sled races

The Iditarod National Historic Trail in Alaska encompasses a 1,500-mile system of winter trails that first connected ancient Alaska Native villages, opened up Alaska for the gold rush and now plays a vital role for travel and recreation. Maintained by the Bureau of Land Management, the trail is now mostly closely identified with the famous annual sled dog race. The race, which started this weekend, challenges the racer and the 21 dog team with harsh conditions across rugged, but beautiful terrain. Limerance

Kallias and Viviane’s story, because these two stole my heart and I can’t resist writing them! This is going to be a prequel to the events of ACOWAR so be prepared for the journey of a precious friendship formed and lasting bond that will tie them together for eternity!

Chapter 1: Serendipity

The Winter Court was vibrant today. The small city in the open snowy landscape was busy with trade. Residents of the city walked the streets with their pale bodies almost blending into the snow falling from the sky. Voices intermingled with the busy market noises as furs were swapped for precious metals to be forged into weapons or jewelry.

Overlooking the city a boy sat looking outside one of the tall glass windows of the castle. His white hair hung loose around his pointed ears as his blue eyes watched for anything that could seemingly pull him from his boredom.

Today had already been filled with lessons on court etiquette at his father and mother’s request. Of course their requests were considered orders to those that served them. For they were the High Lord and Wife that ruled the Winter Court.

And Kallias was their sole heir.

“Sir Kallias,” a female fae stepped forward and gave a slight bow of respect to the eight year old who didn’t spare her a glance.

“What is it?” Kallias asked still looking outside.

“The High Lord and his wife have dismissed your lessons for the day,” the fae responded. “They have guests today that will require your tutor’s attention.”

Kallias nodded. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence and Kallias was an apt enough learner that he already memorized the text that would have been discussed today.  Perhaps now he could walk outside to his heart’s content after having been cooped up inside this past week.

“You’re free to go,” Kallias dismissed the fae who promptly returned to whatever task she had been doing before she was sent as messenger.

With as much calmness Kallias could muster he walked down the long hall and obtained his dark grey fur cloak with blue stitching. He snuck outside the servant’s tunnel that led to the gardens.

Though these gardens were nothing like the Spring Court’s.  Here the snow covered grey stone pathways that wove between evergreen hedges and the occasional burst of red from winterberry trees.

He breathed a sigh of relief. His breath pluming in a little fog from his lips as he walked around one of the large pine trees in the garden.

Suddenly his ears picked up a noise. A tinkling noise similar to bells that were usually placed out for festivals. It was a beautiful sound and Kallias slowly followed it.
His hands went to the small dagger at his hip. He was trained in combat, but he knew from his instructors that it was better to avoid a confrontation with physical blows. Even his magical abilities were a bit rough, but that was better than nothing.

He rounded the corned and froze at what he glimpsed between the brambles of a bush.

A young girl that was not quite his age was spinning in the snow. Her long white hair twirling and catching snowflakes that made her hair glitter in the sunlight.

And then her laugh.

Kallias stared in awe. Listening with wonder at this magical fae before him. He almost thought her to be a nymph from the stories his nursemaid used to tell him as a toddler.

Deep in his chest something tugged at him. Go to her.

He took one silent step forward. Then another. Hoping not to startle the girl. But for all his training he still stepped on a branch that snapped loudly under his foot.

Immediately the girl stopped. Her dark blue dress swirled around her knees until the folds rested against her brown boots.

The garden was quiet. So silent that Kallias could hear the girl’s breath as she settled from her exuberant spinning.

“You’re…” Kallias sought for something to say. Even his intensive reading offered him no help as he stood blinking at the girl before him. He swallowed down his nerves and realized that this was the first fae child he had ever met around his age.

Children were a rarity. Among the Winter Court that was even truer from the harsh weather that offered no forgiveness to those that succumbed to it. Even Kallias’s older brother had fallen to Winter’s deathly kiss not long after Kallias was born.

Still this girl…she was so… “You’re little,” Kallias whispered without another thought.

The girl blinked in shock and bounded over to him. Her feet giving a slight skip as she stopped in front of him. Her face mere inches from his face that Kallias was too shocked to even back away from her forwardness.

Who was she that she dared to share the same breath as he? The High Lord’s son and heir?

“I’m taller than you!” The little girl said happily with a smile. “See!”

At the Kallias realized what her intentions were for her nearness. And even more disturbing was that she was indeed a few inches taller. Much to Kallias’s sudden disappointment.

He brushed away her hand that hovered above their hands to show evidence of just how much taller she was.

