?) accent. I asked if he was thrilled to be asked back for 4.3 and he replied oh god yeah, especially with that entrance. Interestingly, he said the pool scene was never meant to be shot, it was written off-the-cuff as audition stuff, but then they liked it so much they wrote it in. Moriarity’s original line was “ that’s what people do, they grow old an die and blah blah etc” but he (Andrew) shortened it with that amazing delivery and that’s how it stayed.

Ok, must sleep now but if I remember more tomorrow I’ll post it!

voltron season 3 episode predictions
  • shiro falls out of the ceiling tiles and into allura’s arms, along with 15 armed rebels and a couple of vegetables from earth. the entire episode is just him screaming, allura screaming, the paladins screaming, and the black lion kicking them all out. they never really figure out how exactly shiro got into the ceiling tiles but shiro says it has something to do with the vegtables.
  • the reunion episode between matt holt and shiro is just a complicationed dance routine with sam and pidge looking on in a mixture of shame and contempt. it has been months since they last saw each other. how do they know this. the entire dance is just the whole episode.
  • lotor is just a tiny alien in a huge mech suit, and once the paladins figure that out they put him in a glass jar and now hes a decortive item in the castle. the joke is that youre supposed to move it every time you see him to freak out someone. this ends badly as keith once woke up with it shoved down his shirt, and all of lance’s creams got replaced by several bad duplications of the jar. pidge is a master at this game as they can crawl through vents and place the jar of screaming prince lotor anywhere undetetced.
  • shiro’s makeup bag gets replaced by alien substances and winds up geting posioned because he used some crushed berries as eyeliner, and the episode is him runnin though the castle, arm activated and destroying a couple of walls looking for his damned eyeliner. allura helps.
  • hunk and pidge are working on shiros arm (which needed maintenance or something) and they discover it can be turned into any body part. they accidently turn it into a foot and cant change it back so its just shiro walking around the castle like normal only its a foot.
  • the cow, which had wandered off on its own in the castle, gets an entire episode thats just from the cow’s point of view. it raids the kitchen at night and loves the food goo. it crawls though the vents and often scares the heck out of pidge. it has a collection of stuff it stole, like several of keiths knifes, lances moisturizer, a rolling stones album, several pens and socks, an entire altean ballgown, and coran’s ponytail bands. prince lotor in a jar eventually winds up in it but no one cares.
  • lance does DOFA deez nuts on allura at least once. the episode consists of pidge and lance memeing the other paladins.
  • at one point someone adopts an alien cat. it hates hunk but loves keith. keith hates it and hunk loves it.
  • “every time you kill zarkon, theres a tinier zarkon that you can kill eaiser behind it. after you kill the last one, you become a god.” “lance put the redbull coffee down and put your shirt back on before i throw you into the pool.”
  • hunk swears, and everyone just stares. they suspect that hes a galra in disguise and try to anbush him while hes making cookies.
  • the paladins get into another time loop only when they get out of it, shiro and matt are 10 year olds, hunk lance and keith are maybe 4, and pidge is an infant. the episode is just allura, coran, and samuel holt just taking care of the children with their giant robot cats that also seemed to revert to kittens. lotor in a jar makes an appearence but its just him screaming for a couple minutes.
Clonepocalypse 2k17

Alright kids listen up, since this is the last season of Orphan Black let’s bring back an old tradition; the clonepocalypse!

What’s that?

Well my friend, on the day of the premier (June 10th) we all change our URL’s to a clone name (saving our original ones of course) and act as that clone for the day or just post funny orphan black jokes. I couldn’t find examples but you can search ‘clonepocalypse’ and it might come up with the posts from years ago.URL’s can be anything from sarahmanning989 to ferdinand123 so long as it relates to orphan black then its all cool

Why?

It’s loads of fun, just following anyone and everyone who has a clone or other character as their url. It allows people to follow each other no matter how many followers they have because we’re all just here showing our love for our show. It also creates hype for the upcoming season and since it’s the fifth and final trip, why not get pumped up about it.

What kind of stuff should I post?

Anything!! That cophine fan fic you’ve been working on ,the manip you’ve created but never got around to posting, some classic orphan black memes! And as it is the final trip let’s try something new: You could write a thank you note to the cast/crew/clone club in general to show how much the show has meant to you and tag it as #ThankYouOB . (I actually want you guy’s opinion on this because idk if it should be before the final season or at the end, send me an ask with your opinion)

Alright I’m in, when does the clonepocalypse start?

As clone club spreads all over the world it’s hard to set an exact time, so as soon as your clock hits 12 midnight on 10th June 2017 you can get the party started!

What should I tag the posts as?

Because not everyone has solely orphan black blogs following them, we will be using the tag clonepocalypse or clonepocalypse2k17. This will also help us find new friends on the day and get in touch with each other

But what if I don’t want to join in?

That’s totally fine my friend!

So that’s the general idea of the event. I just thought it would be nice to connect with each other one last time and celebrate our beloved show! Happy season 5!

Okay, so, I don’t normally post my own things, I usually just reblog other people’s wonderful and, frankly, amazing stuff, but I need to get this out.

I’ve been reading lots on how Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ratings are bad, and to be honest, the second and third seasons were not the best. But the show needs to be renewed because here’s the thing: girls need heroes too. Not just Captain America or Iron Man - they need female heroes. They need to know that heroes don’t always have powers. Melinda May never needed powers to become a legend, she honed those skills herself. She became a hero because she chose to be one, and Grant Ward was not a hero, despite the many chances given to him, because he chose to not be one. Daisy, or Skye, was a hero before she even got her powers because despite her past with the Rising Tide and an abusive childhood, she chose to do some good.

Girls need to know that being weak and breaking down is alright because it is a human thing and not a silly, girlish weakness. They need to know that silence can mean strength and dresses don’t stop you from fighting. They need to know that being a scientist, a person who loves learning, does not equate to having square glasses and dull clothes and no friends. They need to know that there are different kinds of strength and bravery and love. They need to know that you can have accents on your tongue and colour on your skin but it doesn’t matter because you are more than what men label you. They need to know that they don’t need a man to complete or define them, that they are extraordinary by themselves. They need to know that despite everything, despite the impossible, they can succeed because the only person you need to believe in you is yourself. They need strong women to look up to so they can learn to become them.

I’m fifteen years old. Asian. A second-year university student in a developing country with an anxiety disorder. It means everything to me to have an Asian female character to be able to look up to and to have so many other well-rounded female characters. When I feel like I’m too small, too young to be in university, and people call me a nerd, I think of Jemma Simmons and her two phDs in fields Coulson can’t pronounce and I smile at them. When I walk through dark alleys filled with shady men on my way home and my mom tells me to be careful, I think of Melinda May and her fearlessness and I become a little braver. When people tell me that I can’t possibly be smart enough to pass a class, that everything I say is only a bravado, I remember Peggy Carter and tell them I know my own value. I pass by them three weeks later with a certificate full of A’s. When I feel like I can’t possibly go on I think about Bobbi Morse unwilling to apologize for what she believed was right and if she can be that strong, I can at least be half as strong. I think about being different and Daisy Johnson will remind be that being different can mean making a difference, and as long as I’m showing people that a tiny, little Asian woman can kick their asses in class, then I’m making a difference because I’m showing them that we can, that I belong here as much as they do. And that is what Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. shows too. Or at least, the part I love most about it. The strength, the diversity, the equality, of women. And that is why, when people ask me what S.H.I.E.L.D. is about, I say, “protection.” Because S.H.I.E.L.D. protects me from the darkness of life, it gives me a place to fall back on, a place to remind me that I am strong enough to go through each day, and when I do go through each day, it is those ladies who poke my shoulders and nudge my chin up, giving me the confidence to look at life in the eye and tell it that I am more than whatever it throws at me.

Since I can’t do much to affect the ratings from where I live, I suppose I’ll just let my fondness and my attachments to these character out and hope that abc realizes how fundamentally important it is to have a show which gives girls the strong women and the representation they need to look up to, and that despite past mistakes, season 4 (especially 4x15) has been incredible.

———-

Small addition cause when last night I posted this little rant I did not expect so many notes but I’d like to add that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. also has female antagonists, it doesn’t portray women in black and white, good or bad. The characters are so completely human and not exaggerated. It portrays women as they are. Jemma has panic attacks and Daisy made some wrong choices but they are both more than capable of saving the day using only their minds. It shows that bad things happen sometimes and you can be forced to make hard choices and all you can do is choose what do to next and that doesn’t make you evil or bad. It shows that women are capable of being villains, that we’re not just angels. And that is important because it reminds girls that being good is a choice, that we have the potential to be otherwise, that we can make men fear us as much as we can make them respect us. It shows that sometimes we make bad choices and people will think the worst of us for doing what was right but despite our human flaws we need to remember to put on our own oxygen masks first before trying to fix things. There’s a post somewhere about how Melinda May left Providence in 1x19 and she left for herself because the environment was too toxic and that speaks a lot to me because it reminds me to take care of myself and my anxiety first and leaving a place that no longer is healthy is alright. I’ve found my social anxiety taking hold of me less since I’ve found strong women, and more specifically, Asian ones too, to look up to. Because they show me that it’s all human to feel like that, and they have so many flaws but they can also save the world, and most important, save themselves. Real or not, the characters have had a profound impact on me. For that I have to thank the writers and the amazing actors. To the person who said to tweet this to the creators, by all means, go ahead since I don’t have twitter. But I realised I didn’t thank the writers and the actors last night when they’ve given me those wonderful characters, both the women and the men.

