Getting a job in Software Development

I graduated from uni in October and tomorrow (February) I start my first real job. ‘Wow, that’s a big gap!’ you might think, and, well, it kind of is but - I wasn’t searching for a job the whole time. In fact, the actual job searching (from sending out the first application to accepting an offer) took only 2 weeks. But let’s start with some basics:

(Please note: What I’m describing is true for Germany, where I live and did the whole application process. It might well be different in your country, although I’m pretty sure it applies to more countries than only Germany.)

ran-98  asked:

What's the difference between programming, coding and developing, please? 🤔

From a purely definition standpoint, they do all seem to mean the same thing and many people will use them interchangeably. But when it comes to connotations and usage, people still debate over which term is “correct” and in which context.

Based on my personal experience, this is how I generally use the terms:

Programming: I personally (and I think a lot of other people do as well) tend to associate this with an OS or software-level program – where you create software, or application that’s created in a language that’s compiled for the OS to read. This would be a language like C++, and is typically released one-time with updates released as downloaded patches or bought new releases.

However, from a technical standpoint, it simply means creating code that are instructions to be compiled to what you want to do. With that definition, “web programming” would also still be valid and correct as programming since languages like PHP and JavaScript meet that definition. But HTML and CSS – which are defined more as “markup” – would not. This is because HTML/CSS is more of a “If this, display/replace this” VS “grab/update/display this data and if this, then that” type of work. While both are translated into something else, only one is actually actionable instructions to be performed.

Coding: Some people hate this term. Some love it. Personally, I don’t give AF, but I do agree with people that it sounds “less intimidating” than “programming”. But that might also be why some people see it as “lower level” or “beginner” programming – but that’s kind of silly. It’s all code, and if you’re writing code, you are coding. Simple as that.

To go back to HTML/CSS vs PHP and JS I mentioned earlier, markup would still be code. So even if you are doing front-end work (only HTML/CSS), you still code. Writing markup is still coding. It just might not necessarily be programming. :)

Developing: Using “developer” is the term I prefer for myself. Developing is a subset of programming. While a software might be in development before it is released, something like a website is being constantly developed. Web languages change and update very frequently, which is why websites are constantly “in development” and updated behind the scenes. Where as a programmer can learn C++ and pretty much know it, a developer has to be constantly learning, growing, and staying up-to-date with as the language changes. This is why they say they’re a “web developer” instead of a “web programmer”.

TLDR; Here’s a short-hand vers:

  • CODE is anything the computer/browser/whatevz translates into something else.

  • PROGRAMMING is when the CODE instructs the computer/browser/whatevz to perform certain tasks.

  • DEVELOPING means the CODE is “in-progress”, and a DEVELOPER is someone who CODES OR PROGRAMS with LANGUAGES that are essentially “in-progress”, growing, and frequently updating.

Hope that helps!

I’ve been doing a lot of writing (grant applications) and software learning (Flash, currently), and I was getting burnt out, so I spent time animating a few rough shots to clear my head.  I’m not sold on anything in these shots, so they may change considerably, but it sure was nice to animate something again!

Being: My day job is implementing/supporting a telecommunication software application. I avoid project management at work like the plague because it requires detailed notes, project plans, organization, conference calls, and lots of follow up. All methodical things that usually have to be done in a specific order. I am not good at these things and hate methodically doing anything in a specific order. But I am very good at logically troubleshooting problems, at asking the right questions to get to a customer’s true needs and/or problems, and at resolving issues faster than most of my co-workers. Give me a problem at work, leave me alone, and I’ll resolve it or escalate it to the engineers. I know pretty much right away when it’s an issue I can figure out and fix myself versus something I would be wasting my time on it needs to be escalated to engineering.

