Armin’s Design

Taken from the SnK Character Guidebook 2017, page 37

Disclaimer: My Japanese isn’t great, so errors may be present in the translation. I am open to correction.
“I wanted him to look gentle and mild mannered, but I also gave him a button nose so he would have a defining feature. Characters in manga often have props to distinguish them, like a unique hat, because there are so many characters, but it’s difficult to notice his nose as a feature. I also made Armin physically smaller than Eren and Mikasa.
The name “Armin Arlert” sounds like “aluminium”, so it’s alliterative and easy to remember*.
In the TV anime, Armin’s parents made a balloon. I didn’t have time to show it in the manga, but I did draw a rough version of his parents. Clearly, Armin is similar to his father.”**

Side notes:
Similarities to Armin:
Mother- Hair, nose, eyebrows
Father- Eyes

*TN: aluminium in Japanese is アルミ (arumi) which is just one character off from  アルミン (Armin).
**TN: Sarcasm???

anonymous asked:

What's the visual novel that the quote is from?

The visual novel is called Burning Bright in the Forests of the Night.

It was first released as an extra with the first pressing of the 6th Japanese DVD/Bluray volumes on December 18th, 2013, along with other two visual novels: A Choice with no Regrets, and Wall Sina, Goodbye. It has been re-released on the recent Season 1 DVD/Bluray Boxsets.

The whole visual novel is basically Levi’s thoughts about Eren during the events of Season 1. We get to see his point of view during the most relevant moments Eren and Levi share.

It really is great because we get into Levi’s head and know what he thinks about Eren. Here’s a resume with the most important points:

Levi calls Eren a monster, but a monster “created so perfectly it inspires awe, and fear”.

When Levi realizes Eren has transformed to fight the female titan in the forest, and he might be in danger, Levi’s heart is described as “cold as ice”, and he “flies like a released arrow”.

Levi beating Eren in the trial is described as “an extreme, cunning performance. But a necessary one”. He also thinks how they’re forced to make hard decisions all the time, and beating Eren is his last resort. “Ahh, what a load of bullshit. But there’s no choice. A soldier’s profession is to wield violence”. I personally love this part because it really proves that Levi did not want to hurt Eren, and was just doing it because he had no other choice.

Levi knows about Eren’s past, about his training time, and even about his childhood. It is said that “violence and any other form of pain will never break the boy’s spirit”. Not even getting a beating is going to destroy him, on the contrary, it will make him stronger.

The most important part from the whole visual novel is probably this one:

Humanity’s Strongest understands Eren Jaeger very well.
Eren Jaeger is indeed feared as a monster.
Eren Jaeger is undoubtedly a monster.
But all these people have gotten it wrong from the start.
Eren Jaeger is not a monster because he has the power to shift into a titan

When Levi calls Eren a monster, he isn’t talking about his shifting power. He is talking about his strenght and will. He is a monster because he is capable of enduring so much and still keep fighting. When Levi calls Eren a monster, it’s not something with bad connotations, it’s actually almost a compliment, as he speaks of him with admiration.

Eren is a monster “not because of the titan power, but because his soul itself is a monster”. And nothing can’t control this monster, “not even love” (゚ω゚;).

Levi wants to protect Eren, and calls him a “monster with perfect, fearsome beauty”. ( I assume this is the quote you saw in the first place).

When Levi rescues Eren, he yells his name. He “looks at the boy he’s holding" and wonders if he put too much weight on his shoulders or confused him by making him decide.

The visual novel ends with the poem The Tyger by William Blake, which gives name to the visual novel.

You can watch the visual novel here or here.

It was translated to english by sunset-tower, you can find the translation here. Any quotes used on this post belong to that translation.

I personally recommend this visual novel, it’s short but I think it’s very important to understand Eren and Levi’s relationship a bit better.

