hi! request: reader goes to see columbus to see joshie boy on his birthday. idk this sounds cute in my head
I’m sorry this is super short, and it might be bad. I’m with family this weekend and wrote this on my phone quickly because it was such a cute idea! I hope you like this!
“Babe,” Josh’s voice is sweet like honey, like it always was when he was trying to sweet talk you. “It’s my birthday, you have to do what I want.” He was trying to convince you to ditch work and fly to Ohio to be with him and his family on his birthday. At first, you weren’t able to get the time off, and you had to tell your all too excited boyfriend that your sweet vacation wasn’t happening. Of course he was bummed out, but he knew how hard you worked. But a couple days after you told him, schedule changes were made and you ended up getting the time off. And instead of telling him, you called his mom and set up a surprise. You were currently in the Columbus airport, smiling next to Laura as you pretended to be in LA.
“Babe, I know,” you pretend to sound disappointed. “But I’m at work right now and I’m literally swimming in paperwork. I can’t even get to the door!” You send a wink in Laura’s direction. She offers you a small giggle.
Josh sighs. “Sometimes I think you work harder than me.”
“I think you love that about me.”
“…. yeah you’re right. Okay baby. I just miss you, it’s not the same without you. My mom has been talking about you nonstop!”
You stifle a laugh. “Oh has she?” You throw another look at your boyfriends mom. She only raises her eyebrows at you. “Well you tell her that I’m sorry I couldn’t be there to celebrate her favourite sons birthday.”
“I will!” Josh replies, half laughing. “She already knows.” He pauses for a moment. “I really do miss you baby,” he sighs.
“I know my love,” I try to match his tone. But I was excited. No matter how much time Josh and I could spend a part - whether is was a day or six months - my heart missed him the moment he was gone. “But it’s only a couple days baby, and then we can celebrate when you get back,” you try and make your tone as suggestive as you could with his mom standing beside you.
“I like the sounds of that.”
“I have to go now though, babe. My boss is giving me the look through the door,” you lie. “But I love you so much and I hope you have an amazing time tonight. And if I haven’t said it already, happy birthday baby, I’m grateful for your presence.”
“Thanks, love,” you can hear the smile in his voice and it only makes you miss him more. “I love you so much. And I probably miss you even more. I’ll call you tonight, okay?”
“Sounds good. Talk to you later.” You pressed end on your phone and stick it back into your pocket before smiling at Laura. “He has no idea.”
Laura grins and claps her hands in anticipation. “Good! I put Jordan and Ashley on distraction duty and they’ll be running him around all day, so we’ll have plenty of time to set up.”
The party was in full swing. You had been instructed to hide in Laura and Bill’s bed room until they were ready to sing happy birthday. You were going to bring the cake to Josh.
You could hear him laughing and talking with all of the guests, and occasionally your phone would buzz with texts. It only made you long for him more. Josh never made you feel unwanted, no matter how many people wanted to talk to him or tried to pull his attention - he would always keep his hand securely in yours. He would always introduce you to anyone he would with a ‘this is my beautiful girlfriend.’ And sometimes you weren’t sure how you got so lucky.
“Alright Y/N!” Laura calls you, you can hear the excitement in her voice. “It’s time!!”
She sneaks you through the living room as Ashley and Jordan distract Josh quickly. The cake was homemade and in the shape of an alien head. You knew Josh was going to love it.
“Alright everyone!” Laura calls attention to the guests crowding the house. “We’re gonna do cake now so Josh, if you want to take your spot at the table.” There was a murmur of voices and shuffling of feet and you take that as your cue to light the candles and prepare to take it out.
Laura starts the singing and everyone quickly joins in and you began the walk out to your unsuspecting boyfriend. He looks up, making eye contact and a smile instantly appears on his face.
“What!!” He’s grinning and your heart flutters. A couple people laugh at his reaction but you can’t take your eyes away from him. He stands up to hug you, but his mom sends him a look and he sits back down. He has to wait until you set the cake down. So you purposely walk slow, milking out the time he has to wait. And the whole time, his eyes never leave yours.
You time it out so that you’re setting down the cake for the last lines of the song. Josh takes a moment, squeezes his eyes shut, sucks in a deep breath and blows out all his candles with one breath. People clap and cheer as Josh quickly stands up and pulls you into a hug.
“What are you doing here?” He asks with a laugh and he pulls you tighter to him before letting go to look at your face.
“I couldn’t just not be here to celebrate your birthday with you,” you smile, leaning in for a kiss. It may not have been very long since you had seen each other, but no matter the distance, you always missed each other.
“What did you wish for Josh?” Someone calls out, and everyone turns to look.
But Josh stays looking at you, smiling. He moves one arm around your shoulders and pulls you tight to his side before looking up with a big grin on his face to the group of people. “Her.”
