2015 seems to be the year of formal events for me and quite frankly that scares me. They are the several milestones somehow have a conflicting effect on me to which makes me question many aspects of the future. Whether is be personal or relationship based, I when I think of formal event they have this intangible ability to send shivers down my spine. I suppose if I had to pin-point a specific reason it’ll probably be because it signifies a period of time that has past, a period of time that may only be recovered as a memory & can never be experienced again #WayTooStartThingsOnAPositiveNote
Anywho, my point being that on milestone occasions you want to look nothing short of your best. And this post will hopefully, give you several tips on how to plan your look for that milestone occasion.
For this installation of the Formal Edit, I’m a subtle bronze with copper undertones girl by heart so this first look will my take on a subtle bronzey smokey eye.
1ST: KNOWING THE EVENT THEME + COORDINATING OUTFIT WITH THE THEME
For some getting to attend a wedding/ prom/ formal event can be one of the most time consuming + confusing + chaotic period, especially when ones made to match the theme of the event. Having to sort between ‘formal’, ‘semi-formal’, ‘cocktail’ & ‘casual’, personally, is one of the hardest parts of planning your look. Well how I sorted out that mess of a situation is to think “WWLCD #WhatWouldLaurenConradDo Click here for more info on dressing for an event.
After settling you outfit, you now have to pair the “look” with a matching or complimenting makeup look. Essentially, in this series I’ll be doing 3 formal looks to suit various dress codes as well as event timing.
2ND: PICKING A NEUTRAL EYE BASE + EYE COLOUR
TOP TO BOTTOM: MAC PAINTERLY PAINT POT / MAKE UP GEEK EYE SHADOW IN FRAPPE & PEACHES N CREAM
For this look I started with the MAC Painterly Paint Pot & applied that all over the lid to neutralize any redness or veins as well as to allow any shadows that are applied on top to appear more vibrant. The pain pots from MAC is truly top notch in being both a eye primer and a cream eye shadow. It definitely worth investing in.
Next apply a soft peach with a hint of brown shade (Make Up Geek Eye Shadow in Peach N Cream) into the crease area up till just slightly below the brow bone. For Asian lids, it’s good to take a light crease shade slightly higher up to fake the illusion of a deeper set crease. Using Mac 217 brush to dust that in a wind-screen wiper motion in the crease. Make sure to blend till there are no visible harsh edges. Now using the same brush in the same crease to brow bone area of the crease take the a soft brown shade (Make Up Geek Eye Shadow in Frappe) into the the same area to deepen the crease as well as letting the peach shades peak through.
3RD: ADD DIMENSION & SPARKLE TO THE EYE LID
TOP TO BOTTOM: MAKEUP GEEK PIGMENT BIRTHDAY WISH / AFTERGLOW
Next, using a flat shading brush (Real Technique Eye Shading Brush) take a light neutral shimmer loose pigment to place on the whole lid ( upper lash line are to the crease) of the eye. Pack on the pigments with patting motions & not sweeping motions. Then on the outer half of the lid, using the same brush, pack on a deeper coppery bronzey shimmer loose pigment on the outer half of the lid to give of a gradient transitioning effect. Like wise pack the pigments with a patting motion. Lastly using a clean brush blend the two shades together in sweeping motions to ensure that there are no harsh edges.
Adding a slightly lighter pigments on the inner half of the lids allows for a more wide eye look, while having the slightly darker pigment in the same colour family aids in adding that smokey dimension that is perfect for a formal event.
At this stage, feel free to go back in with the two eye shadows from earlier to further define the crease. Cause in apply the layer above the initial layer might have cause a lose of colour.
4TH: DEFINE THE EYE CREASE FOR A SMOKEY LOOK

Now using a gorgeous rich copper bronzey shimmer eye shadow, using a pencil brush (innisfree eye pencil brush), to define the actual crease line of the lid in an outer V. this aids in bringing a define depth as well as to enhance the coppery / reddish tones of the look.
5TH: DEFINE THE UPPER LASH LINE
IN PICTURE: RIMMEL SCANDAL EYES WATERPROOD KOHL KAJAL IN BLACK
Now using a flat eye liner brush (MAC 212 Brush), take some of the product onto the brush & pack the gel as close as possible to the upper lash line. At the end slightly elongate wing at the ends. At this stage you may feel free to do your eyeliner however you usually do it. Personally, I find it overwhelming if the liner is too starking or too thick, it then takes away from the smokey effect going on. I like to use my last finger to smudge out the eye liner just so that it prevents the product from shifting on the eye lid as well as prevents transfers to the upper lid.
If you are a pro at lining your eyes you may want to take this product into the upper water line of your eye so that your lashes appear thicker. But personally, I can’t touch my waterline without tearing up like a crazy person. That is why I like to pack the eye liner as close to my upper lash line.
6TH: ENHANCE THE LOWER LASH LINE
TOP TO BOTTOM: MAKEUP GEEK EYE SHADOW IN SHIMMA SHIMMA / MILANI BELLA EYE GEL POWDER IN BELLA BRONZE
Moving on to the lower lash line, with most going out looks you taking the product under you eye helps to frame the eye shape & give it more definition. I tend to think that a smokey eye on Asian lids shrink the appearance of the Asian eye unless you have big eyes then #YouDoYou So what I like to do is to highlight the inner corner of my eyes up till about ½ my lower lash line with a light shimmery eye shadow (Make Up Geek Eye Shadow in Shimma Shimma) using a pencil eye shadow brush (Innisfree Pencil Brush). Then using the deep coppery eye shadow from earlier (Milani Bella Eye Gel Powder in Bella Bronze) with the same brush, to line the outer half of the lash line. this helps to bring definition to the outer lid to give a elongated appearance to the eye as well as a wide eye appearance to the inner corners. Try to keep the product as closer to the lower lash line.
Taking a fluffy blending eye brush (MAC 217), blend all the edges of the shades both the lower lash line & The lid above. Blending is key if you want to achieve a subtle smokey eye.
7TH: ENHANCE THE EYE LASHES FOR A WIDE EYE + SULTRY LOOK
IN PICTURE: URBAN DECAY CANNONBALL MASCARA
I like to use a waterproof mascara formula (Urban Decay Cannonball Mascara) cause I think it holds the eye lash curls for a longer period of time. Apply 2-3 coats of the product to achieve fuller & longer looking lashes. This helps to enhance the eye shape of the eye to give the look a visible lift.
8TH: PICK A LIP COLOUR TO SUIT YOUR EYE THEME
IN PICTURE: MAC SOAR LIP PENCIL / MAC AMOROUS LIPSTICK / TANYA BURR LIP GLOSS IN BERRY PICKING (NOT IN PICTURE)
For my lips, I chose to compliment the hues in my eyes by playing up the reddish neutral tones in the shadows. I lined my lips with a liner that is one shade darker than my lip colour (MAC Lip Pencil in Soar). Then using a lipstick with a mauvey pinkish brown undertone (MAC Lipstick in Amorous). Lastly, to make your lips appear fuller & juicy add a touch of clear gloss or gloss of the same lip colour you’ve applied (Tanya Burr Lip Gloss in Berry Picking.)
YEZ SO DAZ ALL! DO HOPE THIS LOOK HELPS IF YOU ARE HAVE HAD A SUDDEN EVENT THAT HAS SPRUNG ON YOU WITHOUT WARNING.