Summary of the chapter

Source - u/et_exspecto

  • Annie secretly follows Kenny to get more information about the King, but gets caught.
  • Reiner & co are in a lull, so Reiner suggests destroying wall Rose. The plan is to escape from the training corps as the chaos ensues and go to the capital to directly attack the King.
  • Annie points out that the plan would kill most of Reiner and Bertolt’s “friends”. She is disgusted with Reiner who says that gaining trust of the trainees is part of the show.
  • In Eren who struggled with his gear Reiner sees himself five years ago and encourages Eren that he will be able to eliminate all titans one day.
  • Back to the current timeline, Reiner is struggling from a sort of PTSD from all these memories and attempts to commit suicide.
  • But he hears Falco who despairs from not being able to gain the Armored at this rate. Reiner realizes there is some job for him to do.

SNK Character Song Series 06: Levi (Image song & monologue translations)

Heeeyyy, Tumblr! Long time, no see :’) Did y'all enjoy SNK Season 2?

Levi and Erwin’s image song CDs were just released and I enjoyed listening to them a lot! ♡ So, I decided to pop back in for a bit and take on a new translation endeavor, something I haven’t really done in a while.

First up, this post is Levi’s image song and monologue! For the song, I included the original Japanese as well as romaji for karaoke purposes, if you’re so inclined ;) I also made a transcript of the monologue in the original Japanese, which you can read here (feel free to use it to translate into other languages.)

This should be obvious but keep in mind these are spoilers for the song & monologue, in case you wanted to experience them for yourself first. I definitely encourage supporting the official release & ordering the CDs if you haven’t already ♡

I’m also nearly finished with my translation of Erwin’s song and monologue as well, I’ll update this post with a link once it’s done ♡ ETA: Here is the translation of Erwin’s song and monologue!

“Dark Side Of The Moon” (Vocals by Hiroshi Kamiya)

Side note: the melody for Levi’s song is based on the previously released SNK single, Reluctant Heroes.

English Translation

This kind of world now
Even if we try shaking it upside down
There isn’t one thing that comes out
Which is certain, is there?

Outside the walls, it is hell
Inside, it is brimming with deceit
What’s more, we have to swallow it down
We can only fulfill our duty

Will we lose control of emotion and be consumed by a god of death?
Or will we try to use our dim-witted heads?

The dark side of the moon, untouched by light
For the sake of pushing forward
We have to be faster and at times
Be heartless without hesitation
It’s not a mistake if it’s what you want to do, so do it
There are no right answers here
Just being without regrets
Is my own decision

If were to I survive here
Rather than education with words
Isn’t persuasion by memories of pain
An essential lesson?

To avert sacrifice as well as danger
Things like results
Cannot be obtained
Steel yourself for it

The dark side of the moon is concealed
For the sake of someday being revealed
Do not get agitated, do not scream
Be certain of the circumstances
Without results, there are no right answers
Therefore only in the end
Just being without regrets
Is my way of living

Brave soldiers who died noble deaths² before us
The hopes they left behind give us power
Without fail, one of these days
We will demolish the obstructive walls as well
For the sake of freedom, we devote this life

Translation notes:

¹ It appears that Levi’s gruff style of speaking is present even in the lyrics of his song. The standard form of the verb here would be detekiyashinai (出てきやしない).
² The verb in the original Japanese, chiru/散る (or in this case, the past tense form chitta/散った) in the literal sense means “to fall” (in the context of leaves or blossoms from a tree). However, it also has the figurative meaning of “to die a noble death”. Even though we also say “fallen soldiers” in English, I worried that translating the lyric as, “fallen before us” or “fallen behind us” could both be misinterpreted, I decided to go with the more figurative meaning;;

Levi Monologue English Translation

Seriously now, I’ve had enough of this. This world is perpetual shit, and humanity is still toothless prey.

Those ugly titans are always going to take a bite out of us, and so we die a meaningless death.

Humanity is powerless.

When we won against the titans for the first time, the time when we sealed the wall in Trost district with a boulder, we could do it because of Eren’s power– a titan’s power.

The weak ones die quickly. How much power they use up doesn’t matter.

Eventually all of humanity, every single person will end up in the stinking maw of a titan, and while we experience the worst feeling there is, perhaps our miserable lives will end.

I realized it a few years ago. The stench of the gutters fills the inside of these walls. It’s been like this for over 100 years. It’s the way things are now.

Because I’ve had to breathe in this foul air ever since I was born, because I had no choice but to live crawling around in piles of trash, I thought that it was normal.