Shady hotel business.

WARNING: This post is looooooong. If you want a quick fix, this isn’t the story for you. If you want to dive deep into the layers of corruption where it’s all about the little things, then please read on. Also, I’m fond of lists.

This happened two years ago. I was twenty and a recent university dropout. I needed a year to empty my head, recover from imminent burnout, and make some money to help support my single mom and my younger sister (who’d just given birth with no father in the picture). I was a very insecure person at the time. I really wanted to work, but without a degree life sucks balls… until I got contacted by Mr B.

Hey, if you're not too busy, i was wondering what podcasts you listen to/would recommend? I started listening to the bright sessions and Mabel after seeing you reblog/post about them and i seem to have such trouble finding new ones to listen to. Thanks!

aI AM NEVER TOO BUSY TO TALK ABOUT PODCASTS.

Also, I listen to a HUGE number and I have been meaning to make a list.

so OK, here we go! /Mario

http://mabelpodcast.com is amazing, it’s an eerie story about a woman trying to get in touch with the estranged granddaughter of the woman she takes care of as a live-in nurse. There’s ghosts, or faeries, or something else eerie.

http://thebrightsessions.com is a sweet, light podcast about a bunch of kids (high school and college age) who have superpowers and go to therapy. There’s a thriller element, lots of queer rep, and tons of in-world documents/blogs/etc created.

http://www.kingfallsam.com/ is about the radio hosts of the overnight call-in show in King Falls, a town where the weird happens.  Reminds me of Eerie, Indiana, if you ever saw that show.

http://withinthewires.com is by the Welcome to Night Vale people and it’s a creepy horror story about an oppressive regime and women escaping from it, and sisters and love and memory and identity.

https://arsparadoxica.com/ is a cold-war-style spy show about time travel and accidental history and science and people who are broken in interesting ways.

http://www.albasalix.com/ is a silly fairy-tale comedy that reminds me in all the best ways of a great sitcom. It’s about the grumpy Royal Physician to the King in a fantasy land and the idiots that plague her.

http://woodenovercoats.com/ reminds me instead of the great old British comedies like Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served? It’s about a struggling funeral home on a tiny island and is lightly surreal. (It’s narrated by a mouse, for starters).

http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/panoply/the-message The Message and Life After are each one-season shows on this same stream. The Message is about a dangerous sound/music being studied; lif-e.af/ter is about people who live on via their social media profiles after death.

http://iriscasefiles.tumblr.com only has two eps, but it’s a cool adventure-y mystery in outerspace about a biologist and, I think, a revolution.

http://www.wolf359.fm/ is incredible, it’s about a small crew on a deep-space science mission that quickly goes bad – but it’s funny and charming and full of found family.

http://www.thepenumbrapodcast.com/ is a genre-bending semi-noir podcast about a grand hotel just this side of nowhere and the people that inhabit it.

http://thebridgepod.com is a tale of the transcontinental bridge, a once-grand project that has fallen to ruin, the mystery of what happened to those who once lived there, and deep-sea monsters and the eco-terrorists who love'em.

http://pleasuretownshow.com/ is about a turn of the century town in Oklahoma that was once envisioned as a hedonistic utopia but quickly fell to the vaguarities of man.

http://thrillingadventurehour.com/ now rarely updated, but with tons of back episodes – an old-school radio play type show.  The two stories that anchor it are Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars (space cowboys!) and Beyond Belief (glamorous NYC couple drinks, encounters the supernatural, amuses themselves by resolving problems) but there are quite a few serial shows.

http://www.eos10.com/ is about a couple of doctors on a space station that serves as an intergalactic travel hub, and is silly and ridiculous and worth it.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-elysium-project/id955156631?mt=2 is about folks who were experimented on and given strange powers, and have now escaped from the people who had them captive.  Really interesting take on how the powers work, IMO, and definitely scary sometimes.

http://rustyquill.com/the-magnus-archives/ is a weekly reading from, well, The Magnus Archives, a collection of eerie, horror-tastic documents in possession of a group that specializes in studying the weird.

http://www.archive81.com/ is also about both the library and librarian of a weird collection.  I stopped listening at the beginning of season 2 because of some pretty explicitly on-tape torture, but before that it was good.

https://www.lessergodspodcast.com/ is about the Final Five – the last generation of humans after a reproductive apocalypse.  They live in decadent fame as the world ends and people desperately try to create more people.  I wish this was fully acted rather than read in-perspective, I have a hard time keeping characters apart sometimes, but it’s good stuff in terms of world-building.

https://greaterbostonshow.com/ reminds me of a slightly more serious Douglas Adams, it’s a slightly surreal show about people in Boston and…weirdness.

http://www.returnhomepodcast.com/ is about an ordinary guy who returns home to find his dad has forgotten him, his mother is missing, and the Society of Shadows needs him.  The writing starts out pretty cliche but it gets better as the show goes on.

http://www.ourfaircity.com/ is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi… I’m not sure what to call it.  It’s not a comedy, but it is weirdly funny.  It’s not horror, but it can be horrific.  I have audio processing issues and this one gives me trouble, but when I can puzzle it through it’s usually worth it.

http://www.limetownstories.com/ is so so so good and I so hope for another season – a decade ago a scientific collective/town disappeared completely, to a person.  A reporter related to one of them investigates what could happen.  Heart-poundingly scary in all the best ways.

http://pnwstories.com/ has The Black Tapes, Tanis, and Rabbits, all presented as very ordinary NPR-style podcasts about weird and mysterious things – a collection of supernatural events that a scientist is studying, a place/state of mind/eerie thing called Tanis, and an ARG/real-world game.  I like’em well enough but they lean on the same tropes, so pick one and stick with it IMO.

http://www.lorepodcast.com/ is more folklore than fiction, but it’s good storytelling about mysterious and creepy and lovely things, so I think it belongs here.

On my yet-to-be-listened-to list:

http://www.hectorvsthefuture.com/

http://www.tarynmaxximilliandafoe.com/welcome-to-mollyville/

I… think that’s everything fictional/storytelling that I’ve got right now.

SHIRO’S BIRTHDAY LIVESTREAM!! With Josh Keaton!

now that the stream’s over, here’s a recap on what happened!

What we’ve learned!
-Josh actually styled his hair like Shiro’s for the stream. It was amazing.
-If josh were a tree he’d be a japanese cherry blossom tree. Shiro would be a plumeria (whatever that one is)
-Shiro’s hairstyle is definitely something he does himself. There’s no way it just happens. lol
-voicing Shiro losing his cool was a highlight for Josh!
-Josh wasn’t sure what to expect with Shiro’s character when he first took on the job, only that he was excited because he grew up watching Voltron as a child.
-Besides Shiro, who would Josh pick to be? He said a cross between Lance and Pidge.
-Josh’s favorite lines as Shiro have been “Form Voltron!” and “Go, be great.” among others that are very inspirational.
-When asked about dealing with any difficulties recording, Josh said it wasn’t difficult but doing ADR can be tricky since he likes to do it on the fly.
-Josh gives tips and advice for those who want to try getting into voice acting!
-To get into Shiro’s voice, Josh likes to do forty push-ups before recording and he does some other elements of physicality, such as keeping excellent posture, to get into Shiro’s character.
-One of Josh’s favorite memories about Voltron is the announcement at Wondercon, it always makes him smile.
-He was then given some art that was posted online, and offered cupcakes.

Overall, it was a super short stream, but fun nonetheless, further details below the cut!

Update: Sherlolly: A Male Newbie’s Perspective.

So…the long awaited Sherlolly: A Male Newbie’s Perspective, is on it’s way. Promise!! I had no idea my son and his friend’s comments would be received with so much interest. Live and learn, right? Truth be told, their response to His Last Vow wasn’t nearly as interesting as their previous thoughts. In my humble opinion. They watched with rapt attention, and offered - quite vocally - their thoughts on the overall episode, which was far more serious than TEH and TSoT. I’ll finish it up over the weekend.

In the meantime, for those who asked, and because it’s still fresh in my mind – here’s a few conversations that took place amongst my daughter and sister, after The Final Problem. Parts of the conversations are slightly paraphrased, although I did have a chat record with @swjmart about those conversations immediately afterward, while they were fresh in my memory.

I feel a bit silly posting this, but given all the crap Sherlollians have put up with over the years, I wanna add to this ship and see it turn into an Arc. Just sayin’.

I’ll start with my sister, who is the quintessential casual viewer. She didn’t start watching Sherlock until this past autumn, when she binged on Netflix. Lucky girl – she did not put herself through an agonizing three year hiatus. Whether she realizes it or not – she digs Sherlolly! Yay!

