social standings

The time I got to be North America

I just remembered this little tidbit from when I was in the sixth grade. My social studies teacher was doing a demonstration on well, I think it was the different economies of the world and how money was distributed(frankly I hardly remember most of what I was taught in school so bear with me). He gave every student a card that had the name of a country on it. I was the only one who got “North America.”

We went outside where chalk countries had been drawn and everyone had to stand in the country they were given in class. My social studies teacher proceeded to use mini milky way candies as examples of how money was distributed. Most of the countries got about one or two or four milky ways which weren’t enough for everybody who were assigned those countries.

Then he got to me, the only one in the North America square and he proceeded to dump the remaining amount of candy (which was almost an entire bag) at my feet which I think represented how wealthy North America was…frankly I was just stoked I got free candy (which I did share with anyone who wanted some afterwards).

kids are fun bc they dont give a shit and have no inclination of social norms. Im standing in the self checkout rn and this little girl has not broken eye contact for atleast 50 seconds

I think the fatal flaw in most of the characters on the tapes is that they are selfish. So, so, selfish. They are teenagers, so this comes as no surprise. Even Hannah. Justin wanted to keep his gf and bff, so he ignored what happened, Marcus wanted to keep his social standing, Courtney wasn’t ready for people to know she’s a lesbian, Alex used Hannah to get back and Jess and then didn’t refute it (in the locker room) because it made him look better, Ryan wanted his zine to be popular, Sheri wasn’t willing to face the consequences of her actions, Bryce took whatever he wanted (and can go and fucking die) etc.

But one character on the tapes that was not selfish was Clay. When he first met Hannah, he was awkward and nervous but polite. At that moment in time, I think the most he hoped for was being friends with Hannah. As the show progressed, so did their friendship and it flowered into an almost-relationship.

At that moment in Hannah’s life, even though she wanted to be happy, even though she wanted to be with Clay, she couldn’t. She couldn’t wash away what had happened to her in the past even though she knew that Clay wouldn’t hurt her like the others did. She knew he was kind and decent and so unselfish. But in the case of Clay, this unselfishness may have been his downfall.

See, he wanted Hannah. So much. But he never pushed and always did what she asked. This made the audience love him, and also Hannah. But Hannah had been friends with him for what, a year? She would know that he is timid and shy, especially when it comes to girls. She knew that when she told him to leave, he would leave. It was completely selfish and mean of her to tell Clay on the tapes that she wished he didn’t go. Did she not think that that would tear him apart?

Anyways, back to Clay. If Clay had been a little more selfish in that scene, like we saw when he said what he wished he had said, that could have made all the difference. If Hannah had known that just one person was on her side, I don’t think she would have killed herself. I really don’t. If Clay had been selfish for just a moment and had said, “No, I’m not going to leave until you tell me what’s going on,” like he wished he did, I truly believe Hannah would still be alive.

Do This if You Stand with Standing Rock

Today is the day that all the Water Protectors at Standing Rock are supposed to evacuate. We can only assume they will be met with heavy, volatile force soon. In 2016, the organizers on the front lines of the Lakota asked us to make two social media posts per day since the issue is not being covered in the mainstream media. Today, more than ever, it is important that you leverage your Twitters, Instagrams, and Facebook profiles to stand with Standing Rock. Make just one post on each of your platforms. You can speak from the heart or you can share a meme or image, etc. But please, put it out there into the world that we do stand with Standing Rock, and that we won’t stand for rights of Native peoples being stomped on any longer. First ten people to take a screenshot of their post with today’s date on either Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook will be entered into a drawing to receive the shirt of their choice free. Just DM it to the Instagram (specialsnowflakestorm) or message it to the Tumblr.

So first love your tumblr page, secondly I would like some advice, if that's alright to ask. I'm trying to write a story with a character from Oregon and I would like some idea on if they be any phrases words anything really to make it believable

