A note to Smith College students
As much as I love Smithies and their love of protest, I don’t think that protesting, Christine Lagarde, the first woman to serve as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, as the 2014 Commencement Speaker is a productive use of their time.

There are so many other issues in the world to protest other than who is chosen to be your commencement speaker. It’s 2 hours of your life. Use your critical thinking caps, take what you can, graduate, and go out there and be the change you want to see. Chanting and holding signs in front of the President’s house is, in my view, a waste of the precious moments Smith provides.

Take advantage of the fact that one of the most powerful women in the world is coming to speak to you. You want to speak truth to power? Do your homework, say hello, and meet her with dignity. Don’t stand around with fists in the air as if rescinding her invitation is going to change the status quo.