It all started with a late morning phone call….

Sister (which will be referred to by ’S’): So, did you watch Sherlock?

Me: Surely you jest.

S: Just thought I’d ask. Did you like it?

Me: Of course. You?

S – Oh gosh yes! T (her hubby), sat on the edge of his seat the whole time, even covered his face in a few places.

Me: God, he’s such a pussy.

S: What?

Me: Never-mind. So, what’d ya think.

S: It was excellent – I loved the whole season, but wish there was more than three episodes.

Me: Welcome to fandom.

S: Pardon?

Me: Nothing. Continue.

S: Can you even imagine having a sister that brilliant and insane? That was so heartbreaking. Really, T almost cried.

Me:  I know, completely mind-blowing, although there were clues in previous episodes that some shit went down. (silently begging her to get to the good part about Molly and Sherlock saying I love you, but not wanting to be overly obvious.)

S: I wish you’d stop swearing. (sister does not swear ~le sigh~)

Me: Do you know that recent studies showed people who swear —

S: Whatever, P. Those clues never indicated a child was murdered.

Me: I know, but even though it was ‘technically’ murder, I don’t think that was the intention of five year old Eurus. She wanted her brother to play.

Me: Hmmm. Weren’t you even a bit disappointed that nothing was said or shown about Victor Trevor’s family, or any investigation? (I’m not being serious, of course, just baiting for opinion)

S: No, it’s not that kind of show. It’s not CSI Sherlock.

(now I get to go in for what I really want to know!)

Me: But there were so many things left unresolved!

S: Like what?

Me: What do you mean 'like what?’ I thought you said you watched.

S: T and I thought the season finale was great – there was nothing left unresolved. I don’t know if they’re going to make another season, because all the actors are so in demand, but if not – I don’t know how it could have ended more perfectly. The only thing I’m really sad about is Mary dying. She was such an interesting character and I liked her a lot.

Me: You didn’t get put off that she shot Sherlock? At one point I found it very hard to believe how easily she was forgiven.

S: Of course shooting the protagonist was dramatic, but he didn’t mind, why should you?

Me: What?

S: You do know these are fictional characters, right?

Me: Don’t be ridiculous.

S: These characters are very dark and most of the time suicidal. Sherlock was on drugs probably all of season three and most of season 4, so of course he didn’t have a problem forgiving Mary. He probably admired her for it. They’re fun to watch, but you can’t think of them as normal – they’re not. Except for Molly. She is the only relatable character. I think she’s T’s favorite part of the show. It’s just too bad they didn’t give her more.

Me: Agree. But…but what about the Molly / Sherlock phone call dealio? I mean, what happened there? The only thing we got after that was a 2 second montage of Molly walking into Baker St.

S: So?

Me: So?! What happened? One minute she’s crying, Sherlock’s smashing a coffin and then she’s all smiles. WTF?

S: They’re not going to show that. I thought you preferred British television over American? British television is always more subtle.

Me: I know, but still – they could have given something more than a stupid montage.

S: They got married. That wasn’t hard to figure out.

Me: What? LOL!

S: Molly has always loved him, anyone who watched the show could see that. Sherlock is probably the most emotionally constipated fictional character ever written - Spock doesn’t count because he’s Vulcan - and he finally realized he loves her too. Probably always has. They’ve been building this up from the beginning. Didn’t you ever pay attention to all the stuff he pulled? Sabotaging her date before he knew that guy was his enemy? He told her to give up on relationships. It’s not like he was joking, although it was funny. He’s literal about that stuff. He didn’t want her to date because he couldn’t cope, it was about him, not her. T really loved that part – wished he would have thought about it when he was trying to date me. Then there’s Sherlock’s temper tantrums, and getting her to do things he could do himself. It’s typical stuff men do when they’re jealous or stupid. They think they’re being smart, like no one can see through all their crap.

Me: Looking at it that way, he probably broke up her engagement, too.

S: Oh, you know he did. T called it right away. What episode was that, where he told her how important she was and basically had eye sex with her. If it had been any other woman they probably would have burst out laughing. What a guy move.

Me: Ummm, the one where he came back, that one? And, btw, I wouldn’t have laughed if Benedict Cumberbatch was staring into my eyes.

(okay, this is literally the most surreal convo I’ve ever had with my sister. I had. no. idea. she even thought about stuff like this.)

S: Well, he’s not Benedict Cumberbatch, he’s Sherlock, lol! Not real life, remember? And, yes, that’s the episode. After that scene T said, 'her engagement just ended.’ Thought it was a smooth move. I’m telling you, this is typical guy stuff.

Me: He probably caused her to doubt herself.

S: It doesn’t matter, it wouldn’t have lasted anyway. It was over when Sherlock came back.

Me: So, why do you think they got married?

S: How old is Sherlock and these guys? Mid to late 30’s? What do you think he’s going to do? Start dating? He’s not going to do that. He can barely cope with what he does feel and Molly is patient and independent enough to be his partner and she’s not needy. Which is good because he is.

Me: So you didn’t see her as weak with unrequited love?

S: Where would you get that idea? Who cares if she’s loved him the whole time. It’s not like she sat around waiting for him to do something about it. She has life and must have felt he cared too, otherwise she wouldn’t have stuck around. She’s not one of our girlfriends who has no self-will or independent thought, and lives in a constant state of angst because her boyfriend or husband is horrible and we have to constantly tell her to leave. It’s not real life. Besides, Molly is sane and helps him connect to people and the world, like John does. Speaking of which, wasn’t it the episode before this one where John gave Sherlock that big speech about how a relationship would make him complete?

Me: Yep, he did. But, he was talking about Irene Adler.

S: Oh, she doesn’t matter.

Me: No?

S: He doesn’t love her. She’s every guy’s fantasy, it’s not real. T still believes Drew Barrymore will adore him if they ever met. Keep dreaming, big guy. Anyway, the writer’s set up some big dramatic relationship thing with John’s speech. So, you knew something was going to happen between Sherlock and Molly.

Me: It’s called foreshadowing.

S: Sherlock is completely ignorant about how to do relationships and love. He trusts Molly with his feelings and heart – she kept his secret for two years about being dead - and now that he knows how much he loves her, why would he let her go? He wouldn’t do that. The only way to keep her around is to marry her. At least that’s what I think. Or, maybe they live together forever…although if I were Molly he’d have to come to my place because it’s so much nicer and she can make him leave when he’s annoying or too clingy. Besides, his place is too dangerous and it’s more like an office than a home.

Me: I just read an interview this morning from Steven Moffat, the show’s creator and writer, who said that Molly was wounded by what happened, but Sherlock was devastated. He went on to say Sherlock apologized, Molly called him a 'bastard’ and they got over it. Then he added that Molly probably had a drink and shagged someone. What the hell, right?

S: That doesn’t sound like the character I saw, but then you probably shouldn’t take stuff like this so literally. I’m sure Sherlock apologized and you could see he was devastated. She almost died – I mean, I was holding my breath and wondering if they were going to kill her. Honestly, that was the most heart-pounding part of the whole episode. Of course he was devastated, but Molly was really hurt. She thought he was making fun of her and they both thought that whatever they did have together was over at the end of that scene. Maybe what the writer is saying is that they had sex together? That would make more sense after something this horrific. Wouldn’t you? I know it’s not real life, but if you were Sherlock and realized you loved someone and that person almost died, those emotions are powerful, overwhelming and mess with your mind. They probably had sex first and then he told her what happened. You know, like couples have sex after they argue.

Me: I didn’t realize you were such a romantic.

S: The whole show is a romance, with some mysteries thrown in. It’s not Hollywood, it’s very subtle. I thought you minored in English composition and literature? You should know this stuff.

Me: I do, but just thought I’d get your take. Hey, let me ask you one more thing…there’s this idea that John moved back into Baker St.

S: Why would he do that?

Me: Probably because he did that in the books, only it was very different because they (S / J) were much older and Mary had already been dead for a long time. Of course John didn’t have a kid in the books, at least not that anyone knew of. Although, I think there’s some pastiches that suggest, or give him, a child.

S: I can’t think why that character would do something so dumb and irresponsible. He’s smarter than that. Baker St isn’t safe for a baby and why would he or Sherlock want a baby around all the time?  It’s Sherlock’s office with a bedroom. His kitchen is contaminated and he keeps body parts around. They meet clients and really dangerous people come there. Plus, John has his own house. If he did anything, maybe he should experience what single mother’s go through and have to take care of his child after working all day and saying 'no’ to things because he has to put his child first. I understand people helping out right after Mary died. Mom had all kinds of help after our dad died, remember? But, this isn’t RL and he and Sherlock have their 'the game is on’ thing, so the baby is going to be sent to be with others.

*** Pretty much the end of of our convo, unless someone wants to hear about how we planned an outing at Sephora and met for lunch…. Probably not, right?

Phone call from daughter, who is known as 'K’ – another casual viewer.

K: So, did you watch?

Me: Of course. Watching it again, to be honest. What did you think? Just give me the Molly / Sherlock low down.

