Bringing sports and art together: Gautier Courquin

In other occasions, we’ve talked about some of the best photographers in the app. However, this time it’s all about video, the reason of Shutta’s existence.

At the age of 23, Gautier Courquin, winner of the 3, 2, 1… Action! Shutta Mission, is probably one of the most skilled film makers on Shutta. His artistic eye can be easily noticed in most of the skateboarding and snowboarding photos he shares, in which the composition, the colors and the light are just unbeatable. Join us throughout this interview to know more about him and his action video projects!

1. As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was a kid I always wanted to work with animals, but as I grew up I realized that studying wasn’t my favorite thing… So I never really knew what I wanted to do specifically until I was 19 or 20 years old.

2. How did you get into video production?

When I was a kid I got a camera for my birthday and started filming anything. I couldn’t edit because it was on a tape. Then when I was about 14 years old I got a digital camera. The quality was bad but I started using the editing software Windows Movie Maker on my laptop to edit quick films of my friends skating. We filmed each other and posted the videos on youtube and that’s how I started to want to produce content for the internet, just for fun.

3. How would you define your video shooting and editing style?

It’s a difficult question because I don’t really know what style my videos have… I edit many different things and try to be as creative as much as I can.

4. What video equipment do you usually use for your videos?

At the moment I have a Canon 600D with all kinds of lenses, a GoPro hero 4 with a GdomeGlobal case to go in the sea, I have a Manfrotto slider and tripod, a Laing P-04 stabilizer.

I pre ordered a Panasonic GH5 to try and go up a level in filming material and I think the next step will be a DJI Ronin M.

5. Right now, are you involved in any project?

Right now I’m finishing my cinema studies and will have my final internship at Almo Film, a french production company in which I have good times working with.

I’m also trying to get some collaborations with different brands to produce things on social medias and private individuals who are interested in videos I could make.

6. Any advice to someone who is just getting into video production?

You have to try and keep up with the level of everyone but if you really want to do it it’ll only be a pleasure to learn new things.

7. How did you discover Shutta App?

My best friend Mathis, who now lives in Vietnam during few months a year, told me « download Shutta App » without really telling me what it was so I got it on my phone and saw what it was. :)

8. Could you tell us in which kind of situations do you find Shutta most useful?

I don’t always take photos on my phones but film a lot, and when I want to screen shot it’s hard to get to the exact moment I want, so on Shutta App I have more space to be precise on which second I want my frame to freeze like a screenshot, and I don’t loose any quality so it’s cool. I also do it to try and win some stuff the app gives away with the missions. I won a polaroid action camera, really small and good quality by the way, thanks !!!

9. Besides from Shutta, on which other social media platforms can we find you?

I’m really active on Instagram through @gautiercourquin so I’d say it’s the main media I use, but besides Shutta, I also use Vimeo to post long videos and works I do, or I started a Facebook page to post pictures and a new YouTube channel for tutorials or product tests.

10. What professional goals have you set for the future?

I want to be a camera operator, editor and why not work on social media in any way.

The main idea is to film and edit the content I filmed. With one of my other best friends Julien we have some plans on starting a production company to be able to edit our own images for other people or productions and be able to live out of it. In that case we’d just have fun, film cool things and edit them.