- everyone from Oregon ends their sentences with “praise be to Bigfoot” to show both humility and gratitude
- Oregonians, colloquially known as “Orgies”, make a lot of puns about oregano
- Oregonians (“Orgies”) have a bitter rivalry with Washingtonians. Every seven years, on the appointed day, it is a tradition for residents of each state to gather on opposite sides of the Columbia River and hurl insults and rocks at each other. Since the Columbia River is very wide and throwing something across it is very difficult, these encounters can’t really be considered violent. It would be unrealistic if your character is from Oregon (or Washington) and does not frequently reference this important tradition.
- The Oregon Trail is considered a holy game, and it is always played at funerals to determine who in the family will be the next to die. If the game’s prediction is wrong, Orgies ignore reality and treat the prematurely deceased like living people while shunning those who were expected to die.
- You do not pump your own gas in Oregon - station attendants do it for you. Similarly, you’re not allowed to feed yourself at restaurants - specialized waiters and waitresses come to your table, sit you in their laps, and spoon-feed you.
- Do not mention that Oregon has fewer reported Bigfoot sightings than either California or Washington unless you want to be banned from the state
- In the more liberal parts of the state, you are expected to experiment sexually with a waterfall (if male) or a volcano (if female) at some point before graduating college
- for political complications, the role of black people will be played by white people with locked hair for this production
- A $4.35 cup of coffee in California will cost $400 in Oregon. If you complain, the barista will gently remind you, “No sales tax!” and you’ll end up buying six refills
- Social standing is expressed via the number of bumper stickers on your car.
- The state tree is the Douglas fir - a majestic conifer. In Oregon, a boner is frequently referred to as a “Douglas” or even just “Doug”. If an Orgie suddenly exclaims, “I’ve got to go meet up with Dougie,” it means he has become sexually aroused in an embarrassing way and will seek out the nearest waterfall to ease himself.
- A geoduck is a species of large, edible clam. “Geoduck” is therefore used as slang for both “penis” and “vagina”. The phrase “go Ducks!”, shouted at sportsball competitions, is actually a celebration of sexual liberation.
- Orgies do not use slang like “cool” or “tubular” or “awesome”. Instead, they say “That’s organic!”
- If a white guy tells you about the “spirit quest” he went on, he means he went camping and smoked a lot of weed. I mean a lot. Of. Weed.
- A popular sport is food truck racing.
- If a young person appears single, they are probably in a committed relationship with their bicycle.
- The most popular epithet to be engraved on tombstones is “Gone Squatchin’”

Hello, I was wondering if you could help me. Lately I've come across the healthy/unhealthy personality types. Though I know, that I'm an ENTP, I would like to learn, how you can tell whether they are healthy or not. Would be great if you would explain this. Thanks in advance PS.: I'm not sure, if this is the right place to ask my questions, so correct me if the 'question' section isn't the right one.

It’s the right place. All the mods are pretty chill coz we’re awesome. :)

Unhealthy NTP: never finishes anything or focuses on the details (zero follow through), uses their Fe to manipulate people (you’re soft, and a pansy, and making you fall for my BS is so fun, maybe I can even get you to cry by pointing out how stupid your ideas are!) or intentionally hurt them rather than forge genuine connections or take into consideration people’s feelings.

Healthy NTP: knows which ideas are better than others, in order to focus on bringing them into fruition and either commits to them long-term by selecting a creative partner (Ne/Fe) or giving their ideas away to others who can nail down the details. Is logical but gentle in correcting others, mindful that people’s feelings matter and it’s important for others to genuinely like you in life, in order to get things done (and because it’s the nice thing to do). Realizes they’re prone to hyperbole, short term interests, and exaggeration, and learns to laugh about it, but also acknowledge it and work on fixing it. Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy NFP: never finishes anything or focuses on details (zero follow through), follows their heart without regard for the consequences, using that to justify hurtful behavior (I don’t care what you think, I fell out of love with you, so I can cheat on you all I want, I’ve done nothing wrong, this is who I am, just deal with it or get out), refuses to take blame for their part of the problem, may intentionally offend others, and doesn’t care about anyone but themselves.

Healthy NFP: knows which ideas are better than others and seeks to bring the best ones into the world through healthy engagement of goals, deadlines, and process of elimination (Te). Sets personal deadlines for self, and beats them, in order to stay motivated. Understands what drives them most, slows them down, or angers them, and commits to doing something about it. Learns such things as “tact,” when dealing with others, but also when and where to defy social norms and stand up for oneself (does that really matter? is it worth a fight?). Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy NTJ: becomes obnoxious in pushing their “vision” on others or asserting they know everything (including your motives) while devaluing your feelings or beliefs, often sneers at people who make emotional decisions, and sometimes passive-aggressively attacks people’s ego or intelligence that they do not like (okay, stupid, I’m just going to make you look like an idiot, while correcting every damn thing you say, all day long, until you run away and cry).

Healthy NTJ: has a fair, balanced, and open-minded approach to life, is willing to listen to others’ ideas and offer practical thoughts on them, but is neither arrogant nor pushy about their knowledge, expertise, and logical detachment. Chooses when to correct others with care, and never does so to humiliate, only to educate. Respects others’ feelings even if they personally feel that the other person is making a mistake. Focuses on taking their ideas and goals and making them real. Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy NFJ: total detachment from reality, while stubbornly clinging to the belief that their irrational interpretation is “the truth” (and the ONLY truth) (It DOES make sense, you’re just too stupid to understand it!), and resorting to a “you’re either with us or against us” mentality, which manifests in creating a single universal (sometimes abstract) enemy and trying to recruit others to join their cause against them / you (bad Ni and Fe).