I have no patience with slowness and having my time wasted. At all. My co-workers will usually give control of a computer over to me if I’m helping them solve a problem because they know they’re not going fast enough for me. I even avoid going to the grocery store with certain family members because they take too long randomly browsing aisles. I can do it twice as fast alone, get out of my way! I have a sign that says “The only thing worse than seeing something done wrong is seeing something done slowly.” This is so true. I’m value independence and need the freedom to do what I want when I want. I have no problems traveling alone, going to movies alone, going to dinner alone. I’m not so good with romantic relationships, but I like to think this is only because I haven’t met someone willing and unthreatened by the sheer amount of space and alone time I need. Even spending time with my family requires me to retreat to privacy to recover after just a couple hours of being with them. On the other hand, large crowds don’t faze me because they don’t engage me or affect me personally. They’re merely obstacles to be navigated around. What exhausts me at a place like Disneyland is never the crowds, but the family or friends I have to spend the day with. It’s almost guaranteed I’ll take off by myself at some point during a visit to Disneyland to regroup. Also the time-wasting thing comes into play again… I’m not going to sit around while they move too slowly for me or do something I don’t like. I’m going to go do my own thing and meet back up later.

I’m calm and quick-acting under duress and emergency situations. I also crave adventure constantly. If I’m driving, I’m always eyeing any open country I see and wanting to be out in it hiking or just wanting to see what’s over the top of a rise or around a bend. I passionately love the outdoors. But my need for adventure is also satisfied by a good action movie or book or television show. I don’t have to physically be out doing things. Thinking about them will do the trick. This is a big reason why I became a writer, so that when I wanted adventure, I could just write an adventurous story.

I only drive manual transmission cars because then I’m in control and I can shift gears when I want, not when the car wants. I love driving and I love a car that handles and moves out like a sports car, but pragmatism also make me choose low maintenance vehicles that also get good gas mileage and have good visibility out all the windows. Almost everything I do is a balance between satisfying those physical cravings and logical efficient practicalities.I am a sucker for shiny things, like a watch with all the gadgets, and high-end audio/video equipment. I am drawn to the best of things and will admit I look down my nose at cheap things. I also like instant gratification and will often buy in haste, though I usually do at least some online research about any large purchases.

I have very strong opinions on a lot of things, but I basically never share my opinions on controversial topics (such as politics) because I’ve found no good comes from it. I may completely disagree with what someone says to me, but I will merely nod or make a non-committal noise and move on, and they usually never know how opposite my own view actually may be. I’m value honesty, so saying nothing is usually the best policy. Most people, I’ve found, don’t actually want to hear what someone else thinks, anyway, they just wanted to air their own views. I’m very emotional over some things, but not over other things that perhaps I should be. Movies, music, books, beauty, animals – these things make me cry pretty freely. Actual people-things I probably should react to usually don’t elicit a feeling. I have cried at funerals of extended family members because everyone else is crying, but inside, I would have to admit I do not feel sad. The opposite is true as well. I can beam and tell someone how happy I am for them and not feel the least bit happy inside. I am very good at putting on the appropriate face for others while keeping my inner feelings private. I will often say generic things that I don’t feel or mean in small talk with people simply because I know the person I’m with feels that way, and it keeps things smooth and easy. What I’m really thinking is none of their business.

How others perceive me: People who don’t know me seem to find me intimidating and anti-social, aloof, a bit mysterious, and humorless. I can be very blunt in criticizing, though the older I get the more tact I’ve learned to employ. Part of that is because I handle criticism very well, and I didn’t realize for the longest time that most other people don’t. People seem to get their feelings hurt very easily, which is foreign to me. People who do know me find me loyal and caring and get to see my silly side. Which can be very very silly. I laugh a lot when I’m with people I trust. But it usually takes a long time before I trust people.

The perception of ISTP: mechanic who will take your car apart and put it back together. Hah. No. Not cars. However, I’m very good at figuring out how things work on my own. I built two wooden gates myself just from understanding how a gate has to work. I’ve put in multiple brick patios. I’ve made multiple costumes by hand with no instruction, but because logically a corset can only function if it’s made a certain way, etc.

ISTPs are daredevil adrenaline junkies… no, that’s not me. This kind of stereotype seems to look at Se without considering Ti comes first. My Ti prevents me from doing stupid reckless things that would get me injured or killed, raise my insurance, cost me money I don’t have, etc. I think first, then act. Sure, I enjoy driving fast, but will only do it when I don’t endanger others or myself. I’d love to know what it feels like to parachute out a plane, but I doubt I’d do it because one thing goes wrong and you’re dead.

