Since the day they met, they had never been apart for so long.

Val saw it. He saw him wandering around like he was lost. Like he didn’t know what to do with himself without her. Val sat down next to him at Sway rehearsal, clapping him on the shoulder. “Bro, what’s wrong?” Val asked wih a laugh, hoping maybe Maks was just frustrated with choreography. It was several silent seconds before Maks responded. “What if she forgot about me?” Val joked with his brother about everything, but with this, with her, he couldn’t. He had never seen his brother like this. A little 5 foot 3 angel had turned Maks, the infamous bad boy of the ballroom, the ultimate playboy, into a vulnerable mess. “Impossible” was all Val could say before getting up. After a whole lifetime of knowing him better than he knew himself, they didn’t need words. He knew Maks wanted to be alone.

Charlie saw it. When they were sitting around in Japan, he saw that she didn’t have the same energy she’d had in those last few months. She wasn’t as excitable. He had always been able to make her laugh but despite his best attempts, all he could get was a chuckle. On the rink, of course, nobody could tell. Nothing could get to the Ice Queen when she was in the zone. But as they waited around before shows, he squeezed her hand and pulled her into a hug. After seventeen years, they didn’t need words. He felt her slight shoulders shake as she quietly cried in his arms.

As they flew home from Japan, her mind raced. What if when they weren’t dancing intimately every week there would be nothing there? What if they’d gotten caught up in the excitement? Latch came on shuffle and she immediately skipped it so the tears in her eyes wouldn’t fall down her cheeks.

They had set a time to meet at his apartment. As she rode in the cab, she looked out the window, allowing her mind to wander. She pictured what her life would be like, living here with him. The thought terrified and thrilled her at the same time.

When he got nervous, he cooked. He spent hours making his best meal. He had to do everything he could for her.

As she stepped out of the cab, she stood still for a while. She almost turned around and walked away, but she couldn’t bear to not see him.

He heard the doorbell ring. Hands shaking, he opened the door and saw her standing there. Her stomach in her throat, she managed to squeak out a “Hi.” He didn’t even think. To hell with keeping a secret from the paparazzi. He swooped her up into an embrace, kissing her cheek. He twirled her into his apartment, hearing the infectious giggle he had missed so dearly. He immediately pulled her into the goofy dance, the “wedding dance”, they did more often than anybody knew.

All of his worries flew away as he remembered how good he felt when she was in his arms. All she could think about in that moment was how alive he made her feel, more alive than anybody else ever did.

He buried his head in the hair around her shoulder and whispered in her ear the words that had become “their words” whenever they had been apart for even the shortest time.

“All is right in the world again.”