“So?” Kallias said. “I bet I’m older than you.” For some reason Kallias felt the need to prove something to this girl who gave him a full grin.

“I’m six,” the girl responded.

“And I’m eight,” Kallias crossed his arms proudly as if he won the Winter Solstice sled racing tournament.

“Wow you are old!” The girl laughed and for a moment Kallias wondered if she meant it to be and insult, but her smile said otherwise. As if she was teasing him.

But then she grabbed his pale hands with her gloved ones and gave him a pleading look. “Will you play with me? All the others inside say they can’t or are too old, but you’re not right?”

“I – ugh,” Kallias had rarely ever stammered in his life. He couldn’t even remember the last time it happened, but looking at his hands wrapped in her fingers thoughts flew away from him. “You shouldn’t hold my hand.”

“Why?” The girl asked. Then her eyes narrowed. “Don’t tell me you’re like those other boys that are afraid of girls right.”

“Why would I be afraid of girls?” Kallias asked. How could I be afraid of you? As if it was possible to be frightened of the female that stood before him with bright eyes shining in the evening sun.

Instead of voicing his thoughts he added a different reasoning instead. “Besides it’s not proper for us to whole hands.”

“So you won’t play with me?” The girl visibly deflated in her happiness. Her blue eyes dulling with each passing second.

Awkwardly Kallias shuffled his feet. “Well it’s just that…I’ve never played with anyone before.”

“Really?” The girl cocked her head to the side. “Isn’t that lonely?”

Kallias opened his mouth to say that he is always busy with lessons so how could he be lonely, but then it hit him. He was lonely. Walking the halls with no one to play games with or steal cookies from the kitchen after they had been baked.

“I am alone…” Kallias admitted dazedly at his realization and looked down at his feet. Unsure of what to do with the wave of sadness rising in the pit of his stomach. He wasn’t supposed to feel this way. One day he would be High Lord and these emotions would need to be locked away since they showed weakness.

But then the fingers holding his own tightened and he glanced up to see the girl giving him a small smile. He could feel the warmth of it. How it eased his worries in a single second.

“Then I’ll be your first friend,” she said with a tinge of excitement and hope. “I’m Viviane. What’s your name?”

“Kallias,” he answered and squeezed her hand back. It wasn’t like the handshakes he was taught to do by his elders, but this felt special. Far more important than any handshake he would ever have to do in the future.

“Come on then!” She tugged him into the open space. “Let’s play tag!”

She took off running and he readily gave chase after a moment’s pause to consider the options. But he found not better choice than to run among the hedges with this free-spirited girl.

Viviane.

Soon Kallias began to laugh with her. Filling the garden with a wonderful noise as two souls began a journey that would be filled with happiness and loss. As children they were naïve to the world’s horrors. It would be many years before their peace was shattered into broken shards that would rattle their friendship to the core.

Night Sledding

“I wanna go sledding,” Dean said, sounding hopeful.

Cas opened his eyes and saw Dean peering back at him, dead serious. “Sledding… right now?” he said slowly. “You do know it’s the middle of the night?”

Dean has a lot of spur-of-the-moment ideas, and though Cas is reluctant at first, he can’t bring himself to mind this one. (1.6k)

Castiel was woken up late at night by a series of soft kisses: one to his forehead, one to his eyelids, then to his nose and finally, mouth. “Dean?” he mumbled, feeling around blindly until his fingers touched the face above him. He held his boyfriend’s head in his hands and felt his cheeks move when the other boy smiled.

“Hey, Cas,” Dean whispered, pecking him on the lips again.

“Why’re you up?” Cas murmured, eyes still closed.

“Couldn’t sleep,” Dean responded, running a hand through Cas’ dark, messy hair. “I feel like doing something.”

“What do you want to do?” Cas answered with a yawn, humoring him.

“I wanna go sledding,” Dean said, sounding hopeful.

Cas opened his eyes and saw Dean peering back at him, dead serious. “Sledding… right now?” he said slowly. “You do know it’s the middle of the night?”

Random question! Do you prefer Alaskan Huskies or Siberian Huskies for distance racing? Also, do you prefer distance or sprint races? I'm more of a Siberian person, but lately have been falling in love with my breeder's Alaskans haha

Thanks so much for your question! I hope your training is going well and that you are enjoying the sled dog handler experience!

I have Siberians and adore the breed and plan to stick with it. With the exception of Holly, they are all from working lines (mainly Jedeye and Anadyr), which means they are a bit different in build and appearance and from the Siberians typically seen in the show ring or in the movies. The personality and drive of working Siberians appeals so much for me and they really are adorable, stubborn clowns.