They’re badasses – Well, I admit, I’ve studied fencing, kickboxing, can use a bullwhip, and am good at archery. I walk/run several miles every day, and I have a great need to be in shape or I’m very unhappy with myself. But I avoid conflict and would try to talk my way out of a bad situation before I tried anything physical.

Learning the concept of making things generic was significant for me. From that point on i always tried to separate my code into something universal and something business-specific. This allows you to build up a lot of reusable tooling and become more productive. Objects on any level of a software application can be designed as generic tools, to be repurposed later. Not only that, it makes your code easier to maintain.

Interview: Darius

Today we’re joined by Darius. Darius is a phenomenal visual artist who specializes in making beautiful digital art. He specializes in photo editing and makes wonderful pieces with inspiring quotes on them. Darius loves creating, as you’ll soon read. My thanks to him for taking the time to participate in this interview.

Please, tell us about your art.

I make art digitally. I would love to make things physically but I’m afraid that I have a low aptitude for that. I like photo editing which is a bit hard to describe because it can be so varying. I think the only necessary component to photo editing is that a photo be incorporated. Typically a subject is masked out and we use various softwares and applications to bend that photo to our will and make it into whatever we imagine it to me. I know that’s not the best explanation but it’s the best that I can offer (sorry), at least for now.

For about a year now I’ve started using shapes to make art. Basically what I do is I take shapes such as a square and triangle or maybe even an inorganic shape and combine them in whatever way I want to make whatever I want. For example, I may put an equilateral triangle on top of a square to make house looking figure from the too. The example is very simplified explanation of my process as for a given piece, I may use 100 different shapes and have a few thousand shapes in all in one photo. I can change the opacity, stroke, shadow, height, width, color of these shapes to give a piece even more depth or uniqueness.

I mainly make relatively simple pieces and put inspirational quotes on them. I’ve always really liked those pictures quotes that we all have seen somewhere on the internet. About 5 years back I thought that they were so great because one could positively touch another with word in an art form. It inspired me to start making digital art.

I’ve put my shape art and quote into one, combining the things I love and sharing them with others in the hopes of inspiring them or touching them in some way and of for my own enjoyment as well.

What inspires you?

I am mostly inspired by plants.

What got you interested in your field?  Have you always wanted to be an artist?

I’m not arting as a career or anything. It’s more of a very time consuming hobby.

Though I have been paid to create local campaign posters and store signs.

Do you have any kind of special or unique signature, symbol, or feature you include in your work that you’d be willing to reveal?

Hmm, no I don’t believe so

What advice would you give young aspiring artists?

I would like to young artist that perhaps aren’t as confident or capable in the art to not give up. I encourage them to try new mediums or to even make up their own.

I encourage them to try different art styles because there are so many and just because one doesn’t work for you doesn’t mean they all won’t. Most of all, have fun and love what you’re doing.

Where on the spectrum do you identify?

I identify as Asexual Aromantic

Have you encountered any kind of ace prejudice or ignorance in your field?  If so, how do you handle it?

I’ve only realized my asexuality for hmm about a month now and I’ve only told two friends who received me positively, so I haven’t had much opportunity for that. Though I’m certain people in my life would tell me that I’m a closeted homosexual or that I’m making it up. Something out there like that. I’ve decided that I won’t really tell people, partly to avoid predicaments like that but also because I feel people aren’t obligated to tell everyone.

What’s the most common misconception about asexuality that you’ve encountered?

I’ve realized that most people don’t even realize that asexuality exists.

They think that it’s something made up and laugh, but not before bringing up asexual reproduction … sigh

I honestly haven’t encountered misconceptions because everyone in my life either doesn’t know what asexuality is or has a great understanding of it.

I’m sure I’ll encounter those with misconceptions in time. I just hope that I’m equipped enough to better educate them

What advice would you give to any asexual individuals out there who might be struggling with their orientation?

Take your time and breathe.

If you’re not sure if you’re ace or not, you’re more than welcome to use it as a title.