Healthy NFJ: has a fair, balanced, and open-minded approach to life, accepts their interpretation may be unrealistic, but is committed to bringing their ideas and visualizations to life, often by recruiting others to a positive common cause. Uses their understanding of others’ motives to uplift rather than tear down, and becomes a source of compassionate and guiding “wisdom” for friends (I worry about you choosing this path, and here’s why…). Never recruits others in any negative ways against someone who disagrees with them. Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy STP: irresponsible, reckless, and hedonistic, engaging in short-term behaviors that leave a wake of destruction behind (broken marriages, families, and violated responsibilities), often using Fe to manipulate people to get what they want (hey, I’m super hot and I’ve seen you ogling my backside, so I’m going to wear something that accentuates it so you’ll give me what I want in return one of these days; I don’t care how wrong it is) and then dumping them like hotcakes.

Healthy STP: knows life has much to offer and not only enjoys it but helps others loosen up and try new things, but commits to the people, beliefs, and jobs that are most important to them, for the long term. Understands and respects others’ feelings and seeks to connect to them through that, as well as develop their own ability to communicate. Learns the art of tact and when to use it (is it worth correcting this person or does it matter?). Tries to think about the long-term consequences of impulse, before engaging in it. Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy SFP: irresponsible, reckless, and hedonistic, going through jobs and romantic relationships like wildfire, abandoning people every time they get “bored” or feel unattached; justifies this behavior with selfish reasoning (I just don’t love you anymore, so I don’t have to treat you with respect); unable to be counted upon by other people, since they never show up or follow through; refuses to take responsibility through their actions and doesn’t mind offending others for no reason at all.

Healthy SFP: is good at self-entertaining and eager to try new things, and infects others with a similar excitement; is good at pushing people out of their comfort zones and encouraging them to aim high for their dreams. Has a strong sense of personal beliefs, and is willing to commit to other people, and prioritize them in relationships. Knows when it’s appropriate to defy social convention, and when it’s better to dial back the “but this is just who I am!” and chill. Sets personal goals, deadlines, and achievements, and sticks with things, so they have something tangible to show for their time (Te). Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy STJ: refuses to adapt or change even when their world implodes; may try and “force” or “strong-arm” others into their point of view. Has little interest or respect for people’s feelings and doesn’t mind crushing them on their way to success, but may also play the role of a martyr in the process (since NO ONE ELSE IS RESPONSIBLE AROUND HERE, I HAVE TO DO IT). May become irrational or paranoid with lower Ne, and turn into a pessimist.

Healthy STJ: uses their extensive past experience to figure out what will and won’t work when dealing with life and problems, but is also open to new ideas, trying out new things, and experiencing what “lies beneath the surface” (Ne). Tries not to shut down ideas until they have considered them. Is practical, efficient, and logical, but also respects people’s feelings and doesn’t intentionally try to hurt, shame, or control them. Becomes able to share what they need emotionally with others, rather than playing a martyr (I would like it if you would take the trash out; since I’m doing this other thing, it seems fair, and it would make me happy). Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

Unhealthy SFJ: refuses to change or adapt, while clinging stubbornly to their idea of “how things were,” while struggling to control their emotions; may resort to being “fake” in order to manipulate others, to “us vs them” thinking and overt moralizing (if you don’t agree with us, you’d better change your mind or face the consequences, because we can’t let you hold such a wrong point of view and will punish you for it).

Healthy SFJ: uses the past to form impressions about people and situations, but changes those perceptions based on new experience; is open to new ideas and beliefs, and willing to look beneath the surface (Ne), with the aim of making those things “useful and tangible” in the real world (how can this idea apply to life and improve our situation?). Learns the art of “polite affirming correction,” which helps others become better, while not shaming, humiliating, or insulting them for their behavior. Aware not everyone needs to agree, and comfortable with those who don’t; never recruits anyone against anyone else, or adopts a mentality of “let’s get that person, together.” Takes personal responsibility for their mistakes.

