Frank Gehry has always been one of my favorite architects—for when it comes to the understanding of forms, he is second to none.

A few years back I saw a documentary about him, and I was really touched by it. Adidas has a tag line which says “impossible is nothing,” and I think that it describes the ethics of Gehry very well. Most of his designs are a structural engineering nightmare, but he has principles and stick with what he desires.

I also like his process—the sculpting, the expression, the iterations.

A few years back while I was visiting my sister in Boston, I happened upon the Stata Center at MIT. And it is incredible to experience it in person—to feel the space. I have never been to Bilbao, but since that day it has been on my todo list. Any day now.

Photographed in 2009 at Stata Center, MIT, Boston, USA with the Canon EOS 10D + Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM. Exposure: 24mm, f/8, 1/180 sec, ISO 100.

國民革命忠烈祠儀隊交接儀式 Changing of the Guards at the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine #tw

The National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine (國民革命忠烈祠) is considered a must-see attraction for visitors to Taiwan. It was built to honor the 390,000 Chinese soldiers killed during the Xinhai Revolution, Northern Expedition, Second Sino-Japanese War, Chinese Civil War, and the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises.

The ceremonial changing of the guards, seen here, occurs every hour. The military officers stand still until they are replaced in the next hour.

Photographed with the Canon EOS 6D + Canon EF 17-40 f/L USM. Processed in Lightroom 5.

The National Concert Hall (國家音樂廳) is a performing arts venue at Liberty Square in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan. The buildings, though modern in function and purpose, recall traditional elements of Chinese palace architecture. The building and its twin, the National Theater (國家戲劇院) located directly across, were completed in 1987.

I have done multi-strobes in the studio before [1], but mostly moving my hands as I can see the results in my head. But recently I saw a hyperrealist painting by 李永斌 Li Yongbin seen recently at Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 [1], which depicts an artist’s face in multiple stage. I thought that it was interesting, so I created a series of self-portraits by moving my head around. Here is one such result.

Interestingly, the imperfect black canvas actually created a somewhat painterly effect which I liked — sometimes imperfection has its purpose, I guess?

Manual exposed at ISO 400, 104mm, f/7.1, 1.0 sec — when multi is at 1Hz you are effectively seeing 10 exposures of me in a single capture.

Wufenpu (五分埔) is the largest clothing market in Taipei, best known for its wholesale pricing. It is most suitable for ladies who enjoy bargain shopping. I had no interest in that, but instead gravitated to the little food vendors seen here selling knock-off versions of Taiwanese specialties, such as the fried chicken steak in the front. In the background, another Buddhist temple appears rather unexpectedly in the midst of all the chaos.

SML in Motion http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/9366953851/ multi-exposure via Photoshop:

A friend on Facebook challenged me to do multiple exposure via Photoshop, and this is the result.

If your flash does not allow you to do multi strobe (which I believe is a function only available on Canon 580EX, 580EX II and 600EX) [2, 3]. You can do it inside Photoshop by stacking the layers together. This takes less guess work.

Multistrobe via the Flash is done during the capture, and basically requires the subject to move to the exact position that you photograph when the flash is firing. Of course, the unknown is what makes it fun, but for more predictable results, Photoshop is obviously your friend.

That said, since I do not have a model and must photograph myself, what I get is somewhat difficult to predict also. There is a certain charm when you are able to achieve it inside the camera—which is more “analog” than Photoshop.

2. Although the Canon 430EX and below will not do multi-strobe natively, you can use them as slaves and multi-strobes will fire using 580EX as a master.
3. I am sure that Nikon can do that also but I don’t know what other camps can do. Please don’t ask me.

An old man crouches on the floor and fiddles with his phone next to his bike. He wears sneakers with the word “Fashion” painted over them.

Crouching this way while hanging out appears to be the norm for the mainland Chinese people. I don’t know how they do it. When I try the same pose, my feet are never able to lie flat, and my back hurts like hell. Everywhere I go, I see people sitting like this when they hang out. Is it just me? Can you do that?!

Let me reiterate: you don’t need no expensive cameras to do photography. In fact, using cheap point+shoots for photography is a testimony to true skills. If you use a 5D3 and your photos look like crap, you should question if you are worthy of the camera. It is very easy to use SLRs to get the shot you want, because there is virtually no lag when you hit the shutter. Try doing sports photography with a point and shoot. Some people can do it. Some cannot. And yet a few weeks ago I met yet another guy in a restaurant randomly asking me what the +/- dials are for on his M9. Uh maybe you should use your iPhone if you have no idea wtf you are doing, ugh.

Drying fish is an age-old Chinese tradition. Seafoods are usually consumed fresh in Chinese cuisine. When you cannot finish them all, then you dry them under direct sunlight and they become some other form of delicacy.

This was photographed in Lau Fau Shan (流浮山), a fishing village in Hong Kong with the 7D + 100-400. Fishermen were seen drying the fish directly under the sun on the street near the market. The long lens renders a beautiful bokeh and allows the image to have an almost abstract quality.

To kick off the long hiatus of my photography feed, I present a new capture for my 寧 Serenity series. This was taken in January 2014, when clouds were seen clustering and covering the entire sky. I have rarely seen this formation on the surface — usually this is seen only when I fly at an airplane, which is why I decided to take an image of it.

Rasim Aksan (Turkey): Paradox, 2011 (Acrylic airbrush on canvas) http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/9040288374/ @ Galerist:

The hyperrealist / surrealist (hyper surrealist?) painting “Paradox” by Turkish artist Rasim Aksan is a collage of facial features from different people.

In the age of Photoshop I often wonder if I would like these as much if they are done on the computer instead of by hand. If done on the computer I would have expected better workmanship. When I spoke to many hyperrealist painters in the past they too told me that they work from photographs instead of painting from memories. So what you are looking is a very skilled human producer of a Photoshop rendering, perhaps?

The painting peeked my interest enough to take a photograph but in regarded to whether I would consider purchasing it for my collection my feeling is a bit lukewarm. It might also simply not be my “thing,” but it is interesting nevertheless.

I kept on seeing this boat from my apartment up above peering down and now I have spotted the same boat at eye level.

The word 海鮮 in Chinese means seafood, but it is in fact made up with two characters: 海 is sea and 鮮 is fresh. Thus you can see that seafood according to the Chinese must be eaten fresh. This is why when you go to Chinese restaurants you will see a lot of fish tanks. Simply put, dead seafood is nasty.

I have no idea what is in its nets but those look like squids to me. Oh yummy!

The one thing I noticed from photographing this game is that there really aren’t many captures which contain the ball and the guy. As soon as something of interest is happening, the ball is already fast gone. I feel that it is somewhat important to actually see the ball in the frame so I picked to process this.

This is Luca Marinelli (HKF Number 16). He is the defender for the team and is originally from Varese, Italy [1]. I photograph this across the width of a standard soccer pitch, so this lens is definitely a keeper for sports photography. I would have preferred to get the frame rate of the 7D but this was at night and only the 6D had the usable 12800 ISO, which this is shot at. No Noise Reduction is applied. Shot for personal stock use. Unlike regular photography, the goal (pun intended) is to be simple enough to allow other elements to shine. So it should not contain a lot of distracting details. For this shot the background is a already a bit distracting, but it is left in so when I do use it I can figure out whether to crop them out or not.