If you don’t know where you fall, that’s okay also.

Don’t feel like it’s necessary to give who you are a title or a name. You don’t have to have one.

You don’t have to use the split attraction model if you don’t want to.

You can be ace yet still enjoy sexual interaction with another.

Please understand that the only person who decides if you are ace or not is you, no someone else.

You aren’t broken. You aren’t going to die alone. You’re still capable of love. And you are very much loved by many.

Finally, where can people find out more about your work?

I mostly keep my art to myself and friends but I do post them on my Tumblr if I remember to.

Thank you, Darius, for participating in this interview and this project. It’s very much appreciated.

Landing Page Essentials: Optimize the Thought Process

Too typically internet online marketers as well as internet site proprietors fall right into the trap of optimizing pages. They bother with typefaces, colors, images, placement of text, white room, comparison, “feel” and also myriad various other variables. Believe about exactly how your visitor will certainly watch the internet page.

What are they looking for?

All the flawlessly selected and also placed fonts, colors, images on the planet will not influence whether the web page resolves the reader’s trouble or offers worth. If you’re not addressing these inquiries initially, you’re most likely losing visitors.

So, how can you optimize the thought process?

Let’s look at a couple examples for the search term: “SEO Software”. Exactly what is he or she trying to find? More than likely they recognize the worth of Search Engine Optimization and also are looking for a software program in order to help them with their SEO.

How to Do It Well

The leading result looks appealing. This is a paid search result with well-written ad copy. Allow’s have a look at the landing web page:

External image

Headline - “SEOmoz PRO - SEO as well as Social Software” speaks straight to Inquiry # 1 due to the fact that it validates to the site visitor that Search Engine Optimization software program is being offered

3 bullet points - Swiftly describes just what you get with the software application, thus cementing a response to Inquiry 1.

Free Trial - Not just does this usage the emotional power of “free”, it talks directly to Concern 2. You reach use the complete product complimentary for Thirty Day. That’s fantastic value.

Additional copy - Numerous individuals will act rapidly, enroll in the free test, and after that get additional information once they’re in the software program, however discover just how much added info is given listed below the initial phone call to action (CTA) to respond to Question 3. You have actually got screenshots of the product which aids take the ambiguous term “software” and also make it much more concrete, and a consumer testimonial from Chris Winfield with his real photo. I’ve met him, so I could vouch it’s really him. And also remember, another CTA to get the complimentary trial.

This landing web page from SEOmoz plainly responds to each of our visitor’s 3 major questions. They rapidly aim out they have a Search Engine Optimization software remedy that can help the site visitor, they show their worth with a full Thirty Day test, and they develop their integrity with a testimonial, screenshots and also profession design. Boom!

What Not To Do

Let’s take a look at search engine result # 2 from our search results page above: rio seo. Their advertisement likewise states that they supply Search Engine Optimization software. Allow’s see exactly how their landing web page answers our 3 questions.

External image

Headline - “Rio Search Engine Optimization is ‘The Only Leader’”. Exactly what does that also mean? The only leader of just what? Also the subhead below it does not respond to Inquiry 1 plainly. Do they have SEO software program or not?

Download the Report - Why would certainly a user want to download and install a record? They looked for Search Engine Optimization software application, not a record.

Rotating Content - As you can see in the screenshots below, the page is really a gigantic slider with 2 other messages: “Solutions for SEO Automation” and also “Drive website traffic through Hyperlocal SEO”. I would argue that SEO automation is more detailed to the original search for SEO software program, however when you put it # 2 in the slider, you obviously don’t think it’s the # 1 top priority. I’m not a believer in sliders and this is an additional instance why.

This touchdown page falls short to provide a solution because it does not clearly state how their deal can resolve the fundamental inquiry behind the “Search Engine Optimization software” search question. It cannot supply a valuable advantage due to the fact that it does not articulate the worth of the record it offers. They do deal with the inquiry of integrity better down the web page by revealing logos of Lot of money 500 companies using their software. By not addressing the first 2 problems though, most users will certainly be lengthy gone.