K: Wow, he really lost his shit, didn’t he?

Me: Yup.

K: I honestly thought they were going to kill Molly.

Me: I was a bit worried too. So, what do you think ended up happening between them? We were only given a few seconds.

K: They got married or living together.

Me: Have you been talking with your aunt?

K: No, why?

Me: Because she said the same thing.

K: It’s the only thing that makes sense.

Me: Why do people keep saying that?

K: What else is Sherlock gonna to do? He could barely do stuff without her before he knew he loved her, and now that he knows, it’s not like he’d let her disappear.

Me: Wow, I guess something’s just aren’t that obvious to me. (just kidding, of course)

K: Yeah, well, you don’t watch much television, so maybe you don’t notice stuff.

Me: You don’t think they’d date for a while, that sort of thing?

K: Why? Like Mike (her boyfriend) said – Sherlock just got played by two women.

Me: I don’t understand.

K: The evil sister set up the test for Sherlock to get Molly to say I Love You, right?

Me: Yeah.

K: But, that’s not what it was about. Molly wouldn’t say it until he said it first, because she thought he was playing a game and making fun of her. But, his sister had been watching Molly and maybe watching Sherlock too and knew Molly loved him but would never say 'I love you’ unless Sherlock said it first. But, Sherlock is thinking he just has to get Molly to say it, when the real game was about getting him to say it. But, he’s not going to say it, he won’t even consider it, because he’s an emotional dwarf. So, the only way to get him to say it was knowing Molly wouldn’t, thereby applying the appropriate pressure needed for him to grow the fuck up and get some balls. Well, that’s what Mike said, but I agree. Molly didn’t know she was being played, but his theory still works.

Me: So, his sister played Dolly Levi.

K: No, she’s just bat-shit, fucking crazy and didn’t care. She wanted the thrill of the ride. She doesn’t understand emotional attachment

Me: But, why married?

K: Maybe not married, but they’re definitely living together in a committed relationship for life. Sherlock isn’t capable of anything less. I mean, he could be, he is smart, but I doubt it. God, mom, he railroads her all the time. He would literally implode if she went off and found someone else. I mean, think about the few genius people you know. They have no idea how to do shit and need normal people to help them.

Me: I don’t think he’s that bad off.

K: Maybe not, but he was shooting up all last season because he couldn’t cope with the changes with his friends. John got married, Molly was engaged. He was able to be part of John’s life, but not Molly’s. And he spent most of this season high as a kite. He almost overdosed on the jet when they shipped him off for killing that guy.

Me: Part of that was because Mary asked him to save John.

K: Yeah, but not the jet part. He doesn’t cope with loss and there were other ways to help John. He was dying, mom – headed toward renal failure. Maybe now that he has those memories about his sister, he’ll be able to do better and won’t have the need to self-anesthesize. Plus, he finally understands he loves Molly, like really loves her and being with her helps him stay grounded – she keeps him centered. It takes a village to raise Sherlock.

Me: True dat. So the coffin part was pretty intense.

K: It was. But, he was scared, emotionally vulnerable and couldn’t manage what he was feeling. He had to vent and the coffin was handy. I also think he realized how much he’s hurt Molly. Not just the phone call, but all the other stuff he’s done. She couldn’t trust him and almost died because of it. He got to see what he caused, the consequences of his bullshit. He didn’t know that. He never connected the emotional dots about why she couldn’t say 'I love you’. So, yes, I think he married her and probably will never, ever do another thing to cause her any doubt. His life is too dangerous to put his bullshit on her, leaving her not knowing when he’s being a douche and doing his fakey mcfakerson shit, or being serious. And, why wouldn’t Molly want marriage or a committed life with him? She’s been on the ride since the beginning and it’s better for both of them to be on the same page. They’re both kinda lost without the other.

Me: Right on. So, the I love you was real?

K: Later, mom.

So, there ya have it. Two perspectives from non-fandom people. I love Sherlollians, even the ones who don’t know they’re one. : )

Spring Anime 2017 Part 1: woke up late

This time I prepared so I could get to the procrastinating right with the first post! Yay! Let’s get this show on the road.

Alice to Zouroku

So get this, a pretty girl with psychic superweapon powers escapes from a lab she’s been in her whole life and now has to adapt to the real world with the help of a guy she stumbles upon, all while being chased by her superweapon former friends. But in a shocking twist, this is actually better than Elfen Lied! Not being written by someone as brutally incompetent as Lynn Okamoto is a start, but the real change here is that our heroine is less murder machine and more genuinely cute, and more importantly the guy she ends up with is not a harem ringleader dorklord, but a grumpy elderly florist. Yeah, we’re skipping the recent trend of dadfeel anime and diving headfirst into granddad feels (I don’t know if aging otaku are quite old enough to fully self-insert yet, but the same principle applies). It’s a low hanging fruit, but that’s what makes it work; a deliberate, contemplative pace and delightfully whimsical music by TO-MAS also help. So far, so good, were it not for the fact that this is only one aspect of the show. Of course a show like this would have an action half as well, and that one’s pretty garbage. Not only is it directed with zero impact or excitement, it also relies on horrible CG a lot - I really don’t want to be reminded of Hand Shakers this quickly again, thank you very much. Plus, it runs with a Alice in Wonderland metaphor, which is baby’s first literary reference and doesn’t bode well about the intellectual ambitions of the project. So we have one half that’s admittedly effective, but also very predictable and which desperately needs to go somewhere to pay off. The other half just plain sucks and has little chance to improve. I think I’ll give this one a few more chances to sort out its priorities, but it’s definitely not a sure thing.

Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism

A cocky guy walks into a school full of pretty girls with weapons who have managed to sissify all the dudes by forcing them to crossdress. He then proceeds to troll them with his rugged charm. You know, it’s really not that easy to offend me but damn this show is trying. Apart from bottom-tier harem crap setup, this show also looks like ass and is tremendously boring; a few well done action cuts do not in fact excuse “fights” that mostly consist of exposition about special attacks, or terminally uninspired direction. Macchiavellism is the worst of shounen fightmens crossed with the worst of harem LNs, plus some of the worst jokes bad anime comedy can come up with. It’s not even audacious enough in its badness to boggle the mind; I could watch this if I was interested in adding another 1/10 to my MAL, but that’s about all I can appreciate about it.

Frame Arms Girl

Speaking of unholy combinations, here’s Gundam Build Fighters x Rozen Maiden x Strike Witches: A girl stumbles into a sentient mecha musume model kit that spends its time explaining the technical details of model building to her and attracts other model kits that want to fight. It’s an ad for model kits, what do you expect. There’s no characters, the plot is utterly uninteresting, the action’s bad, it looks subpar to bad, and the only high point is how brazenly it reads to you from the manual.

Gin no Guardian

Here’s your latest Chinese webcomic adaptation from your friends at Haoliners Animation League (Shanghai) Inc., whose output has been asymptotically approaching the quality level of a bad Japanese cartoon for years now: Closer than ever, but still not quite there. Maybe they should stop picking bad webcomics with incomprehensible nonsense plots as source material, just sayin’. So this is about a dude who beats up CG zombies in the spirit world but the actual story is how he got there? Or something? It manages to look barely alright and even has some visually striking design work, but its half-length run time prevents it from forming any semblance of coherence and I’m not about to ask for further clarification.

Oushitsu Kyoushi Haine

In a vaguely 18th century Germanic kingdom, a grown ass man with the body of a ten year old and a snarky disposition is hired to become the tutor of an instaharem of fabulous princes. I really don’t get who this is for; obviously the harem is straight out of a PSP otome dating sim, but it’s lacking the obvious self-insert dimwitted main girl, and no, it isn’t gay romance either. Even though it’s a comedy, that aspect does not seem to be played for outright parody. The source material is running in GFantasy, a shounen title (but not one as specifically elementary schooler-focused as Jump, it also carries fujo favorites such as Black Butler). Dubious provenance aside, Haine is moderately funny if nothing else, mainly due to the deadpan reactions of the main character to these ridiculous dreamboats. It just also drags more than a little, with long conversations that aren’t very entertaining all the time. It’s watchable compared to a lot of the stuff out this season, but I remain unconvinced.

Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records

After Macchiavellism already obliterated the battle harem bingo, here’s our next winner. The setup’s more or less the same and in some respects it’s even more formulaic (the school is actually a magic school for magic people, princesses, duels, &c), but Akashic Record is not quite as odious simply by focusing on being a comedy first and foremost and pulling that off at least on a technical level - it has good visual execution and comedic timing. The question is just how much credit you want to give it for that when the jokes themselves still suck, and that’s of course ignoring the entire setup being Light Novel as all fuck. Kinda seems familiar actually, because this is not entirely unlike to what KonoSuba did to the isekai genre, and people keep trying to tell me that that was totally great. Well, go watch this one then, motherfuckers.