But when I went outside the walls for the first time, I realized how much I didn’t know about anything. It hit home for me, how much I had hated it.

The world outside the walls was like hell with titans wandering around, but the air I breathed there was completely different from the one inside the walls.

I realized, out there is what freedom is.

Freedom is something that absolutely cannot be obtained within the walls.

So I made a choice. I will continue to kill all of the titans.

If you want to confront the titans, information is never enough. So in order to survive, I learned how to live.

Quick action and callous decisions by assuming the worst is a necessary endeavor.

A moment’s hesitation, surrendering yourself to emotions, and you will be nothing but Titan bait.

If you don’t want to die, you have to always continue to keep this in mind.

And small choices will accumulate.

That is the way of living I have learned.

Risking no danger, making no sacrifices– there is no such easy discussion.

Even if there was, it’s all make-believe.

So far, I have lost numerous subordinates.

Whether my choice was correct at those times, I do not know. It’s always been like that.

Even if I believe in my own power, even if I believe in my comrades whom I fully trust, none of us will know the outcome.

Afterward, all that’s left is reality.

In that case, What can I do except make a desperate effort?

What can I do except doggedly press on?

If I have time to think about the bygone past, like if I were to have made a different choice back then, I will kill as many titans as possible within my power.

In that time, in that moment, a sudden, ridiculously strong power boils up from inside my body, and then I know what to do.

When that moment comes, I can no longer go back to my old self.

With these blood-stained hands, I accept my new self, I steel myself, and I only do what I must.

Was I correct? Or did I make a mistake? That’s the sort of thing no one knows, so it’s not worth worrying about.

All you can do is keep your mouth shut and make a choice without regrets.

Not understanding things about this world is true for everyone.

So I choose the guy whom I want to put my faith in.

Erwin is like that, too. No one knows what he is really thinking deep down.

But I trust his judgement.

He may be inviting the worst outcome, but he’s not afraid of that, he is able to choose something. That’s the kind of guy he is.

That’s why I chose to follow him. And I chose to fight.

In order to fight against this shit world, with this hand I’ll grab hold of the freedom of going beyond the walls for the first time.

I have chosen for myself.

Even if I am led into hell, I have no regrets.

Not one bit.

Isayama’s Author’s Note from the end of this chapter:

While I’m concerned about the readers opinion on the Marley Arc, it is heading to its end. I was initially influenced by the movie “The Mist”, but now I’ve have been influenced by “Guardian of the Galaxy” and “In one corner of this world”. Like “Himeanole” I don’t see Justice as something connected to Evil, yet the sensation of devilish homicide can overlap with a victim’s emotions. Please look forward to the end of Attack on Titan as it has been decided.

Mikasa Ackerman - No matter where you are

Here is my translation of Mikasa’s character song “No matter where you are”, sung by Ishikawa Yui. I have tried my best to display Mikasa’s true emotions and feelings, if you have any corrections then please feel free to message me! I wanted to fit the message of the song and convey her feelings, so this may not be a complete accurate jpn > eng translation. However, I hope you still enjoy and support Ishikawa!

When I woke up again,
At that moment… I found you,
The nightmare of that day,
You rescued me from it… gave me warmth

I have been chasing,
Right behind his back
Like I’m praying for it
Don’t ever look back,
Why are you leaving in such a hurry?

Please don’t go
Even though I’m always beside your side,
I still cannot overcome my fear
Please, don’t disappear, from me
You are my home to return to
No matter where you are

In a world like this,
The reason I’m still alive… is because of the people I want to protect
It’s only this reason I choose to stay alive

A dazzling light,
A light that came into the darkness
When I was covered with wounds,
At that time… it gave me encouragement

Please don’t go
Don’t leave me alone again
It’s much colder this time

Please don’t go,
For me.
You are my home to return to,
No matter where you are.

Disclaimer: My Japanese isn’t great and this may have mistakes
Mikasa and Armin are trying to get Eren to watch things with them (Armin wants Eren to watch 21 Jump Street and Mikasa is pushing Twilight lol). Eren gets creeped out and runs away into an alley, where Squad Levi are waiting for them. EMA immediately assume they’re selling drugs (the ダメ。ゼッタイ in the corner is commonly seen on anti-drug posters in Japan) but it’s just a new kind of cleaning product. EMA are scared, yell that they didn’t see anything, and run away. Squad Levi argue about their marketing strategy and Levi says he remembers Eren’s name and face.

anonymous asked:

Is it true that Isayama said that Eren must follow Levi's shadow in order to grow/develop? In an interview?