When optimizing your landing web pages you should focus on maximizing the thought procedure of your client. This includes addressing their main questions: do they have an option to my problem, is it beneficial, as well as is it trustworthy. If you address these concerns plainly, in the appropriate order, you’ll get even more site visitors to advance to conversion as well as end up being valued customers.

Importance of Mobile Application Development and Manner Software Continuity

Today piece of virtu users are going up every prime and there is only integral person that is beating these dimeter in the space and that is number of design applications. It is effective to have our original and that’s pretense this domain has been our one of the primary focus area.
Be it Symbian, Blackberry fret brand ever-new Android, iphone, ipad, it can develop perfection applications on practically all platforms.

Significance of Mobile App Development

Application development is the ideational of programs that perform micro-tasks or functions for software and hardware. Programmers and developers write source rubric for any number of actions €" for example, sending an e-mail automatically to a man’s girlfriend on Valentine’s Day. Quantities computing has enabled robust application development to be conducted fellow feeling the online encirclement.

Data-intensive businesses are especially in libido of applications in furtherance of leading their information. Many applications can be run behind-the-scenes; for tracking inventory, maintaining account balances and billing clients automatically.

It is essential that applications incorporate the specific business standards insomuch as data board of regents, within their code design, to ensure proper integration and compatibility.

Initially, applications focused primo on functionality. Nowadays, the most complex applications focus on elements such as knots, compatibility, security, scalability and customer sense impression. The fastest, championship user-friendly applications libido become the plurality popular.

Speed is transformed by using common announcer cryptoanalysis, templates and other component that major in the fugleman standardized specifications.

Security features discharge be better constructed via cloud computing, as programmers make encounter assessments of bugs, viruses and malware hacker threats. Cloud computing INNER MAN professionals can provide advice concerning wetlands conservation athwart the actual hacker attacks €" instant sales staunchness code snippets that can be incorporated into new applications.

Larger application projects make a demand scalability that can countenance in lieu of growth as technology, platforms and businesses transgress. Programmers can compare software and munitions life cycles more easily in keeping with murmuration electronic data processing, allowing them to slog on €in-the-loop€ and anticipate at hand requirements.

The Internet has made busyness development more rapid and financially reparative, allowing for unintermitted distribution wirelessly around-the-globe. Large software firms have florescent their possess applications for array to customers swank online stores. My humble self link their brands with applications to unearned income them more appealing and popular. Wireless applications taste burgeoned and are the wave in relation with the future.

Custom Software Development
Matter of course software is software that is specially developed for some specific codification bandeau other user. As such, it can be contrasted with the use of software packages developed for the mass small business, such as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, or prevalent free software.
Custom software chemical toilet be developed toward an in-house software burgeoning group, blazon be commissioned from a software house or independent software developer.
Since racial memory software is developed for a either customer it can accommodate that customer’s particular preferences and expectations. Custom software may have being witting in stage by stage processes, allowing all nuances and possible hidden dangers to persist taken into account, in addition to issues which were not mentioned in the specifications.
Thus Mobile App Amplification and Custom Software Development have been pretentious in detail.

What is cloud computing?

Everyone is talking about “the cloud.” But what does it mean?

Business applications are moving to the cloud. It’s not just a fad—the shift from traditional software models to the Internet has steadily gained momentum over the last 10 years. Looking ahead, the next decade of cloud computing promises new ways to collaborate everywhere, through mobile devices.

Life before cloud computing

Traditional business applications have always been very complicated and expensive. The amount and variety of hardware and software required to run them are daunting. You need a whole team of experts to install, configure, test, run, secure, and update them.

When you multiply this effort across dozens or hundreds of apps, it’s easy to see why the biggest companies with the best IT departments aren’t getting the apps they need. Small and mid-sized businesses don’t stand a chance.

Cloud computing: a better way

With cloud computing, you eliminate those headaches because you’re not managing hardware and software—that’s the responsibility of an experienced vendor like The shared infrastructure means it works like a utility: You only pay for what you need, upgrades are automatic, and scaling up or down is easy.

Cloud-based apps can be up and running in days or weeks, and they cost less. With a cloud app, you just open a browser, log in, customize the app, and start using it.