Sagrada Reset

But there’s always the other kind of light novel, the one where high schoolers talk about life, people and the world. Think Bakemonogatari or OreGairu. Sagrada Reset wants a slice of that pie and starts by stealing the magical realism conceit from classic™ visual novel Wind ~A Breath of Heart~: There’s a remote town in Japan where everyone has superpowers, but if they leave the town they instantly forget about it. Oops, i guess I just spoiled Wind’s midgame, but I have to since Sagrada Reset puts this stuff right upfront because it has to discuss technicalities (at length) to make its plot work. Yeah, that’s how I like my magical realism, thoroughly explained and conceived by people who should write wikis, not fiction. There’s a girl who can reset time, but only once per arbitrary period of time and also including herself, which means she only finds out she already did it once it doesn’t work again. So that’s pretty useless, except there’s a guy whose superpower is having his memory unaffected by this. They have to work together to solve… some problems, I suppose. This whole idea seems to have potential in a JoJo subplot sort of way, but it’s completely sunk by the way the thing is written, since apparently the writer has never met a human being in his life. It’s entirely made of these pseudo-deep highschool stoner philosophy conversations presented in a lifeless inflection by people who stand around like robots on battery saver mode. This seems to be intentional (at least the term “robot” is thrown around a couple of times, which is certainly ominous), but it also makes for an excruciating and interminable watching experience.

Sakura Quest

Since Sakura Quest was announced, I have been gleefully throwing water on the hype of people who expected this to be the next Shirobako. After all, how likely is it for lightning to strike twice, especially considering Mizushima is not in the director’s seat? Surely it was all just wishful thinking, I want a S2 of Shirobako as much as everyone but I just don’t trust anime. Well consider me fucking told, since apparently among the parties wishing for more Shirobako is P.A. Works, and unlike the anitwitterati they can make it happen. The actual brand name seems to be reserved for a Mizushima project, but I would have no trouble believing that Sakura Quest is a spinoff about Aoi’s sister in the boonies; Shirobako Sunshine, if you will. The initial setup is mirrored here; Yoshino is not a young professional starting her dream job, but a young professional unable to score a dream job (or any job) so she settles for a random one she’s very skeptical of, but will undoubtedly learn to love. Apart from that, well, it’s Shirobako: The positive tone, the large cast of likeable oddballs, the relatable writing about post-highschool problems, and it even looks completely identical. I’ll still be realistic about it: Shirobako isn’t great for what its ideas were, but for how thoroughly it delivered in the long run, and this is by no means guaranteed to also happen with Sakura Reset Quest. For an episode 1 though, it’s like a dream come true, and P.A. are setting themselves up for seasonal double domination with this and Uchouten Kazoku S2.

Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni

Enough gushing, here’s 5 minutes of porn. Okay, it’s josei porn so there may still be gushing involved if you know what I mean, nyuk nyuk. Er, sorry about that. Sooooo there’s a sexually frustrated woman who meets her school crush who’s now a priest, and then they fuck. With a staff made up mostly of (non-josei, but hey) hentai OVA veterans, there is really only one way this could go. I appreciate the brazenness as usual, but I really don’t know how much steamy harlequin romance tailored to TV broadcast standards I want to watch.

Tsugumomo

I’ve seen some warnings about Tsugumomo based on its source material which is a manga with 1. a very high level of art quality and 2. content that has been described as “makes To-Love Ru Darkness look family friendly”. This may explain why it has not been licensed. It doesn’t explain why this first episode is fairly tame though; sure, it’s very much an ecchi comedy, but you get those from time to time and Tsugumomo is not any more raunchy than what I’m used to seeing (and it accomplishes this even without obvious BD-advert censoring). That incidentally also removes any reason to watch it: The plot is as basic “guy gets magical girlfriend for purposes of fights and/or walking in on her naked in the bath” from 15 years ago as they come, and it’s suspiciously well animated, but not well enough for that to be a selling point. Maybe it will get real skeevy eventually, I won’t be around to find out.

Warau Salesman NEW

Warau Salesman starts strong with ultra cool, Saul Bass-inspired opening credits, but that’s about all it has to offer. It’s based on a “black comedy” manga from the 60s by one of the Doraemon authors, and oh boy can you tell. Not only are the character designs 60s-tastic (so at least the Osomatsu-san fujos can schlick to something while they wait for the S2 of that), but so are the sensibilities: The titular salesman goes around tempting frustrated office workers with doing something moderately irresponsible, such as drinking in your lunch break or spending above your means, and then ruins their life when they actually do it. It’s like Twilight Zone written by your HR department. In the 60s. This stuff would have been outdated even in 1989, when it was animated for the first time – hence the “NEW”. I don’t know, it just seems mean-spirited, obvious and pointless, and most importantly I put the “black comedy” in quotes because in addition to not being very black, it’s not funny in any way, and unlike regular anime comedy I can’t even see what’s supposed to be funny.

Weekly Voltron Fic Recs #21

Rules: You can find past rec lists here. This is stuff I like, and I have a huge bias toward Lance, hurt/comfort, and general fluff, in that order. Gen unless otherwise noted. Please comment on the fics if you read and enjoy them!

Days of Gladiator Love by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions)
Words: 3,589
Author’s Summary: Turns out, there was a fair bit of merchandising involved with the Gladiator battles, especially with their more famous fighters.Apparently, this includes romance novels.
My Comments: Warning for an explicit description of…something. This fic is hilarious, and I could see it playing out in my head all too clearly. It could be an episode, except for the aforementioned…something.

Remember Me For Centuries by 0bviousLeigh
Words: 38,045
Author’s Summary: Every legend starts with someone who has no idea what they’re about to get into.
My Comments: This is a Pokemon AU, and it an ABSOLUTE DELIGHT. I was so very, very pleasantly surprised! I barely know Pokemon at all, so I was hesitant at first, but this fic is one hundred percent worth taking a risk on, I guarantee it. Especially if you love Lance. The worldbuilding is so careful and delicately balanced that you really don’t need to know Pokemon much, though I’m sure it helps. I had to keep googling ones I’d never heard of so I could properly imagine the story, haha. But yeah. This fic is incredible. And it just finished. Parts of it made me tear up, I am not kidding. Everyone is absolutely fantastic and SO worth the effort, ahhh, I love this fic.

Let It Haunt You by Emerald_Ashes
Words: 2,785
Author’s Summary: Keith is a little worse for wear upon his return from the Blade of Marmora’s base. Both mentally and physically.
My Comments: Another really lovely missing scene. WHY DIDN’T WE GET SOMETHING LIKE THIS IN CANON WHY. Ah, but all the interpretations from fandom have been lovely, so I really shouldn’t complain. Lance is a good kid in this one, too.

Loyal to the Bone by Shenzuul
Words: 1,392
Author’s Summary: Shiro has been recaptured by the Galra. As he fights off paralyzing terror, Lance’s voice in his ear is a thin lifeline against sinking into despair.
My Comments: Can be read as romantic or platonic. I’m a big fan of these two together, as my own fic testifies, and this is a very sharp and vivid portrayal of them. Love Lance doing everything he can to help Shiro hold on. It’s too short, though.

Tricky Shopping by earthstar
Words: 5,293
Author’s Summary: Ever since Keith was reunited with Shiro, he finds he likes having him around and Keith is determined to prove he can take care of himself.
My Comments: Sequel to an earlier recced fic where Keith is slightly younger, slightly more abandoned, and subsequently slightly more adopted by both the red lion and Shiro. I adore this series so much. I hope there will be much more.

Silver Lining by HeIsSoBlue
Words: 7,664 (WIP 4/?)
Author’s Summary: Being captured by the Galra was probably one of the worst things Lance could imagine. Yet, even the worst situations can come with a silver lining.
My Comments: Another one of those fics where Lance is captured by the Galra, but this one has a twist I don’t want to spoil. It also feels a little more on the realistic side than some others I’ve read. Anyway, I know I have followers who like these fics, so here ya go. Subscribe! Kudos! Comment!

Where The Lions Roam by Mytay
Words: 6,980
Author’s Summary: “ … tell me why Blue is making the moves on Keith.”Pidge stared at him, a touch incredulous. “You really haven’t figured it out?” “Pidge. I am very intelligent, but I am not a genius,” Lance said patiently. “Spell it out for me.” “Well, you just sort of answered your own question,” Pidge said, snorting. “Your Lion is making the moves on Keith — and by ‘moves’ I mean responding to your abject terror whenever Keith is in danger.”
My Comments: Oh, look, it’s the Klance hurt/comfort for this week. This one is super good. Post Season Two and all about that insecurity, yo. The part at the end made me so hurty, and Shiro and the others just going NO made my heart sing.

cough syrup by EmmaLuLuChu
Words: 4,493 (WIP 3/?)
Author’s Summary: Just another morning at the Galaxy Garrison, save for one tiny problem Shiro realizes. *MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2*
My Comments: You know that theory that maybe Shiro got zapped to an alternate universe? WELL PREPARE YOURSELF FOR PAIN. I really want to know what happened here and how things went so wrong for everyone, gah, it’s tearing me up to see them like this. But Shiro is determined to fix it, and, you know. I believe Shiro can save the world.