- ENFP Mod

Aries are described as brash and offensive, egocentric and reckless..but they are exploring life with the bare innocence of a child, chartered by brilliant imagination, they are putting together a personality, so they are learning at every moment. Taureans are gluttonous, obsessed with food and overeat comes up a lot… I think it’s more the expression of a high sensory sensitivity, a longing for gourmet and culinary delight… Taurus is the enjoyment of good food and good wine … wellness and pleasure… Gemini is not so ‘split’ in the sense of being purely binary, but rather very adaptable and multiple, they can wear a thousand faces with some sort of chameleon magic… Cancer is not merely an obedient mother, but more the zodiac’s most powerful, enchanted protector, guardian, and creator. Cancer is how we find God, through the channel that bought us life. Cardinal energy can be a great assault and Water is no weak element… Leo is as egocentric and grandiose as he is self conscious and self contemptuous. In his mirror is not always a royal lion but also a frightened child… Virgo not so much compulsive in cleanliness but more the individual needs to structure the environment in an order that makes some sort of sense in her mind, doesn’t have to for the rest of us… there are patterns they make no one else can see…Libra is not avoidant or always threatened by conflict, some of the world’s most formidable leaders are Libras…many pioneering female leaders in history. Saturn, the sign of social standing and prestige exalts in Libra. Scorpio information centres around their brutality, envy, and violatily. But Scorpio is also the great healer, the underworld sorceress, the wise mystic. Sagittarius is not an air headed backpacker nor a simple clown… Sagittarius is a sign of tremendous spiritual potential, intuition for symbolism, and deep psychological work. There is a guru that rests inside Sagittarius. Capricorn is not always so cold and self interested in professional ascension. Often there is a significant human concern and conscience. They cherish the accreditation and recognition of people more than others realise. Aquarius is not always bizarre and eccentric but rather a direct expression of a purely individual spirit, this isn’t always flamboyant and grand, but an Aquarius walks to his own beat in life, and he wouldn’t even notice or try to be eccentric… Pisces can be regarded as weak and melancholic, although the greater benefic Jupiter rules Pisces… fortune is found where they seek with the spirit… much power can be wielded by the Pisces sign

Lyra and Cithara
Synaulia
Lyra and Cithara

Synaulia is a musical group that recreates Ancient Roman music, since none survives. This beautiful piece recreates the sounds of a cithara, a stringed instrument from the lyre family. The cithara usually accompanied poem recitals and dances, and was often played at drinking parties, banquets and gatherings.

Sappho is closely associated with music, especially string instruments like the kithara and the barbitos. She was a woman of high social standing and composed songs that focused on the emotions. A Greek mythology story goes that she ascended the steep slopes of Mount Parnassus where she was welcomed by the Muses. She wandered through the laurel grove and came upon the cave of Apollo, where she bathed in the Castalian Spring and took Phoebusplectrum to play skillful music. The sacred nymphs danced while she stroked the strings with much talent to bring forth sweet musical melodies from the resonant kithara “ - (x)

what i really like is how every single parental figure harry has had (besides his dead parents) has been shown to be incredibly flawed. this is something that you rarely see in any book, let alone a children’s series.

you have hagrid who loves harry so so so much but also isnt the smartest of men and often gets too emotional to use the logic that he does have. he loves so passionately, that he refuses to see the bad in anyone (mainly because of the prejudice he has faced). this doesn’t bode well for harry because of the constant accidental slips of information and his undying loyalty to dumbledore and any other character he finds to be admirable.

molly who loves harry as one of her own, but smothers him desperately. she is so protective of harry that at times she almost sees him as her property (“he’s not your son”, “he’s as good as!”). she coddles him immensely, and even though he has seen tragedy and death more times than she could ever imagine, she still treats him as if he is a wounded stray in need of her biscuits and warmth.

dumbledore who acted as if he viewed harry as his equal, only to be raising him for slaughter. dumbledore who let harry live in an abusive home and go through these horrors, just to shape him into this perfect martyr. dumbledore who viewed harry as a chess piece, making sure that he stays alive long enough to vanquish the dark lord.

sirius, who loved harry more than anything in the world. sirius who broke out of azkaban and stayed inside his old home that constantly reminded him of his past, the aspect of himself he never wanted to confront. sirius, who saw so much of james in harry. sirius who never got the revenge he craved, but now he has his best friend back…well, a version of his best friend. sirius who grew cold towards his godson whenever he didn’t act exactly like his father would have.

remus, who saw and understood the nightmares that harry had to face. remus who didn’t see harry as his mother or father, but as a child who was forced to grow up far too fast to face things no human should ever have to face. remus, though he loved harry, could never truly be there for him. remus who was so riddled with his own self-hatred that he could never allow himself to get close to harry, the way he knew harry needed him to.

arthur, who was a humble man who stood up for what was right. he too saw harry as one of his sons. arthur, who despite his social standing did his hardest to provide a good life for his family. arthur who too often worried that harry would end up dead, and that he would bring one of his other children down with him. arthur who loved harry, but secretly feared what having harry potter in his life would do to his own.