I do love Alaskan huskies as well and have enjoyed working with them in the past as well. They are certainly amazing dogs with great personalities and they run smoothly and beautifully in harness. Even though I’m a Siberian musher, I can see why the Alaskans are the most popular breed in the sport.

I definitely prefer distance racing over sprint, so that is what I focus on training for. I’m not a speed freak when it comes to running a dog team - I enjoy hours of solitude with just my dogs on the trail, exploring new country and trails and just the experience of traveling by dog team.

In fact, I might go so far as to say that I actually prefer wilderness trips by dog team over racing at all. I love racing and will continue to race my team, but taking trips into the Boundary Waters wilderness area in late Winter or early Spring with only a vague idea of where we’re going to go is what I live for.

Things I imagine married Hiccstrid to do...

- Cook together (Hiccup teaches Astrid a few tips)
- Have personal dragon races with each other
- Go swimming at the cove in their underwear or naked
- Braid each other’s hair
- Take baths together
- Wash each other in the bath (usually just hair and back, but sometimes more if they’re in the mood)
- Play in the snow together (dragon sledding races?)
- Astrid wears Hiccup’s tunic around the house
- Hiccup sometimes walks around shirtless in the house if it’s hot (and Astrid definitely doesn’t mind)
- Stay up late talking in bed until one of them finally falls asleep
- Have piggyback races with their kids (whoever can carry the kid to a certain point first wins)
- Hiccup teaches Astrid to draw
- Astrid teaches Hiccup to throw an axe
- Astrid helps Hiccup in the forge
- Plan chiefing stuff together (Chief and General?)
- Give each other piggyback rides (yes, Astrid can lift Hiccup)
- Massage each other (especially when they get older and are extra sore)
- Go on spontaneous adventures (provided someone can watch the kids)
- Cuddle…a lot
- Hiccup kisses all Astrid’s scars (and later, the stretch marks on her tummy from having kids)
- Ride each other’s dragons
- Make love in creative places (like the dragon stables)
- Astrid takes care of Hiccup’s wounds (she won’t let him touch hers, she’s too stubborn)
- Watch sunsets/sunrises
- Go to tribe meetings together
- Surprise each other with things
- And basically just be dorks together

Like. I’m not a huge fan of dog racing (either greyhound racing or sled dog racing)… or even horse racing… just because whenever there’s a competition it causes some not so great people to be more focused on winning than on treating their animals well and some do try to cut corners by drugging their animals and the like.

But I don’t think they’re inherently bad or abusive.

Photo above: Athabascan beadworker Lilly Pitka of Fort Yukon, Alaska made these dog blankets in 1926. Dogs would be decorated with fancy blankets like this during special times of year, when families would come in from traplines in wilderness areas of the state to gather together in celebration.

ALL ABOUT THE DOGS – Dog sledding, or dog mushing, has a long tradition in Alaska. It was used by early residents as a means of transportation. Today, rural residents still rely on dog teams to hunt and travel in remote areas, as do hobbyists who enjoy exploring the backcountry with their highly-trained athletes.

Alaska also hosts a variety of big-name races. Thousands of fans follow along as mushers spend days competing in long distance wilderness events like the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest. There are also sprint mushing races that are run through the streets of the state’s largest cities.

In the earliest days of tourism in Alaska, visitors found depictions of men and their dogs to be extremely compelling. They sought to bring home reminders of these people and their trusted companions of the trail. Many of these items were created by Alaska Native artists as souvenirs.

Luke Saganna carved this hunter and dog team (below) sometime around 1984 in Barrow. It is carved from caribou antler and has sinew tow lines and harnesses.

The museum’s history & ethnology collection features thousands of items that depict the Native cultures of Alaska. Many of them feature dog-related carvings or depictions. Jotham Seppilu is a Yupik artist from Savoonga, St. Lawrence Island. He carved this piece from walrus ivory.

This year in Alaska, the famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race had to move its restart location from Willow, near Anchorage, to Fairbanks in the Interior due to a lack of snowfall. That’s more than 500 miles away from the ceremonial start location in the state’s largest city. And it means an extra day for mushers to scramble to get ready for the race. Fairbanks officials expect hundreds, if not thousands, of race-related visitors for the event.

Some of them might be in search of something to commemorate the experience, such as souvenirs or artwork like this piece of mineralized walrus ivory carved by Greg Stradiotto in 1984.