Varadero Beach is 1976 Years Old by DizzyBunnies
Words: 2,217
Author’s Summary: When invited to a party to celebrate their alliance with the Arusians, the team decide to get a little…intoxicated–well, specifically Hunk and Lance. Or: Hunk and Lance get drunk for the first time together and won’t shut up about random shit.
My Comments: Huuuunnnk. Laaannnccee. Oh, my sweet boys. It’s nice to see them hanging out. This is funny and a little bittersweet, as serves them well.

Flower For Your Thoughts by BrOwNiEfOx
Words: 3,070
Author’s Summary: Soulmate AU: when you get hurt your soulmates blooms flowers. The Paladins are meant to be together and their connection is deeper than just friendship.
My Comments: Short, sweet platonic soulmate AU with just the right amount of pain to make it all come together.

Bad Diagnosis by ElfGrove
Words: 11,483
Author’s Summary: Pidge has been having bad headaches for nearly a week straight, so she decides to see if the infirmary has some sort of Altean Advil. The actual news is not so great.
My Comments: I avoided this fic for awhile, because the tags are scary, but it’s definitely worth it. Everyone tries so hard, and it’s incredibly painful, but also good. Pidge’s family loves her to death.

His Red-Stained Footsteps by CoranCoranTheGorgeousMan
Words: 4,620
Author’s Summary: Standing facing their newly constructed teludav, crucial to their newest, most desperate measure yet, Coran tells her softly, “Your father would be proud of the leader that you’ve become.” She thinks about that, and isn’t sure.
My Comments: Really gorgeous background for Allura and Coran. Painful, but it all came together really well. Feels like canon all the way through.

Momentary Meltdown by Nandireya
Words: 4,384
Author’s Summary: In the wake of Shiro’s disappearance the team have to come to terms with their loss and what it means to their future. One in particular is not handling it well…
My Comments: I really enjoyed this look at Keith and Allura and the way their relationship is having to evolve after the events of Season Two. Keith deserves a meltdown, honestly.

The Arms of Voltron by squireofgeekdom for rimahadley
Words: 2,001
Author’s Summary: The developing friendship of Pidge and Keith over the first and second seasons, and afterward. The arms of Voltron will hold them all together.
My Comments: I love stories about these two developing a friendship. They have so many similarities and so many differences, it’s always fun to watch.

Giggle at a Funeral by BossToaster (ChaoticReactions)
Words: 2,375
Author’s Summary: Stranded and wounded on a planet, Shiro is bleeding out. Luckily, he can still contact his team. Unluckily, he’s well enough to talk at them.
My Comments: Shiro’s sense of humor is the WORST. It’s BossToaster, of course this fic is amazing and you should read it.

Leverage College AU

So I don’t really like high school AU’s that much, and I don’t think a Leverage one would really work. Like at least with these guys, just high school isn’t enough to truly give them a chance to become masters in their fields—they need to mature a bit.

Not to mention high school au vs college au there’d be so many more cons to do. These wouldn’t be children taking on adults, without almost any training or experience. It’d be adults vs adults, albeit adults in training, kinda. Part of the possible corruption in colleges are just how big they are. Sure, you can have a high school with maybe 5,000 students, but that’d be a small-midsized college. There are so many things to go wrong, just in their own college. Administrative issues, club issues (who has more funding, clubs trying to get approved but they keep getting blocked by someone on the administration for a bs reason), tenure—most professors are older white men, how could there not be issues—biased teachers, bribed teachers who give certain student A’s, exclusive clubs, hell cheating, test score fraud (not just SAT’s, there’s the tests you need to take for post-grad education), scholarship competition. Hell, some asshole professors make it so there’s a pre-set number of A’s in the class—do you know the kind of sabotage that could happen?

Hell, we were given an episode about an exclusive fraternity abusing a psych experiment, along with the episode about safety standards and cheerleaders. Shit happens at college.

And if they’re in a city like Philadelphia or New York City, there could be dozens of universities around. There’s not going to be a lack of people needing help.

Parker originally wasn’t supposed to be there, but the track coach once timed her running and well. They promised her lots and lots of chocolate if she actually went to school enough to be on the track team, so she got a scholarship for college. She doesn’t really care that much, but she likes math and the calculations she learns help her plan heists. The amount of times the Physics department professors have had a discussion w Parker about ‘theoretical’ issues that she brings up and. Well. It’s Parker. She also has a minor in Political Science bc she thinks it’s interesting (Listen. Remember how in the Hockey episode she knew about Schilling’s Theory of Rational Deterrence during the Cold War. I don’t make the rules Parker does.)

Also, by being on the track team she gets to travel around a lot, and it’s a readymade alibi as for why she’s in that area. She doesn’t always plan heists around the places she visits, and she goes plenty of times by herself, but it’s pretty good cover.

Since she has a scholarship, they pay for her meal plan and her housing, along w books. No, she never actually uses that room bc hello, waaaaaaaay too obvious, but that’s the point. If everyone expects her to be one place, that would be the first place they’d look for her, give her some time to get away—classic misdirection.

She has like 3 other apartments and like 4 warehouses that no one knows about that she rotates through, both sleeping AND keeping loot. But she takes the free meal plan, she doesn’t have to actually pay for them so more money for her. Not to mention some of the books have good ideas. I’m not saying she gets all A’s in her classes, but she passes.

And really, who’d think a college student is a world-renowned thief? ‘Academic’ is not exactly synonymous with that kind of crime, especially a pretty, 21 year old blonde Physics major.

She’s also a (sporadic) part of the outdoors club. What can she say—they have some pretty good climbing gear, and sometimes it can be hard to constantly get rid of gear. Just a few things—the high tech stuff she gets herself, but the basic things that aren’t easily traced to her? Yeah, it’s convenient. Plus if she’s ever caught, asking why do you have climbing gear becomes a whole lot easier to answer. Also good practice.

Nate is an Art History undergrad, Philosophy grad student who’s the team’s TA. He and Maggie were high school sweethearts, got married their junior year, Maggie had their son a few months after graduation. Nate’s now a grad student. He worked for IYS two years after graduation, interned for them every year during summers in between school and was well on his way to being their star investigator when his 3 year old son died, and they wouldn’t pay for his treatment.

He and Maggie later got divorced, and he’s back at school. They give him a stipend for school, and he doesn’t have to pay for tuition. And well. A constantly drunk Philosophy student is almost expected—he doesn’t really get in trouble with his job.

Aaaaand Hardison. Now, Hardison’s a bit more unexpected. You’d think he’d be Computer Science, but Hardison would run rings around any comp sci professor he’d have—he was only 21, tops, when the series started. Like there is not really that much of a difference between Hardison in the first season and this one in regards to computer ability. He’s a sophomore, and about 19-20.

But this is Hardison. Hardison, who isn’t just a wiz with computers—anything he touches, he can do. “I’ve hacked history” he (correctly) proclaims after figuring out a way to duplicate a 17th century journal in just 24 hours. And then there’s the time Sophie was explaining the history of a piece of art when Nate interjects, saying they already knew all of that, when Hardison interrupts, saying he doesn’t know that much before the 1980’s. Hardison’s a damn sponge when it comes to learning. The dude literally became a lawyer in one day.

So, he’s not going to be a computer science major. He wouldn’t actually learn anything from that, there’s literally 0 point. He has so many minors–an art and design minor, a music minor, and a chem minor. He’s also part of band (hello, Hardison the violin prodigy). So, he’s a mechanical engineering major—a computer, he can buy himself, but a bunch of the gadgets and gizmos he can’t get himself—or at least not easily—he can get for free at the university. Not to mention access to state of the art labs.

He mostly does it at first for his Nana, and then he finds out he genuinely loves learning. And he has a scholarship, and the cafeteria has orange soda, so everything’s all good.

And remember how excited Hardison got in the cooking episode, when he got to fire a laser? Yeah, he gets excited for all the gadgets he has access to.

But he still isn’t on the straight and narrow at all. He’s a hacker, first and foremost.

And Eliot. Oh Eliot. He’s a bit older, maybe enlisted at 17 (he kinda sorta lied), and now 22 and going to college on the GI Bill (I think that’s right). Eliot is almost more of a Jack-of-all-trades than Hardison, and it’s much more unexpected. Like in the episode they made a guy think aliens are real, he had a discussion with Hardison up Fermi’s paradox in regards to other life forms, and Eliot brings up Drake’s equation saying that with a hundred billion stars in our galaxy there’s up to 10,000 technological civilizations “you never know when you have to fight an alien.” Eliot is smart, both street smarts AND book smart and just knows a bunch about every topic. So, he double majors in Liberal Arts and minors in kinesthesiology. After going through his first semester and joining the cooking club, he also adds Culinary Science to his major.

Eliot isn’t a D1 or D3 athlete, but he does a lot of intramural and club sports. From judo to archery to badminton to table tennis, he does it all.

As for Sophie, she’s a Psych grad student, Art History/Linguistics undergrad. Yes, you’d think she’d be a Theater major, but that’s way too obvious. A grifter, who’s a Drama major? Too obvious. Yeah, the reason why Sophie never gets caught is because she never gets audition—she’s a horrible actress when people are looking. You don’t really think “great liar.” I do think she genuinely tries, but it’s also another misdirection.