Hello anon! Yup, this is true.

It happened on an interview about Levi, in the August 2014 FRaU magazine. I’m sure you guys have seen this cover around many times!:

This is the same magazine that gave us a lot of important info about Levi (he has insomnia and only sleeps 2-3 hours on his chair, he has good resistance to alcohol and doesn’t get drunk, he fears mold, he takes 3 minute showers, etc.) and about his relationship with other characters (this is the interview where he said Eren is the best at cleaning, too!). Honestly that magazine was so good, it even had character horoscopes, haha.

I am quoting you the translation for the part you asked for:

Isayama: I have also sensed Levi’s appeal, and he is a character that makes me happy whenever I get the chance to draw him. He truly plays a role that helps the main character(s) preserve stability. If Eren has to march forward in pursuit of Levi’s shadow…the entire series could also progress in a similar manner.

(Eren can become shaky whenever he is angry/emotional, but Levi wouldn’t budge in the least). Levi probably can’t express himself like this any longer… Convulsing means that your anger has reached some type of limit, but Levi has probably already evolved past that stage.
Levi is a character who existed since I was conceptualizing everything. His personality was settled upon way back then.

The source of this translation is this post by fuku-shuu. Since Isayama was a bit vague, she also clarified on this post what the meaning of his words could be:

1. How I’m interpreting this part from the Chinese is that Eren needs to continue chasing Levi’s shadow in order for the series (And himself) to evolve.

2. Yes, it’s definitely possible that Levi also used to have such emotions/react in such a way - but the nuance here is not that he simply “grew out of it” but has become rather desensitized. It’s meant to incite sympathy towards him, as far as I can tell from the language used.

I love this because it shows how important Eren and Levi’s relationship is for the story. I know that many times, when we get a lot of Eren and Levi official art, merchandise, etc., when they’re featured side by side in magazines, advertisements, and all that stuff, our first reaction is to think: “well this is because ereri is popular and they’re thinking on profit”.

And yes, that might be correct, but it’s not the only reason. Their relationship is essential for the story. There’s always been paralels between them in the manga, which have been analyzed and discussed again and again, but this is great because this info is coming from Isayama himself, he’s saying it with his own words, and he’s showing us a little bit of his view on them.

He already knew when he was creating the concept of the story, that Levi was going to exist and was going to be a huge influence on the protagonist. And for the ones who read the manga, we have seen how Eren has evolved a lot already. I am really eager to see him after the timeskip!

I know many of you are sad and dissapointed because the lack of interaction between Eren and Levi lately. But Isayama’s story is huge, and has been expanded even more in the latest chapters. On top of that, this is a monthly manga, so things move really slow. But this here, is a real confirmation that Eren and Levi are very important to each other and to the whole story. This honestly makes me really happy and gives me hope that there still will be meaningful moments between them in the future.

Character Profile: Armin Arlert

“Why is it that when I think of the outside world, I feel courage well up inside of me?”

Armin Arlert:

Birthday- November 3

Height: 163cm

Weight: 55kg

Affiliation: Survey Corps - New Squad Levi

Armin supports Eren and his friends with his strength of will and mind.

Since childhood, Armin’s had a strong will that drew the attention of bullies. Eren and Mikasa would have to save him. This would change after becoming soldiers, staring with the fight against the Female Titan. Using intellect as a weapon, he has saved Eren and his comrades from danger multiple times.

He dreams to see beyond the walls with Eren.

Because of his grandfather’s book, Armin’s dream is to see the world beyond the walls. That world is a symbol of freedom for Armin, and the Titans are the obstacle to that freedom. This is his driving force to defeat the Titans: frozen earth, the snowfields of sand and the salty water that meets the horizon. He believes that the day they will see such things will come.