Even though this has been a relatively mild winter temperature-wise, many mushers and visitors will be sporting head gear like this marten fur “trapper-style” hat used extensively in Alaska. The flaps can be worn down or up, depending on the weather.

This depiction of a dog team and driver was commercially produced and marketed to tourists.

Ninjago holiday episodes:

Ninjagan New Year: episode comes out to honor Chinese New Year, and the weird blend of Japanese and Chinese culture that Ninjago is based on. It’s probably actually pretty respectful.

Father’s Day: a set of mini-episodes. I still don’t know what’s up with Maya and Ray, but I’m sure someone who’s up to date in the series can deal with that.

Jay tries to take his dad on a “guys’ night out,” but then the trailer’s plumbing breaks and they gotta fix it, and on the way into town the bus they’re riding breaks down and Ed gets his nice outfit all covered in oil helping repair it, and when they finally get to their stop Ed lingers on the bus to talk to a robot because he didn’t know they were everywhere in the city by now! And you said you’re a barista? And they miss their stop, and when they get there the restaurant is closed. When Jay finally blows up because he’s frustrated and today was supposed to be perfect, and he can’t make anything go right - Ed stops him right there and explains that this is the most fun he’s ever had. He really just wanted a good night with his son, and they’ve spent it doing all the things he loves!

Cole spends days trying to put together something his dad will like. There’s a song and dance number, just as a concession to him, there’s a card, and he’s gonna make a nice, family dinner, just the two of them. Except then he spots a bank robbery on the way over to his dad’s house, and of COURSE none of the others are answering their phones, so he’ll just have to take this. And he does- but then when he gets home the card in his pocket is ruined, and his dad’s been waiting, and Cole explains himself but Lou’s like son it’s okay, I know you’re a ninja first, and Cole has some schmoopy “no, I’m your son first” and they hug and eat Cole’s terrible chili that they pretend to like for, like, two bites, before Cole suggests maybe ordering takeout instead.

We start out with Lloyd talking with Misako in the morning, a one-sided conversation, before Zane picks him up and they spend the day together. Little memorial services, each of them saying a couple kind words about the other’s dad, going out to get ice cream. There’s a conversation about how Wu was a father figure to Zane but never really to Lloyd but that was okay, because Lloyd got four older brothers and a sister instead, and that’s all he could ask for.

Wu has a very small moment at the end, visiting what remains of the old monastery. Misako is there, probably, not in a Wusako sense but just to quietly put a hand on his shoulder.

Mother’s Day: Jay doesn’t know what to get his mom, because he’s done every DIY gift in the book. Clay potpourri bowl? Check. Decoupage jar vase? Check. Small Rube Goldberg machine to make her breakfast in bed? Did that twice, failed miserably, she loved it anyway.

Jay is super embarrassed by his mom’s insistence on inviting everyone over for dinner and showing off all the embarrassingly bad gifts he’s made her, ugh she’s just so overbearing, moms, amirite-?

Cole, Kai and Lloyd put him in his place real fast and the moral of the story is that Jay learns to appreciate his mom!

Zane Saves Winter (aka The Not-Christmas Special): An ancient, magical volcano has emerged in the middle of New Ninjago City overnight, somehow, bringing with it an army of Magmen Warriors and probably Samukai again! Turns out there’s something Wu hasn’t told you, again. Can the ninja defeat the weird volcano and banish it to some other volcano realm?

Probably! But Zane gets distracted by a little girl whose snowman is melting and helps her rebuild it- and then by a couple who was trying to have the perfect winter wedding, and remakes their ice sculpture five times as large- and no matter how many times one of the others annoyedly shouts “come on, Zane!” he just keeps being sidetracked!

But it turns out Sensei is ashamed of everyone else and proudest of Zane, who saw the chance not to save Ninjago’s day but to save its citizens’ days, and the other ninja area little upset because Sensei we just defeated an entire volcano did you SEE that but also they were being flashy and show-offy and were shown sending volcano-bits flying into snow forts and piloting their vehicles through sled-races so technically Wu’s not wrong.

Then everything was melty and awful but Zane makes it snow the end.

Hanukkah: I know we’re not getting religious winter holiday episodes and I’m not even Jewish I just want this episode so badly because…. Juliens.

This one’s a flashback to pre-Rebooted, the Juliens have invited everyone over for a meal and everything is great. Dr. Julien’s got presents for all the kids even though they’re like 17 or something now. Maybe there’s a brief goofy Treehorn attack to give us some Ninjago-style miniepisode conflict. That is all.