Businesses are running all kinds of apps in the cloud, like customer relationship management (CRM), HR, accounting, and much more. Some of the world’s largest companies moved their applications to the cloud with after rigorously testing the security and reliability of our infrastructure.

As cloud computing grows in popularity, thousands of companies are simply rebranding their non-cloud products and services as “cloud computing.” Always dig deeper when evaluating cloud offerings and keep in mind that if you have to buy and manage hardware and software, what you’re looking at isn’t really cloud computing but a false cloud.

Cloud Computing from Salesforce.

“Here are cloud computing basics for those asking, “What is cloud computing?” Cloud computing is quickly replacing the traditional model of having software applications installed on on-premise hardware, from desktop computers to rooms full of servers, depending on the size of the business. With cloud computing, businesses access applications via the internet. It’s called Software As A Service (or SaaS). Businesses are freed up from having to maintain or upgrade software and hardware. Just log on and get to work, from anywhere and, in many cases, any device. Salesforce is the leader in cloud computing, offering applications for all aspects of your business, including CRM, sales, ERP, customer service, marketing automation, business analytics, mobile application building, and much more. And it all works on the same, connected platform, drawing from the same customer data. So as opposed to working in silos, your entire company can work as one a team. And because it’s all in cloud as opposed to being installed on-premise, even the largest, enterprise-wide deployments can happen in a fraction of the time of traditional deployments, which can take over a year. ”

man chronologicalimplosion i want you to know you very nearly ended up with some weird confused drawing of ember as some kind of haunted sound editing interface. i’ve never heard of vocaloid and was super confused when at first google i discovered it was a software application

Difference Between NAT and Proxy…

Network Address Translation (NAT) is the process that modifies the IP address in a header of an IP packet, while it is travelling through a routing device. NAT allows one set of IP addresses to be used for traffic within a LAN (Local Area Network) and another set of IP addresses for outside traffic. One to one transformation of IP addresses are provided by the simplest form of NAT. Proxy (proxy server) is a server that is located between a client (who is looking for a resource) and some other server and acts as a mediator. The client requesting the resource connects to the proxy server and the proxy evaluates the request based on its filtering rules.

Staring back, you weren’t sure what to say as you looked over Joe, your polite and courteous agreement had remained upheld for a few months but slowly you crossed paths less and less until you moved to London to take graphic design, you hadn’t seen or heard from Joe since you both graduated (from different schools) but ended up at the same graduation party said; ‘Hey’ and carried on…

“… Joe.” You finally managed a single word after everything finally settled in that he was really sitting in front of you right now. “You two know each other?” Liam the man who came to ask you if you’d meet the person you’d be helping design their graphic novel, looked between the two of you.

“We grew up in the same neighbourhood.” Joe said quickly sparing you both some awkwardness. “Oh, how neat is that.” Liam laughed a little and you flashed a half fake smile with a slight laugh.

“Despite you both knowing each other it would only be fair to formally introduce you both for the companies sake. “Joe Sugg – (Y/First&Last/N) and vice versa.” Liam made gestures pointing the two of you out like you didn’t have a clue.

“Nice seeing you again.” You said with the best fake smile you could pull from your ass. “Likewise.” Joe said smiling an uncomfortable smile.

“Well, we have some more inter-company stuff to discuss if maybe you wanted to show Joe where you make the magic happen.” Liam laughed as he wiggled his eyebrows, he always kind of hit on you – even though he was over double your age and married, you usually ignored him.

A weird feeling came over you seeing Joe slightly narrow his eyes in Liam’s direction but he couldn’t see Joe.

“Sure…” You said rubbing your arm going to leave the meeting room. “Thank you guys, so much.” Joe said as he stood up, looking at the three men who smiled at him. “We can’t wait to work with you Joe.” Liam said as Joe left the room following your lead, the silence that overcame the two of you as you walked down the hallway was thick enough it seemed other people in the building stopped talking or making noise as you both walked by.

“I didn’t know you we into graphic design.” Joe finally spoke as you walked around a corner. “Hmm? Oh yeah… Got really into it at school my last two years.” You didn’t know how you should act around him, you weren’t sure if the years gone by meant you shouldn’t be so touchy still – in fact you didn’t even know you still felt this touchy about him.