He received the Power of the Titans at the Battle of Shiganshina

Bertholdt transformed into the Colossal Titan at the Battle of Shiganshina and fought against Armin. In order to achieve victory, Armin sacrificed himself and was grievously injured. Armin received the Titan serum injection and became a Pure Titan, ate Bertholdt (receiving the power of the Colossal Titan) and became a human again. What effect will having eaten a former companion have on Armin in the future..?

Levihan week Day 1: Celebration/ first;last

My interpretation: Levi and Hanji are celebrating New Years.

- I thought it would be good if my first translation for levihan week was a special one. So here is my first full-color translation!

The Titans

Founding Titan and history information translated by Reddit user u/OrganicDinosaur
(Translation can be found here)
The remainder of this post translated by me

The Attack Titan

Height: 15m
Holders: Eren Kruger- Grisha Yeager- Eren Yeager

The power of the Attack Titan has been transferred from the Owl, to Grisha and then Eren.
Through internal plans, 7 of Eldia’s 9 Titans were in the hands of Marley. One Titan that Marley was unable to capture in any age was the one that fought for freedom, the Attack Titan. Eren Kruger, who had infiltrated the Marley security force, was in posession of it. He passed it to Grisha Yeager, who then passed it to Eren Yeager.

The Colossal Titan

Height: 60m
Holders: Bertholdt Hoover- Armin Arlert

The overwhelming destructive power of the Colossal Titan
With a height of 60m, the Colossal Titan is overwhelmingly massive, but moves slowly because of its size but makes up for it with great power and was strong enough to destroy the gate at Shiganshina with a single powerful kick. Like all Titans, it explodes on transformation and can emit large amount of steam by burning its muscle mass. It caused massive casualties to the Survey Corps.

The Armoured Titan

Height: 15m
Holders: Reiner Braun

Marley’s Warrior that defends with its body armour
This Titan is known as the Armoured Titan because it can harden its skin, like armour. When Marley’s enemies attack, it acts as a shield. It’s impossible to damage, even with humanities 3DMG. To damage it in the same way as another titan, the Thunder Spears used by the Survey Corps need to be used at precise points.

The Female Titan

Height: 14m
Holders: Annie Leonhart

Skilled at fighting and using the hardening ability
This Titan has excellent versatility due to its mobility and versatility, and can harden in any specific area. Paired with Annie’s fighting technique, it is capable of great destruction. In addition, it has the ability to attract Pure Titans by screaming, though the range of the scream is limited.

The Jaw Titan

Height: 5m
Holders: Marcel- Ymir- Galliard

The Titan Ymir took from Marley
Due to its small size, this Titan moves quickly and has fast reflexes. With strong claws and a powerful jaw, this Titan is best at assault. Ymir received the Jaw Titan after eating Marcel. After being returned to Marley, Galliard inherited it.

The Cart Titan

Height: 4m
Holders: Pieck

A Titan on all fours that carries heavy artillery
With its incredible endurance, this Titan is suited to long-term assignments. It can be used in various ways depending on the assignment, and plays an important role in terms of expanding military plans. The Cart Titan participated in the Battle of Shiganshina and rescued Zeke, who had fallen into danger after his fight with Levi.

The Beast Titan

Height: 17m
Holders: Zeke

A Titan with a strong throwing arm and the ability to control Titans with its scream.
This Titan has a throwing technique that involves crushing rocks and throwing them like a pitch, dealing massive damage from a distance. Those who have been injected with Zeke’s spinal fluid and hear Zeke’s scream turn into Pure Titans that will obey his orders, even on moonlit nights. It was because of this ability that Utguard Castle was attacked by the Titans at night.

English Translation

I do not offer false hopes
By dangling dreams in front
It is nothing but bleak, but that is the way things are

Sometimes the best policy is
To sacrifice precious lives
Defending until the end the path forward
It is the theory of the battlefield

Into the midst of this endless crisis
I will continue to guide the soldiers
Even if I have to abandon everything
I will hold onto the hope of mankind

I have stared myself sick gazing upon
Humanity’s inferiority
Nevertheless we have not yet perished

For the weak ones who have not paid with sacrifice
What sort of chances of winning are there?
The opponents we must face
Have been a menace for 100 years

Into the midst of this endless crisis
I will dive over and over again
To search for fragments of the truth
That is simply the hope of mankind

Into the midst of this endless crisis
I will continue to lead the soldiers
I will cling to my unwavering faith
Until my days come to an end

It is cruel how the victims have fallen
If I were to atone for these volunteers
One life is not enough, but
Perhaps it would after I have fallen into hell
There is a limit to the decisions I make now but
I believe we can build a tomorrow

There’s no end to the things I’ve thrown away
Even though the things I’ve gotten in return were few
The ability to challenge is not down to zero
There is still a possibility

Monologue English Translation

My father was a teacher. The course of my life was set in the classroom one day where my father was giving a history lesson.