So much of what Sophie does is an understanding of people, how they tick, their behavior, why they do what they do. She went to a different university for undergrad, and she’s mid 20’s—and ofc, both undergrad and grad school are using an alias. But what Sophie does is mostly enacting her interpretation of human nature. God, Sophie could come up with another approach to psychology with how much she knows, could go down in the textbooks if she wanted.

As for what she’s been doing in between, well, she has a very good cover story for that. But she needs to lie low for a little bit, and fleshing out more of an alias can always help. She developed that Charlotte Prentice alias for 7 years, it’s not out of the realm of possibility she’d do this, especially if she needs to lay low. It’s her first year at this school, and she’s not really that invested but like Parker, it can be a good cover.

She’s met Nate before, same as in the series—he’s chased after her. Although, now that he’s not working at IYS, he doesn’t really care—it’s a big school, they don’t really interact.

And just because they’re now at a university doesn’t mean the first episode would go any differently, at least at first. Or, maybe there’s a faraway professor, named Victor Dubenich, who yes, assembles the team, but doesn’t actually realize Hardison, Eliot, and Parker go to the same university as Nate—he’s much more public than the others. And maybe they don’t realize they all go to the same college, at first. Like they realize that they all live near each other, but the same college?

Because one of the advantages to being that young is that sure, you have fewer contacts and fewer scores and assets but you also have less of a record, less of a trail, fewer chances for people to find out the details of who you are.

But yes, things can get competitive in academia, especially when those plans could be sold for millions of dollars. Except, it turns out it wasn’t even from another professor. It was from a (sleep deprived) grad student.

They still take him down, and makes a seriously ridiculous amount of money. And they all enjoy it more than they thought, like what they’re doing. They start to go their own ways—except not really.

And then they walk into their Intro to Philosophy class, the one that the school requires every major to take, even Sophie, and guess who’s the TA but Nate Ford?

Knowing that Kaitlin isn’t going to get any industry recognition for Dee this season is making me kind of angry. She’s always fantastic, but there’s something about these last few episodes that have been especially wonderful.

1-Look at Hero or Hate Crime, when Charlie confesses that they’ve been smoking together:

In a matter of seconds, she goes through several emotions-

  1. slight confusion from Charlie’s plan to cover smells
  2. surprise that he told them about the smoking thing
  3. betrayal/ ‘what are you doing?!’

Notice how she freezes, leans just slightly forward, then farther back

2- In The Gang Tends Bar-

She makes three facial expressions that, in progression, show her feelings

  1. At the beginning, “aw that’s really sweet, I love him”
  2. Middle, she snaps out of it and looks at the other guys
  3. Lastly, she has a regretted look on her face because she knows she has to rip Charlie up… but remember in The Gang Misses the Boat when Charlie and Dee have a conversation and Charlie says the guys make him do stuff he doesn’t want to do and Dee says it’s peer pressure? I think she ripped Charlie up because a) she’s afraid of her own feelings, and b) she feels peer pressured into doing it

3-Then later in The Gang Tends Bar-

I originally meant it to be funny, but it’s still important.

When Mac gives Dennis the rocket launcher

  1. She looks kind of happy for Dennis. Her brother is making some progress and actually has feelings and cares about things, and got a gift that he loved, which probably means more after his confession that he’s hurt that they never get him anything for valentines.
  2. Maybe even glad that Dennis has Mac, and that being an “old married couple” and the “codependency” she accused them of is actually good.
  3. That if Dennis can show such raw feelings in front of everyone, and he and Mac can have their thing, then maybe it’s okay to accept that she does feel lonely, and there may actually be some kind of connection with/ feelings for Charlie.
  4. Mac and Dennis really have strong feelings for each other, and she’s gonna have to continue sharing a bed with two people who are in love with each other.

PRODUCE101 FINAL – Thoughts and Overwhelming Emotions

It took me literally two whole days to force myself to sit down and start writing about Produce 101′s last and final episode. If you’ve read my previous blog posts about Produce 101, you might know who my biases were. And even though I knew that not all of my favorites will make it into the final boy group, I was still pretty shocked about last Friday’s results. I can’t believe I’m in such pain – just because of a stupid survival program. Well, yes, I am – and that’s why I was not able to share anything about my personal feelings yet. Anyway, here’s what my happy but also broken self thinks about this so-called mess.

This is what WANNA ONE should have looked like – in my opinion.

I’ve mentioned in my previous article that I do not believe that everyone I want to will make it into the group. Let’s try to be realistic: All those countless fans of the show have different opinions. Some hate trainees who are loved by others (and vice versa).

The one I loved probably the most was Kang Daniel. Please, I even wrote a whole post just about his limitless sexiness.  Of course it was him I want to see a center of WANNA ONE.

But when BoA announced his first place, I couldn’t really focus. I was so bothered about the fact that so many other names weren’t mentioned yet – and there was just only one single member-slot, and one of my biases left.

Three trainees of Produce 101 had my die-hard support – and there was only one of them I was really really worried about – and that was Yoon Jisung. When BoA finally made clear that Jisung was part of the group, I started screaming like crazy. My baby did it! And all worries went away in an instant.

Although I’ve wanted every single one of the PLEDIS’ trainees to join WANNA ONE, I was completely aware of the fact that neither Dongho nor Minki wouldn’t make it. I also believed – despite his incredible skills – that Samuel wouldn’t be able to be a member the final group.

Samuel should have been part of WANNA ONE – definitely. But his decreasing popularity left enough doubt in my mind… and my unsettling feeling about this trainee was right.

My guts were also right about Dongho and Minki – but what the hell… Jonghyun!? NO FUCKING WAY! When BoA revealed his 14th rank, I started to cry like the worst piece of fan girl shit.

Is this a joke? How can someone who was number one recently drop to rank 14? I never – NEVER – thought that Jonghyun wouldn’t be part of Produce 101′s boy group. I was quite sure about Dongho and Minki’s failure, and I felt slightly uneasy about Minhyun – but NEVER about Jonghyun.

I felt so numb after realizing that Minhyun was the only member of NU’EST who made it into WANNA ONE – even though my ultimate bias turned out to be center – I wasn’t happy at all. I should have been happy, right? Daniel got the position I’ve wanted for him – but I couldn’t celebrate.

Now there are three other things that worry me AFTER Produce 101′s final.

The last and final member who joined WANNA ONE was Han Sungwoon. I am a fan – of course I’m a fan! I freaking love HOTSHOT! Everyone should love HOTSHOT! And that’s why I didn’t want him to be part of this new group. Don’t get me wrong! I was so happy for him because he is without any doubt one of those guys who deserved it the most – thanks to his ambition, insane skills and hard work.

But since his HOTSHOT buddy Noh Taehyun had to leave the show, I thought it would be better if also Sungwoon would just drop out as well, and go back to supporting his original group. Through Produce 101 both trainees received a lot of attention – which was good publicity for their company and boy group.

Now Sungwoon won’t be able to be part of HOTSHOT for over one and a half years. Does this mean they will start to promote without him? Or do they have to wait for Sungwoon to return? Maybe they’ll disband anyway. Who knows…

Just worse seems to be this current NU’EST situation. Only Minhyun turned out to be part of WANNA ONE. What does this mean? I thought that at least Jonghyun would be able to join him. And that meant that three members of NU’EST were left: Aron (if you don’t know him, please check him out – he’s hot as fuck), Baekho aka Dongho and Ren aka Minki. Sounds like a pretty cool sub-unit, right?

We have the oldest member and rapper, the main vocalist, and the maknae. I would have been able to live with that. But with only Minhyun in WANNA ONE – who won’t be able to do any kind of promotion with NU’EST until the end of 2018 – there’s not really a chance for NU’EST to form a proper sub-unit or to promote without leaving a member out, right?

I still can’t get over the fact that Jonghyun is not the leader of this new group. It literally breaks my heart – and this was also the reason why I wasn’t able to write anything about this topic until now. My heart and soul needed time to realize what’s going on.

Every time I’ve opened Tumblr, I started to cry because way too many of you shared passionate posts about Jonghyun and the disappointment of the loss of his leader position of WANNA ONE. I can’t believe that this affects me so much – but yes, it does!

Poor Jonghyun, of course. But what about Minhyun

I try to be as honest as possible – and please, don’t get me wrong. I am happy that Minhyun received so much love from national producers. But I think it would have been better if he didn’t join WANNA ONE. Things would be much easier that way.

The third and last fact that worries me the most is the current member line up of WANNA ONE.

I like every single one of them. However, the age gaps between all those trainees and future idols aren’t exactly small. Come on! Look at Jisung who is already 26.

But it’s not only a variety of ages that bothers me – it’s more their different images.

While Guanlin is with his 15 years the maknae of WANNA ONE, he still looks pretty mature and would fit a masculine concept very well. The same goes for Woojin, who is only 17.

However, I am not sure what to do with Jihoon, Jinyoung and Daehwi. Well, I know that it was extremely obvious that Jihoon is going to join the final group. But I still can get rid of this “unfitting” feeling.

