Hick (2011) - Derick Martini

5 bullets on this film:

  • Many people didn’t like this movie because it has a boring and slow pace. But it’s a road movie!!! It’s supposed to be like this!! Most of the scenes are gonna be about the protagonist walking around the desert with a country song playing in the backgrund. Keep that in mind and try to enjoy the damn movie.
  • The characters have a strong personality and they are well defined. I love Luli, the main character, so much. She’s one of the women who inspire me AND SHE’S NOT EVEN REAL.

  • If Eddie Redmayne and Chloe Grace Moretz weren’t in this movie it would suck a little bit. Honestly, they are way better than this script. Eddie, you always in my heart.

  • It’s very similar to the book it was based on, but I think the movie lacks ‘personality’. The dialogues aren’t natural, and I feel like something more could have been added.

  • The cinematography is really good, and I really like the costume design. It’s not original or extraordinary, but it’s a nice colorful - indie - cute movie.

@anulworld Well, as a stand alone episode I LOVED it! You know, it was intense and scary and unpredictable and cinematography was on point and it was all very clever as always but……. in the context of everything else??? It was the biggest disappointment of the century tbh. Like, I personally never ~actually~ believed in TJLC but there really were lots of implications of that and the showrunners gave the fandom so SO much hope that after seeing everyone being so sure that John and Sherlock would get together or something it’s just heartbreaking going through the tag and seeing how mad and disappointed everyone is. I mean technically yes, they basically ended up living together raising a baby but they still weren’t shown as a couple or anything like that, that topic was never brought up despite the conversation in the last episode leading up to it. And I don’t know if they are going to finally do it in the future episodes (because that ending actually seemed like the perfect ground for finally exploring that relationship on another level) but it’s still cruel just ending the episode like that without stating anything explicitly because this is a show that puts out 3 episodes only after a 2-year hiatus so making the fans stick around that long using their loyalty and knowing they’re starving for representation - that’s some really heartless queerbaiting imo. And while that’s still not entirely surprising I would just really like to know why the hell Mark Gatiss is doing this. (Side note: I also hate how they only showed Molly one time just to break her heart once again)

Limitless - 1x01 - Pilot

“Hi. My name is Brian Finch, and the first thing you should know about me is I didn’t do anything wrong. Well, not the kind of wrong that leads to having a gun in your face, anyway. I’ll explain.”

I’m halfway through the first episode of a series of unfortunate events and honestly it’s so awful, it’s literally just a worse remake of the film with neil patrick harris wearing a huge fake nose talking about how much he loves money and copying jim carey and all of the cinematography and soundtrack looks like it came from a college kid trying to recreate a wes anderson film, I think they’ve kept to the story well but there’s so much they could have done differently

Black Mass -- a cumberbatchy review

I saw Black Mass last night – it was good!  I mean, I generally enjoy gangster flicks, and while this one didn’t break much new ground artistically, it was still fun and interesting and well-made.  Johnny Depp fully convinced me as someone who could inspire loyalty and admiration as well as abject terror.  There was also some lovely cinematography, and I *loved* seeing all those back corners of old South Boston.  And the old cars!  Beautiful.

Since I grew up in New England, I spent the first twenty minutes or so critiquing everyone’s accents (no, no, nope) but after that I let it go.

And Cumberbatch?  Well…  I was impressed.  Just like in The Imitation Game, it’s almost surreal how *not sherlock* he becomes.  A totally different human.  And while it’s not a huge role, it is a difficult one, and I thought he did a wonderful job conveying the complicated relationship between Billy and Whitey Bulger.

As for his accent, that was interesting.  As the credits ran, my mom scoffed and said, “Benedict Cumberbatch didn’t even try, with the accent.”  But I think she’s wrong.  He sounds different from everyone else in the movie, and not what we think of as Southey…  but if you watch actual footage of Biily Bulger, that’s not inaccurate.  He *doesn’t* sound like other Southeys.

I’m not sure if he deliberately cleaned up his accent when he entered politics in order to sound more patrician, or if there’s some other factor.  In any case, I won’t quite say Cumberbatch *nailed* it, but it was pretty strong.  He definitely didn’t sound like a Brit muddling through.

He may actually have had an easier task compared to the other actors, because there’s a decent amount of footage of Billy Bulger speaking.  So he had more to go on.

Also he was pretty cute!  If you’re into the whole gingerbatch thing.  :)  Even with his cheeks stuffed like a chipmunk.

(Due warning: the movie is – as you would expect from the subject matter – extremely violent in some scenes.  I had to look away quite a few times.)

ETA: I almost forgot!  There’s a moment in the movie when Billy Bulger (Benedict) mentions that a woman was beaten and killed “over on Baker Street”.  I think I was the only person in the audience who giggled.