Having doubts about the story of how humanity had been driven into these walls, I asked my father a naive question.

At the time, my father stayed silent, but after we returned home, he answered my question.

There were a great number of inconsistencies in the history book distributed by the monarchy.

Moreover, he had a theory that they were hiding an astounding truth.

I spread my father’s theory around to the neighborhood children.

There was no ill intention, it was an innocent act.

However, on the day in which those details were investigated by Military Police, my father died in an accident in a faraway town he had left for.

Of course, it was only ostensibly an accident. My father was killed at the hands of someone who disapproved of his theory.

Inside the walls, there are a portion of humans who indulge in a privileged life– their desires, as well as a foolish son tempted by innocent questions killed my father.

And then my father’s theory became my truth. Proving my father’s theory became my life’s mission.

Humans become titans, and titans become the walls.

In this world full of harsh paths, answering the question I put forth on that day is the meaning of my life, the reason why I was born.

It is for that reason that I came to lead the Survey Corps, giving commands to numerous subordinates: “Give up your life.”

Almost all humans who join the Survey Corps will die.

On their first expedition outside the walls, the probability that new recruits will become food for the titans is roughly 50 percent.

1 in 2 people will lose their life.

Just in the last 4 years, the Survey Corps lost the majority of its soldiers, and with the fall of Wall Maria, all of the results we had gained crumbled in an instant.

There is no guarantee that Survey Corps soldiers who dedicate their hearts for the sake of humanity will live tomorrow. The current condition is bleak.

However much we try to discuss our hopes and dreams, all of them will be easily crushed.

No matter how much we champion some great cause or become a sacrifice for someone else’s sake, the pay off is almost nothing.

And yet I have been ordering many soldiers to die.

I have been using gamble-like military strategies in order to fight against this cruel world.

A comrade who formerly aspired to join the Survey Corps with me fell in love with a girl from the bar we frequented, and he chose to protect her.

I too thought I could perhaps walk along that same kind of path.

But I chose the path of fighting titans over a girl I loved.

Even a person who chose a peaceful life and could spend their life happily will eventually die.

Hope? Or despair? When this small world is about to change, I am the only one who will choose my own path.

I am the only one who will choose the path I believe in.

Who is the enemy of this world?

The key that will save humanity from this despair is none other than humanity’s determination.

This firm determination is, above all, mankind’s hope.

Therefore, I have no choice but to go see the answers I want to know.

Even though I have lost my arm as well as many of my subordinates while carrying the wings of freedom on my back¹, I must continue to advance beyond the walls by fighting against this cruel world.

If we can manage to reach the basement of Eren Yeager’s home, surely we will be able to seize the key to freeing ourselves from control by titans which has lasted for 100 years.

The answer to the question I brought forth on that day is at a place right before my eyes, a place I can reach my hand toward and grab.

Everything is for the sake of my dream– my very own dream. For that purpose I have guided many soldiers, and have ordered them to die.

As well as every other soldier who has tragically fallen.

My one life is not enough, but eventually I will make up for it. After I have fallen into hell, certainly I will have the privilege to atone.

Certainly, without fail. But now is not the time.

No matter what it takes, I have to be present to witness the moment that the truth about this world becomes clear.

Even if I have to abandon everything.

My conviction is unwavering.

Translation note:

¹ Here the phrase 自由の翼を背負い/jiyū no tsubasa wo seoi (“carrying the wings of freedom on my back”) has a connotation of it being a heavy burden to bear. It looks similar to another phrase in Japanese, 十字架を背負う/jyūjika wo seō, which means “to have a cross to bear” or more figuratively, “to carry a heavy burden”.
