Top 5 Picks (Stylists) - Tuomas Laitinen

Tuomas Laitinen is a designer, teacher, editor, and stylist, Laitinen has fostered the burgeoning fashion scene in Helsinki through his work at SSAW, the biannual fashion journal he cofounded. This is what he has to say about SSAW:

What really stands out from this manifesto are these words: raw, paired down, counter reaction, overtly polished. Especially COUNTER REACTION is an idea that could easily linked to the themes on “Tavastia”, the editorial that he styled for Dapper Dan mag. Meaning “a popular rock music club in Helsinki, Finland”, the images are descriptive enough to understand the narrative without a title.

Rock, and especially punk are considered to be a counter reaction from the mid 70′s mainstream political climate, and so the styling is heavily influenced by this. To the classic bullet points of punk fashion (slim silhouettes, band tees, acid wash finishing), Tuomas has added the new silhouette brought by Balenciaga and it fits just fine next to the others.

What I think makes this editorial successful is the casting and hair/make-up choices. It is a believable shoot because the team, with Tuomas as fashion editor, Jasmin Islomovic as casting and location director, Hair by Miika Kemppainen and Make-up by Jenny Jansson, got direct inspiration from punk figures such as Sid Vicious and duplicated it on the models that could have lived during those times. Moreover, hair is one of the most important elements.