You went from thinking about somebody every day – almost all day to a few times a day a couple times a week to an occasional thought at random times to almost never.

So to have them just reappear back into your life and start feeling almost exactly the same way as you did years ago … You weren’t prepared for that and it was throwing you off.

“Oh wow…” Joe whispered in awe as you opened your office door, your office housed a lot of desks one with an iMac, keyboard and mouse, another was a tilted desk with pencils of every colour and led thickness the imagination could dream of.

“What’s that?” Joe was eyeing a smaller blank canvas which had a stylus magnetised to the side. “Oh, it’s a digital sketch pad… It connects with the iMac so I draw here…” You picked up the stylus and drew on it quickly but the canvas remained blank, you gestured to the iMac to where on a software application;

had appeared just like your typical handwriting. “Oh wow.” Joe said amazed before he looked sad. “What?” You asked seeing his expressions change from opposites quickly. “Nothing.” He shook his head and you sighed. “Come on – what?” You didn’t know why you were pressing for an answer.

“It’s just … I haven’t seen my name written like that in years – just takes me back, I guess – sorry.” He muttered, looking away.

“Oh.” You hadn’t realised. “That made things awkward, I’m sorry.” Joe whispered, putting his hands into the pockets of his black skinny jeans.

“So…” You tried changing the subject quickly. “When did you move up to London? Last I talked to Zoe you were thatching roofs?” You wondered curiously while trying not to come across as nosey. “Oh, uhm – two thousand and twelve, I moved up here to do YouTube.” He explained. “YouTube how?” You wondered, seeing a flash of hurt in his eyes that you hadn’t been watching him or something.

“Oh I just do videos and sometimes vlogs.” He waved it off. “Oh yeah? That’s interesting.” You nodded, this was the longest conversation the pair of you had held since the train station many moons ago.

“It’s a really fun job.” He smiled about it. “But it looks like you’re doing a pretty fun job, too.” He pointed out looking at some of the prints on the walls with your signatures on the corner.

“Oh yeah – it’s fun.” You nodded. “Stressful sometimes but mostly fun.” You added and he laughed a little looking back to you.

“(Y/N)…” He said your name softly it made your feel weird again. “Yes..?” You asked carefully, your heart started beating quicker.

“How’s it going in here guys?” Liam asked poking his head through the door, cutting off Joe before he got a chance to speak again.

“Fine – good – yeah.” You said dryly, you weren’t the fondest of Liam most of the time, but right now in the moment you really weren’t fond of him.

“Has she shown you how she uses her magic fingers Joe?” Liam laughed with a perverted smile and you rolled your eyes. “Uhm.” Joe said not sure of how to proceed with answering the question.

It may have been years, but you could still see the changes in Joe’s eyes and what they meant. “Yeah – we’re fine, you know this part has nothing to do with you right?” You spoke to Liam before Joe could and he laughed, putting his hands on your shoulders rubbing up and down your upper arms a little. “Ohh… But I know you love when I come – to visit you.” He tagged on the end after a brief pause.

“Not really – ever do I like when you come near me.” You had removed his hands from your body and stepped away.

Liam looked a little put out by you, but picked himself up quickly. “Anyway.” He clapped his hands together. “We’ve got this, you can go.” You made a gesture out the door for him to leave. “I’m just over seeing the process.” Liam was trying his hardest to stay within the four walls of your space.

“Okay, well – you can stay here and have fun with that, I’m going on lunch.” You grabbed your black cardigan pulling it on, before putting your handbag over your shoulder. “Show you out?” You asked looking at Joe who was just staring at Liam. “… Yeah, please.” Joe said nodded following you as you left the office.

Standing in the elevator who felt Joe’s eyes on you as you looked forward, you slowly turned your head to meet his stare. “What?” You asked.

“I don’t like him,” he said simply but with a dark undertone and you laughed, “nobody does.” You assured walking off the elevator as the doors opened to the ground level.

