slenderman arg

Does… does anyone want to tell this person that I only approve comments that don’t break immersion…? And that… these “kids” are playing along with a series that creates an immersive experience by pretending its events are real…?

And that… if you look up “Stan Frederick” on YouTube the first things that come up are behind-the-scenes immersion-shattering videos that anyone can find and see, so everyone knows that they’re fake?

And that… comparing this to the Slenderman Wisconsin stabbing is super fucking disrespectful to the victim and an entire community of people, because these situations are unrelated in multiple ways?

And that… posting comments (and they tweeted too) insisting that I’m manipulating young people by basically turning them into the Wisconsin girls with some clearly fake content is some insane misunderstanding of mental illness and impressionable actions in the first place?

(None of these comments were approved, because they’re not good. I’m showing them here just to start this conversation because, the fact that the Slenderverse has existed for around eight years now (and ARGs have been around MUCH longer) and people still think there’s some kind of manipulative causality between immersive fiction and enclosed events is hella fuckin’ annoying.)

Evan Santiago, creator of Stan Frederick, made a video essay about the Slenderverse and the artistic landscape it produces.

Are you bored with traditional "slenderverse" horror?

Tired of seeing kids in masks running around with binary videos?
Sick of seeing the same skinny man standing still all the time?

Well shit boi, I got a series just for you!

Sit your ass right up and grab a drink because we gonna talk about a little series called SOURSALT.

You ever been bored with your best friend and thought, “man i sure wish we could be pretending to hunt ghosts.” or perhaps “wowee, i sure wish i was covered in shit and yelling into a camera right now!”

Well that’s exactly what we did!

“Soursalt” is a mystery. We don’t know what it is and we don’t ask. It just exists and that’s ok! It starts out with a few creepy videos introducing us to some cocksniffer named Madman Re but then the videos start to talk about dreams and whether or not uploader is dreaming.
Then before you know it some idiot is rambling about ghosts and idiot #2 is pissing into a lake.
This series is definitely worth the view. I honestly can not stress it enough. I can see it getting big, like big big. Large slenderseries sized big.
The best part; it’s not a slenderseries.
It’s *original* :O

Part 1 section 1:

i guarantee you will not be disappointed please reblog and share with your friends to spread the amazingness thank u ❤️

ok ,, this is prolly dumb but mh isn't… real right??? it's all just made up to seem real if that makes sense??

yea!! that’s what ARGs are - augmented reality games

they’re specifically meant to make it seem real, that’s why the character jay (played by creator troy wagner) had a twitter, and there’s multiple channels (totheark (where Spooky heavily coded videos are responses to jays entries, owned by one or multiple of the characters) and Marble Hornets (where the entries r uploaded)

there’s a few that go even deeper, like everymanHYBRID, they had multiple tumblrs, youtube channels, twitters, all held by different characters. they even had an event where you could sign up through email to participate, they left coordinates where viewers could find things, etc etc heck emh’s plot to start out with was that they were trying to make an ARG and then shit went south for Real (but not actually ;0)

it’s meant to be very interactive, the creators Want the viewers to see it as real, that’s their main goal (+ it makes it. very spooky because it seems so real, filmed on handheld cameras n stuff)

it’s Very good i actually. really adore ARGs

I watched all of the shrek movies recently. Memes are fucking immature so this is going to be kind of an uninfluenced review. I dont feel like the tim and eric or what have you style comedy where you pretend to like shrek a whole lot got into me when we were doing this as its a little dated. I decided to take the films at face value. What are they worth?

Shrek 1 - Shrek was written and created by some people who work on movies over at Dream works. Its still pretty good. The graphical quality holds up. Shrek doesnt appear in the movie but eddie murphy does make up well for the eerie silence brought about by the vanishment of each other cast member. Its so good that Will smith remembered every line of it in that other movie.

(Five tiny scream guys out of five)

Shrek 2 - This one is still good but the DVD went to autoplay when I was microwaving popcorn and my gf made me make it go back to the root menu and the popcorn caught fire and we nearly died. The premise shows wear but the wit is still alive. The last great shrek story as simon cowell viciously tore Shrek to pieces with his fangs at the end. PS: The dvd (issued 2005) of this i have said on the back it was the “highest rated animation of all time”. Which isnt true because it gets one less tiny scream guy than the first one.

Shrek 3 - They made a whole movie but forgot to put any jokes in it. Eric idle is in it becuase john cleeses character died. Do u think they passed in the dreamworks corridor and looked awkwardly at one another? If the best your movie has to offer is referencing monty python and the holy grail then you have to do better because in the first place that movie isnt actually that funny. I loved it when i was 10 but the only jokes i can remember now are the knights of the round table song and the killer rabbit. Its better than this though.

Shrek 4 - what the hell. ok id seen the first three before in the past but this one was totally new. Reality gets erased and Shrek is unborn. A world of warcraft race struggle plays out on the screen. For some reason the graphics are worse. The acting is also worse. Everything is worse and yet i also kind of loved the mayhem of the writers deciding to create an alternate timeline where shreks insidious legacy is erased and where a cool battle happens instead. I dont know who in the office they got to voice the little man but it was scary.

Puss in boots - No this isnt a joke. This is a real movie that was in theaters. No one watched it until I did so this is actually the first review! A bunch of good animators were forced to waste their time making a movie based off a script generated by a neural network. This whole thing is a mess. In the first thirty minutes the only joke is puss in boots says “leche” instead of milk. The next hour will reveal that in every moment of puss in boots’ life he is being watched in the corner by an egg person, like a bad slenderman arg. The dartboard they use to pick fairy tale characters to be the villain must have broke halfway thru because who the hell is “kitty soft paws”? This movie genuinely may be an industry test to see if the audience will be satisfied with anything they put on the screen and I kind of love how callous it is. Its about a cat fighting an egg.

Heyhey your art is I N C R E D I B L E and so aesthetic but i was wondering: what's an ARG? And slenderverse, what's that?

Thank you!! and whoooo buckle up buckaroo because we are about to get into some Nerd Shit:

arg stands for Alternate Reality Game and it’s basically just a narrative that’s told like it’s happening in real life. so they’re usually told in real time and the “players” or w/e can actually directly interact with some characters n events. they can be told thru Literally Anything: blogs, vlogs, twitter feeds, forums, music, u name it. i know a couple of people have even made like, extremely local ones through physical flyers and posters but obv I have not played any of those.

anyway basically there’s a plot and players have to get through the story using the media they’re provided (like i said, usually in real time with the story) and by breaking codes n shit to find out vital plot points. idk I feel like i’ve tried describing args to so many people and never actually made sense any of those times.

slenderverse is a special breed of arg with slenderman (look. i know. i know.) as the primary antagonist. marble hornets is the big one most people know because of the movie or whatever but there’s Literally Dozens of them out there. a lot of them have legitimately incredibly good storylines and Very good horror concepts tho. i’ve always been a huge fan of found-footage esque horror stuff and a lot of slenderverse stuff falls either in or close to that category so it’s a good time.

i hope i explained this in a way that makes sense…it’s late and i’m very tired but i’m also very PASSIONATE so. please get into args with me they’re very fun!!