With Daniel as center I think that WANNA ONE will have a more sexy and mature concept instead of a boyish and cute one.

Okay, okay… Daehwi can still spread a certain mature and elegant vibe which he proved during Never. Even Jinyoung showed in the final episode as center of Hands On Me that he is able to slightly pull off the sexy side of himself. But what about Jihoon?

This is only my personal opinion. If you see things differently, I totally respect that. I’m just some old bitch who experienced various boy and girl group debuts over a decade of being into K-Pop.

But Jihoon didn’t suit the Boy in Luv concept, and he didn’t fit into the Get Ugly group. As beautiful and good looking and of course talented he might be, he still looks like a grade schooler – even though he is older than Daehwi, Guanlin, Woojin and Jinyoung

This is not his fault of course. No one can blame him for his innocent appearance. Girls even love it, and that’s why he placed second! But next to all the other members of WANNA ONE… I’m not sure how the final concept of this group will look like.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he is able to pull off a mature image – which I would love to see. Daehwi is almost able to do it while Jinyoung is not so bad at acting all sexy, elegant and stuff. I am only really worried about Jihoon. I just want to say: Come on, boy… prove this ahjumma wrong!

Yesterday, Brave Entertainment announced that Kim Samuel will debut solo soon (I thought he already did, but okay…) which is in my opinion a really bad idea. Brave – with its usual badass and mature concepts – would be easily able to form a fantastic boy group.

For example BIGSTAR are freaking dope – btw good job for putting them on ice, Brave Brothers. As main dancer of a boy group, Samuel would easily stand out. A solo career seems a little bit too risky if you ask me.

Final words… I am happy for every single one who got into WANNA ONE. Not all of my biases made it – and that’s okay. I think it’s rather ridiculous to bash Mnet or Koreans for this final member line up. Think about it… is it really Mnet’s fault? Is it really the voters’ fault?

Fact is – being sad, disappointed or angry doesn’t help. The pain of seeing your favorite trainee lose will go away soon. And that’s why I finally kicked my own ass to write this down – to end this topic. Produce 101 Season 2 is over! Deal with it! It won’t come back! The 11 trainees who will debut are fixed. All we can do is support WANNA ONE – with or without your bias.

if you dont mind me being nosy what did happen between Joseph Mallozzi and joe flanigan?

Don’t worry, you’re not being nosy.  It happened so long ago now, it’s basically moved into ancient fandom history and I’m not sure how you’d even look it up on your own.  I tried to find some links to add here to make this more factual but not a lot is out there anymore.  You could always check old posts on Mallozzi’s Wordpress (but honestly, I wouldn’t bother).

Basically, if I remember correctly, JF had A LOT of concerns about the show (i.e. : killing off Carson and Elizabeth, Teyla only being billed as “Sheppard’s love interest”, Sheppard being too ignorant about things like not knowing who was under his command [a la Whispers]) and he brought all of these up to Mallozzi and the gang.  His intention wasn’t to complain that it was a bad show but to try and make it alot better, but he got completely ignored, even to the point that Mallozzi was cutting him out of all knowledge of future episodes/story-arcs for his character.  That alone would have pissed me off a ton but then the whole “we don’t care about SGA anymore, we want to do SGU” thing happened, which pretty much pushed it all over the edge.  As an example of how passionate JF was about SGA, he tried desperately to get it to have a Season 6, even getting financial backers and attempting to secure all of the rights from MGM so they could producer it independently (he never did get the rights, very sadly).  I can only imagine how it felt to hear Mallozzi was just pushing it aside for something completely untested (and somethingthat ultimately failed).

As some behind-the-scenes TV insight:  I worked for a prominent TV Network here in the US for 8 years and let me tell you, writers and producers and programming directors do this stupid shit ALL the time.  They think, “omg, we want to make ‘Show B’ so badly!  We don’t care how well ‘Show A’ is preforming - it’s not what we want!  I’m sure our audience will LOVE ‘Show B’ because WE LOVE ‘Show B’ !”  So they get ‘Show A’ cancelled and then ‘Show B’ falls flat and they gain literally nothing from it.  Not to mention that it’s almost always for the same “we don’t want this first demographic anymore, we want this second one.”  I worked on a show for a full year that was supposed to be the shining beacon of the network I worked for and almost everyone internally kept saying, “this is way too high-brow for our network.  We aren’t in this demographic.  It’s going to fall REALLY flat.”  Despite that, the producers and executives put hundreds of thousands into the show and then guess what?  It completely bombed.  TV producer Boyz Clubz can do horrible stuff to shows.

But I’m getting off track.

TL;DR - Mallozzi is basically a big dick (he did this shit with SG1, too).  Joe really wanted to make SGA a lot better (as did a lot of the other actors) but Mallozzi & Co cut him out of any creative control over his character, ignored his concerns, and then killed the show.  I’d honestly be pretty pissed still about all of this, too.

(Also, for any other long-time fans, please add or correct me if I’ve gotten anything wrong!  I am developing an old-lady-fandom brain with all of this).

cardinaleyes(.)tumblr(.)com/post/159285484974/cardinaleyes-cardinaleyes-cardinaleyes ----Have you seen this what do you think meta amazing person?

Ha! Um… I’ve been saying for weeks that Mick’s similarities to Cas are surface level. But from the very moment we first meet him, he’s even visually opposite to Cas:

He changes his coat to match Castiel’s, but that was all surface level stuff… until he had his moment of doubt in 12.16, I wasn’t sure if he was even going to earn ANY sort of redemption. And the fact he kept the truth about Magda to himself, and didn’t even TRY to come clean about that with Dean because of his precious “Code” I knew any redemption he earned was going to be via death.

He sealed his own fate, you know?

Cas, all along even throughout s4, HAD DOUBTS. He knew he had his orders, but he struggled with them, and that struggle only got harder for him. In 4.20, when he’d found out the truth about what his superiors plans were for the apocalypse and releasing Lucifer, he’d tried to tell Dean but got dragged back to heaven for reprogramming before he could. Then it took him less than TWO EPISODES to break through that fresh programming and rebel completely.

I mean, MICK NEVER STRUGGLED WITH ANY OF THIS.

He’d been “programmed” by the MoL since he was a KID. When he was locked in a room with his best friend and told only one of them was leaving that room. The other boy tried to reason with him, that they should run away, but he didn’t want to go back to his old life… and he killed his friend. I mean, this is the mindset he’s lived with most of his life. Obedience to the Code.

We have to assume the rest of the MoL have a similar background.

So I agree with Dean’s reaction face to the thought of going to these people’s version of Hogwarts. It’s like Hogwarts under the rule of the Death Eaters, ffs.

(The wishes turn bad, Sam. The wishes turn very bad.)

Sure, at the last minute he couldn’t do it, or knew if he DID try to kill Eileen he’d be dead too before she hit the ground. Like Sam and Dean would just stand there and let him kill her… But he did try to defend Sam and Dean, and did begin to see there were great gaping holes in Toni Bevell’s reports on them.

He was SHOCKED that they knew about the nephilim. He showed up at the bunker thinking he was about to drop some A+ top secret intel on them… and they were like, “Yeah, so? We’ve been working on that problem for months while you guys were trying to figure out what was even going on.” He knows they have resources the MoL can only dream of, not because of their network or their tech or their Code, but because of who they are.

He sees they’re not useless, at least, and tries to defend them, and of course he has to die for it. For simple disobedience.

This notion that I’ve seen floating around that Ketch is now in line for “redemption” is equally baffling. HE IS A MONSTER. A MONSTROUS MONSTER. He shot someone he’d been at least acquainted with since they were at Kendricks together. I mean we saw what Kendricks social life was like, and Mr. Top Of His Class probably got there by murdering all the other students, but yeesh.

And he didn’t even flinch about it. They just went about their business stacking up all the Winchester files and blithely discussing their impending executions while Mick’s bleeding corpse dangled off the other end of the table… I mean… do these seem the actions of someone with ANYTHING worth redeeming in them?

If anyone working with the BMoL is gonna earn redemption, it’s gonna be Mary. Because right now, she is one of them.

Mick and Mary have both been paralleled to Cas this season, in different ways. And now Mary has been “partnered” with Ketch. Mick even lampshaded their partnership in this episode, telling Sam and Dean not to worry about her because she and Ketch work so well together… I mean…

Mick represented FAILURE #1.

I think Ketch’s true nature is going to be revealed and he’s going to represent FAILURE #2.

Which leaves it up to Mary to be the SUCCESS. And it’s gonna hurt like heckeroo, because you are watching Supernatural.

Because that’s the rule of threes.

These aren’t parallels to Cas in the “what happens to one is foreshadowing what will happen to the other.” They are using pieces of Castiel’s history to give us insight into these characters. And most of what we’re seeing is that they in no way actually live up to Cas.

If they did, Mick would’ve lived.

As to Ms. Hess being a Naomi parallel, again super dark mirror. Even Naomi repented in the end and acknowledged she was wrong. I don’t think the Dolores Umbridge of Kendricks is gonna repent.