“And why is he touching you like that? Isn’t that like workplace harassment?” He was serious as you both walked outside, the air was warm as the Sun was at high-noon without a cloud in the sky. “Joe, it isn’t your concern.” You muttered.

“Well, yeah it is.” He said, still walking beside you. “No – no it’s not.” You stopped walking, to look at him face to face. “I didn’t need you getting up in my business when we were teenagers, I don’t need you to start trying now.” You narrowed your eyes at him.

“I’m looking out for you.” Joe pointed out. “Well, stop. I don’t need you too.” Your tone was to the point.

“(Y/N).” Joe said.

“No. Just – just stop.” You put your hands up frustrated, before he could say anything more. “I don’t need you okay? I can look after myself, I have for years… I don’t know what you might be thinking, that years have gone by and all should be forgiven and forgotten… But it’s not.” You watched him as he was watching you. “Things aren’t just going to fall back to where they were now that we’re finished school Joe.”

“I wasn’t saying that it should, I’m just trying to be your friend again.” Joe sighed and you shook your head. “Well, stop – we aren’t friends. We’re work associates.”

“You can’t deny that something didn’t bring us back together – that’s fate or something.” Joe countered you and you breathlessly laughed, “no … Joe it’s not fate, it’s because every other YouTuber in the UK has gotten a book deal with this company.” You gestured to the large building you had both walked out of. “That’s it.” You snapped a little.

“I’ll get the sketches faxed to me and I’ll work on them, you’ll either say yes or no and that’s it.” You nodded, walking away from him without looking back as you crossed the street, you hadn’t realised Joe’s eyes became glassed over and tears were trying not to fall…

Parents as a Security Threat (1.0)

Inspired by swanjolras, cool PGP guide writer person. Apparently, there’s not a lot of content about this threat model, so here’s some! Remember, don’t trust anonymous strangers like me, but we’re probably not the most likely threat to your security.

  • Remember, your biggest risk is probably being coerced into giving up your passwords. Ideally, have some means by which you can make this clear if you’re forced to do so. (You can set up a second computer account that is allegedly your normal one, but having some signal set up in advance you can use with your friends to indicate duress is probably a good idea. If you can’t use PGP, signing all your messages a certain way and changing it if under duress could work.)
  • Using small fonts, forcing all websites to use the same fonts (I know Tor lets you, probably Firefox, not sure about others), and using an image-blocker plug-in/extension/add-on can inhibit over-the-shoulder screen-reading.
  • I set up my computer to make myself type both the username and password on log-in. If I log in with a barely-visibly-modified version of my username and one of my old passwords, I get to an account with the same background as mine, but it has a “software update” dialogue box that sends off an emergency email if you say no to the “update.” Do a Google search to get exact text for added realism. It’s just an application created in the included-by-default-on-Macs program Automator and set to be a “login item” and be hidden, no command-line stuff needed. (Details for Mac users to come.)
  • If you have an account you want linked to your real name, truncate the name so that it is harder to search for. Scott Alexander of Slate Star Codex and slatestarscratchpad goes by his first and middle name so that people searching for his first and last name don’t find him.
  • If you want good privacy, then you want admin access. A potential way to get this if you don’t have it is to constantly need/“need” to do stuff that requires an admin password. (Installing applications, updating software, adding wallpapers to the wallpaper folder in the main Library folder instead of your user folder… the list can be made endless.) The easiest option for your parents will begin to look like either refusing the requests or handing over the password.
  • If you can’t get admin access, you still often don’t need it to run apps. I can run Tor off a restricted account, I just can’t put it in the shared applications folder.
  • If you’re worried those phone systems that record at arbitrary, non-phone-call times, use Voice Memos or the like to test how much insulation your phone needs to be unable to pick up sound. Keep it in that much when not in use “in case you drop your bag”.
  • If you’re on a shared computer, using the same passphrase a lot is still better than telling the computer to remember your passwords. You can remove remembered passwords from web browsers in the preferences, and from a Mac in the application (found in the Utilities folder) Keychain Access.
  • If you’re not on a shared computer, lock it such that you need a password to get in every time you walk away.
  • Encrypt your backup drive, not just your normal drive.
